T4's are great, love my 96 petrol one (although its in at the minute having the 2.5tdi fitted). You could get the short nose until the end of production ( the long nose isn't as common) and the 2.5tdi as a 5 cylinder.
Recently bought a 24 yo LWB single cab panelvan for 3k Euro. The engine and transmission are in mint condition, it has relatively low mileage and all the important bits are rust free! Currently we're using it to haul cement and lumber for our backyard project but for 2025 we're doing a campervan conversion and are planning on going to Romania. Already got a bed, the flooring material and some of the furniture for it so now we're waiting for the acoustic mats, thermal insulation and the important electronics.
I bought a 22 year old LWB T4 van in Finland back in 2019 to help me move back to the UK, trekked across Europe in it wth my life packed in the back. Amazing beast, it was. I'd question your contention about being easy to maintain, though. Generally, yes, but trust me - you you don't want the clutch to go!
One doesn't have to use LPG for the cooker, Diesel cookers are available and will also provide hot air heating, if connected to a separate tank can be run on agricultural diesel, red or green depending whether UK or Éire.
My 95 T4 is a daily driver and it's a 1.9td. perfectly useable easy to keep going as long as you don't mind constantly tinkering 😬. Loved the old school analogue nature of the T4.
Love my T4. 2001 California with nearly 400000km. It’s a 2.5TDI 150hp, so the engine is a bit more complex, but it’ll cruise all day on the motorway at 80mph. It’s a genuine "Swiss army knife" and the ultimate road trip machine.
It was sold as the EuroVan in North America. Most units were sold through VW dealers as a Winnebago Industries conversion, the EuroVan Camper. Winnebago also used them as a chassis cab conversion, the Rialta. There's still quite a bit of interest in them, particularly with baby boomers who were around for the earlier versions. Their biggest problem was it was difficult to compete against the Ford EconoLine van, which was incredibly popular in fleet sales (e.g. every single ambulance) and was more capable as a full-size van.
Watching with a cup of coffee, good morming 😅 Been camping a lot in France and two times with a T2 Westphalia and T3 DIY respectively 👍 This T4 has a nice bed/matrass it seems, for me where quality camping starts (been in tents a lot, so I got some experience points).
The later 2.5 tdi was a 5cyl tdi The early 2.4idi 5cyl was very smooth. The tdi was noisier but quicker and more economical. 2.5tdi none intercooled 88bhp had reverse across and foward 2.5tdi intercooled 102bhp or the later ex AA vans were 114bhp the intercooled model the way to identify was reverse was across and back.
I remember "Road and Track's" Truck, Minivan and SUV Buyers Guide in 1993 describing this van as "long on room, short on vroom" in terms of what they considered an underpowered engine. But i always liked the looks of this model.
My friend's had a T4 1.9TD as a daily driver for years and apart for getting rustier every year, it's been a very reliable workhorse. I think people who say that are confusing them with T5's. 😂
please drop me an email, id love to compare them all in videos - I used to freelance for Volksworld, and Camper and Bus, so have seem a lot but not had the opportunity to feature many here
Dunno if the T5 is better than the T4. There is that famous picture of the Transporter generactions, T1, T2, T3 and then the T5 on a trailer attached to a T4 😁
@@AlejjSi I had a T5 Multivan for 18 months, at least 6 of which were spent either broken on the side of the road or in the repair shop. Never again, when I’d finally had enough I traded it in and upgraded to my first T4 multivan. The difference in build quality was evident from the start. It was 3 years older than the T5 but everything worked and nothing was broken or tired inside. In the 2 years I had it it never failed me. I sold it practically for what I’d originally paid for it and bought a T4 California. So yeah, the "evolution of van" joke was true enough for me that’s for sure 👍
Small correction. The 1.9 Diesels and 2.0 Petrol were the only 4-pots in the T4. The 2.4 Diesel, 2.5 Diesel/Petrol are all 5-pots. Then there was the (sadly) auto only VR6.
@@davesimpson2805 You could get a manual VR6 in Europe. The automatics are definitely not to be recommended. Endless problems unfortunately. Probably the only unreliable T4’s.
I’ve owned 1.9td on a R plate for five years ,it’s been converted to a camper ish from a panel van the clock in the dash I thought that was standard as it’s a clock in mine ? And the dash looks untouched,They are loveable money pits 😢don’t ask me how I know?
Also 5 cylinder petrol, Volvo engine on the early t4 ……. Sadly the t4 has less inside space than the t25 which isnt internationally renound as a plumbers van
The VW LT vans are front engined, rear drive & predate the T4, those are more truck like though, they had a separate chassis until at least 1996, not sure if the second series(1996-2006) still had a separate chassis, they are related to some MAN, Pegaso, even Peterbilt vehicles.
Law states that whenever someone uses ”Type 4” and ”T4” in the sameish sentence, i’ll have to point out that these aren’t the same thing. ”Type 4” is their last aircooled passenger car, the 411 and 412 as they were called. Type 1 is the Beetle and Type 2 the van. This is the T4 generation of the Type 2.
800 Special was the first UK vehicle to have drive by wire. If you touched brake pedal, throttle shut off. Not the fastest accelerating thing in the world. Snails overtake you.

There`s only 2 types of VW van a mint one or rusty nail. But, both are still cool and wonderful though, and they always make me smile.
An excellent review Matt as always, was good to catch up with you at the NEC on Friday and Saturday.
Great to see you too, glad you had a good time at the show
Once a van always a van and that dashboard very busy in a good way and a proper tea shelf actual wood

I had a very early T5 with that engine and over 230k miles. My daily driver. What a thing, I loved it 🥰 I wonder if it is still alive
That aftermarket CarPlay tablet stuck on the dash, looks just like the factory unit in many late model vehicles. 😂

I love '90s magazine strap lines
The T4’s party trick is the infinite intermittent wiper setting. Oh, and different sized wing mirrors on each side.
My family had a blue and White one called Charlie 😊
Love our T4, slow 1.9td but is a camper. have had T2 & T25 (T3) , i think the 4 is easier to live with.
I do miss my T4…..made a great day van/ overnighter
Yeah, old hippy, is definitely just a state of mind, nothing to do with age 😉👍
The reflection of the blue bits in the windshield, would annoy me no end.
Nice van
Another great video has always matt and family 👍
Thank you
These things are all over Cornwall and dread getting stuck behind one.
As we say in Poland, there is no career without a T4 (it rhymes in Polish)
I've had 4 T4s. Fantastic vans. Don't believe people who say they break down a lot. If you actually use them they don't 💪🏻
Or if you sell them before they do break down by the sounds of it 😅

Oh now you've done it. You will have to do a Transit now or a Sprinter, Hiace, Trafic, Relay, Ducato.....

1993 on a m reg ?
