@@makebelievestudio hi guys✌🏻 thank you for the amazing job when I saw this I became happy as a little kid who was waiting for santa👽 could you please make a profile for the mooer GE 300 light if it’s possible🖤?
OMG I'm blown away. my jaw literarily dropped. I'm not kidding. I think you have to be a guitar player and a fan of Tom's to truly appreciate what you guys accomplished here. It sounds on point. I'm honestly shocked. Congrats, kudos, and all of the accolades.
Ever since I was a kid, I always held those palm mutes in the highest regard. This tone recreation is spot on! Without a doubt, the best I've seen/heard on RUclips. I will say, I think a huge part of the guitar sound on this record, aside from the gear used, is the absolute razor-tight performances from Tom. On Enema, when you listen closely, you can hear a lot of dynamic and rhythmic variation in the performances, especially between the left and right channels. Enema sounds like a really well-engineered record made to tape (I'm fairly certain it was, correct me if I'm wrong). However, TOYPAJ to my ears has always sounded like a perfectly mechanical performance, and I mean that in the most positive, complimentary way. A performance so tight it just sounds like one huge guitar rather than two panned left and right. It's always been such a mesmerizing sound to me. I love it and I always wondered how they nailed those performances. Was the budget just so big they had the time to perfect every single detail? Or was it all just Pro Tools? I'll never know! Always wish there was more video footage of them recording this album. With all that said, I am very much looking forward to seeing you take on some of the tones from Self Titled!!
You are correct about the playing!! I wanted it to be a little raw just so people would know it was a different part for sure. Some people couldn't hear the double track because its just so tight originally. I think there was very little editing. If you watch the short clips of Tom in the studio he is playing those parts well. Also one of Jerry's only posts on gearspace was him saying that Travis wasn't edited and he played he parts.
@@makebelievestudio Tom's also stated in one of the untitled record's bts videos that recording is like kicking yourself in the balls repeatedly (enacted with the help of one of Travis's bass drum pedals). Jerry Finn did not settle for anything less than perfection.
You guys have the best guitar tone recreation videos on RUclips. The TOYPAJ palm mutes are a gold standard in pop punk. You guys nailed it. I’ll watch this video 10,000 times myself to get this profile!

Thank you so much for making this video! I’ve needed this for over two decades now. Tom’s palm mutes on this album are next level. I’ve had to reckon with the fact that aside from the gear, a big part of the sound is from his technique. Probably the thin pick, the string gauge, all downstrokes, on just one string. And he must angle the pick a bit funny to get that thwack sound. I honestly had no idea that others obsessed over these tones as much as I have. I’m glad to know that there’s a community of people out there as crazy as me.
@@makebelievestudio Eh, you’d be surprised. The intro riff to Dumpweed (before the drums kick in properly) is slightly rushed compared to the hi hat and they left that in!

Took me a while to realize you guys were the ones playing. That’s how spot on the tone was. “Take Off” is probably my favorite Blink album and definitely my favorite sound they made. Probably my favorite tone in all of guitar. I stopped chasing it a few years ago because I couldn’t even get close. But I really want that palm mute sound because it’s so good. I still remember when that album first came out. I begged my dad to take me to Best Buy after I got out of driver’s ed the day it released. I had to take driver’s ed that summer and that album was the only thing that made me not completely miserable about it.
Damn, that is pretty much spot on. I got a TOYPAJ tone with a 5150 amp sim, crunch channel with the gain and master volume cranked, and a 4x12 Mesa IR. Probably not this close, but still in the ball park. Great job, even the drums and bass sound similar!

It could have come from many sources, but a hypothesis of mine is that it was at least in part the use of an Empirical Labs Distressor. I’ve worked extensively with a stereo matched pair, and they really do live up to the hype. Amazing compressors, they’ve been the “secret sauce” on many an iconic recording. Thanks for this video!
I’ve been listening to Enema of the State and TOYPAJ the last few months, and like you say, the guitar tone and ESPECIALLY the palm mutes just rip your head off. I was able to recreate it pretty authentically with a Marshall IR in the Boss IR200 and a Timmy. I build my own cabinets these days (Nick’s Shred Shoppe on reverb) and I always use a V30 with a Creamback, it makes heavenly tone. There’s a lot of nuance and pleasant “chunk” to be had when driving a clean Marshall preamp hard, you retain a lot of the body and dimension if you avoid burying everything in too much gain.
