- Watch me do a 5:54.7 2k rowing machine test while viewing my heart rate data, my splits and hearing thoughts that were going through my head during the 2k itself. Enjoy!
Today was another opportunity to test out some 2k strategies. Narrowing in now and good to see what changes can still be made! Great to get another 2k row on the rowing machine under the belt. Sometimes the 2k can be a mental barrier and can build up extra tension just through mentioning the workout! Doing them multiple times, if recovery is good enough, can help get over this!

DRAG FACTOR/RESISTANCE used on this workout.
I set the drag factor to 125. Around a 3-4 on this machine. Resistance does NOT equal faster or slower speeds. I've made a few videos discussing drag factor which I recommended checking out. Here is one: ruclips.net/video/_ZbxsslM6NQ/видео.html
If you have any other questions let me know!
Thanks for the info. I've achieved 7:55 for a 2K on drag factor 10. I weighed 75KG at the time. In your opinion is this a good effort? Thanks.
@@stevenc6492 like I've said in the video linked in the comment. The drag factor won't really make you slower or faster.
If you went hard and felt tired that's a good score 👍 hard question to ask specifically not knowing anything else!
@@CameronBuchan Thanks. Ok understood. I'm not a rower by any means. I just added rowing to my strength workout x2 per week. All the best with your rowing pursuits.
Sorry… just seen this
Hi, how many watts per stroke are you at here & how many strokes per minute on average please?
Making it look effortless 👌
Why does this stress me out like it's my turn next😂
Hahaha
Given the amount of fiddling around you did with the monitor, your earpiece etc., I reckon there must be more to come!
That's the idea!! 🤞 #yamsquad
I've rowed on ERGs for a decade, 6:40PR, but never seen a sub 6 in my life.. until today. Thanks for sharing
You're welcome! Hope you enjoyed! #yamsquad
It's easier to do it if you are a giant like him. He is 209 cm, so he's strokes are 25-30 cm longer than regular people have. Tall people benefit from height in most of sports.
@@ricotico5950 being tall definitely has its benefits. Still working on getting that 30cm extra gain in length at high rate though!
@@ricotico5950 not crossfit
@@CameronBuchan Also, there is lightweight and heavyweight categories for good reason when the ergo is concerned.
when his heart-rate during a 2k is yours during steady state...
Make sure your HR is in the right zone for your steady state!! #yamsquad
Thought the same. I know you should watch out for the heart rate zones, but I don't feel like I'm doing much without it going into the 175-180 in the last 5 minutes.
I swear my steady state is 190 tho😂
@@nuri5095 Must be wild have a 260 HRmax ;)
Where is his hr?
Just did a 2k last week and did 7:03, down from 7.49 at the start of the season. I'm 16 so hopefully I can go sub 7 next year! Your videos are a big motivation.
you got this
Did you go Sub 7 ???? Let us know and all the best.
im a junior in high school with a 2k pr of 6:53, its pretty recent too, and i collapsed afterwards. and u pulled a sub 6 and just WALKED AWAY. i could never 😂😂😂
Very happy to finally find a sub 6 minute video with commentary, screen capture and in a perfect quality. Awesome job. I can't comprehend how you can be below 150 bpm almost midway through, that's just unreal. Amazing result, if you took it to 190-200 bpm, you'd shave another 10 seconds off if this for sure.
Thanks Jozef! I think the graph is a slight bit out before the k, not by too much though! Definitely right with getting the push with extra 10 or so beats at the end!
This is by far the best 2K TT video out there, the addition of the erg data and heart rate and the running commentary is just what we need to see for comparisons. Thanks Cameron. I race in the 50+ age group, I'm giving Paris a miss, but hoping to go to the next Worlds.
Thanks John! I enjoyed making this one! #yamsquad
this man just gets up and walks away after a 2k. i sit there and die for 5 mins before thinking of getting up
Last 2k I did, I unstrapped my feet, fell on the floor. Stayed there for quite some time.
This was surprisingly insightful. I'm going to do some stroke counting from now on and set some distance milestones as well to help with the mental game.
The mental game is huge! Good luck! #yamsquad
i find it funny that he was listening to a disney soundtrack while ripping a 1:30 split
Late to the party on this, but holy smokes that stroke rate -- easily pulling 35-40 s/m almost hitting 60 s/m in the last 200m. Those are skierg numbers for most of us mere mortals! Great 2K!
Well anyone can do the stroke rate! 😂 It's funny this one is more popular than the faster ergs,
That split is insane
Excellent video! Inspired by your efforts, I did a 2k and set a new PB of 7:27 (previously 7:38).
Great work!! That's a huge PB!! #yamsquad
Massive massive massive!
Huge cingratulations!
Very soon you Will be at 1:27 for sure.
This year you can get number at 1:26, I have 100% confidence in that.
Your arms are really better, That's the best I ve seen you rowing so far. Tokio isn't impossible.
Keep striving, 2024 is your's if you keep like this.
Cingratulations Cam
Thank you!! #yamsquad
This guy is a beast, I started rowing at age 50 and have a 2K PR of 6:59 which I thought was pretty good in that it was very competitive with most college rowers.
Great effort. What I find most encouraging for you is that although you worked very hard, you were not falling off the machine at the end so definitely more to come. Good Luck!
Agreed! Still more in the tank! Good sign for Paris! #yamsquad
Really liked the way you filmed, the description plus the data ! awesome performance Cam and keep up the great work !
Thanks Marc! I enjoyed making this one!
Great to hear what rattles through your head during a 2k. I do the same 10 stroke counting, but it seems to go on forever! Tried 20 but kept losing count around 14.LOL. Thanks for sharing!
I think this is one of your best vlogs to date (and I never thought I would say that about a video without Yam!). The enhanced stats are great, as is the voice over. Great ideas from MrBoggins too! I watch a few doggy vlogs and most appear to have an Amazon list so people can send pressies for their dogs on birthdays, Xmas or just when they want - might be an idea?? (They also have stuff on them for enhancing the video-making experience - you might be surprised at how generous people are with this sort of thing.)
Thanks Tony! That's an interesting one! I didn't even know about that, could you send some examples to me please? Over to contact@yamsquad.com 🙏
Pff, I can hold that split too (for 250m)
Me too, perhaps 500/600 m...Getting there tho :D
Machine! In screen erg data + HR Speedo (cool) + commentary / tips + the whole piece end to end + awesome picture quality + fiddlin' with monitor & headhones - vomiting = ♠️ A single vlog with your pal Adam Neill in it has over 576k views on a channel with only 211 subscribers, with the title "Adam Neill 2Km ERG 5:48" maybe a similar title tweak, for you, could boost views and subs, for what is a far superior vlog? 🤞
I liked this one for sure! I know the video, once we get to those speeds I think we can do that. I would have though last week's 2k would be good too but unfortunately didn't push as far as I thought. Guess I need sub 550! What do you think?
@@CameronBuchan you might be right Cam, no harm in trying SEO title tweaks using anothers successful title template as a guide and then reviewing it? Suggest... "Cameron Buchan" or "Yam squad" and "ERG" are both missing, "2Km" is typed as 2k in the earlier 5:56 vid title. It might also be differences in the chosen fields in the RUclips uploader or web traffic pouring in to a RUclips link. Marginal gains 🤞 Today's vid similar... Cameron Buchan (or Yam squad) 5:54 ERG 2Km - Real Time Tips This latest vid is next level and deserves a much bigger audience.
I really need someone else to help with the titles! 😂 Great suggestion. Let's change it to what you suggested and see if it helps this time!

This is totally amazing - recommended this video by RUclips when watching a different rowing video and what do I see? Bath! That's where I learnt to row with the Uni! Totally amazing 2k! I did my best ever 2k just over 3 years ago on one of those ergs next to you of 6:49, just 6-7 months into rowing. Would love to improve that over lockdown. All the best Cameron! Will sub and follow on IG!
Thanks for posting. Great time. It's been helpful to compare my form to yours. I like how you put the app on the screen too. You have a huge stroke at 1.48. Mine only averages about 1.33. You've inspired me to try for a new PR in the 2k. Soon...
Good luck! You can do it! #yamsquad
Love it Cam :) Wondering if you could answer a question that we have debate on in our club at the moment: say you row a 6:23.9 2km, as a rower would we say It's a 6:23 or a 6:24; ie do you round it up or down? Keen to hear you and your fellow rowers comments
What I've always seen, heard, and done myself is if you're like you used, 623.9. You're a 623. No rounding up ever! 😂
Amazing consistency
That was intense. It's always intense.
Adding the screen and heart rate counter I think added this time!

To think that's not actually how fast he could've gone because of having to touch the screen in that second 500
Good sign for Paris! #yamsquad
Just curious about your thoughts on how much you shorten your stroke at the end. Although the rate gets pushed up quite high which lets you get your splits down for a short period, do you think that there might be merit in keeping it longer and letting your legs still take the majority of the drive through the end of the piece at a lower rate and using the "final kick" energy to ultimately push it even lower? Or do you think that the trade off of drive length for higher rate is ultimately of greater value? I wonder because on the water you often see the crews that stay long seem to maintain greater speed. I am not saying your way is wrong, because I know that ergs and rowing are different beasts to an extent, rather I am just curious if you have tried both ways and found one to be more effective at getting the faster score. By the way, that is a GREAT score... you are beast mode!
I think you answered your own question really. The rate goes high and split goes down for a short period. The short period being the main part. When the rate gets pushed higher and higher, the split drops down and I can't hold those for long! I also can't hold full length in the high 30s for long.... Yet! So yes I think, for me right now, the tradeoff is worth it
Like a boss. Fantastic.
Instead of pressing the "display" button repeatedly. You can press the buttons in the row to the right to get directly to the desired view!
You're right but I wasn't trying to change the screen I was changing units!
@@CameronBuchan You lost at least 1 sec to do that process! So u have 5,53 already there ;)
@@pelleakesson2993 good news for the next one then!!
I feel like you could go sub 5:40 if you didn’t have to play with cameras, machine settings and air pods all while taking a 2k test lol. Great work!
I don't think you understand what a 540 vs 554 is. The changing songs and settings didn't slow me down nor putting a camera next to me. Even if it did, its not going to suddenly give me almost 4 splits
@@CameronBuchan obviously I’m being sarcastic. I can’t get over how you can multitask and still break 6’ on a 2k. Best of luck training! Really enjoy the videos.
Well done 👏 ...
This makes it look so incredibly easy
Didn't feel easy!
@@CameronBuchan would you recommend this for a 2k?- 1st 500- Target split. 2nd 500- +.02 3rd 500 target split. 4th 500 at -.02 split?
@@jackhalverson1201 if that's what works for you then yes
Very nice job I have question for you when I do 2k test my knees hurt me what I can do for this problem.lol😂
That's unfortunate! Could be a few reasons so I'm not really sure what would help. Could be technique could be an injury. I'm not sure
im not sure if theres a reason, but he was taking almost just arms and body strokes at the end, and overall his sequencing seemed not too good, but he still did amazingly..
I was sprinting towards the end which usually makes people shorten up.
Sequencing could need some work but not super necessary on the erg unless doing something really inefficient
@@CameronBuchan Ye ofc! no hate at all you're incredible i just noticed that. I like keeping my erg technique good so it carries through to water training but ig it dosent rlly matter. Edit: i made that comment a year ago and i wanna apologise because you're actually insane and im not sure what i was thinking commenting on something like that and the commentary and everything on this is so useful

Mad erg Cam, congrats. Any updates on the Yamsquad AIO's?

Good! Could you have pushed more though? The HR didnt peak as I expect it would for your age range.
Not really on this one. Trying different strategy and first one in a while. Plus given such a short time hitting max HR generally doesn't happen on a 2k, although was only a few off
Great idea how it was presented THANK YOU! I'm brand new to my Concept 2 and rowing finding motivation everywhere through the rowing/erging community (just in time for the "stay home quarantine" ) What about "How Far I'll Go" made that the right song for your effort?
Thanks for watching! Good timing indeed! Just a song I like, wasn't quite the original either!
Do you ever do a piece without looking at the split? Best 2k I ever pulled was when the split was taped over. Without that split telling me how bad I should feel I was just racing against my fear of doing "worse" and found I had more than I had been accessing. Taught me just how mental it really can be. Maybe it's only effective once, but I'd be curious to know how common it is to do better when you don't know your status within the piece.
I haven't actually done this before but I actually really want to. At the very least it would be an interesting experience!!
In his book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", Pirsig describes how Phaedrus, whilst teaching creative and technical writing at a college in Montana, did a little experiment where he withheld assignment grades from his students during the term so they had no idea how well or poorly they were doing. The results were much the same as what you described with your rowing. That is, by the end of the term, those students were going to pass did so with far better scores than they would have had they known what their grades were. At the end of the term, Phaedrus asked them how they found this system and their response was that, once they got used to it, they became more interested in the subject matter. Another quote from them was:
"A lot of us got together outside of class to try to figure out how to beat this system. Everyone decided the best way was just to figure you were going to fail and then go ahead and do what you could anyway. Then you start to relax. Otherwise you go out of your mind!"
Did my first 2K in years today and finished at 13:11. I wanna try getting down to 8 minutes as a goal for now.
Well done and good luck!!
Just turned 14 and just got a 151 2k split?
Is this any good?
Cool and collected. Very nice
Makes it look easy
Whats the reason for the half strokes at the end? Great rowing btw.
I'm sprinting
That is insane!
Hi, Cameron - amazing performance. I only row on Erg and mostly long distances. My pb is 6:56 - what is your recommendation of the setting for the resistance? I set it to 10 but I have no idea what the norm is.
I always have it set at 4-5 because it best simulates the resistance of water.
Impressive!
Seeing everyone replying on your heart rate while I am thinking: "how tall are you?" your stroke length is regularly up the 1.50 with hardly moving your legs. That's a lot of meters on 200 strokes if I compare it to my 1.30 ish stroke length. What settings is the concept on?
What part of a 2k do you find the hardest? The lack of oxygen? The burning in the legs? I’d imagine for you it’d be the lactate in the legs but it’s still interesting to see.
I think the worst part of the 2k is post 2k. When I have done my PBs I'm out of it for an hour at least and feel horrible for the rest of the day!
I've only managed a 7:58 with no footstraps. Jeez 5:54!!! INSANE!!
Good effort
why do you say 'and for you frank' and then show your erg screen because that really freaked me out
Wanted to make sure you were paying attention! #yamsquad
Is there any particular (strategic reason) that you shorten your slide towards the end (other than just fatigue)
I go faster but its not sustainable
is it the strength of your legs that allows you to do this or the length of your legs....
I know guys much shorter than me that go much faster!
Would it help to catch with hands higher? It looks like your chain is on a different angle to your arms at the catch.
I've been on people at the local club for it; the starting slack seems to lead to arm bend.
Yeah the starting slack is a cause of the arm bend. Raising the hands does help combat that but ends up in an unnatural position. Maybe not for all but just an unfortunate result of the machine not being very adjustable
I did a 6:25. I'm 61 years old. Dudes half my age are impressed with that.
85 years old and did a 5:59 so I got ya beat young whippersnapper. Keep your head up though, you got a ways to go before you catch me
That was an insane negative split...
Sometimes you just have to warm up on the first half! 😂
Hi Cam, i noticed you are rowing alone/away from the British Rowing set-up, are you not on the squad anymore?
Hi David! Just to make sure, I have not been on the GB squad since I got ill in 2018, just before the vlogs started! I made a video at the start of the year talking about why I'm not training at Leander right now
How did you just go sub 6 and you’re barely out of breath? I’ve been rowing for 5 years and I just can’t comprehend that. How’d the higher rate compare to the lower rate because I have a 2k test coming up.
I wasn't really barely out of breath. It was pretty tough. Could have went faster but not by too much as demonstrated by next few 2ks.
I had been working on training the higher rate and adjusted my technique to work better with the higher rate so it was helping me. That doesn't mean it will work for you though.
Hi Cameron, awesome video! What’s your damper setting typically at? I’m playing around with my pr, but man, that stroke rate at the end was insane!
I explain it in the pinned comment 👍
Best Prep for a 2K is to do a 3K mate. But they is my opinion 😃
Interesting choice!
Is he not bending his arms too early, meaning before they are past his knees? Or is that acceptable at stroke rates this high?
Something I'm working on. The arm bend isn't so much a bend to pull as apposed a bend to engage.
A 40 spm is the highest rating I can get and that's just on the first ten strokes of a 2k 😫
Apologies if this was mentioned, but what was the drag factor setting, please?
how is brotha able to walk after that.
Just experimenting with it! 😂
Should I be worried that my heart rate is 224 during my 2k?
Hi Cameron, have just stumbled upon you're videos. very impressive and insightful. wondering what damper setting you have when doing the erg test?
Hi Paul. I'm pretty sure the pinned comment explains for you!
Hey, just intrigued with the technique at higher rates, you seem to not go to full slide, more like 1/4 or 1/2 sometimes, do you find that helps conserve energy ?
It definitely does help use less energy, feel a lot more in the lungs, as my leg strength was my weakness! #yamsquad
What kind of damper settings is better to row a 2k ? Usually I use a 5.5 but I'm lower than 140 drag factor, it's about 125, 130 for a PB 7:15" I wish to reach sub-7. Very inspiring your vidéos, thank you so much
On every erg a 5 or a 6 is different depending on how they've been maintained. I have been messing with drag factor over the passed few weeks and have settled right now on around 130. You can get sub 7! #yamsquad
What type of shoes ? Brand ? Why ? Thanks Al.
Hi Al. I make a video talking about the shoes that should answer your questions
is that sean bowden ?
It is not. Some guys from the club were in and wanted to watch
Thanks for the Vlog. what damper setting were you at?
I think it was around 130!
how doyou downlaod the splits
