- Was I Scammed Out Of £250 By Buying This Proton? #proton #protonsaga #car #barnfind #scammed
Around a year ago I bought a collection of 6 Proton's locally. 2 of them were tucked away on a farm, across a bridge, over a stream and a cow field and in a barn ... Mrs JC, recovering from the shock of the other 4 turning up last April, thought id forgot I needed to collect the other 2. Thankfully the team at JW Recovery in Boston reminded me that they were still there ... and so we went and got them. I paid £250 for this car ... was I scammed ... maybe

Having the washer fluid next to the header tank os GENIUS. Helps melt frozen water when people don't use quality screen wash.
Never thought of it like that ☺️👍
After the old P-reg one with the swiss cheese bonnet a couple of weeks ago I was dreading the moment when the knocking stick of justice reached the wheel arches and was hoping for a better outcome 😢
I agree :( very sad.
Basically it is a Mitsubishi Mirage! Mrs JC NOT Impressed!! 🤣
It's a Lancer underneath. Either way you are right ... She wasn't 😂
@@JonCoupland Yup, the good old early- to mid-80s Mitsubishi Lancer and Colt were the Proton's parents, though in the UK we never saw a Lancer 5-door hatchback like the Proton Aeroback.
That's probably the reason why the Proton was so popular in the UK as that era of Mitsubishi were ultra-reliable cars. And Proton did improve on the Mitsubishi rust resistance too.
It was the Proton Persona Compact that was based on the Mitsubishi Mirage.
The y galvanized the body panels 👍 @@JamieCameron-Mackintosh-z7c
@@JonCoupland Yup, which is more than Mitsubishi did. Those Mitsis could go horribly rusty comically quickly.
if you scrap it Jon,remove the bulbs and fuses..they will come in handy.
I always do :) - they are good to have
Always pains me a bit when I see an old survivor go to the crusher when the mechanicals are as sweet as a nut.
Mechanicals are saved are reused 😊👍
“I can’t hear the ECU whirring”. That would be a good thing, generally ECUs don’t make any noises. Did you perhaps mean the fuel pump?
No ECUs on these have a high pitched frequency 😄👍
@ well, I’ve learned something today. I mean…why would they do that? Do hoardes of stray dogs come running everytime you fire a Saga up?
@@smithp573only the inspector 😂
Mrs JCs face 😂😂 I bet she was quick getting back to the curry lol.
It’s such a shame that it’s rotten as I think it could have made a nice car and unusual without the sunroof as well - some dodgy repairs there
At least many of the parts will keep others on the road and is it worth servicing the engine and gearbox as well
All the best to you all Daniel
Thanks for watching Daniel PLUS good curry 🤣
Always a gamble - but you are not investing silly amounts of money - as you said the stuff you can salvage you salvage and what’s left can got to the banger racing fraternity or for scrap. At the end of the day I believe it’s worth the punt - you win some and lose some!
Absolutely this ☺️ and helps produce some content
Bet the neighbours loved that 😂😂
😂 they are used to it
@ 😂
did the rust get into the microphone........ only kidding good video , was there ever a leather in erior edition? that would be rare
I reckon I've damaged the cone in it with an angel grinder 😂 nope - no leather
Mrs Coupland’s reaction was priceless 😂
Standard reaction 😂
Its just a little rust Jon.... 😆. On the plus side, there must be some good bits on there to help keeping the others going though
Absolutely. Managed to grab myself some much needed parts
Is there a record of how many Proton Saga/MPI's left?
There's 6 at my house currently 🤣
@@JonCoupland There's probably less than 50 left.
I would repair that as the holes do not seem that big, so patching would be OK. I would not touch anything like that if I didn't do welding though. I have so little faith in the cars made today it seems a shame to scrap ones that can be saved.
Sadly time and money is an issue here. I've saved so many over the years and found them new homes. This one was genuinely no good
The holes are big 😂
If you or Dad had welding skills would you take this on as a labour of love, or would it be beyond that in your opinion ?, looking at it id say new outer sills, rear arch fabrication and inner rear arch plating. If this was a rare or more desirable car would it be worth the effort to save it ?, enjoying the content 👏🏻
If someone had the time or inclination it absolutely was not beyond repair but the issue is the cost, time and overall value. The car if running with MOT is probably worth £1200 ... It would cost us a lot more than that to get it right and the sad reality is .. we have perfect ones in the collection. It's a shame but it's gone to keep others on the road 😃
@JonCoupland yeah that's the point I was trying to make, yes it could be done but sadly it wouldn't be financially viable, sad but I guess you can't save everything
@@chrisjackson3750 Absolutely - thanks for watching :)
Yep, it's a bit crispy, Jon. I think you need to stop bringing them home. You're like a cat with a mouse 😄... great fun, tho 👌
The sad reality is, if I didn't bring it home it would have been carted off and squished without me having the opportunity to save some rare parts (and make some content) 😄
@JonCoupland I see, Jon that's your excuse 😄...... Did you enjoy your Korma anyway 😊
Twas lovely and then we went on holiday the next day
Hi Jon hope your well. Not meaning to correct you but the one I bought from your had just over 160k miles on the clock so mine trumps this one lol, this one could be saved with a few long nights in the garage and the sparkly stick, let me no if you have any others you want to part with 😜
Oh that's brilliant ... as you can imagine - they all seem to roll into one! - this one is now a cube
It's a shame it isn't worth saving, very rare car in this country. There's only 9 GL's left according to how many left and I'm not sure if there are any 1.5s left at all?
The interior looks pretty mint, but I suppose it's not worth keeping the seats. Can't be all that many people requesting spares for a 1993 Proton lol
I have a 1.5 GL 👍😁
@@JonCoupland In that case howmanyleft.co.uk lied to me 😭
It's not accurate at all
@@JonCoupland Ah fair enough
Caveat emptor ! - Did you not know that Jon ?
When you said "we need the pointy stick", I thought you were talking about a magic wand - That would have been right !
Love your passion though, but unfortunately you can't win them all. 😞
No magic wand this time sadly. It will live on keeping others alive
An MOT check has revealed how rotten this car was in 2017, and it has sat in the open for 7 years since.......
Yep 👍
There are plenty of spare bits that will cover some loss
Absolutely 😁
Hay that car is 30 years old, you wouldn't have found a 30 year old car in the 1970s in that condition. Look on the bright side.
True ... But also look at the other Protons in my collection that are near perfect and are 35 years old 😃👍
And why has it got Black pillars one side?
It should have 😄👍
How many Iswaras does that make for you, John? Think you and Pete could do A Complete nuts and bolts rebuild of one of these Mitsubishi engines soon?? Bulletproof or not..why not try to squeeze 250 000 kms more out of it? Seem to remember the Lancers fitted with this easily drove half A million kms and more..Very smart in these Times Of The EV..SAVE THE ENGINE😊
The engine has gone on to keep another alive 😄👍
Lift the back seat, you never know, you may find some coinage or even a stray mint Humbug! 😆
I love finding 20p 😂
@@JonCouplandDouble its resale value! 😂
A shame. However, I'm assuming that with it's 151,000 miles this car has has a very good innings.
Absolutely. It was very well loved until it was parked up
Enjoyed this video Jon.
Assume this died so other protons could live?
Thanks for watching - sadly so
How much to save it ?
Nothing sadly. Ive stripped it to bare metal and it's a cube. I filmed this in August
You live you learn, we all make mistakes in life just need to limit them.
It was part of a whole collection so on the grand scheme of things it's not too bad
It such are pity when a Proton starts and runs very well but the rust is really bad
I agree. We would absolutely prefer it the other way around 😅
That's a real shame you are going to scrap this, i am sure with a lot of work it could of be saved. Yes it will cost more than what the car is worth but surely to keep the Proton running, would be worth it? Call Mike Brewer! Let's see it on Wheeler Dealers? Honestly the engine sounds good!
You've hit the nail in the head. A lot of work. Sadly not economical but ... I can't save them all. This one has gone on to keep the other 6 In my collection alive
Yes, you could say the ones that go to Jon are going to a bad home. Better to go to someone with the tools and time to do the welding.
@Phiyedough a lot of them have already had a certificate of destruction issued for them sadly ... So the only thing I'm allowed to do is strip them for parts and make them famous - best I do that and save what I can than them just get crushed 😞
Not seen rust on a Ford or Vauxhall like that for some years now Jon, I hope you enjoyed your curry 😊
It was lovely and then the next day we jetted off to Florida so a win all round. Thanks for watching 😊😃
Where have you been 😂
That's a nice car
Sadly not as nice as I'd hoped 😕
@JonCoupland such a pity, im trying to work my way through my rover 45, not even sure if I'm going to keep it, on the face of it yours didn't look too bad
Ah, 1980s-era UK car air conditioning.
A good tip to get a good idea what the likely overall condition of a used car in the UK is is to do a bit of homework and see where it was originally registered, there are plenty of websites that can tell you where the vehicle was registered from the identification letters in the registration. A good simple guide is that South Coast vehicles often tend to be better structurally, Greater London vehicles tend to be structurally decent but are often quite knocked about bodily. Welsh vehicles I would generally expect to be parts vehicles only, Midland cars are a crap shoot, some can be good but others can be rotten and generally anything registered north of the Midlands is likely to be rotten. Scotland, well, see above. Sadly East Anglian vehicles tend to be ropey due to the amount of snow it gets in the average winter and so the amount of road grit that goes down. My sister's old 1.5GL SE, originally registered in Surrey, was like new underneath despite being over 20 years old and 240,000 miles up when her loser ex-husband wrote it off by supergluing the locks. Her insurance company wouldn't let her buy the salvage so it became Chinese baked bean tins. The replacement Persona Compact SE that I found for her was registered less than a mile from where I'm sitting right now on the central South Coast was also rock solid underneath, if a bit surface rusty, and went to a friend of hers when it was replaced by a Mobility car. It continues to pass MoTs to this day but is probably on borrowed time due to ULEZ.
Sad to hear about the impending ULEZ doom
Keep it as a parts donor? Youll easily recoup your costs.
That's the plan!
@@JonCoupland Do you get the present Proton range in the UK?
See it at skeggy next season 😂
It went round in October 😂
Do you think you’ll get your two hundred and fifty quid back in parts?
Fingers crossed 🤞
Spray paint silver over the rust then it will look new
Great idea 👍😂
Shame as it looked quite good but plenty of parts to save others..
A massive shame I agree but yes it's keeping others alive
Can always break it for spares
That was its fate sadly
You got loads of space ✨️
@@chucky2316Yes, mainly where the rear wheel arch should be! 😂
oh dear
Indeed
If the engine is good, the under side not too bad... why not pach up the holes??? It is not too bad, no reason to pull the plug on it....
Time and economical cost sadly. The car hasn't gone to waste though (which I would have done if I hadn't brought it home) it's gone on to keep others alive 😄👍
That will be big money
Yeah sadly @@chucky2316
The proton killer strikes again
😄👍
You might get a £100 profit by weighing it in.
😁👍
That's a parts car let's get moving on make one good car out of the lot them.
Out of 6 from the collection 3 are still on the road 😃
Cant win em all!
Sadly so
you should race it yourself for a change.
Watch this space ;)
I think you need Dad to supervise you
Can't win eh 🤣 people say I should do my own stuff without Dad. Then I get myself in a mess 😅
@JonCoupland it's what parents are for, helping the Offspring when they get in a Mess.
21'00"...
"This car is Scrap!"
Surely the "S" should be silent?
Same thing right?
I think it could be mot failure .
I agree 😂
Sorry but I think your doing the wrong thing, your dad got all the skills to do that car and less Cost, shame , I bet Ben from Tasty classics would buy that for sure👍
Skills and cost isn't an issue. Time is. The car genuinely was too far gone and sadly there was no scope of getting it back on the road. There were further issues not shown in this video including a damaged chassis. It was genuinely only destined on the end for the scrap - I'd never scrap a useable or decent car if we don't have to 👍
Ben is a fake he doesn't even own the cars
Ben not fake,, REALLY M8
Yeah, because it's horrible
Certainly was quite crusty
