This is an outstanding review. As an unhappy teen my friends I hung with explored west. But now that I’m older West’s writings will have a deeper, fuller resonance. Thanks. I subscribed!

Enjoyed your perceptive review very much ! THANK YOU, sir ! I once had that New Directions paperback that had both "The Day of the Locust" and "Miss Lonelyhearts" in it. Found it at a used bookstore. Lost it somewhere along the way. Bummer ! I highly recommend both those short novels by the late great Mr West. But in regards to his death in a car crash, it happened in Southern California near El Centro, not in Arizona. They were returning from a hunting trip in Mexico. Also killed was his wife, Ruth. They had only been married eight months. Very sad.... :-(

@@LeafbyLeaf You're welcome ! I am sure Nathaniel West had much more great writing in him ! And wouldn't it have been wonderful to see F Scott Fitzgerald finish "The Last Tycoon" & do more ? Always heartbreaking to see great creative talents pass away before their time. Thank you again for your insightful review ! Please keep you the good work !

This is one of my favourite short pieces of fiction, too, so I really enjoyed hearing your analysis. I hope you'll also do a video on The Day of the Locust. I've been meaning to pick up A Cool Million by him, as I read somewhere that it's supposed to be a thematic sequel to Miss Lonelyhearts. Have you read it?

The novella was ahead of its time with regard to the narrator's overt writing about sex and infidelity. And because of that and Miss Lonelyhearts having second thoughts about religion and humanity, I can appreciate this novella. However, I came away feeling quite depressed after reading it. I was put off by visualizing these strong female characters confined in a very misogynistic world. I didn't care for the bitter tone, especially coming from Shrike, and no one - not even Betty - came across as likeable. A real downer for me and so I can't recommend it.
