Have you ever tried improv quilting? Its such a different take on making a quilt! If you'd like to see more of my improv blocks, join me over on instagram: instagram.com/meganmme/
I made my middle granddaughter(5yo at the time) a quilt from Halloween colors (since her bday is in Oct and she LOVES Halloween 😂). It was in my first year of quilting & the first quilt I had done that wasn't a baby quilt. It's a crazy block that I think is called stack and whack? Where it's kinda what you are doing but in a stack and move the top to the bottom, etc. YOU know what I'm talking about. LOL I cut it horizontally and vertically. (I'm in my second year of quilting so I'm not familiar with ALL the names of techniques. There's probably one word that could've saved all this typing. 😂😂) It was slants and MILD curves. I didn't know then I was supposed to be afraid of them. I was so proud of that quilt!! I started quilting right as the pandemic started. I was gifted fabric online in those gifting groups. I had no idea the fabric was crap until I got it. It was practically see-through. The poor quilt didn't stand up to the many washings it took in a house of 5 kids with 2 toddlers younger than she. She was too scared to tell me at first what happened, but I encouraged her. I told her it wasn't her fault, but it was mine because I didn't know any better what kind of fabric to get and I would make her another. THIS time I will let her pick out, and I an SURE she will pick out something with cats! LOL My story of wonky improv(?) blocks in my first biggish quilt. LOL!!
This is genius! Which ever way "hits" YOU. Journey-ing might feel stagnate in the end. What about just numbering for now, and deciding later. Our journeys are often not a straight line but a smattering in life's big picture when we draw from past experience.😉
Great watching you make your beautiful blocks! Continue making blocks. This way you may have the option of placement where you find natural bleeds of color and you can disguise 2 or 3 blocks as one and have a flow. It will be beautiful regardless with your eye for color and construction.
Thanks, Christine! I'm definitely coming around to the idea! It would certainly be awesome to have the quilt practically assembled when I finished that last block! :)
I have only just found this tutorial but wanted to thank you for a great video. The blocks are gorgeous! Thank you as well for not assuming viewers know how to "square up" a block. I'm a beginner and that step by step walk through of how to do that was very helpful!
😄 I wanted to speak to you while watching the video, like "Put it over on the right at an angle!" 😁 So fun! My $.02 is to wait till the end to figure out how you want to lay things out, but you do you. Some day when I have enough scraps, I'm going to try this! I need to try a curve first!
Thank you so much! I think for now I’ll label them so I have the option of putting them in order. But I think I’ll keep collecting them for right now :)
You are so inspirational! I am coming back to sewing after a very long time. I am not inspired by conventional quilt patterns and you have made me excited about all the possibilities! Thank you.
Your mind works in such awesome ways! Those curved blocks will make a fabulous quilt. I love scrappy or improve blocks and have some very random ones which will mostly be potholders or mousse mat gifts.
Really enjoyed you hints. I'm in the camp to wait. That way the interesting small blocks could get an additional piece if necessary to make it work, or the bigger ones could be sliced down. Enjoyed what you've done do far.👍
If I was doing this project, I'd wait until all the blocks were finished, then I'd work on how the blocks go together. But that's me! I enjoyed this video as it is so imaginative. I sometimes find myself getting bogged down if I go too far outside the box, so this would be a good way for me to stretch.
I just love the fabric you choose. You ever sell lots or bulk scraps? Weird question probably. I'm just getting into sewing. I made my sister a pixel quilt couple years ago. I got what fabric I had left over and then just order lots of fabric to for my daughter and I to paper piece her a quilt. I'd say that has to be my biggest problem at moment is putting colors together. Thank you for sharing. I have learned a lot from your channel. Hugs
Really enjoyed this video! Many insights into improv quilting, particularly making some rules / guidelines to begin. I think sewing the blocks together now would limit your options later - so wait!
Keep making more blocks until you think you have enough for a whole quilt--but keep them in the order that you made them. When it comes time to put the quilt together, you can try it out in order and if you don't like the way it looks you can mix them up.
Those colors sure brighten a dark and rainy October day! I’m still a novice quilter but my scrap bin is growing, so this was a really helpful tutorial. Also, I think you should wait and put your blocks together at the end, what if you make something brilliant that should be a focal point and you don’t have a good place for it?
I say throw caution to the wind!! When you piece these blocks together will they still be all willy nilly in size? I hope so because i have orphan blocks that i refuse to cut and I’d love to see how you put them together this way! By the way I was secretly thrilled to see you on the live MSQC chat lol
Best improv advice ever-... 1. Set (a few) rules for yourself (coloring on the page but not caring if I'm in the lines of the picture drawn on it) 2. Use the scraps from 1 block to guide the next one.
Waiting 'til the end of block making would be the way I would do it. Planning the quilt layout as you go seems to me to take away from the "improv " technique, my opinion.

Great job. You eliminate much of the anxiety involved in this kind of piecing.
Thanks for the excellent instructions and wonderful ideas. And no music.
Love your style! Since your playing off the previous block to create the next, I say build as you go along. Thanks for all the inspiration🥳
Thanks, Christine! I'm definitely coming around to the idea! It would certainly be awesome to have the quilt practically assembled when I finished that last block! :)
I like the idea of sewing them together in sequence, it's like a journey ;-)
I just love you throwing in the purple, pink to pop. Gorgeous
You’re definitely a Kona girl. 💕 sounds exciting.
I love this idea. The scrappy improv has brought me so much joy and it feels so free!! ❤🎉

I love the Kona cotton solids! thanks for the tutorials!
I just love this idea! It’s so fluid and free, no rules just pure creativity. Please take us along for the rest! Make it a whole series!! 💕
Oh, boy! I've got to get up my nerve to try that! Can't wait to see the finished quilt!

I love. the idea of watching the sequence! I like to make an improv block or two after a project, with my scraps.
Thank you for this tutorial. Newbie to quilting and enjoying learning 🎉
I just watched your video, I am going to give it a try, I like it. ❤
Thank you Megan, Ihave learned a few tricks again. Love that free style 😉
Love watching. I'm very new to quilting, so it's all new to me. Thank u. Keep up the good work
I really love watching this. I liked the way you explained you thinking. Thank you
Wait to sew together when you have enough for a quilt...love your blocks💥
Wait until the end, it will be a beautiful surprise. I love improv so much! 💜💜💚💚🧡
Megan what a fun tutorial. Snow is my go to. I'm going to see if my local shop has the mushroom. Thank you for all your gifted ideas.
I love this. Want to see how you join them because that's where the challenge comes in for me.
Love what you have done!!! I say continue creating but wait and put your blooks together at the end. You are the best!!
Thank you so much! I think for now I’ll label them so I have the option of putting them in order. But I think I’ll keep collecting them for right now :)
I agree with the others, sew rhem in sequence. Pickle and mushroom, is a great combo.
Love it, so inspiring
Jumble 'em up!👍👍Or rather, keep your options open until you have a nice stack of (those gorgeous!) blocks to play with, and try them both ways.
You are so inspirational! I am coming back to sewing after a very long time. I am not inspired by conventional quilt patterns and you have made me excited about all the possibilities! Thank you.
I would wait until the end.
It would be fun to see them in order. I didn't think I'd like the pickle color, but I'm starting to like that.
I think you should sew them one after another! Love the way the block looked after the trimming!
Those blocks are beautiful, amazing what you can do with scraps! And you are doing an amazing job, so pretty!
Your mind works in such awesome ways! Those curved blocks will make a fabulous quilt. I love scrappy or improve blocks and have some very random ones which will mostly be potholders or mousse mat gifts.
Thank you for showing how to do the improv curves, was very curious after watching on instagram
I love this idea! It’s so free and creative. I would wait till all the blocks are done and then assemble.
Love it! This is the prettiest improv quilt I’ve seen. Great job and I would wait until they are done and see what speaks to you in the end.
Love this idea for improv quilt. I will try to make one myself. Thank you for this video, appreciate your tips.
Wait til all blocks are finish - then place, with ability to switch to what’s satisfying. ❤️
Great presentation. Love the single pop of color in a mix. I would wait until all are done. Thanks
Really enjoyed you hints. I'm in the camp to wait. That way the interesting small blocks could get an additional piece if necessary to make it work, or the bigger ones could be sliced down. Enjoyed what you've done do far.👍
This is lovely. You've demystified the improv curve for me, thank you!
I’m interested in how you use blocks of different sizes. It’s a bit like a crazy quilt, very intriguing!
I love the colors and think it would be really interesting to see you build the quilt as you go.
Love this. I've been thinking of adding some curves in my scrappy blocks. Ty for demonstrating how to make the curves
Really like how you think things thru. Great energy
Such an awesome process to make a quilt block! Thanks for posting this video and your talent!
LOVE this! It's good to "stretch" your creative muscles and go with the flow! Thanks so much for the demo.

So fun. Do you ever do this w patterned fabric?
Love this!! Improv sewing is so much fun. To watch and do. 😉💜
Mulher seu trabalho é show, parabéns Brasil Rio de janeiro 🇧🇷
I think waiting until the end would be the way I'd go with it.

Choose sequence of sewing the blocks after you piin them on a board. Stand back and squint. )))

Wait til the end. You’ll need to enlarge or trim your blocks. You’ll also have more choices for arrangement.
Wait til the end

My suggestion is to wait until the end to put all the blocks together :)
Wait til the end so you can make it aesthetically pleasing to you.
I make improv mug rugs when i need a palate cleanser.
That’s a great use of small improv pieces!
Continue with the same striped piece but ad a strip of aqua….the, next same with a strip of pink.
Lay them out at the end to please your eye.
Put them together at the end so we can see the process
Wait!

It is improv, why are you using a ruler except to square the block?
Mix them up
Mix them up.
Improv to me means that you don't plan ahead.
