As a local I can confirm that absolutely no locals ever use the strip for commuting. The exact opposite, we try to avoid it at any and all cost. Shut it down, shut it down forever! And no, locals do not live in the casinos, and no we do not all work in casinos.

The problem still remains: if we didn't have the Ukraine war, Russia would still be in the calendar and we'll be fighting (ok, not we, but the organizers) to see which track loses F1. And it's going to keep happening. NY mayor already said they want a NY GP, many old circuits like Monaco or Hockenheim were very vocal about the insane costs FIA and Liberty asks them to hold F1 races, and those costs exist solely because oil-backed countries in the Middle East pushed millions down Liberty's throat for 10 year long contracts, so if you want to be in the calendar, you need to pay. In the other hand, Liberty put money out of their pocket to organize Miami and Vegas GP, which bring more American fans yes yes, but I'm not sure they bring the "right" kind of fans.
I want to see Sepang, Hockenheim, Turkey again in F1, but sincerely I understand them, screw Liberty Media.

as a local in Las Vegas, I think it's safe to say that we dont have huge impact mentally on what happens at the strip due to events. cuz we never go on the strip. its such a huge tourist place that we stay away from. so having an F1 race at the strip is a great idea because that's where our economy comes from. and we're also used to the crazy events that happened there.

    • @JustinJondle
      @JustinJondle 2 года назад +18

I'm not a local, but even I know this. There are ways for tourists and employees to get around on the strip without driving and locals don't go to the strip. I think Nolan's take on the casino's stance is also completely opposite of reality. Casinos will welcome the influx of guests and the premiums strip facing rooms will command that weekend. Also, very few casinos' parking is on the strip side so they aren't going to care about the driveways being blocked. Vegas is uniquely suited to host thousands of people in a very condensed space, the airport is very close to the strip, and flights are generally on the less expensive side.

I think the issue is with every resident and business that lays inside the track, no just the strip. I have never had the pleasure of going to Las Vegas, nor do I know where the touristy areas start/stop. But I think we can say with almost 100% certainty that there will be an impact on locals due to the road closures, especially given the size of the track. I honestly thought the main issue with this video is the pretense that the Las Vegas GP HAS to replace another GP, there are currently 22 (including the loss of the Russian GP) races I believe, with a cap of 25 races, so they very well could just add another. Liberty Media would also obviously increase the budget cap to accommodate for the additional track I feel

    • @JustinJondle
      @JustinJondle 2 года назад +3

@@chriscringe7506 The only thing in the infield are the casinos from Planet Hollywood to The Plazzo. Your comment made me realize I didn't *really* know where the track was going so I looked it up. From Harmon Ave to Sands Ave and Las Vegas Blvd to Koval Ln. and Las Vegas Blvd. already has walking overpasses. I don't think it is possible to have a less impacted city for a street course. So it is more likely 100% certain that it will not impact locals, except hotel employees, as the local in this thread stated. I stand by my statement that Las Vegas is uniquely suited to host a race (or any event attracting tens of thousands of people). Making an exciting race out of the grid layout streets is a valid argument though. Your point about the video's main focus being the replacement of another race is also very valid; they would obviously increase the budget cap to accommodate an additional race.

Las Vegas Blvd (the Strip) may be the most known road, but it is not the “main” road. Locals would rather take any other street than LVB. Even locals working at the Strip casinos don’t use it because the employee access points are off of smaller roads behind the properties. Those access roads will have to be used by locals and tourists during the event, so that could be a little added headache. But it’s the hosting casinos looking for the revenue being brought by tourists who are making that decision to limit tourist access to the boulevard.
The strip gets shut down for special events increasingly regularly for things like New Year’s Eve and marathons. This could be the biggest endeavor the city has put on due to the set up/tear down time, but it won’t feel out of the ordinary.

Early commenters are absolutely right in saying we don't drive on the strip if we can help it. However, you mentioned residents getting to see the race. Oh yeah, I wanted to see that race. I thought that even with the dedicated grandstands and the suites with a view there would still be some sort of general admission for residents, or a spot you could get to and see part of the race. You know, someplace that wouldn't cost as much as my yearly income (retired). So far - no such thing. As a resident, this is for the tourists, and I'll have to watch on TV. So that might actually cause some unhappiness among residents, but we're also pretty used to it. I do wonder where they're going to corral the few thousand homeless who sleep in that area. There's another side to this as well that is rarely talked about and that is the survival of purpose built circuits.
I'm from the UK and it is no secret that Silverstone, our most well known track and the host of the first ever F1 race, struggles financially. I have visited regularly throughout my life time, and even in the heydays of GT1, the crowd was nowhere near the size that it is for the F1 GP. Most other events have a fraction of the amount of spectators that F1 brings and even the next biggest events have significantly less fans in attendance.
Then there's the cost of maintaining and updating an FIA grade 1 circuit.
The revenue F1 generates is vital for these circuits survival and frankly it is lucky that the UK has such a strong motorsports community which brings such variety it is capable of generating consistent events nationwide which just isn't possible in some other countries, and still some circuits don't survive. RIP Rockingham 😞

As Vegas born and raised, and a car enthusiast in general, I'm super stoked about this. Yes, the overall road blockages hamper people who work at the casinos, but there's several events throughout the year that force the Strip to be closed down. Several construction projects have been put in place to accommodate the traffic, but it also means huge economic opportunities for the Vegas economy. Knowing November weather, there shouldn't be any heat issues at all for a night race. Most locals drive perpendicular through the Strip to go East or West of the city, but there's other options available. My main concern is how boring of a track it'd be.

As one who goes to Vegas once a year for edc that’s not the main road for locals so it’s really not a big deal and it wouldn’t be the first time they’ve Shut down roads for events. They do it every year and plus this is the closest event we will get as a real life forza horizon festival since insomniac is helping to host it. It’s gonna be sick!

If you take into consideration that sochi (Russia) was already cut this year than las Vegas will eventually replace it next year leaving the calendar at 23 races. Mexico could be extended just for having Sergio Perez in redbull and there's also talks about doing a Gran Prix in Guadalajara (were Checo is from) or Cancún in the Riviera maya

I'd like to see F1 at Watkins Glen again, or Road America, but neither of those is in a major metro area. I'd love to see them (and Indycar) on the Roval at Charlotte Motor Speedway. That's a unique format and I think it would be interesting to see how those cars handle the transitions into and out of the high banks.

@@thebigphilbowski "Some work" is underselling it. It is by far the single gnarliest track in North America, with fast and sweeping turns all over the place and little runoff area to speak of for many of them. Those distinctive baby blue guardrails are literally less than a foot from the racing surface in places. Heck, Watkins Glen got cut from the F1 schedule in the first place because it was considered too dangerous even back in the 1970's!!! Francois Cevert - who was the protege of safety crusader and 3-time champ Jackie Stewart - lost his life there in 1973 because the curb on the left side of the road in the Esses is basically a step which launched his car into the guardrail.....which promptly *_split his body in half._*
F1 will never return to Watkins Glen. That I am sure of. It is one of my favorite racing circuits in the world and it is a thrill to nail a lap there in a sim, but F1 at that track is a risky proposition. Even taking into account the safety advances in the cars and cockpits, the violent nature of the accidents there even in GT cars would probably put off F1's drivers, no matter how safe their lives and bodies would be. Ditto for Road America, whose kink has a concrete wall to its immediate left. Slamming that at full speed has been known to send even GT4 cars tumbling end over end. There was an IMSA Sportscar Challenge race where one car _literally _*_caught fire_* after pummeling that wall.
Both of these circuits are excellent to whip a car around, but without erasing much of their character, I don't see F1 making a run at them. Ever. Sorry for the drawn-out response.

      Absolutly spot on!
You could pay a couple thousand on a single F1 race weekend in vegas.
But i bought my Indy 500 tickets, the full GMR grand prix weekend tickets, parking, Bronze badge for gate entry all days in may.
All for $600.... and with that you can actually see the drivers, talk to them, get autographs, walk through the garage, see all the cars up close, pretty much go anywhere except on the track all for that price.
Shit most indycar races will only set you back probably a couple hundred for everything you need for the weekend.
      $200-$400 range
      better racing - cheaper price
F1 unfortunately is priced too high for most real fans to attend the races. It's more for the bourgeoisie. Celebrities, people with status, or enough money where spending thousands on the race won't effect them in the slightest

The grand prix on the road course in may was the first indycar race i have ever attended and it was great experience all around. plus i will be at the indy 500 The facility's at the indy have been recently upgraded by Penske. There are huge full color screens everywhere so no matter where you are seated you can watch the action on nbc's peacock broadcast. Ample bathrooms in all areas. amazing facility all around.
drivers that were hanging out in the garage: montoya, dixon, kanan, sato, o'ward, newgarden. veekay, pretty much every rookie. they stop for autographs and photos for about 5 to 10 minutes if they aren't going out in the car anytime soon
when cars go back and forth to the garage the teams let you literally stand right next to the cars and take all the pictures you want as long as you are not in their direct path for the car
they have a lot of small slits in the safety fencing around the spectator mounds that fans can use to take up close pictures
everyone should experience it once all the fans make the place have a buzz with energy and excitement.
when a good lap is put down you can hear all the cheers from the grandstands

Vegas local here. The Strip is shut down for multiple events during the year; NYE, Rock and Roll Marathon, NHL VGK Stanley Cup Parade, WNBA parade, NFL Draft. Granted those are typically one day events and not three days like F1 but the city functions with closures. The real issue is the insane ticket prices. As a local I want to be there near The Strip section but in all honestly, my F1 TV pass in the comfort of my home is much more appealing.

Couple weird things wrong here. Miami is not a street circuit. It is very much so, a purpose built racetrack. f1 doesn't care about locals in the cities they race, they never ever have. Even more, the Vegas strip gets shut down multiple times a year. why is one weekend causing such an uproar? I think we'll lose Paul Ricard for sure though. It is as boring as Monaco, without the notoriety or driver challenge.

so this year we have 22 races with russia axed. the Concorde agreement signed by f1 and the 10 teams say that 24 races are the maximum until 2025. with china and qatar being added back next year one track is obliged to go. in my opinion it is the french gp. monaco is going to be on next year, the organisers say. Spa is probably staying as it is historic and would receive massive backlash if removed. red bull ring is obviously going to stay and Mexico pays a health amount of money anyway and is government funded. the french gp is probably not going to stay as we have not had a french gp for a while and the racing was only good because of strategy battle and a title fight. also infrastructure is not there either
