This did work for me. After I got the "some of these characters can't appear in the key" error I clicked troubleshoot again and then "I recently changed hardware", and the server connection issue was fixed.
It asked for Product key in this guy kept putting in the Product ID. They are not the same. Product ID will be shown in registry but the product key will be there where you bought the windows off
