- Kenya is a traditionally patriarchal land. With one exception: Right in the heart of the country lies the village of Umoja. Here, women are in charge.
Men have no access to Umoja. The village, which is located in Samburu County, is an oasis for women. Umoja means "connectedness" in Swahili; most of the 50 or so women living here are experiencing this feeling for the first time in their lives. They founded their village because they were abused by men. They fled from forced marriage or genital mutilation. They no longer wanted to accept that being a woman among the Samburu means having no choice.
Because here, the man rules over the family. He owns the land, he eats first, he is allowed to marry several women and beat them. Rebecca Lolosoli was fed up with all this. She founded Umoja in 1990 with Jane Leng'ope. At the time, the two did not know whether they would survive on their own. Today, the village is a functioning cooperative. The women's pride and joy is the Umoja school. Their greatest hope is the next generation: the children learn about their rights and that respect and solidarity are the most valuable social assets. Every year, Umoja also enables a handful of girls from outside the village to attend school. It's a barter deal: the child receives free lessons and food. In return, the father undertakes not to marry his daughter off early or to circumcise her. Both are officially forbidden in Kenya but are still practiced among the Samburu. Six-year-old Samella is to get the last spot in the school. But will her father agree to the conditions?

The young boys raised in this village will go on to change how men treat women because they see and will learn to respect the woman in their life.
How long are the boy children allowed to stay. If there are no men allowed, how old is a boy child before he's considered a man?

Women have recognized how dangerous men can be long before the "4B" movement became popular. People ask why I still haven't remarried over a decade since my divorce, and it's because I don't feel the need to tie myself legally and financially to a man ever again. A boyfriend who becomes abusive is much easier to escape than a husband who becomes abusive.
right so. Reason enough for my part to get rid of all the marriage business. You find a partner for life? Splendid. You dont? No harm done either.
Never Again!
men are not dangerous don't forget that there are some domestic violence perptrated by women on men. there are some cultural practices that make some men think that a wive is a property that you can own. practices like paying of bridge price is what feminists should be fighting against.
Some men comments prove that misogyny never going to end never going to accept women sufferings.

Umoja Village of Kenya 🇰🇪 was founded in 1990 by Rebecca Lolosoli as a sanctuary for women fleeing gender-based violence, including domestic abuse, female genital mutilation (FGM), and forced marriages. It is located in the Samburu County of northern Kenya.
It is important to note that young girls are forced into those arranged marriages. A real tragedy 😢 💔
Except it’s not “gender”, it’s sex based
Do they take volunteers? I'd be happy to go do hard labour and help them build. Such beautiful souls. ❤
@UbuntuNamuhla yes they do
Great initiative. . That being said in today's times such attrocities should not even exist. The world over predominantly women are still subjected to all kinds of violence. In some cultures worse than other. TRUTH BE TOLD IF GOVERNMENTS WERE SERIOUS ABOUT THIS ISSUE IT COULD HAVE BEEN ROOTED OUT AGES AGO. My cousin, sister died in 2022. Because, she went back to an abusive marriage which eventually led to her untimely death. She passed, away leaving three little kids who are now without a mother's love and healing. She was in her mid 30's when she died. I miss her so much. I wish, she left the marriage and stayed alive for those who love her. Rest in power Victoria. I pray the Universe gives you justice.
Children deserve to see their mothers smiling. It's sad that a lot of men don't consider how important this is.
I think some men feel too threatened by happy women to be able to recognize the importance. 😞Feeling threatened blinds them to the needs of their children, their community, their wives. When you feel insecure, vulnerable, threatened, as a man, it is hard to think about anyone’s needs but your own.

@@USER06584Bthis idea always makes me think of that scene where Rick is telling the tiny robot his purpose is to serve him butter. If women were solely meant to have children and raise them, there would be no infertile women, and there would be no bad mothers. Reality shows us this simply can't be true, as there are plenty of both.

Whoever said women cannot stay in peace among each other was very wrong and should see a real depiction of women coming together an uniting for a common greater good. Aint this just amazing??😍❤❤❤
It really is amazing. These women are just incredible
What they have built is just wonderful! Their stories are equal parts heartbreaking and inspiring, and I hope that their example will be a force for change.
We need communities like this to exist everywhere such a brilliant idea
they do, they are those sheltered beds for victims of domestic abuse. but these are temporary solutions. we need more choice and protections and checks against abuse. and we need solutions that get to the core of the problem, shelters are emergency solutions, they arent built to satisfy all the needs and aspirations of people.
These sorts of communities shouldn’t have to exist. But you are right, unfortunately there is a need.
There are a group of older women who purchased a house and renovated to support communal living for when they become a widow or divorced. It seems there are pockets of these ideas creeping out and the 4B movement just took it another level of basically choosing to be single and celibate.
@@USER06584BNo, not just temporary emergency shelters. We need communities of women living together everywhere.
AMEN!
I think it’s also wonderful that the boys being raised in this community of women will grow up learning to respect them..and no longer be raised to treat them as property❤️
Made me giggle when the women threw shade at the men constantly sitting in the shade while they did all the work..lol..they have truly earned their independence ☺️
and that's true. I've work several weeks in this area, the men were sitting under a tree drinking banana liquor while the women did all the work with a kid on their back. A male student in economy told me if the men in his country would all work as much as the women, his country would be the richest in Africa instead of being amongst the poorest. So yeah, the women loose nothing by moving out. The men are the ones who have everything to loose.
@kifi672 right that's y they are so against it
I giggled too. It is inevitable that the worker throws shade at those watching from the shade. If only they would sit in the sun and share the heat, the work would be much more bearable.
Noone should suffer physical or sexual abuse. What amazing strong courageous women. I admire their spirit. I hope they prosper and continue to be safe in their community. Never underestimate women. We are warriors!❤❤❤
Yeah unfortunately I relate to the circumcision part. A piece of me is gone, and while it's a somewhat unimportant piece, it's more the fact that I was just an object to be modified, did it to me as a baby so I couldn't say no or even get to understand what I lost before it was taken.
I live with my mother after many years of living with men who have big needs. I have never had such a peaceful life before. We always talk about how lucky we feel. I love that these women are finding freedom to be themselves and to support each other.
I'm glad these ladies have this place. They are teaching their children it's not okay to abuse others.

My Sister dies of domestic abuse. The word “domestic abuse was not in our vocabulary. We normalised abuse. And others said in my village that we have to accept our condition because Men are born to kill. A woman say they are just like that. So deal with it: meaning die😢
I said I don’t want to be killed. And left the village. And see that the other part of the world has evolved in protecting women right of choosing life instead of death 💀
So, it's like a huge domestic violence shelter turned into a village. That's nice. The women are able to continue their lives without fear and with the support of a community. It'd be nice if they did something similar in Western countries, where instead of just a small shelter they turned say an entire apartment complex into a DV community. A place where women could get free or discounted apartments until they're able to get on their feet and find a safe place to live, where they could have security and community. Great idea!
Are the females going to stop the men? I think not 😂
Wouldn't that fall under the umbrella of what would be offered if there were public housing?
Girls are sold in Southeast Asia, too, by their poor families.
@@Alaskan-Armadillo No, public housing is usually available to both sexes and men are certainly not prevented from entering. An apartment complex set up strictly for DV victims would be open to women and children in danger only, no men would be allowed on the property and there could be security to make sure those rules were enforced. It wouldn't even be open to low income women, only victims of DV.
@@bmorg5190 Thus why I said they could have security. They could have it gated off and have armed security at the gate and entrances as well as patroling the property.

I dont understand their culture's obsession with mutilating a girl's private parts. There is no medical need for it, especially not for every girl. I realize that it is an islamic thing, but the unnecessary cruelty of it is so horrible.

It was an amazing relief that not only did the father agree, but he showed real concern about the health of the girls being circumcised and wanted his daughter to get an education because he never even had the chance. I'm very hopeful for that little girl and I'm proud her father didn't cave to the pressure of the other men in the village (hoping it stays that way and he keeps to the contract). We don’t even have this in America Amazing strong women ❤ sadly this shows the true nature of men!
We have it, but we're continually bullied and marginalized by men for building up. Hence the hate men have for successful women.
We have good men too❤ we need to raise our precious little boys to be gentle and protective. Christ showed what a true man is like. Not a warring king as the ppl of that time expected, but a gentle and great man, one that put children first and sent the Samaritan woman out to teach her whole nation of the truth of God. Mary was the first to witness the resurrection of Christ even when a woman’s witness at that time was counted for naught.
Our Heavenly Mother is great indeed and sent her son to show us a man’s true potential. Both our Father and Mother in heaven are gentle and great, this life is so short for us to choose what we will, how much they want all of their children to repent and return to them.
My eyes are teary watching this. We take so much for granted.
