I purchased this entire set up for my wife’s Salsa Cutthroat and mine. It is the most comfortable set up for any long distance bike. We did the seat post as well very excited about our divide ride! Thank You for all the help you channel has given us!!!

Great review - never has so much been packed into 12:53 😂 subscribed. I am about to fit the 50cm kitchen sink and was wondering if I’d gone too wide, so it was a relief to hear you say you wish you’d gone wider. I’m quite broad in the chest so I’m hoping it will suit me.

For now, I will stay with my mustache hb's. Have ridden 10k of our 15k fully loaded touring miles with 'em. Not perfect, but paid for. Swear by Cinelli bar tape. Thanks for the review.

I've also used Ergon grips on some of my flat bar bikes (and loved them)! I use doubled grip tape, but the top grip option from Redshift will eliminate that need AND perform even better!

Great review. First place I’ve seen the kitchen sink with aero bars, loop and bag. Kudos for your thoroughness! Would love to see Redshift integrate a Fred bar type solution into their stem for aero bars behind / off of the handlebars.

I was sold on the idea but the sizing is bonkers.
My gf recently went through a bikefit and was prescribed with 36cm bars to fit her physique.
How is she suppose to fit on these, when the narrowest is 44cm? Unfortunately other manufacturers are no better at this. :/
Ya, I don’t know of any gravel/adventure bars that come in a 36… bummer :(
I'm curious about the kitchen sink bars. I saw in another comment that you are 5'9" but how long are your hands? How wide are your palms? Do you get a nice platform to support your hands when riding the hoods?
I wear a size large glove, and the top grips offer a platform similar to the Ergon gs grips I use on flat bars…

I was thinking it is probably not totally necessary to wrap the loop out front if you wanted to use normal bar tape. Especially if you are using cruise control drops, since you aren't wrapping all the way down.

Can you explain why you would go with the 50 vs the 47? Going from 44 to 50 seems like alot!

Love this review. I’ve ordered the stem, post, bars, etc. just awaiting getting it installed hopefully next week once all the parts are here. I’ve been struggling with a mild case of tennis elbow this summer and am hoping that these changes might help 🤞

I agree on the proper aero bar versus the loop. I still like the old-school profile century bars because they are one continuous sloop, so I can mount whatever (lights, bells, etc...) while still enjoying the aero. plus, the base for whatever reason acts as a perfect mount for a dry bag with two thick straps. so my sleep system is perfectly and securely anchored. I don't think you're gonna get all that and an optimal aero position with the loop.

Another great review. I like the idea of the suspension stem as it is cheaper and lighter than suspension forks. The new grips for the drops look like they would work for me on regular drop bars. I've always had an issue with numb palms in the drops. I'll stick with regular clip on aero bars with pads, I prefer comfort.

I too have the original shock stop stem. It is not comparable to a suspension fork as the range of motion is small. It does a great job taking the shock out of riding on all kinds of terrain . I found it is most helpful with rocks and beat up city streets.
Dude that was super comprehensive on detail and real life experience. Bling? Nah. I've just gone to Butterflies - I'm a tour guy, slow and go - looking at nature comes before conquering. (I got my kicks in the military) now it's all cream - except no cream as my health doesn't allow. At 60 I'm still going I'm currently planning and training for Edinburgh to Athens. (You sound a bit like "Jay" - Jason Mewes - Dogma styli).

I got the stem and the tape for my gravel bike and it was the best thing I have ever done! Definitely took the extra vibration out off my hands and made longer rides more enjoyable,👍😀🚴🏻♂️ Like always thanks for the great vid!

Looks great, but its pretty heavy. I use and love the Ritchie venture max, and thinking about trying the Farr carbon aero bolt on v3. looks similar, but only 98 gms, and they have an alloy version at 133 gms.

To me the handlebar grips look bulky and you already have the stem which will give you lots of comfort. Will get it for my wife and will wrap her salsa bar with the Wolftooth Supple Bar Tape (the fat one). I think with those three pieces she'll be pleased.

Hey! I own a pair of redshift bars and I seen these parts are more gravel based but I was wondering if u think the stem would be a good fit for a fixed gear bike?
Hi Shiro, great question - if you're always riding pavement on your fixie, I don't think the stem is worth it... but if you ride gravel and/or have issues with hand/wrist pain, you can't go wrong - thanks for watching and commenting, ride on!
Great timing and great review! I’m considering this bar option along with the Salsa cowchipper as well as the Ritchey Venturemax. I like the extra loop for bikepacking but agree that for normal riding, it probably is not the best. I was also wondering how effective the ergo grips would be, but it does sound like there is some benefit.
Can you tell me if carrying a handle bar roll interferes with the shock absorbing stem?

Hi Roger, thanks for watching and commenting :). Re: your question... if you have a really heavy handlebar bag, you night need to add/change out for a stiffer elastometer (easy to do) so the stem doesn't become too squishy- but if it's just a lightweight drybag like I was using, it's fine... and I never had any issues with the load keeping the stem from moving freely either... hope that helps... ps, here's a video dedicated to the original shockstop stem if you're curious: ruclips.net/video/4wMJTCdS8mw/видео.html
How do aero bars work with the ShockStop Pro Stem? Is is weird being in the aero bars with a moving stem?
My aerobars are attached to a Fred Bar, so separated from the movement of the stem - ride on!

Thanks for watching, Sam- for me it’s a combo of the hoop on the 47’s taking up a lot of real estate on the tops and the girth of the top grips being a little too much for my taste, once wrapped with thick tape…subjective, but for makes it a tight fit / cramped cockpit…especially if you consider using a feed bag, etc my friend has the grx sub brakes- he tested them on this setup and didn’t enjoy - switched to non-hoop version without top grips and went to the 50 width … much better for him… but who knows, this could work great for you- so I don’t want to tell ya what to do!! Best of luck on the build!!

I like the specific and specialist format. Expert details of items of kit. Helps make sure folks don’t start to buy crap. I have always tried to buy the toughest pieces of kit and though just starting in long distance bike travel the items on the channel are helpful. I always carry enough stuff to not look a chump and need any sort of rescue.
It would be good to see you using your kit in dire circumstances to see how it holds up for longevity as well as your safe comfort.

I like your channel, but I need to get out my quarterly rant about how cycling has created a “new” revenue stream, by creating a new category of cycling…THAT ALREADY EXISTED!!! IRONICALLY…YOU AND OTHERS ARE ADDING handlebar and seat “suspension” to bikes that don’t offer much comfort to the primary contact points of hands and seat…Cycling fixed that problem in Northern CA 40 years ago!!!…and called them MTBs…first just compliant tires…then seats…then front forks…then rear forked…OMG!!! Fully capable bikes for the mountains of the world and all other off-road destinations…EUREKA!!! “Mountain Bikes”!!!
Is “gravel” riding so intoxicating that we have to continue to stress so much about the “perfect” drop bar for off road riding? Do “Gravel” riders really need to stress over gram by gram weight variations? Tour de France level concern is being exhausted on this derivative of traditional MTB, on non-sponsored/non-competitive weekender bike rides!!! Only one small sector of “Gravel” riders can win the Dirty Kanza…AND THEY ARE ALL FORMER PROFESSIONAL CYCLISTS!!! Depending on where you live…CA for me…the topography of most off-road rides, starts with either driving to the trail head and taking your bike off the rack, or, if close enough, riding to the trail head to start the off road portion of the planned rides.
It is always the same story…The drop bar, no suspension fork, skinnier tire dudes, take off for the flat bit to get to the bottom of the hills, at break neck pace…and I admittedly am generally toward the back of that initial train. THEN…MIRACULOUSLY…as soon as we hit the slopes, my MTB masters all that the terrain has to offer, for the next several hours. I tend to always find myself sitting alone on a rock at each of the scheduled water stops, eating orange slices and rehydrating. I always have excess refreshment, because I never leave home for a ride without my trusty Osprey Talon 11 back pack, with the 2.5 liter water bladder, and room for the fruit slices, tools, cell phone with mobile charger and WiFi booster.
My basic hard tail, decade plus, old Trek flat bar MTB, with Ergo 4 grips and a front lockout suspension fork, and my extra 2 KG back pack….always seems to have no problem matching or exceeding the mechanical advantage sumitting the tops, ahead of my “gravel” riding buddies on several thousand dollar bikes. I guess the monetary investment into cycling is an overall good thing. I worry that neighborhood bike shops are going to fade away soon, and we’ll be buying “flat-bar-gravel-bikes” on Amazon. I spent 25 years in the Marines…don’t remember a substantive difference between “Dirt and Gravel”…mud and snow and sand, yes!!! Oh…we have solutions for such real problems in the USMC…we have USMC fatter tires, for mud snow and sand, kind of like we have for MTBs for mud snow and sand….
It would have been interesting to see the Marine in charge of the USMC motor pool, say, “Let’s put skinnier tires on the trucks and Hummers, and use aircraft style control sticks to steer, instead of proper steering wheels, and make that the new driving configuration for when we encounter “GRAVEl” roads!!!
We’ll just ignore that the USMC trucks and Hummers, with big fat all terrain military grade off road tires, can handle ALL TERRAIN!!!
Kind of like MTBs in the cycling world!!!

CONAN-FA18 You totally nailed it! The hardtail is the best way to ride any mountains and heavy degree runs. The synergy experienced by the rider with their bike is unfiltered input to the body allowing for better judgement on your focused line of descent. Similarly to driving a manual transmission vehicle rather than a slush box on mountain roads or even rush hour traffic, you’re forced to make calculated choices to maximize your traffic flow. Modifying a road bike with simple adjustments and add ons is fine, yet many weight weenies become lost and stray from the ultimate connection between the human body and the geometrics of their current ride. It’s like a sculpture within a block of marble, the artist releases the form from the mass of the inanimate block of stone. If your bike is ridden as you mentioned the rider will connect to its true nature and integrate with the bike for what it is as the bike will have no option but to inversely connect with their body and frame as well. Nothing to sap the energy from the process of moving through time and some may even agree space.
DIRTY T€€TH-MTB; I subscribed to your site as you’re informing riders of the many flaws of some mods on the market, particularly Amazon type product where it just takes a click from ones arm chair to receive the latest experiment with bike tech. Your honesty and integrity is highly appreciated as back to basics is always the path to go and you work hard exposing possible paths of no return. Thanks for your completely honest opinions, I have learned invaluable insight into contemporary tech flaws as well as some of the rare gems, like the first MTB bikes of the 80’s which broke the ground upon which we currently ride those which CONAN-FA18 referred to. Bravo to you both, taking it too another level!!
I like them , but too much money.My pockets only go 37 millimeters deep ,not deep enough for this stuff .They force you to get their stem if you wanna use these hoop bars.so your looking at over 500 bucks ,no friggin way
No they don't. You can use any standard 31.8 mm stem. The whole idea is that you can pick and choose which components you want, and they cost similar to anything offered by other major names.
As Jason said... you can use any stem you want. Ride on :)

Is the extra long tape necessary if you plan on using the 44 cm bar without the loop and neither the top nor bottom grips?
Sorry this comment slipped through the cracks, but no, I think you'll be fine with regular length tape with no loop or grips - ride on!
