I realize this video was posted nearly 7 years ago, but I have the same sander that has gone unused for a few years. This simple bench mount is exactly what I needed. It turned out great !! Thanks for publishing it.

I made the platform to hold the sander a few months ago, it worked well for the job I was doing; I always put the sander in my wood vise before that. Last week, I finally finished the other half so now I can lay it over and use it horizontally. I just wanted to thank you for the great plan and video. Now that I have the completed platform, I can actually use my wood vise for what it was intended. Thanks John!

The adjuster screw to get a perfect 90 on the vertical sander is brilliant... so simple and elegant. Thanks!

I thought I'd seen all of your videos but somehow I missed this one. This is exactly what I've been looking for. Thank-you so much for posting this video. I'm heading over to your blog, from the link in the description for the construction article. Cheers, b.

I use it every day. The belt sander is never taken out.
    Good luck with yours.

This thing is perfect! I like to build things, but I live in an apartment, so any small portable jig that I can tuck away and pull out when I need it is absolutely brilliant. Yes, my neighbors hate me. :P

Hi. Love this idea. Really like the simplicity of removal from the holder.
Soon as I'm back from Thailand and home I will be making one of these as I have a belt sander in the back of the locker which is hardly used. Great thinking and thank you for sharing your ideas.

Thanks John. I'm waiting for delivery of a "new" Draper 1010wt ( 70th birthday present from the missus) ! Down to counting the hours for its arrival !!! I've watched a few vids and this one is the best I've found. Birthday Sunday 22nd. SO I gotta a couple of days to make this one , starting in the morning. I'm even going to paint it "Draper Blue" :) Thanks again for time and tips. Have a good weekend (subbed)

Perfect. I just got an old (really heavy duty) Sears Craftman belt sander at a yard sale for $5. It's very heavy and unweildy to use so this will be a perfect solution. Thanks!

Great work. I just made a simple rectangular frame with 2x4s and set the sander in it upside down and twist tied the switch on. Works perfectly and doesn't shift at all. Mine's an old Craftsman sander with no dust bag.

@OllyPJ Thanks. Adding a switch to the platform is something I wouldn't do - it would just complicate the build and make the unit more bulky. It's just a sander, after all, and the risk is minimal if you follow safety precautions: don't wear long sleeves, jewelry or anything else that can get snagged in the belt. Keep fingers away from the belt and the end especially (chance of pulling them in).
A foot switch that the sander could plug into would be nice - maybe I'll build one.

@TheLongkeeler Good point - maybe a hook and eye type catch to hold it. I rarely use it at 90 and when I do, I hold it down with my left hand and sand with my right. Not good for bigger stuff though.

  • @OllyParryJones

A smart solution to the problem. My one suggestion would be to fit an NVR (no volt release) switch somewhere so that you can leave the sander in the 'on' position and operate it without having to reach in to that awkward space each time. If something went wrong, you'd want to be able to switch the tool off instantly.

My Maktar belt sander ( Made by Makita ) came with an attatchment that clamps to the sander via the front handle. You unscrew the handle then mount the attachment then turn the sander upside down and you can use it .

VERY late to the party here. Probably a dumb question but here goes. Whe put into the vertical position, does the weight of the sander hold it in place or have you run into issues of it lifting up if you pusned too hard with a qork piece. I haven't begun a build yet but was trying to figure out how or if I needed a way to lock it at 90. Thanks john. Really like your vids.

Thank you, as usual you have good ideas and great designs. I am in the market to get a belt sander and one of my considerations is the sander have the ability to be mounted upside down. Obviously this model does it well but, I am looking for a cheaper machine as I m not a heavy user. Can anyone suggest me such a sander. Thanks in advance.

Hi John - Thanks for this and all your other vids. I'm a real fan. I plan to remake my belt sander platform soon, and I'm wondering what the advantage is of the flip design vs. a fixed (no flip) design in the configuration yours after the flip. Seems to me that is you have that (a platform perpendicular to the belt), the first configuration has little additional or added value. Any comments? Thanks.
