  • You guys have been asking these questions for months now so I decided to go straight to the source. A few weeks ago I spoke to Hyundai's Senior Manager for Public Relations here in the United States and we talked all things Ioniq 5. I had a list of questions to ask and in this video I'll go over some of the answers I received from him. Let me know in the comment section what other questions you would want me to ask in in a future conversation.

      @@msnajm Here in Denmark, they have confirmed that MY23 cars that are ordered now will include a "pre-conditioner" that will preheat the battery for fast charging. The big question for all of us who already have the car with the heatpump and battery heater is if a software update can enable this on our cars. In Germany and Norway the official wording is that they expect to be able to update existing cars but it has never been confirmed 100%

    Thanks for all the information you managed to get. For the European solution to the rear wiper, that's ridiculous! Unless they plan on putting a tiny little wiper on the camera. Here in the North where we get snow, already people are having issues with the backup cameras and sensors that go haywire when putting their cars in reverse because they get gummed up with snow and ice on the road. So making your rear view mirror dependent on a camera (even if it's in the spoiler) will likely be totally useless.

I've seen forum questions since 2019 and the official announcement from Google that widescreen is an option now. So 3 years later and the excuse is…? Had widescreen on a Mazda rental and it looks so great. I see no reason why car play on Hyundais has proper resolution and widescreen support but Android Auto doesn't.

    Thanks for the hard work and time asking those questions. I just had one more why didn't Hyundai just add another driver /zero gravity seat on the passenger side like VW did with the ID.4 and ID.3 dual seat massagers? Hyundai put them in with the other markets just like glove draw but changed N.American car strange. 🤔 Oh Motormouth Channel in Canada said the rear window wiper complaint has gone back to Korea also Koreans aren't to fond of the idea either they're complaining about it too on RUclips. Check out Asian Petrolhead's channel he's said he doesn't like it either so Hyundai knows. I can see a wiper plus camera option coming to N. American market.

    Default drive mode: Sounds like we need a 3rd party mod (probably can plug into OBD-II port) that selects the desired drive mode on start. Similar mods are used to disable engine stop/start in ICE vehicles.
    As for the EPA requirement, note that, "requires default to the most efficient" really means, "requires default to the most efficient for the test." This is why ICE vehicles have all added engine stop/start. "most efficient on the test" may or may not match your driving conditions.

    Interesting to hear about the i-pedal thing. But why would that be less efficient than the levels 1-3? It just allows for more regen, it's mostly about the driver's foot. @@TheIoniqGuy While I am at it, I'd also like a washer for the back camera as it can get dirty after it rains. It's simple to clean, but would be a nice add on.
      I'm also a little surprised that regen wouldn't go to "auto" every time you start the car if EPA says it must start with the most efficient setting. I'm still surprised a profile option to set it manually per profile, with a displayed message that it's not the most efficient regen, wouldn't get around the EPA requirement and allow people to switch to what they want after selecting their profile. I do think this is slightly overblown since i-pedal is always hold left and auto is always hold right so it doesn't take very long to change it.

  • @HydraliskX
    @HydraliskX 2 года назад +3

    I assume it's not so much that EPA requires level 3 to be default for any arbitrary reason - it's that the Ioniq 5's EPA range rating is from using level 3 and therefore must be defaulted. I believe it's the similar reason why some ICE vehicles have engine auto start-stop turned on by default every single time you start the vehicle regardless of what you set it to before (just to get 1 more MPG during the EPA city cycle no doubt).
    i-pedal is objectively worse for range on the highway, so I suspect that also contributes.

    • @BIKESystems
      @BIKESystems 2 года назад +1

      I don’t buy this answer from Hyundai. I own a BMW i3 and it defaults to “comfort” on startup which is it’s least efficient drive mode. I want an Ionic 5 and I am 100% sold on single pedal driving. Maybe separate one pedal driving from efficiency so we can have great regen-braking to a stop and higher efficiency on the highway.

    • @rcammoore
      @rcammoore 2 года назад

      Really? Why would I-pedal be less efficient at highway driving? Doesn’t it basically just replace friction braking with regen braking at lower speeds to bring the vehicle to a stop, but at higher speeds it’s basically the same as L3?

    the range discrepancy between RWD and AWD is not largely due to weight of second motor. The second motor generate extra torque and HP and to do that it requires more energy from the battery. Since the battery size between both model is same, the extra energy spent by second motor reduces range. You will have some loss due to 2nd motor and related hardware weighing the car down but it is not as significant. I think you can test this by putting the car in Eco mode which if I am correct, disconnects the front motor.

    • @karstenpedersen7749
      @karstenpedersen7749 2 года назад

      I think the range penalty is more about the extra inertia from 2 driveshafts and the differential.
      The front motor is decoupled when driving efficiently, or so I'm told.

      I made a whole video about how I power my house. ruclips.net/video/ZmmhOXsIRjw/видео.html
      It depends where you live. In countries outside of the US where 240V is the norm for all household circuits, it will output 3.8kW. Here in the US, it’s limited to 1.8kW because we have 120V as our standard voltage for hole circuits

    • @Seitenwerk
      @Seitenwerk Год назад

      Exactly as The Ioniq Guy said. Because the US has a much lower voltage it's not possible to output more power. Everywhere else its around 240V so you will get the 3,8kW output power. The same problem is with charging TVs in the US, because of the low voltage charging via domestic plug is not viable as it would take ages while 3,8kW is pretty decent for charging over night or with solar panels.

Then the rwd long range 77kwh battery and the awd 77kwh battery. Both of those have heat pump/battery warming/800v.
      *ultimate package is extra trim that can be added only to the awd model.

    I work in R&D of an embedded systems manufacturer for industry equipment and have worked in automotive. My guess is that Hyundai has so many hardware variants and revisions out in the market due to the fact that they had to use different parts because of supply chain issues, chip shortages and so on that it is too difficult and therefore costly for them to develop proper improvements for all variants out there. Heck, they are even destroying working features with their updates (lane keeping assist).
    I am afraid they simply will not get any significant updates out to us customers. Would be very surprised if they do.

    If you get another chance, can you ask him why the north American ioniq 5 is only allowed (or spec'd) to tow 2000lbs (900kg) and the european/Australian model can tow 3500lbs(1500kg)?
    I've sent an email, but they just responded by saying that I should read the user manual for towing capacity limits. It doesn't mention why the limit is so much lower. :(

      I'll add it to the list!

    • @JustinShidell
      @JustinShidell 2 года назад

      The explanation is twofold:
      First, the USA has much, much more stringent towing testing standards-you can review them yourself, under SAE J2807. They're rigorous, and essentially guarantee that your vehicle can tow (including acceleration, cornering, stopping, and brake-hold capacity) whatever it's (USA) rated for in some of the harshest conditions possible.
      Second, towing in Europe and Australia (the rest of the world, as far as I understand) is typically done at slower speeds. It's common (and acceptable) to tow at 45 MPH (or even less.) That might be OK on county highways here, but on the interstates, that'd be dangerous.
      I would bet my Limited AWD you can tow 3500 lbs. with it safely at lower speeds (under 55). Obviously, you need an appropriate hitch for it, and I don't believe the Hyundai stock hitch would support that load (being Class I), but Torklift Central's should (I think, I haven't looked up the specs to confirm.) You might even be OK to exceed 55, but I wouldn't tell you as much without testing it myself, first. Under 55, though, I'm confident would be fine.

    • @johnmoss7227
      @johnmoss7227 2 года назад +3

      @@JustinShidell In the UK, When towing a caravan, you can drive at a maximum speed of 50 mph on single carriageway roads. This is increased to 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways, unless a lower limit is in force. Motorhomes have a similar limit.

I opened the driver's side with the physical key but the car wouldn't boot up. We eventually started it with a booster battery. The 12v battery was showing just 4v on a multimeter, so it's unsurprising that the car was not working! It's at the dealer now (for an unrelated reason) and I'm hoping they will feed back to Hyundai. I have no accessories plugged into the car. Unlike an ICE vehicle there is no reason to restrict charge maintenance of the 12v battery to when "the engine is running" - surely a better strategy would be to charge the 12v battery when it needs it...
