this center console was designed by a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin starting in 1993, after 30 years of development and almost half a trillion dollars, this was the result. congress has already earmarked another 15 years budget for support and maintenance programs and possibly cupholders in the future.
You pretty much nailed what I was thinking when I saw the slide track: looks like some military grade assembly designed by a government contractor with an unlimited cost plus budget.
Various congressional subcommittees layered new requirements to appease constituents after each redesign. Originally it did not slide, but lobbyists called for it to slide. After that redesign lobbyists mandated a dual opening cubby, forcing another redesign. 11 redesigns later you get this beast.
@@bartwaggoner2000 ive heard some constituents criticize certain design decisions but i believe with further iterations the team will have clearly pivoted this project from a near-miss to what i would describe as ongoing success-in-progress in the near future -- but ONLY if we continue to give it the support it needs to truly thrive

"You can make another car out of this!" I love Munro!!!! :) :) :)
And "This is a good example of a bad example." 🙂
Never worry about going long, we love this stuff!! 😊
The MVP was the guy who told the engineer to keep going! Sandy reacting to bad engineering is some of the best content out there!
@@Metalfan888 for real! They could a whole series on engineering goofs..
💯 this is the beauty of RUclips. You don’t always have to stick to the expected format, particularly when things get interesting!
I really liked the ambush you could see the magnitude of what type of errors where made just by the reaction! Sandy looked like he was itching to design one better 😅
Another great video! Loved the concept of demonstrating the reassembly to Sandy! I could have watched another half hour of this! The obvious care of Munro's engineers really makes your videos so personable!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@MunroLive Your videos are seriously inspiring. To the point that I would honestly consider engineering, if I was young again. I love the videos the most, where you really go into the "nuts and bolts" of designing for production, be it stitching, overmolding, assembly orientations, parts elimination, etc.
@@markusflorianthomas As an engineer and old I find these videos very enjoyable and makes you appreciate the work Sandy's group makes.
Kudos to Tylor! He gauged Sandy's interest, got him involved, had everything prepped, sped up the process when needed, and made some very good educational content. Also, good reflexes to catch the fasteners that fell off the wall.
This is a great team!
Except when he interrupted Sandy's story about the minivan's condole.
After watching numerous videos from Munro live it’s obvious that everyone at Munro are obviously very competent, very articulate and passionate about what they do. Very educational and a joy to watch. Kudos to Munro and team!
This is how software development would look like if it was physical.
hahaha this is perfect
Great conment, exactly right
I like how you didn't say "bad software". It's true all software is like this. Imagine AI saving hours, weeks, months of code development.
That scares me!
I can totally relate to this. Years ago we have this infamous block of code containing 3000 lines of ONE if-then-else statement! Everyone that touches it is so afraid of breaking previous developers stuff, and too chicken to optimize code. Plus no one in QA or business users ever tells us features that were retired 😂
This sliding console is exclusively offered in the highest trim level of the IONIQ 5. Limited in the USA, Ultimate in Canada and so on. The other trim levels have a standard fixed console.
I'm really impressed how well Tyler knew this assembly top-to-bottom, considering he wasn't involved with the design. He knew where every part went immediately when asked, the orientation, which fasteners and which direction they went in, everything. He did a great job walking Sandy through the entire assembly.
Hyundai, look at this as an opportunity to improve your production rate and lower your costs. Put aside any shaming of whoever designed this system and instead use it as a learning opportunity.
Learn from the best and you may undercut your competitors.
it's literally his job to deconstruct and document the part lolllll how do his balls taste in your mouth god damn
Just wish he'd have had the parts count/weight numbers at hand, wouldn't be surprised to see Sandy in need of an IOctovalve inhalent! :)
Hi Munro team, it would be great if you could do a follow-up video showing the redesign process, and a comparison in material cost, assembly time/cost, and complexity of manufacture, number of parts. Add a little Sandy rant to it and it would be a dream video. 👌
I own an Ioniq 5 (wife and kids agree it is the best car we have ever owned). Love watching Munro. The rule of "does it HAVE to move?' is a great design question. My answer regarding the Ioniq 5 centre console is 'Yes - the console should move'. We move the console regularly. I used it just today - my son is learning to drive and when I picked him up I simply moved the console back, slid easily from drivers seat to passenger seats like the old days of open front bench seats. My theory with the Ioniq 5 (I could be wrong) is that Hyundai saw an opportunity to bring to market an EV that would help improve their market standing and reputation. I think they put their 'A team' of engineers on it that were told to 'spare no expense'. I'm not convinced they are making much profit on the Ioniq 5 but its purpose is more as a 'halo EV car' for the brand, not so much a profit maker. The centre console design highlights that Hyundai's focus was not building cheap but instead building robust and feature rich. The centre console is very sturdy from my use - my 3 teenage kids have tested it fully!
Great comment! I also think that a heavier console is a more sturdy one 👍
It’s cool to hear a customer is getting some use out of it!
Question: would you be more, or less, happy, if it had seat-mounted armrests and some shallow Tupperware on the floor?
Loving Sandy’s thumbnails lately!!! Keep them coming! Haha
That was great! I used to be in charge of manufacturing engineering at the original Silicon Valley startup. We learned Design for Manufacturability early on and Sandy clearly nails it. I watch these videos because it continues to be a fascinating topic and I would actually work there for free if I could. People tell me I'm nuts when I tell them I preferred working to retiring.
Me too. I will do my best to avoid retirement.
I am laughing all the way, OMG! Sandy reaction was priceless, and he new that a bomb was coming -- still unprepared for that level of a bomb.
At the start of the video, Sandy did not seem to be interested in doing a video today. After about 5 min, he light up. This console is Sandy fuel. Nice job to the team on getting him involved with the console review.
Sandy saw an opportunity to set up a pay to play session with Hyundai.
Great video, glad you guys let it run longer. I could have watched them do the full assembly and enjoyed every minute of it while Sandy commented. 👍
You two are a great presentation pair. I love the (sometimes not so) subtle humor. After years of serious examinations from Sandy and associates, these companies can't seem to help themselves. Thanks for another wonderful video.
I watched completely stunned by engineering insanity on display. This will be bookmarked to revisit whenever I think I am having a bad day. Superb video!
Thanks, Richard!
Love Tyler’s enthusiasm. Great work.
I think the reason why the slide isn't part of the console is it's only used on the higher trim levels, the base Ioniq 5 doesn't have a moving console. So they just make one console for all the cars and install the slider as needed. But I am glad to hear it's over built rather than cheaply made.
Yah, individual part to prevent rattling noise? Sign me up on that. At least some customers choose to pay for it...
Thanks for this Video! But please keep in mind that if you slide the console backwards you can easily switch from the driver to the passenger seat, without any acrobatics or the need to lift your feet! Which also means that you can sit on the console with your full body weight. All plastic, probably not the best idea. As an end customer I appreciate this robust solution. You can sit on the console and the floating armrest and nothing moves or crunches at all.
Can be made from fewer individual parts, definitely, less robust, please Not! Best regards from an IONIQ 5 owner since 2 years with a sliding center console, i love it ❤
Because you’re an IONIQ 5 owner and obviously have had some experience with the center console, I have a question for you.
I can see why it’s convenient that it slides, so you can easily get to the drivers seat if the drivers door is blocked.
The fact that it slides is not a problem. As Sandy points out, it could be done a lot simpler though.
But you specifically defend its robustness so you can sit on it.
Why would you sit on it?
@@holgergrauslund "Why would you sit on it?" is a pointless question. Someone _will_ sit on it, and thus it needs to be strong enough to support those forces.
"There's a linkage!?"
I lost it. Thanks for the informative and enjoyable video!
I would've loved a 2 hour video of Tyler diligently assembling that console with general commentary from Sandy.
Great video! Thanks!!
I just replaced my fixed center console in my 2023 Ioniq 5 SEL with a sliding center console from a 2024 Ioniq 5 Limited. It was extremely easy as it only required removing 4 nuts (two at the front and 2 at the back) from the floor mounted studs plus one combination electrical connector for the 4 USB ports and wireless charge pad. I'm a big fan of the sliding console because I'm a big person and I cherish the knee space that the sliding console provides when slid to the aft position. Also the skins are interchangeable between the two if the color happens to be different. To access the nuts you only need to remove the console floor which just snaps into place.
I'm guessing that the actual consoles are fully assembled before arriving to the main assembly line where they are just quickly dropped in place.
I own a 22 Ioniq 5 Limited, and I think that the center console is so solidly built because, when the HVAC is ripping, there's a noticeable shake in the console. It's definitely over engineered, but otherwise it would be a rattly mess in an otherwise whisper quiet electric vehicle.
Spot on, but hey, the Tesla biased guys don't seem to remember that Teslas goes rattling before hitting 10,000 mi.
@@RupOase Yeah, I noticed that definite pro-Tesla bias. Makes most of their reviews suspect if they diss on all the other manufacturers and brighten up during any Tesla related discussion.
I agree, they spent money in a position of the car that the customer will be in contact with doften. This solid feelimg makes tha vehicle feel like a premium car.
But a lot can most likely be saved, and it would still be nice and solid!
Agreed-it’s definitely a solid construction as it should be for a moving assembly. I can’t imagine how cheap it’d feel if it was all plastic as he suggested.
Now if only the door handles were metal instead of plastic… 🤨
@@perjonsson7343 totally agreed. I prefer the over-engineering in high points of contact/interface. It feels like such a solidly built car, especially when compared to more “efficient” designs like Tesla.
The glaring exception though, is the door opener handles-I wish they were metal instead of plastic. Especially given that many passengers miss the elegantly simply armrest door handle and try to pull from the door opener. 😳
So Hyundai and GM are entering into a partnership. Can't wait for that teardown. 😳
You start to appreciate its strength when you find yourself stuck in the back seat with the child door locks engaged. I've had to climb over this console more than once and I'm no lightweight gymnast!
Hahaha, this is better than Mach E cooling review (bring out the octo valve! ). The flabbergasted look on Sandy…. I totally get Team Munro philosophy now. Thanks folks
After seeing this construction, no wonder the jump from the SEL to the Limited trim is as much as it is. This has to account for a good chunk of it with these manufacturing techniques. Can't wait for more Ioniq videos!
Now I know why my MY2022 Ioniq 5 took soooo long to receive ... and, I thought it was due to a slow boat from South Korea; my mistake.
I love the longer videos, more please! It really gives the presenters time to explain and demonstrate.
Super! Sandy's back with his unfiltered non politically correct commentary. Love it.
An all time Munro Classic - This presentation will go down in history - How did Hyundai fall in this hole?
Would love to hear Hyundai's response to this, the engineering diagrams alone would be impressive and all for a centre console. The advantage of this is that it's a good employer and that's about it.
I'm impressed at the level of "how not to do things" this represents.
Yes, it was a long video (for Munro), but WORTH IT! I can see why Sandy would have an aneurysm over this monstrosity. I hope that they do a video on the redesign - and it's fine if that one is long too.
Loved every minute. This is what I subscribe for.
You can see how Sandy is passionate about lean design. The company he has built is all about dissolving such complex monstrosities into simpler, more effective units. His critique of the first Tesla Model 3 underbody was the impetus for Elon to go to aluminium gigacasts. Well done on your vision Sandy. The teachings of Dr Demming have flowed down through you to the EV era. Munro, a legacy of greatness from simplicity.
In some ways, the future of Tesla was dramatically altered by the Munro teardown of Model 3. Gigacastings leads to can we do a structural battery pack, that leads to yes but we would want a new form factor for the battery, which leads to the tabless battery design, etc.
Nice to see Sandy in a video again. Made me click. I miss his color commentary along with the serious engineers. Also don't worry about going long on the video, this is youtube gold.
First RUclips ad to appear during this broadcast: IONIQ 6. Bless.
Amazing episode gentlemen!! Add this one to the Greatest Hits album with the Mach-e frunk.
What I want to know is: Which OEMs have taken Sandy’s advice on how to make things less expensively, so they can increase their profit margins? I understand why manufacturers want to squeeze every dollar. But the sliding console in the Ioniq 5 Ultimate (Limited) works well and feels solid. As a customer I have no desire to complain about that.
I expect this to get lost in the ~600 current comments, but no matter. I'm currently replacing a failed water pump on my ol' 2002 Ford Ranger 3.0L. I've done Ford water pumps before & my description of Ford is: "Ford puts the water pump on the assembly line first & then bolts the rest of the car to it." Unbelievable the amount of stuff I have to move out of the way to get access to all the pump bolts. I did a Buick water pump once & it was ridiculously easier. This excellent video exposes that some things just never change.
From a manufacturing cost perspective this console is a nightmare but from a consumer standpoint I absolutely love it.
It's built like a tank that will last the life of the vehicle and likely show zero signs of wear or noise or flex - ever.
I bet a snap together poly pro unit would be a limp creaky rattly mess in a few years after creep, heat and mechanical cycling takes its toll.
North America seems to love Fisher Price interiors where every knob, lever, button, latch, panel or handle flexes when you use it but I sure don't and it looks like Hyundai definitely doesn't either in this case.
PRICELESS!!!!!❤Munro rant, I thought his head was going to explode 🤯
Sandy just has random cards in his pocket with rules 😂
Loved the deep dive! didn't mind the length at all
I dread to think how long it must take to assemble that console. It's bewildering.
over an hour… maybe…
Imagine when it fails cuz you know they made it that way to fail just after warranty, cha ching.
Cant put all those parts in a box, shake it, and get the final product.
EVs aren't expensive because they're electric, but because some idiot in the design department has gone out of their way to make them 'futuristic'...
@@KevinT3141 There may partly be some truth in that but a lot of it is the huge expense of the BATTERY PACK ! You could buy an entire lower cost ICE car for the same as the replacement cost of many packs.
Feels like someone at Hyundai wanted to give a friend's subcontractor "work" ?
I'm picking up my new Ioniq 5 this week and the first thing I'm going to look at is how this centre console is put together!
Think about this another way, they just moving towards recyclable interiors. You can easily melt aluminum, but you cannot do anything except burning with glass filled plastic. Though it's definitely now what Hyundai's engineers have thought, I managed to found one benefit of such design. Also, maintaining assembly process complexity ensures high availability of jobs.
Bare minimum if they wanted to keep the slide then they could re-engineer the main slide itself. Make a re-designed center console use 4 bolts that can simply use locating pins inside and attach the back of center console to rear of slide, 2 bolts inside towards front / middle. Then they could eliminate the slide bump stops itself since its positive locked to the main slide mechanism (which can be physical mounted now - so no need to worry about it coming off vs. taking whole console off). Then the main console could just be molded like EVERY other console...
I'm not in the industry, just an artist/painter/sculptor, so I'll throw out a guess, re: snap it together then added fasteners.
They built the column and then discovered it rattled or buzzed after x-number of miles driven, or x-number of times the column was slid front to back.
This was particularly audible in the otherwise dead-quiet EV, and the fasteners were added to dampen / kill the buzzing.
Low cost to use the added parts rather than to redesign the column . . . either that or the shipping deadline would be missed owing to production delays a redesign would create.
This analysis is my favourite episode to date. Sandy at his best, and Tylor too. 👍
Yes. I’ve skipped watching a lot of stuff lately but in this video the outrage and confusion is palpable. Great video!
Really a great walkthrough. This ‘design’ reminded me of my first days of programming. All the different pieces and parts to address what wasn’t address earlier. KISS… Take team Munro. ✌️🤓
This guy is so proud to show Sandy what the heck’s going on with this monstrosity
Great video. Every time Tyler said ‘oh it gets worse’ Sandy had that ‘someone put a turd in the tumble dryer?’ look on his face.
The algorithm fed me this video. (I don't normally watch your stuff unless Tesla is in the title.)
But it is amazing, just amazing.
"A good example of a bad example."
Great video. Well done, Tyler.
The general level of overall competence in evidence at Monro is remarkable.
Glad you enjoy it!
Sandy got to the nub of the matter - variation. It's amazing at how easy it becomes for a thing or two to wander out of place, and that cascades into a bunch of other things getting out of place and malfunctioning. And indeed, the fewer parts, the less there is to vary. The old adage, keep it simple, still pertains. Really great video!
My first reaction was, my gosh!, think of the the stack-up tolerance error. I don’t see a lot of slotted holes to help deal with that.
🙋♂️ THANKS SANDY,TYLER,AND THE MUNRO TEAM 🧐 EDUCATING US 💚💚💚
Thanks for watching!
Love to Sandy's passion in a design review meeting if this assembly was the subject of the meeting.
Sandy's state of confusion 😕 at 19:26 is priceless... "Not done yet?"
Rube Goldburg is very proud.
As a Ioniq owner this was an amazing video :-)
The flabbergasted look on Sandy's face was just something else :D
I thought he was going to faint at one point.
I love this... should have a whole series of Sandy Munro reaction videos
When I saw the screenshot that said it had over 400 parts, I paused video and went and made popcorn just to sit and watch Sandy’s head explode
I love this format. Do not let Sandy see what is going on with the disassembly and spring it on him with the camera running. But my first question would be; "Why does a console have to move anyway?"
The console moves to let you adjust the armrest position. And the seat lays back with a retractable ottoman so the driver can relax and rest while plugged in to charge.
The moving console and back seats are the most important feature of the Ioniq5!
@@stephenj4937 And where is the plug for the driver? The Koreans do not have Netflix and RUclips in their cars, they must have direct brain interfaces. But i could not find the plug for my NBI - My Neuralink direct Brain Interface.
@@wolfgangpreier9160 That plug is in front of the console where you can't reach it, for safety purposes while driving ;-)
@@ScubaSteveCanada Ahh i see, when i next sit in one i have to look again.
It sounds like the center console was not typical for Hyundai, but it was a great demonstration to help understand what Monroe & Associates does for efficiency. I mean, I learned from the Monroe Live about the importance of minimizing parts and simplifying assembly, etc., but this really showed how much can be gained by improving design and how crazy a design can get, even from a top manufacturer.
Interesting video for a nerd like me. Thanks for doing this. Sandy has brought in some young guns and is passing his trade down. Good to see.
That was enthralling to watch 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This sliding console is only available on the Limited, which is a large price bump over the SE. It is a fantastic feature though. I think you guys need to keep in mind the Ioniq 5 is supposed to be a halo car for Hyundai EVs and they put a lot of effort to get a great car with less attention to costs on this.
😂
Great analysis. Hopefully we get to see the redesign!
The thing I never move but totally appreciate in my Ioniq 5. 😉
Thank you so much Hyundai for bringing us this episode, and the potential workshop video.
Bro!!! Awesome teardown - great work and you gotta love Sandy's reaction to this monstrosity !! Great !!!
You worked at Ford, the car maker with more recalls for DEFECTS than any other maker in the world, Munro Motors!!!
Love the mention of die drafting. Monroe Rocks!
The looks on Sandy’s face would be Oscar worthy if Sandy was acting.
I thought Sandy would need an ambulance by the end of the video from the amount of shock 😂😂😂
Sandy at his best and in his element
you have to watch Ioniq 5 center console instruction video and find that it warrants the complicated design. The arm rest is floating design which needs all that steel structure on the other end. The complicated and heavy sliding mechanism is warranted because you don't want the thing to rattle in a few years while at the same time operate as smoothly as the price of the car. I also like this feature of a sliding center console as I'm never fan of having a huge partition between the driver and passenger, as the interior will feel far smaller.
I like or maybe almost the things Hyundai has done to the Ioniq 5. One major drawback that I wont be buying one is their use of pouch cells. You don't want to use those cells except for ultra portable like a phone or handheld devices.
I love all the exclamations! I think Sandy needs a drink after this.
I can only imagine that this design was finished so late in the process they had to go with it.
Can you make this assembly a competition between munro employees and see who can assemble it the fastest? 😂
I feel like a drinking game needs to be blended into this somewhere...
Yes, that's a extremely complicated piece, but… I really like the adjustable console in the Ioniq 5 Limited. It's a great feature, and maybe Hyundai will figure out a way to make it easier, simpler to build.
Sandy did criticise the potential for stacking tolerance errors. But the functionality of the console does seems really nice. Hopefully Hyundai can improve the cost of this design.
I believe the point is that the assembly could be greatly simplified without losing functionality or losing feeling of quality and solidity.
Screw and spring manufacturers love this one weird trick!
Absolutely WOW!
Yes,its amazing, the Ioniq5 is so much better then any Tesla!Good job!
It violates rules that haven't even been written yet. It's a treasure trove of new Munro rules.
I don’t have anything specific to say other than, this is a really really fantastic video. May be my favorite Munro video so far. Very engaging
Wow, thank you!
Thank you, Sandy and the Munro team. I am really curious to know where the centre console was designed and who manufactures it? Lastly, it would be really interesting to see who can assemble this the fastest. Maybe, a handful of you at Munro could start a ionic 5 fastest assembly time ladder to see who can come out on top? Better yet, why not get say five viewers to go to Munro, give each of them say half an hour to practice and see which one can do it the fastest? Prizes to the winners. Lotsa love from Toronto to all ❤❤❤
If you look at Sandys´ face through the video it just goes from happy, confused, shocked, bewildered, angry. He´s gonna need a couple beers to calm down after witnessing this.
What the heck, how does Munro find such talented young engineers who are so comfortable presenting? Very impressive, congratulations Sandy and Sue.
I don't think they FIND them, I think empower and grow them.
@@ryuuguu01 Well said.
I wonder about the "cut outs" not being able to recycle. 30 years ago I worked on aluminum dross recycling via plasma torch, so I can't see why the cut outs could not also be melted down and returned into the process. Not saying "most efficient", given the power hungry nature of anything ALU, but I would love to be told I am wrong on this.
obviously the aluminum cut outs and be recycled, but it takes effort to cut them out then the cut outs need to be moved to recycle path. a more efficient design would eliminate the need to make the cuts at all
Great idea to get Sandy wound up on fundamentals!
Sandy’s face @ 19:53 says it all 😂 Looking forward to the redesign!
Great format. We need a Sandy temperature graphic overlay for these ;-)
Definitely think a hyundai redesign is worth it! I love my ionq 6 & i'd love for them to do even better in the future! If my car has similar issues, then omg there's miles to be regained in weight shaving of the interior.
Yes Tesla has still to learn so much!I am so happy my brother bought a Ioniq6
please make more of this type of videos.
Sandy was actually on his way to fire Tyler, because the rest of the team was done with the entire Ionic teardown 5 days ago, then Tyler started talking VERY QUICKLY... 😂
Before & after #Redesign videos would be super cool!!
This is useful information. If you want to console Sandy, keep it simple.
