  • Oh man, this was fun and much more challenging than I imagined. It's only once you jump in and start recording that you realize how hard this song can be to play. It's a challenge to get the feel right on this track and always a struggle to lay back and not rush it... easier said than done! Anyways, it's an honor to be able to play on this track from one of the drumming greats and I learned a lot about Harvey's style from studying his performance so this was a great learning opportunity for me. Thanks to Vic Firth for putting this contest together and best of luck to everyone who enters!

    That snare sounds amazing, is it muted? has like a dry plop sound. Awesome by the way ;)

    whats the thought behind holding your left stick backwards? is it just for the sidestick work later in the song?

    • @abbdrums
      @abbdrums  9 лет назад +3

      That's a good question. For the hi-hat part in the beginning, it gives a much stronger "chick" sound on the hat to accent that backbeat. It also produces a much stronger rimshot sound for the backbeat in the sax solo section which I liked. For the ghost notes, it gives the stick a front weighted feel which can help your tactile feedback of feeling the ghost notes because you have to work a little bit harder to make them happen. And, also of course, it helps with not having to flip the stick at the end to get to the crosstick section :) It's not really necessary at all, it's just a very subtle "sound" and "feel" thing that I think works for this song...

    I'm sure there's not a "mailing list", but how does one become involved in the drumming community fullstop?
    I wouldn't know that NAMM and PASIC even existed if it wasn't for teh ut00bz, let alone competitions etc

    Hey. I'm new to your channel. Great Work by the way!
    Was wondering how to mic a drum set (well) for a friend.
    I'm a bass player, and now I've come across your channel I was wondering if you could learn some Marcus Miller songs or whatnot and wanted to do a collab! Just hit me up with a song and I'll see if I can pull it off. If you wanna see some covers, just check out my channel.
    Thanks man, keep it up!
