I've been thinking about Eric's pocket a lot lately. In latin percussion there's this thing called Masacote, which refers to the ghost notes between accents on the conga. In drumming, obviously, there's the same thing - that Clyde Stubblefield ghosted dialogue. I think where a lot of drummers who try to copy Eric err is they want to do the flourishes without getting the pocket - the masacote - together. But it doesn't work without that seductive, propulsive pocket. Just food for thought..
for me it was the opposite. this guy really inspired me to practice for hours every day. Listening to good drummers should be a motivation! Of course we won't probably never be as good as Eric but when you practice every day, in a few years you will be better than you ever imagined :D
I love this song, it reminds me of walking around Princeton, N.J. (Just the Rhodes sound does) The drumming is fantastic! Thank you for posting these videos, my playing would be lost without them.
I actually set aside my drums; stacked them up and put them in the corner to gather dust. I gave up drums because they were becoming too expensive to keep. I'm only 17 and get money here and there so keep that in mind. But then I saw your video, right here, this exact one. And it made me realize how powerful the drums are. Thank you, this video actually made me pick up the drums again. Thanks. Great, great drumming on here. :)
OMG ERIC YOUR A FREAKING BEAST MAN, you never seemd to amaze me with your independence. WOW I would love to study under your great knowledge and wisdom on the drums. You make me that much better and make me the drummer I am today. Love you Bruh
he has the most fluid drum set up, everything is placed to ring and reverberate etherial yet ephemeral. lovely warm shimmers that don't overtone too long.
All I can say is WOW! The minimal size of his kit proves more does not mean better. What a sound. Being an old crooked stick drummer, it's amazing to see the straight stick technique provide this kind of sound. Wow!
This is almost a divine revelation on drums to me, but why does he not listen to the wide open spaces of the tunes he plays along? This peace of drumming drives the water of luck into my eyes! Still.....and once more...thank you Eric !!!
Nice groove. I love all odd meters, especially 9's and 7's. 5's are simple and driving. 11's are funky. I'm mostly a darbuka player, but gradually branching out to a hand drum set kit, and a traditional traps. 7's are fun b/c you can shift where "1" is to change the mood so easily. 9's are fun b/c they naturally swing. Brubek swung "Take the A Train" into a 9 as part of Blue Rondo a la Turk, and it's really cool.
Thanks sharing... jazz drums.. rhythm.. majik.. gotta groovy sound and good technique. Nice effects and smooth, silky flow into jazz piece. Excellent..
ok ive been watching this video for at least 9 months now. It amazes me every time. 3:25 that nice tasty groove and stank face. then at 5:25 you can just tell he's saying listen to this goodness
That was amazing jazz drumming is so sweet its not easy and to be really good you must practice for hours but look at the payoff to play like that i can only hope one day
Play along? Not in a million years!! :o) I would have to live forever at least, to be able to learn to play the first minute... This is a wounderful played piece.
Luv it! Musical, expressive creativity in a format that encourages further exploration. This is really evolved playing. Very inspiring video. We need more of this type of playing on the musical scene today. Of course, I've always been a jazz fan anyway. Few drummers today have these capabilities or are even interested in finding their own distinctive sound. Guys like this are leading the way by rising above what's "popular" (i.e. mediocre) and taking the instrument to another level. Bravo!
Truly amazing... This video has inspired me to focus more on jazz drumming instead of extreme metal. Eric your hand technique is UNBELIEVABLE. Instructional video on hand technique in the future...? Shared with all my friends--keep it up brotha!
Metal guys watch. I love Tomas Haake, but this complexity and chops, while playing swinging, syncopated triplets in odd times, while adding Cuban stuff, is just freaky great. Eric is a young monster respected by jazz legends.
what a drummer...what a volcano of different brilliant ideas and inspirations.
Marvelous. That's not simple drumming, that's composing.
I think he might be the best SOUNDING drummer I've ever heard, but that's preferential.
It just can't get better than this.
The technique, the fills, the groove and the smoothness.
One of a kind and a living legend.
Being a rock drummer myself, I have to say Jazz drummers are simply amazing
it is so great to see an all out shred still being an integral part of a song, and a really good one at that.

It's hard to do this justice in a comment.
This is the kind of cerebral playing that every jazz drummer strives for.
Best drumming video on RUclips.
that hi hat could cut a diamond
One od the best drum impro ever. Hypnotic musicality. So good.
what a freedom of expression this man possesses...
I love this song, it reminds me of walking around Princeton, N.J. (Just the Rhodes sound does) The drumming is fantastic! Thank you for posting these videos, my playing would be lost without them.
some thing that i really dig about jazz is that it teaches you how to be a Musician, not just a player of a given instrument
Every once in a while a real musician like Mr. Harland comes along. Absolutely superb! Thank you!
3:48 glad to know even Harland hits the screw instead of the bell sometimes :)
hahahah :D
blapis89 BUT..... Because it's Eric Harland we're going to presume that this was premeditated and used as a musical interjection- not a mistake. 😉
Yeah He often play it well
The musicality and dynamics are so perfect. What an incredible artist. One of the best younger drummers in jazz.
4 years later and I still have to listen to this masterpiece! Your awesome Harland!
the song is wonderful, but the way you play your drums is incredible: you use your skill for pure art, it's like a poem
OMG ERIC YOUR A FREAKING BEAST MAN, you never seemd to amaze me with your independence. WOW I would love to study under your great knowledge and wisdom on the drums. You make me that much better and make me the drummer I am today. Love you Bruh
You have one of the lightest touches that I have heard on the drums. Very musical. Awesome technique as well
he has the most fluid drum set up, everything is placed to ring and reverberate etherial yet ephemeral. lovely warm shimmers that don't overtone too long.
Brilliant :-)
He inspires me to try to be myself on the drums.
So much music in just this tune, love his playing!
All I can say is WOW! The minimal size of his kit proves more does not mean better. What a sound. Being an old crooked stick drummer, it's amazing to see the straight stick technique provide this kind of sound. Wow!
Enchanted! just close your eyes, enjoy and let the drumming take you away! Shared to my FB wall .
This is almost a divine revelation on drums to me, but why does he not listen to the wide open spaces of the tunes he plays along? This peace of drumming drives the water of luck into my eyes!
Still.....and once more...thank you Eric !!!
One of the best sounding kits I have heard.
What a beautiful place in space you live.... I love it all.
Blown away!! Such a gift Eric has!! Thanks for putting this work out Eric, its truly inspirational.
I always love metal drumming but with this i realized how much jazz drumming the best is :D
As a deathmetal drummer, I'm amazed at this guys control, and over all feel. He really gets into his work, and plays some beautiful music
Very good sound

Chops man beautiful sounding drum kit and cymbals, great facility, great work,.Eric.
Nicely done. I really like the choice in music. Your cross-sticking is impressive.
Just finished watching a documentary on Monk. Is this odd? Sounds fantastically splendid !!!
Yes yes! World class man, this is delicious. What a genius idea too, having a second snare with the wires off instead of rack tom.
BEAUTIFUL tune, man...(man I love that classic Rhodes sound so much...)
Really enjoyable bro. Love your kit...rivets, cowskin etc. Thanks for sharing.
Eric is ridiculously good! Makes me want to go drum now!

Nice drumming bro! Great control over those sticks haha! Jazz isn't as easy to play as it looks!
Play along? Not in a million years!! :o)
I would have to live forever at least, to be able to learn to play the first minute... This is a wounderful played piece.

Very good.

legendary chops
How can a drummer follow along! It’s too awesome
This guy, Chic Corea, and Jeff Berlin would make an amazing acid jazz trio.
Wow, isn´t that the cover art used on Opeth brilliant album Morningrise?
