      ...which I think tracks pretty well with how real friendships develop over time. At first, people present a more..."curated" version of themselves (I, for example, like to bamboozle people into thinking I'm the type of person who uses words like "curated"), but over time the more unguarded we become. It's no more true of Britta than it is of Troy.

    Britta is definitely my favorite character. Having good intentions and always wanting to do the right thing, but falling short because of personal hesitancy and shortcomings and outside pressure, is something I personally relate too. I appreciate how for the most part she takes being "the worst" in stride, unlike other characters who are the butt of the joke like Ross, Boyle or Sheldon who react poorly. And of course, "Together, my cats can do anything!" is when I bought into the character once and for all; it's a shame we never saw Britta's cats.
    Edit: I finally finished the show and…I’ll be honest, I don’t understand all the hate Britta gets in the later seasons. Yes she’s a bit ditzy, erratic, impulsive, and needlessly political (sometimes more than a bit 🤣)… but she was ALWAYS like that, especially starting in the second half of S1 when she stopped being primarily focused on improving Jeff and keeping him at arm’s length and started opening up and being herself. I’d even argue that S2 Britta was the worst in this regard of being the caricature everyone hates. Even in S5 and 6 there are plenty of moments when the old Britta, the smart, common-sense, altruistic idealist, comes through. I stand by what I said earlier.

    I think Britta's character was written with deeper thought and intention then the rest. She still remains a mystery and that is what I love about her. The only area I really disliked was the Jeff, Britta, and Annie triangle (too Archie comics for me). Britta is why I watched community. The dialogue that Percy and Jeff had regarding Britta's cock-up at the dance actually made me emotional. Britta for the win!

  • @misterairborne654

    I think her conversation and subsequent existential crisis with her old anarchist friends in "Bondage and Beta-Male Sexuality" encapsulates her character perfectly, while also giving her the very hard hitting self awareness that she needed to power through a lot of her emotional issues. It was a really beautiful set of scenes.

    As a fan of community i really think your analysis of Britta is accurate, her change was for the best as Dan Harmon said she was more of a tool in the first season. Then her flaws and most of all her willingness to good while recognizing her hypocrisy is just amazing to see

    ok this is kinda random but kinda not but i was rewatching the abeds bday one where britta gets ridiculed by her boss in front of her friends (sorry not great w ep names lol and idr if you said the name of it) and it made me SO mad bc he was like "oh, ill get all your tips?? ALL OF THEM??? MIGHT AS WELL STRETCH IT TO 2 YEARS SINCE YOU BARELY GET ANY" and yada yada but shirley seemed a little empathetic towards her only for annie to b like "ik...everybody hates britta!" like BITCH SPEAK FOR YOURSELF I LOVE BRITTA!! idk sometimes their hate to britta is so unnecessary and bandwagon-y but shes such a good person it is AGGRAVATING

    I honestly was extremely frustrated with how britta's character was treated in-universe. Community tends to be a relatively self-aware show, and with the amount of depth they gave to britta, and the sort of politics they imbued her with, I was hoping that she'd have more moments to shine or be outwardly appreciated by the characters around her. No other core character is shown a similar level of contempt in the show except for pierce, who's is entirely warranted.
    Britta's affinity for social justice could have been used so much more smartly in the show, and yet it's so often overshadowed by the 'joke' of her being bad at things that she ends up being 'bad' at social justice. Her 'badness' consumes so much of her personality, and it often feels like the other characters don't like her for the vast majority of each episode, except in the last few minutes when they realize that she's well-intentioned or entirely correct.
    My favourite Britta moments that I would've loved to see more of: Meowmeowbeenz (rare instance of her political critiques being great, and her 'dislikability' being critiqued as the rating system was exposed as being arbitrary), Michael Jackson Britta being concerned for Ryan Seacrest Jeff (an example of her being mildly overbearing and misunderstood, but not actively disliked, and also she's absolutely correct, caring, AND she gets to apply her pysch knowledge), when she pays for Abed's film class (excellent example of her being well-intentioned and correct, but still overstepping her bounds with her communication with Abe'ds father).
    Britta has so much knowledge from the previous life she lived -- hell, she volunteered for the peace corps! The episodes I mentioned above all had funny Britta moments that didn't solely rely on her being 'awful' -- and if it did, it critiqued other people viewing her that way instead of allowing that to be the 'correct idea' communicated to the watcher. I miss Britta being an intellectual equal with Jeff, both in conversation with him and outside of it. Having her command some respect/affection from the group in the same way that almost every other character in the core cast does (minus pierce) would have been nice.
    Theres just so many missed opportunities to use britta as something else other than 'idiot sjw'. Like the blanket fort v.s pillow fort trobed episode -- why not make Britta a proper journalist? There could've been so many fun jokes in there (her having the "PRESS" sign taped on her and then being a casualty, which would've escalated the battle to 'war crime' territory, her publishing news about the battle that citizens of the forts read about, her interviewing troy and abed as if they were leaders of nations, etc.). But no, her character was used as a cheap gag to make fun of bad photographers.
    My Ideal britta would've had less 'britta'd' moments, would've been more respected as a smart character (both being recognized by the show and the characters as 'smart'), and she would've been more outwardly joyful! Britta is absolutely someone who has the capacity to get excited and run wild with ideas and be silly (and do drugs lol). The first time I remember really seeing that was when she organized the school dance, and that was in season 5. Something like the trampoline b-plot that Jeff, Troy, and Pierce were into, but for Britta!
    Anyways. As u can see im a big Britta fan.

    I frickin love Britta and what they did with her! I felt so personally called out as they developed her character hahaha, I too am a weed-smoking, cat-owning, pseudo-activist psych major. Idealistic but kinda The Worst haha. It was amazing to see the flawed character that she became and to see my own weak spots pointed out to me so brutally lol

      @jenniferaguilera2087 2 года назад +2

      I simply wish she had been a little less the butt of the joke and a little more appreciated for her good heart. She never stopped being smart and she's often pretty spot on but it's unfortunately overshadowed by her saying or doing something ridiculous right before/after and she ends up being completely ignored both by the characters and the audience

      @ninjanibba4259 3 года назад +18

      Her intelligence never declined, her persona was clearly a wall built up, just like Jeff and Troy, once they became closer, those walls came down and they all expressed their true selves without losing their core personalities

    • @corgsopal
      @corgsopal 2 года назад +3

      @@ninjanibba4259 I agree. The walls slowly came down and she started to explore herself, push her own boundaries out. She was figuring herself out like all of them. She seemed to take Abed’s description of her in the second season Christmas episode to heart more than anyone else as well.
      Great essay, I hope to see more.

  • @felooosailing957
    @felooosailing957 2 года назад +1

    Hi! First of all, you really captured literally all of the best moments of Britta, which I really appreciated.
    Now, about your thoughts: I really think Britta Season 2 and 3 is the highlight of her character. She is weird and a ditz and a klutz, but she also is strong to overcome Jeff (she even is her friend with benefits), she chooses a major, and in general is setting her life straight. She continues the "Susan Sarandon"ness of Season 1 but with humour. Besides, she is not a bad klutz (like in the Roxanne song in Remedial Chaos Theory).
    And she is the only one who is not manipulable by Jeff, which makes her her only actual equal in the group and I would argue, her best friend (because Annie is really the actual love interest).
    Season 4 is a miss cause the Troy Britta relationship just happens. And Season 5 has that awesome Floor is Lava plot line, and also one of her best dialogues: ""We know that he hates money or loves it or doesn't care about money and hates butts or loves them."".
    I do think she becomes flanderized in Season 6, since her parents are a bad development. Britta running away from her home should have a reason for it to be compelling, and it just isn't presented like that. Her parents are cool people. (I know she says they weren't like that, but the audience is not seeing it). And moreover, they pay for her. Which makes her character's backstory as a whole a useless crybaby: she escaped home really for no reason, and she isn't supporting herself. Which is not Britta: Britta has gone around the world (unlike anyone in the group, until Troy), and now she is willing to settle down, but she is independent as can be.
    Now, the finale of the show does give her that great moment with which you open this video essay, which sums up Community's comedy, which is based on lack of self awareness, not only for Britta, but also for Pierce and Troy, the "dumb" ones of the group.
    She is a klutz, but a person who is figuring out, and who has already done all sorts of things, including in her love life, with experience but also cynicism (which makes the contrast to Annie's innocence and immaturity, and Shirley's traditional values and hipocrisy compelling).
    Even though the show is not nearly about her, she is the most realistic and empathizing character in the show

  • @WakandaSykes
    @WakandaSykes Год назад +1

    Good vid, but I feel season 5 was a redemption for Community story wise, especially Britta's character:
    1. Geothermal Escapism speaks for itself. :)
    2. Britta one ups Abed and humbles his trademark gatekeeping in Analysis of Cork-Based Networking (s5e06).
    3. Her vulnerability, loneliness, and trying to find herself is palpable in Bondage and Beta Male Sexuality (s5e07).
    4. App Development and Condiments (s5e08) is arguably as strong for Brita as Geothermal Escapism; her morality/worseness lets her process the circumstance in a healthier way than the rest of the study group.
    5. Season 5's finale puts the final nail in the Britta/Jeff romance coffin and further explores how her attraction to Jeff comes from convenience instead of passion.

    Britta is Harmon's conscience, and self-deprecating judgement thereof. A foil to Harmon's cynicism (Jeff) and Harmon's creative analysis (Abed). I think this trio is Harmon dissecting his own character, while the other core characters are there to interrogate them, whether it be his feelings towards manipulative sociopathy (Annie), sincere Christianity (Shirley), inherited wealth and old-school comedy (Pierce), or a naive character to drive exposition (Troy).
