    Such a highly informative review here. I'm at 7k miles on my SEL AWD at just over 3 months and couldn't be happier. The few issues you've mentioned are hopefully resolved in future models and I will surely be upgrading in the future as well. Can't wait to see how this thing holds up after a few years. I always look forward to your videos and enjoy the highly detailed content. Keep up the great work!!

      Hi, tyres are a new cost for many. I remember when my uncle got a new Renault a few years ago and it needed rear tyres every 10k miles. I get 35k out of my RRS. I worry about creating a rubber mountain with EVs.

    In regards to sleeping in the Ioniq 5, the car comes with a utility mode that turns off all driving-related functions to maintain climate control, lights and infotainment system at greatly reduced energy cost.
    One could, in essence, go camping in their Ioniq 5 comfortably.
    Especially with the V2L function allowing you to plug in other electronics and appliances.

      I agree totally with your sentiments. I don't own an EV and still consider them primarily for a certain segment of the population (wealthy) at this time. I'm neither a fanboy or hater but I definitely find a lot of reviewers who fall into one or the other category. And among the EV fanboys, they are the Tesla fanboys and haters. It's really hard to find objectively which is why I enjoyed this review.

      Corbin, I just now discovered your channel and have subscribed. I have not yet gone back and looked at your previous videos so you may have already covered this, but do you ever provide any kind of suggestions or recommendations on how to actually BUY an Ionic 5. I set out to do just that about two months ago, but included the self-imposed goal of not paying a big dealership mark-up ($5,000 and more). So far, I have not found that possible to do. Is that basically the situation or am I just not searching enough? Thanks very much.

    • @TheIoniqGuy
      @TheIoniqGuy  2 года назад

      I have not covered the purchasing of Ioniq 5s. I think it's really tough out there right now. If you want to pay MSRP you should try and get on the list at Fred Beans Hyundai or Danbury Hyundai here in CT. Those are two of the most prominent dealers that won't sell over MSRP. If you're willing to settle for a base model, I think your odds of picking one up for MSRP on a dealer lot are probably much greater than SEL or limited trims. I think being a firm negotiator as well can also pay dividends. I never go into a dealership and act desperate. Always make them think you have other options than buying a car from them that day. If it's physically sitting on their lot, they want it gone and with careful negotiation, you could at least lower that dealer mark-up.

    • @johnwheat1542
      @johnwheat1542 2 года назад

      Thanks! Your comments are consistent with my experience. But, I have set my sights on an SEL, and those seem to be pretty popular. Right now, I’m trying to decide whether to just give in and pay a $5,000 premium or wait for the 2023’s to see if supply & demand evens out a bit. Obviously, though, there are also lots of risks in waiting - like inflation, MSRP increases, etc. Fortunately, I am not desperate, so we’ll see.

    I’m really liking your videos and I’m expecting my car to arrive in the next couple of days so this has been very helpful for me. I’m getting a vehicle with the Bose sound system and while sound quality isn’t super important to me I do appreciate good music. One solution if it’s really bothering people is just to go ahead and have the speakers replaced. Regarding the rear camera, did you speak to somebody at Hyundai? That seems the sort of thing that I would try to investigate under warranty as it’s clearly not working as anyone would expect and it should be up to them to fix. One of the great things I love about this new generation of cars is that so many of the annoying and niggling problems could often be fixed with a software update, getting them to actually do that is clearly the next issue!

  • @colincallahan8001

    Excellent overview. I’m at 4200 mi on my SE. I learn today the charging door is mechanical switch not capacitive. I thought it was not included in the SE. also learned about the hatch adjusters I agree about the seat belt rattle.
    The lock on walk away is soo annoying and I think it can be a software fix. Because it auto lock if you walk away and don’t open the door part of that is timer vs distance. But it senses you are near it must know when you’re not. This feels like laziness because the hardware seems like it’s there.
    One last comment. I had not audio from about 14:11 to 14:44 might be me but check it out.
    What air compressor do you use?
    Thx!

    I stumbled across your EXCELLENT informative review quite by accident. Most rewarding 30 (RUclips) minutes I've spent in a long time. We've owned a 2019 Bolt for 3 years and love it as our first BEV experience. Now we are looking to replace our faithful old 2nd car, a 2011 Sorento, with a similar sized BEV. The Ioniq 5 seems to be about the right size, and the more we read about it the better it sounds. Thanks for touching on so many critical points that most reviewers gloss over. It is clear that you think about the "little things" that can really affect the way a car "feels" over the long haul. If we decide to go the Ioniq 5 route, it will be because of thoughtful reviews like yours. THANK YOU!

    Lithium batteries definitely don't like to be fast charged when they're cold, so that's why they cap the rate. This is a good thing because it helps to protect the battery. I would love to get this car but I still love my current EV, a 2016 Kia Sol EV+ which I bought used in 2020 for less than $13000 with less than 18000 miles on it. LOVE it!

      I believe that's another reason LFP batteries are an option Tesla is now using because there's no charging rules. I would hope Hyundai and others are looking into LFP too. The real game changer will be solid-state batteries though.

    • @JustWasted3HoursHere
      @JustWasted3HoursHere Год назад +1

      @@rkgsd Solid state batteries seem great, and I believe they will be when they are finally used in large quantities in EVs, but they've been "right around the corner" for at least 5 years, probably more. There are a lot of companies working to bring solid state batteries to market (including some really big ones like Toyota), so it will happen. The question is when.
      One battery type I recently learned about, which could REALLY change things, is the Sodium Ion battery. Its main issue right now is its longevity: Only about 300 cycles compared to L-Ion's 3000 or so. But, it uses sodium - one of the most abundant minerals on Earth. The Fully Charged Show recently did a piece on the progress of this battery and I am keenly interested in its progress because sodium would be cheap, lower chance of fire and many other advantages. Here's the Fully Charged episode: ruclips.net/video/IBE0NADjSrE/видео.html

    Thank you for the review. Two questions: 1. Can you change the colors of the screens? Seems like it would be hard to see the writing on the white background? 2. How are the headrests? Many cars for the driver's head to lean forward, which has been a deal breker for me on some cars. I like to be able to put my shoulder blades against the back seat...but some headrests prevent this.

  • @kjvisual7

    There is hidden storage space underneath the cardboard that covers the subwoofer. So you can just slide that out and you'll notice that you have space on around the subwoofer the store small things. It would be interesting to make a storage divider system for that area.
    And you probably know already that you don't have sound when you're talking about opening the trunk.

    Thanks for the great review after your first 5,000 miles. I just got mine 2 weeks ago so still learning a lot from your videos. One of my biggest complaints is the same as yours. Why don't the handles retract as you walk away from the car. I forget sometimes to use the key fob to lock them or to press the door handle button. If I do this in a parking lot I am afraid that someone will walk by and hit them or try to push them in and break them. I see this as a huge miss. Have you contacted Hyundai to see if they could put this into one of their new SW updates for the future? That would be an excellent addition. Thanks again for all your great videos.

    My wife and I just drove our Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid on a 300 mile round trip. We get about 42 miles on a full charge which takes 4 hours with 220v charger. The Volt is 100% electric drive with a gasoline powered generator. We averaged 52mpg on the trip and there was no range anxiety because we can always buy gas for the generator. Because we rarely drive more than 40 miles in a given day we’re averaging more than 500mpg with no range anxiety. My opinion; Plug-in Hybrids rock way more than 100% electric.

We are just curious what might be wrong and wanted to know if you have any info. Thanks for your help.

    Those powered charge port doors are a prime example of "solving a problem that doesn't exist". There's no reason to not engineer the door mechanically, like any ICE car fuel door; easily eliminating that problem. And, inversely, there's no practical reason to go through all the cost and work to put a motorized door there.

    • @revirdkcalb
      @revirdkcalb 2 года назад +12

      No practical reason...But I think it's been decades since cars have stopped being only about practicality. I mean, i.e. do we really need motorized power windows and seats? How about motorized trunks? Do we really need auromatic lights and wipers? Automatic locking/unlocking of doors?
      Those are some example of things that we could live without them being motorized/automatic, but now have become "normal". So, what's really the difference compared to the motorized charge port?

    For what Hyundai is charging for this car, the shortcomings you mention such as the poor stereo and the lack of a rear window wiper (Canadian driver here who really needs a rear window wiper) are actually deal breakers for me. If and when I decide I need a new car I will consider the ioniq 5 but Hyundai needs to address the issues to make me take the plunge.

    If you go to update dot and their domain. You will see the navigation update as the second option. Not sure if navigation offers a fix for the camera blank issue. Notification > audio update fixed my issue but i5 does not have an audio update yet.

Unfortunately dealer said to me yesterday no idea when I may get it…he spoke of potentially year(s). And he said waiting times are worst than ever. My heart sunk. I am SOOOOO disappointed. Do you have any insight as to why production is so limited? I know most stock goes to the EU counties. And I know about the chip shortage. I’d wait a year but not years….bouhou!

      @@TheIoniqGuy For another $5k? I have the Bolt EUV and virtually everything you complain about in the HI5, the EUV has no issue. Rear seats fold down from the rear. Seats are ventilated. No issues with the rear camera and it HAS a front camera, and can therefore give me a 360-degree top-down view, which, if you've never had this, is FANTASTIC. I also can flip a switch in the rearview mirror which changes the mirror to show a wide-angle view using the camera(!!). Great for when I have bikes on the back. Sounds system is decent enough. Range is similar to the HI5 AWD. Door handles aren't fancy, but autolock. Charge port is just a spring loaded type, which doesn't seem all that different than the electronic one on the HI5, except is actually works all the time. Anyway, yeah, the HI5 is a bit more "luxury", I suppose, and the RWD SEL has 303 mile range and the faster charging, (I believe), but those things aren't THAT big a deal when you can charge at home and you don't go on huge trips all the time. Also, the RWD SEL is $5k more than my tricked out (except SuperCruise, but has Adaptive AutoCruise, which is great), EUV Premier. Yes, it's still tempting to have the cool sideview mirros and the faster charging, the few times a year I need it, and the 50 miles more of range - again, the few times a year I need it - but... not sure it's worth the "upgrade".

    Regarding the software and the maps, I use the car's maps all the time. I like the animation on the heads up display. I like the information it provides in the driver's console. And I like the way the map looks in 3D mode. I actually can't go back to Android's map system. Which is surprising because I really really enjoyed Android's Maps. That said, the interface is slow. It has at least a one to two second response time for anything. That is maddening. The voice commands aren't that helpful. But I do need to practice and use it more to learn its quirks and how I can make that system efficient for me.
