As a South African kid at the time, I wished I was old enough to go fight Communism in Rhodesia. That's how we saw the Bush War up North. Calling ZANU fighters guerrillas is not an insult. It speaks to their manner of fighting their war for freedom. Yes, they were freedom fighters, but only insofar as they have the freedom to enforce their views on the general populace. Terror was a weapon used in the killing of farmers, civilian road users, and bombs in supermarkets, so yes, they were Terrorists as well. Did the government of Rhodesia use legal means only to subdue the guerrillas? No. Poison placed on clothes the guerrillas would be able to steal from shops in the bush is one example. Using enemy clothing to ambush them is technically a violation of the Geneva Convention, and the penalty is to be treated as a spy and shot, but this rule applies to conventional armies fighting one another. Enforcing the rule is difficult when your opponent does not have a set uniform but wears whatever they can find. On operation Eland, the Selous Scouts painted their vehicles to resemble the government soldiers of Mozambique, Frelimo. They were also dressed in Frelimo camouflage uniforms. Under the Geneva Convention, these acts are illegal, and if caught, the Rhodesians could face a firing squad after being found guilty of spying. To my mind, if you are willing to face the consequences of being caught in the uniform of an unfriendly country with whom you are not officially at war with, then you should by all means go ahead and do so. 80 odd soldiers taking on some 5000 troops without suffering a single casualty is a remarkable feat of arms in anyones army. ZANLA bleated out that it was a refugee camp, and the West agreed and penalized Rhodesia further, but a later raid provided a classified report made by ZANLA that proved the camp was a military base, not a refugee camp. The West did not respond to that. Hindsight tells us that both Rhodesia and ZANLA were wrong to enforce their methods of government on the majority of Rhodesians, but at least Smiths government was willing to compromise and include black Africans in the government, leading up to majority rule. It was too little, too late, though. Thatchers government sacrificed Rhodesia at a time when they should have supported Rhodesia. There were multiple infractions by ZANLA breaking an agreement to NOT influence the elections by force, but the last British Governor of Southern Rhodesia, Lord Soames, turned a blind eye.
