Time and again, drummers have been divided into two opposing camps: Here the 'powerhouses', beat-oriented and often polyrhythmic, the Tony Williamses and Elvin Joneses of the drive-crazy world; there the 'sound magicians', meticulous and often playful, the Billy Higginses and Tony Oxleys of the sound-tinker faction.
If you listen to Eric Harland's solos for stephan's basement, you will find the perfect synthesis of these two schools of playing. At first, it's inspiring to hear how confidently he makes the new equipment his own piece by piece. One moment you think you can hear the band that Harland is driving with his grooves, the next you follow his sound magic down to the filigree detail. And what’s more: you can't separate one from the other. His grooves are so contagious because every sound is precisely carved out, and the sounds seem so gripping because they are perfectly woven into a propulsive web. Eric Harland thus proves to be the prototype of modern drumming: he combines power, imagination, awareness of form and sound sensitivity. He drives us before him and yet lets us linger with his tonal subtleties. It combines the propulsive energy of innovation with the relaxed presence of historical consciousness. Rarely has so much vision and circumspection been heard in a drum solo.

Immer wieder hat man Schlagzeugerinnen und Schlagzeuger in zwei gegensätzliche Lager eingeteilt: Hier die ›Powerhouses‹, beat-orien­tiert und oft polyrhythmisch, die Tony Williams’ und Elvin Jones’ der drive-verrückten Welt, dort die ›Klangmagier‹, detailverliebt und oft verspielt, die Billy Higgins’ und Tony Oxleys aus der Soundtüftler­fraktion.
Wer sich Eric Harlands Solos für stephan’s basement anhört, findet die perfekte Synthese dieser beiden Spielschulen. Zunächst ist es be­geisternd zu hören, wie souverän er sich das neue Equipment by do­ing zu eigen macht. Bald meint man die Band zu hören, die Harland mit seinen Grooves vor sich hertreibt, bald folgt man seiner Klang­zauberei bis ins filigrane Detail. Und vor allem: Man kann eines nicht vom andern trennen. Seine Grooves sind so ansteckend, weil jeder Klang präzis herausgearbeitet ist, und die Klänge wirken so packend, weil sie perfekt in ein vorwärtstreibendes Geflecht eingewoben sind. Damit erweist sich Eric Harland als Prototyp des modern drumming: Er vereint Kraft, Imagination, Formbewusstsein und (Klang-)Sensibi­lität. Er treibt uns vor sich her und lässt uns mit seinen klanglichen Subtilitäten doch verweilen. Er verbindet die vorwärtsdrängende Energie der Innovation mit der entspannten Präsenz des historischen Bewusstseins. Noch selten war so viel Über- und Umsicht in einem Drumsolo zu hören.
