  • Dr Wattana Tanming is the curator of Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden. When asked what I would like to film in the garden, I left it up to him to choose the topic that is close to his heart, and also the mission of the garden. As houseplants are often times discussed in the channel already, we went with something a little different - a walk through the Queen’s path, a new feature in the botanical garden. This part of the garden houses primarily palms, ferns, and gymnosperms. We see some cool and rare palms, discuss legumes, learn about definitions of fern, and get an impromptu sex education on ferns that is super interesting! There were also advanced botanical knowledge shared with us in this episode that will blow your mind!

Hi Sean, this was a very interesting episode, funny too, 😅 and immensely informative to say the least. Here is a piece of information that I’d like to share with you regarding your question to Dr. Wattana about the edibility of ferns. You might be interested to check out Acrostichum aureum, also known as the swamp fern, or Akoor in my native language. It grows near the riverside or swamps, hence the name. I originally come from Goa where this fern is found in plenty. We make a very delicious curry from the tender shoots/fronds of these fern with either jackfruit seeds or local beans called “alsanne”, something like pinto beans.
Thank you for this episode. ❤

Whoaaa thats interesting, thanks for the share! Ferns would be such a wonderful food source as they require little resources to grow quickly

Amazing place, love the QR codes on the trees an plants. A monocot, will not grow back if the crown is cut, grass, birds of paradise, banana trees. A dicot if cut back will send out axillary buds. 💚

Specifically arecaceae, others like arums, dracaenas, zingibers can give rise to offshoots if the growing tip is cut off

How interesting, that fern that forms pups outside of itself! It basically creates a lower life form that can then create it. There you go, make babies 😆
