My first car was a Mk4 Astra 5dr hatch, of the same vintage as James' van and a very similar spec. I saw it at FotU and poked my head inside. I don't know if it's the plastics that Vauxhall/Opel used but it smelt exactly the same as my car. So many memories came flooding back. The stories and memories a car hold mean so much more than horsepower or desirability.
I am a working man who uses an 06 Astra van 1.7.d turbo everyday and touch wood is brilliant reliable transport, very economical and surprisingly fast ,it has no electric windows or any touch screen infotainment to go wrong . I added a blue tooth dab and that’s all I need ,it’s a tool for work and I’m very lucky mine is rust free and good as gold , why don’t they make a thrill free pick up or van that is just a work horse
This is so wholesome! I watched recently also Jays video and it’s a similar case with my mom’s car. It’s a 97 Clio (in a fading red) and my grandpa used to drive it till 2019. He died because of cancer with a bit over 70. It’s more than just a car to us but recently it started to rust. Cars are simply just more than only metal and rubber - like a famous person once said Channels like yours, his and some other YT people are so inspiring/motivating to me for that reason. Not just entertainment. I might make a video about the car. Let me know if someone would be interested in that. Have a great weekend Julian
all red vauxhalls of that era used to fade as they didnt laquer solid paint. it just needs a good machine polish and regular waxing to keep it shiny 🙂we had several 1986 mk2 astra 1.3 petrol vans when i worked for stockport council in the 90's, they were ultra reliable and very nippy!
Yup, a friend had an Astra 1.4 hatchback poverty model as a company car, also a T-reg like this van and in the same solid red. It looked like this van does now by the time it was 6 months old, so this Astravan is doing well to look like this at a quarter of a century old. That GM red paint was just horrible and then they cheaped out by not lacquering it when pretty much every other manufacturer had worked out that, especially with the switch to water-based paint, it was a good idea to lacquer solid bright red paint to avoid the embarrassing sight of faded pink recent model cars queuing up at dealers to get the paint rectified. But Vauxhall actually seemed to be almost quite proud of their Vauxhall Racing Pink as it rather became known in the trade. Interestingly, if you got panels repainted by a body shop in the same colour but using paint from a different manufacturer it didn't fade anything like as badly. Mind you, it's still better than the white Vauxhall were using at the time, which could, and often did, just peel and fall off in great sheets not just in the UK but worldwide 🤷🤦♂️
Having seen this van in person (and fitted the radio for James in it) Incan reiterate how much of a survivor it really is, such great condition inside for the age and mileage and it has that “Vauxhall smell” as we were calling it. Fingers crossed I’ll catch you next time you’re down this way and our calendars will align :)
Yes! The smell! It must be the fabric or the foam or something... I hope so, this time it was quite a long day of filming but I have a couple of Macs Id like to bring you for recapping as well!
A friend of mine had an Astra mk4 estate in the same colour red and faded exactly the same, we spent a day cutting and polishing it only for it to fade again rapidly. The paint used by Vauxhall at the time was pants and didn't like sunlight. A/C was a big selling point for the Astra van at the time as it was the only van that came with it on others it wasn't even an option at the time.
I’ve always liked this generation of Astra. My grandad bought the car version back in 1998/99 and I was amazed how well it drove, quite a lot sharper than my new Golf mk4… at the time my work had a newish Escort van which I drove now and again. The Ford still had a leaf sprung beam axle at the back and a sluggish non turbo diesel, not a patch on the Astra!
I have a real soft spot for this generation Astra, in any body style. I have no idea why, I'm not a Vauxhall fan, and I've never driven one myself. I don't know why I really want one! I have only managed to drive an Astravan of the next generation, which was nice, but the older shape is special.
Great car the MK4 Astra! Solid, modern, reliable, well tought! One of the best Astras ever built! Matt, you should have one in the fleet? Too few Vauxhall content in general, should be an interesting addition
I had every version of the Astravan. They were my company vans. Started work in 1983 and I had a new one every 3 years. The last version was the best. I had the Sportive version as my last van. Ironically when Vauxhall announced they were discontinuing it, the company ran into difficulty and I was made redundant after 30 years service.
They were “Remote door mirrors” before these we had to wind the window down and keep pushing the glass about until the “ohh that’ll do” sprung to mind… 😳
I had the Mk2 Astra van and a few years later the estate. One thing I liked was the little cover in the bellhousing for changing the clutch. The car would have been a good choice for driving schools.
They are a great van . I bought my 03 plate 1.7dti in 2010 with 43k on it ,and still have it today . Now done 156k and still running on the original clutch. I originally used it as a business vehicle and when I changed careers I decided to keep it because it was just such a good reliable , economical and fun van to drive . I've changed things cosmetically but the engine is still standard . There are a couple of vids on my channel of it if anyone is interested. Video number 55 And one Short video no.26 📷
I don't remember the Astra G fondly. My Dad got made redundant in 2003. We moved from Manchester to the Lake District countryside for his new job. Not cool for a innercity 12 year old! Back went my Dad's company Moonstone Green 75. A week later, CU02 CBF arrived. An auction special silver Astra G LX Estate 1.7 DTI. Hated it from day one. It was so rattly and cheaply made. We had it for years! Very good workhorse though! 200k of fault free work and family motoring. I would love it back now. I remember feeling utterly miserable in the back of it, driving along the A65, listening to the Bridge Over Troubled Water Album 😂
Indeed, dual fuel LPG was quite a thing for commerical vehicles back in the 90s. Ford, Peugeot and Vauxhall were all at it and made quite a bit of sense. Always thought the stereos in those Astras sounded good too.
Congratulations on the 100K subs Matt. I remember the roads covered with these vans in the 2000's. The 'Posh' one was quite a looker usually seen in black. Back in the 90's and before many red cars 'blushed' in the sun after few years. The Golf, Focus and many more. I don't know what changed but they tend to keep the colour for much longer these days, even post office vans look better for longer. The mark III with a boot was called the Belmont if I recall correctly. Many thanks for sharing, I feel much older now.
Hi Matt had this vans wee brother the chevanne it was brilliant but had to get something for family then later on got s Greg nissan datsun sunny van derived car ran this for good few years thhis van was brilliant but boy racer (no insurance) scudded me rear end and that was the end of sunny van would have loved astra but just out my price range back then Matt keep them coming great channel regards from Scotland 🎥🏴🇬🇧
Contrary to popular belief, the DI badged cars all had turbochargers. Badge on this car says it's 82hp, not 101. Regardless of the power, this engine is excellent for heavy hauling or towing. Company had a Vectra 2.0 DI until 2017. Ditched it when it was so rusty that rainwater was dripping through a hole in the roof onto the passenger seat. 460k on the clock, engine was still going strong.
A better driving position than the Escort van that always felt like you were laying down, also good for a sneaky weekend by the coast as a makeshift camper van.
My Brother owned a 2000 Zafira with the non turbo 2.0 litre diesel and he loved it. It quite happily towed one of my Volvo V70s to the garage. I love this van. I just want to jump into it and put 400 miles on it in a day.
Lo Matt, so you got dumped oot the back of one of these a few times. Well that would explain a few things.🤣 The red paint fade thing wasn't just confined to Vaux./Opel. My eldest(52 now) learned to drive in the (ls) version of the Astra saloon. Ran it for a number of years then the rust got to it. Bullet proof mechanically. Thanks for vid Later 👍
The mk4 Astra is one of those vehicles, very common but seems to be rapidly disappeared from the roads. Shame as they're a great car and van, nice to see a van review too by the way although it really needs a polish!!!
Vauxhall's always had fantastic snazzy seats, a excellent review and what a story behind the van. I'm now away to check out the Scottish Vauxhall Whisperer Dougie and get another Vauxhall fix.
JayEmm might be interested to know that the Vauxhall trim level stick-on letters are still available from AutoVaux as, well, they do like to fall off periodically. They aren't expensive and they are the genuine items.
I had the mk4 hatchback….with one of the bigger (not biggest tho) petrol engines. Fastest car I’ve owned so far…. However……….. Only when it worked…usually needed a repair of some sort every month. Very unreliable. It also had a thirst for fuel…..watch the gauge drop over 8 miles. In the end I had to get rid. I couldn’t afford to keep it. By coincidence, a short while later, my new workplace upgraded to a mk5 Astra diesel 1.7 van…….. And guess what….that spent more time at the garage being fixed than being used…they got rid of it after 2y And I say this as a fan of earlier Vauxhall’s.
No the paint on the Astra hatch was the same mum bought a 54 mk 4 and the paint was exactly the same except the bonnet which never oxidised. Only 42000miles on it and hardly driven in the last 5 years but maintained. Unfortunately I got it when she died but had to sell it early this year but at least it is a friends daily driver.
The Astra G was and is the best car of its class and aera! And espescially as an older car the Astra G is the better car. The Focus Mk1 and also the Golf Mk4 were eaten by rust and engine/gearbox problems. The Astra G had only slight rust issues.

Many preferred the MK3 as it was a closer relation to the Cavalier whereas the Mk4 had a lot of Vectra styling which was derided at the time.

Vauxhall must've bought the same red paint as Ford used to. 😁👍
I love an Astra Van!
"....In the van, messing around with him......". !!!!😮!!!!
My early driving life was mk1 2 & 3 astral vans. They were always great to drive and were better equipped than the escorts van.

I think aircon was still an option on the LS Matt. My Dad had an LS Astra van and it didn’t have it.
Cool video! Please test drive a first gen Smart Forfour ❤
You deserve the 100,000 mate. I'm looking forward to the Alfa videos. I am thinking about buying one.

How Ironic ...currently eyeing up a Mk 4 Astra Estate ,is on a V reg and is the LS Spec

These things are so robust it's sad that the scrappage scheme got to most of them they just disappeared
My favourite car the astra g
An estate is more practical I think. Usual Vauxhall red to pink fade out .
The legendary Isuzu 1.7 d was the best engine, the vauxhall unit you had there had a few problems and wasn't the engine of choice, just saying.
Am I the only one who has absolutely no idea who James Martin is? 😄
Hes a very popular car RUclipsr
The fastest vehicle on the road…😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Pink Astra for 100K Subs? Oh, that Astra...
the train was for 100k , but no one watched that, so a pink Astra...
New name for you
Van diesel 😂
Red paint always seems to fade badly.
Red is the worst colour for fading over time if not regularly polished, it likes sunshine as much as a pale skin redhead does. When that arch is repaired it should be left visible as part of the history, conservation not restoration always for a cherished vehicle. I got done for speeding in 1969 in a Mini van, 50mph on a derestricted A road, the Devil's Punch Bowl above Hindhead, any commercial vehicle was subject to a 40mph limit unless on a Motorway, then it rose to 50 even if taxed as private. £15 fine and a 3 month endorsement, three current endorsements and bye bye license for a year, insurance companies didn't like them and one got hammered at next renewal. As soon as they expired one applied for a replacement license so they didn't show.

does make you think, what the hell happened to vauxhall ?
you dont see many Vauxhals on the road these days
Vauxhall sold over 100,000 vehicles in the UK last year and was the third-best-selling marque.
So there are plenty of them around to be seen!
Corsas are the 2nd best selling model in the UK
Now owned by the French
