Eric won first chair in 1992-93 with the Regional and All State Jazz Band. He received a special Citation for Outstanding Musicianship in 1994 from the International Association of Jazz Educators. Career Eric has recorded over 45 recordings with various artists. Among these recordings, Let‚s get lost & Wandering Moon (Terence Blanchard on Sony Classical), Black Action Figure (Stefon Harris on Blue Note) and Land Of Giants (McCoy Tyner on Telarc) were nominated for Grammy Awards. With Terence Blanchard, Eric has played on 18 motion picture movie scores such as Bo Jangles (with Gregory Hines), Caveman's Valentine (with Samuel Jackson), Original Sin (with Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie), People I Know (with Al Pacino and Kim Basinger) and Dark Blue (with Kirk Russell). Performing live is one of Eric's greatest joys and he has had numerous opportunities to play with the greats in the jazz/music industry. Some of these artists include the late, great Betty Carter, Joe Henderson, Charles Lloyd, Joshua Redman, Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, McCoy Tyner, Michael Brecker, John Patitucci and Zakir Hussain. Eric is also part of the SF Jazz Collective, a new 8 piece cutting edge group brain stormed by Joshua Redman and featuring members like Bobby Hutchinson, Nicholas Payton, Miguel Zenon and more. Eric has ventured out into modeling for LLumo Vogue and the New Yorker Magazine by world-renowned photographer Arthur Elgort. In Down Beat's 2008 Critics Poll, Eric was awarded 1st Place in "Rising Star Drums". The New York Times printed an article featuring Eric Harland stating that "he is ...setting the rhythm of jazz's future."‰ Eric has also been featured in the Sept. 2002 issue of Modern Drummer. Eric would also love to give thanks to God for his nurturing and understanding that keeps him inspired in every moment. Endorsements Eric is currently endorsed by Yamaha Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, and Vater Sticks.

I've been thinking about Eric's pocket a lot lately. In latin percussion there's this thing called Masacote, which refers to the ghost notes between accents on the conga. In drumming, obviously, there's the same thing - that Clyde Stubblefield ghosted dialogue. I think where a lot of drummers who try to copy Eric err is they want to do the flourishes without getting the pocket - the masacote - together. But it doesn't work without that seductive, propulsive pocket. Just food for thought..

for me it was the opposite. this guy really inspired me to practice for hours every day. Listening to good drummers should be a motivation! Of course we won't probably never be as good as Eric but when you practice every day, in a few years you will be better than you ever imagined :D

I actually set aside my drums; stacked them up and put them in the corner to gather dust. I gave up drums because they were becoming too expensive to keep. I'm only 17 and get money here and there so keep that in mind. But then I saw your video, right here, this exact one. And it made me realize how powerful the drums are. Thank you, this video actually made me pick up the drums again. Thanks. Great, great drumming on here. :)

Luv it! Musical, expressive creativity in a format that encourages further exploration. This is really evolved playing. Very inspiring video. We need more of this type of playing on the musical scene today. Of course, I've always been a jazz fan anyway. Few drummers today have these capabilities or are even interested in finding their own distinctive sound. Guys like this are leading the way by rising above what's "popular" (i.e. mediocre) and taking the instrument to another level. Bravo!
