What about the ticking? Were the lifters worn through?

I love these late SL's. Catch that little dance the headlights did on startup? But yeah This M156 is famous for a defective head bolt issue that leaks coolant and somebody may have attempted to replace it albeit incorrectly.

I agree, the facelifted R230s are really clean and the AMGs look quite aggressive too and the adaptive headlights are really neat to see in action. We have suspicions that this headbolt job was done by a dealer but we caught a couple of inconsistencies aside from the loose cam cap. Stay tuned for more updates on the SL63!

That's ridiculous. That owner needs to take the car back to whoever did the headbolts. I'm guessing retightening the camshaft caps didn't make any difference? Nothing to lose by trying is there? It's hard to see, but the actual lobes look in fairly good order.
EDIT: just saw your followup video - yeah that has torn the head cam journals up completely. I wonder how it's running 6 months later?

The next video I uploaded after this one was an update video on the SL63, but the car has long been fixed and as far as I know was running great and was sold shortly after we fixed it. We ended up finding a cylinder head for it and that ultimately was the fix along with new lifters and repolished camshaft journals. I recommend watching the short update I made on it, you can see the damage that was done to the cylinder head in that video but I was never able to update it passed that. Hope that helps brother!

My c63 literally started doing this last Friday.. scheduled to take it in Wednesday to MB Dealership. Started car and the clicking got louder as it warmed. Proceeded to go to the shop and it completely shut off on me.
Car is currently getting compression/borescope test to see if there was any internal damage, hopefully not.. 😓
But thank you for this video.. first one I’ve found with this similar sound

So the headbutt caused the tinking ? I have the same issue but the person I bought it from said they were changed

    • @Bozs4life

It wasn’t really the head bolts that caused the ticking, it seems someone recently replaced the head bolts/gasket and neglected to properly fasten the cam cap bolts which caused the ticking noise and the camshafts and cylinder head to be damaged.
Now in your case, I would ask the previous owner for proof of the work done to the vehicle and if they can’t provide it just remove the valve covers and check the head bolts (if it was updated the bolts should be an external torx style bolt). In my experience, failing head bolts/gaskets don’t cause ticking, just drivability problems and coolant loss. Ticking coming from the valvetrain, again in my experience, is often a result in worn/failing lifters or failing cam adjusters. It’s most likely the lifters if I was to guess as these were a common weak point in the M156 engines. Hope this helps!
