Great job on the box, one thing I would recommend to you and others is when installing the weather stripping @ 9:48, you should place it on the lid, not the top of the box. This will help with accidentally damaging it when you go to put or take things out. I know this is a bit late but others who watch this for their own can benefit. Good job!
When seeing all the built that you made, it makes me more appreciative to all the work that goes in building a trailer that the manufacturing companies do. Thanks.
Buddy let me tell you, that to me was an amazing build! A Big box store buy can not replace having done something on your own! Yes, it may have flaws as with anything but, you know YOU made it and makes you appreciate it that much more. Great job!!!
MikeBramm thanks mike! Yes there definitely want one that would’ve fit my trailers front tongue angle...and definitely glad to have gone through the effort:)
Thanks! Yes the bending of aluminum is tricky. I can’t remember if this was 3031 or 6061 but one is the bendable type of aluminum and the other will break if bent too far. If you try this just make sure the diamond plate is the formable kind😀👍
DIY by Dino yes for sure! Definitely a little learning curve but I figure it’s just a difference of where the effort is. Aluminum is harder to weld but easier to cut and won’t rust...whereas steel is harder to cut but easier to weld...but will require paint or something to protect from elements😀
Awesome, I asked the question too, why not just buy one? But I can see the satisfaction from DIY and the experience gained. I can now appreciate the seemingly high cost of a manufactured box. Overall, you can be proud of the accomplishment! Thanks for sharing.
yes, that is one of the most often asked questions...haha... but yes, as you mentioned, it is something that I enjoy doing and wanted to do. sure, I could buy a used one... but then I would inherit someone else's leaks, problems, etc,. ... or by a new one and spend way more than this one. and lastly..... you wouldn't be able to watch the build series if I bought one ;) jk thanks for watching Byron :) Joe
Great build, Joe! It's well worth it b/c you learned a new skill, procured the needed equipment to perform that skill moving forward AND inspired others along the way. Education can be expensive, but here we all made out like bandits! Thanks again, @HoneyOnWales
I weld aluminum everyday mostly tig. With a spool gun use a push angle to keep the gas in front of the weld pool. You will get better welds and no black with the weld. Awesome job for your first time and love the channel.
Shad Orourke thanks Shad! I’m hoping to improve a Lot...haha...this was harder than I thought it would be but I can’t wait to do some more! And eventually I want to graduate to tig...but I think I’ll start out with some steel for that to get used to the two hand and foot pedal technique....I’m not super coordinated with those kinds of things....so a lot of practice will be needed😀👍
I know you made this video quite some time ago, and not sure if anyone else has given this recommendation. It appears your bolts go from the inside and the nuts are under the frame. For security's sake, I recommend installing the bolts from the outside and securing them with the nuts on the inside. This way no one can simply take off the nuts and make off with your toolbox. Additionally, the toolbox looks fantastic, and I think there is a lot to be said about self-satisfaction having created it yourself. Great job.
Great job Joe, looks like a very sturdy box. If you will be putting batteries in there and charging while the box is closed, might want think about venting since the gases need somewhere to go. Keep up the great work.
Great stuff Joe! I wouldn't be too bothered about the beginners (spool gun) welding. The fact is you have the courage (which most don't) to learn as you go. Having said that it turned out fantastic! Love your videos, keep them coming.
Man, that was a good vid. You learn something in every project it seems whether watching it or actually doing it. My buddy stops by my house at times to visit and he normally catches me doing something that's not excatly supposed to be possible or in a way that's not normal. He always says "who would think of that!!" Next time I'm just going to say "Joe would."....lol. Great ideas as usual.
Wayne Waldrep haha...but he’d probably be like ‘joe who?!”😂 And yes, I learn a lot by new projects...just doing the trial and error thing..and by tinkering and figuring with little things...haha...not efficient but works for me
Daniel Fisch thanks Daniel! I actually considered brazing those tight corners...but figured I just needed to power through on them with the welder. But I’ve seen lots of stuff with brazed aluminum and it ends up being plenty strong for most all uses
Great job Joe! Might want to insert an insulator strip between the steel frame and box. Any moisture that gets between the two metals will eventually cause a problem for you. A strip of rubber from a mud flap or even 1/2” thick wood would do.
Gee Dubb thanks! I actually have some rubber that you can see between the frame and the box when I’m setting it on the trailer near the end of the video. They are an orange reddish color. They are where the as bolts are mounted
So cool!! for sure I want to learn how to weld aluminum once we we finish the house and have more time!! Hope you use it on more projects so I can learn more..hehehe thanks for sharing!!
Odd Life Crafting thanks! Yes I will be for sure! And btw....love your build so far! Mostly been following on IG but watched a couple of the videos too! Top notch and love your design! Joe
Bruce A. Ulrich thanks Bruce! It was quite a learning experience...But I’m happy with the results...even if I did get a couple more grays during the process 😀
Not only interesting, that was a totally AWESOME build joe!!! For the first time building a battery/tool box and welding aluminum diamond plate, I would hafta say you are a very talented individual. GREAT JOB my friend!!! Take care and God Bless. ~Jay~.
Your follow through is amazing. Doing this many first time projects is a huge mental drain, oh yes and the back super tiring on the old back. We enjoyed your vids. Good luck!
Danny Payne thanks Wayne! Yes they are for sure....and my back and knees are feeling these projects for sure...looking forward to using it for relaxation soon👍😀
great video and build. Nice work on the box. One suggestion, i you are going to put batteries inn it you should put vent hole in or the gases to escape when charging or a heavy drain on them.
Very nice job I thought you. Got pretty professional results on the welds and the design The folds came out nice building a custom sized. Tool box. Imo will always look better than using a manufactured one that is close to what you want and usually not as. Well made as a one off unit I was never trained in welding and metal work but i did work in a shop that. Specialized Architectual Woodworking and metal fabrication. And the people that worked there always impressed me on there welding and cleanliness of their welding especially with Aluminum
Craig Monteforte thanks craig! I’m happy with how it came out. Definitely have a ways to go to improve my spool gun skills.....but still a fun process....
Great job! It looks good and strong. One item you might think about: replace the slotted screws on the locking mechanism with no-slot screws. As it stands right now, someone could remove the lock with a screw driver. Just a thought. Once again, great job.
2twoanddone2 thanks! My neighbor Al, actually is trying get me to change them out...he is a big river fan! And actually you can see his initials when I was using the sheet meta pliers to bend the top lid :) So yes they may get changed 😀👍
I am constantly amazed and impressed with your problem solving and fabrication skills. Always look forward to a new video from your channel. Awesome job!
I'm more impressed by how fast he can move that hammer! I tried to replicate that, and now my elbows all swollen up. But seriously, his extremely broad range of skills is amazing.
Nice looking Box. For the stabilizers give a little thought to using scissor jacks from a junk yard. Most will have a box you can pick through to get four the same size and type. I used them on my tent trailer after the friction type wore out.
Ive got a spool gun on my lincoln electric, Ive never been able to make anything pretty but it gets the job done. Cleaning with acetone and preheating before first weld helps a bit but a grinder can make anything look better. Nice work on the tool box. It came out great!
Camaro Rick thanks Rick! I’m looking forward to working w/ it more. Will have to try cleaning with the acetone. I think many of my spots were way less than clean...actually started with a brass brush before I went and got a stainless one
Nice Job, I'll go to school on you and use some of your techniques! The plan is to make a Cargo Carrier that mounts on the back of a travel trailer to carry camping stuff, to include a 45 LB Electric Bike. etc. I realize it critical to be mindful of the amount of weight at the rear of a Trailer, and therefore will limit the amount of weight to no more than 150 LBS, including the Carrier! Any weight that is added to the back of a RV Trailer, can easily adversely affect handling if not limited! The "Base Frame" of the Carrier will use Tractor Supply's Alum Model, and then Aluminum sides/back/bottom/top will be made per your techniques. Hopefully, I'll be able to incorporate a removal Back Panel, that slides up/down into position. This will eliminate the need to lift the contents over the "Top Edge of the Box," thereby saving my back! Thanks for your ideas!
Awesome job brother. No matter the cost of the project you can’t put a price on learning and/or sharpening skills. I always feel it’s better to build it than buy it regardless of price. Skills carryover to every day life and you can also save your department money if you are willing to put in the work for “free”! Which in turn saves taxpayers money.
bfa178 yes, absolutely! I really enjoy the process of figuring these things out....and hopefully by the next aluminum project, my welds will be a tad better too😀👍
Mike Morris thanks Mike! I’ve been looking forward to doing the inside too...this has taken longer than I planned but I figure once the inside is started it should be the homestretch to the first road camping trip😀
Flip the skill saw blade around so it spins backwards for cutting metal. Works way better. Also, you just need an old blade you can keep around when you do it that way. Awwesome build by the way!
Hate to say it but I just realized your name is Joe. Joeeeee!!!!!! Awesome video brother as always. Can’t wait to get my shop set up. Really can’t work without the proper equipment at your fingertips. After watching all your videos it’s proven necessary!!! Vic
Victor L. Fazio III lol...no worries! I never really ever say it on video...just usually in the description of sometimes at the end of a comment response :)
Looking really good! On a side note - I see now where your daughter gets her multi-clothes changing skills (J/K) -loved the caps :) old and new! :) The camper box is really great!
My hats off to you Joe! Great job!I've watched you build this project from start till this point and you keep learning and teaching us as you go and I'm always amazed what you can do basically on your own. Thanks for sharing and as always Keep Building👍
What an excellent tutorial, thoroughly detailed, great videography, presentation and narration. The result is a custom size battery box with great torsional rigidity and which looks beautifully made, which it was. I was surprised that the lock assembly didn't appear to have a gasket between it and the aluminium it fitted to.
Nicely done. Tip; Any time you are cutting aluminum put some bee's wax or candle wax on your saw blade or drill bit, it will keep the aluminum from galling up your blade. You will get a better smoother cut and reduce kickback.
I wish your video was out about 1 year ago when I built a box for the front of my work trailer , I made mine from 12 mm ply but yours would have been a lot better. Also the trouble with store bought box’s are they don’t usually fit the trailer exactly how you would want . I had a black rectangle box mounted to the trailer but with the short draw bar I managed to jack knife the trailer while backing and completely stove in the side panel of me truck.
you welding 1000 time better than my welding and good to know how make bending its so easy and clean love to see your jobs my next project is to cover my trailer but i don,t know where to buy material i am in toronto brampton
Can you make a list of what you “can’t” do...😎😎.....awesome build, very talented......I need to find a great metal shop like you have.....✌🏻✌🏻 I watch a lot of videos, yours are adventurous and very creative.....thank you for the shares✌🏻✌🏻
That was awesome!!! From someone who doesn't know what she's doing , you made it look so easy ... Minus the tools i don't have but im sure i can rent them somewhere... Thanks for sharing your travel trailer video series... I am definitely saving them for future reference.. Happy trailing!!!👍😁😁😁
As a welder with 40 years experience I would say you did a good job! One suggestion and that would be that you could have less “stick out” that is the amount of wire from the end of your cup to the work price. Looks like you could go half aas you had sticking out
Greg's Shop yep, that is one of the mistakes I kept on making...I guess that muscle memory from steel...haha...but hopefully I’ll have my skills a bit more dialed in for the steps project 😀
homesteadonomics I really have to give you a lot of respect for taking on a project like that. It’s certainly a big risk when it comes to the cost of aluminum. You never know how it’s going to turn out. All your projects are awesome. You are a true craftsman. God bless.
I'm late to the game on this video Joe, sorry about that. That box looks tight.😲👍 There aren't too many things out there I think that would be better to buy than making it yourself, but sometimes if you add the cost plus the time, then I could see why. Great video, Joe 👍
Nice build!! Here’s a tip for your outside corner welding: turn your wire speed way down, you’re using the corners to fuse it together so you don’t need as much filler. Also, position the joint so that the corner is over the edge of your table so you can get to the bottom of the joint easily
Box looks great Joe! I used rivets to put my box together that i built for my 12v batteries and it turned out nice but i'm thinking about going to 6v batteries and am going to need a bigger battery box. Awesome idea to score your bends. Thanks for the ideas!
Brian Rogers thanks Brian! I think rivets are a great time tested technique...and yes the 6vs sound like they do a bit better job for the long term...I guess that’s the whole reason the golf carts use em🤔
@@homesteadonomics by the way I love how you built your trailer from the ground up. Looks awesome. Can't wait to see it finished you by the way feel free to check out my builds. First one was almost ground up. You'll have to let me know what you think
Great job on the box, one thing I would recommend to you and others is when installing the weather stripping @ 9:48, you should place it on the lid, not the top of the box. This will help with accidentally damaging it when you go to put or take things out. I know this is a bit late but others who watch this for their own can benefit. Good job!
Even though you had a few bad welds there is nothing better than doing it yourself and teaching and learning from yourself. Great job!
Fantastic job! I'm a retired welder and you should be very proud of this latest accomplishment!
Bob Ferranti thanks Bob! Hopefully I’ll improve quite a bit on the next projects but man is welding addictive 😀😂
When seeing all the built that you made, it makes me more appreciative to all the work that goes in building a trailer that the manufacturing companies do. Thanks.
You are a true Craftsman attention to detail is spot on much respect
daniel w thank you Daniel!
Buddy let me tell you, that to me was an amazing build! A Big box store buy can not replace having done something on your own! Yes, it may have flaws as with anything but, you know YOU made it and makes you appreciate it that much more. Great job!!!
Very nice job. You couldn't have purchased one that fits as nice as this one, and you've learned how to weld aluminum. Well worth the effect.
MikeBramm thanks mike! Yes there definitely want one that would’ve fit my trailers front tongue angle...and definitely glad to have gone through the effort:)
Dude you did a top job, that welding spool you used is awesome
For your first build bending and welding aluminum it came out really nice!
mgabbard thanks!
Great video Joe. I was amazed you could do the back very sharp bends without breaking the metal.
Thanks! Yes the bending of aluminum is tricky. I can’t remember if this was 3031 or 6061 but one is the bendable type of aluminum and the other will break if bent too far. If you try this just make sure the diamond plate is the formable kind😀👍
Thanks for being a great teacher and being willing to showing your mistakes as well. Such a good video!
Thanks Joe,
Always happy to watch your projects and can do attitude. Please continue your fine work.
Jody Groshon thanks you Jody! I will and I always appreciate hearing from you too👍
It great to see someone using the aluminum spool gun on video...gives me hope, that someday i could use one on my Mig.
DIY by Dino yes for sure! Definitely a little learning curve but I figure it’s just a difference of where the effort is. Aluminum is harder to weld but easier to cut and won’t rust...whereas steel is harder to cut but easier to weld...but will require paint or something to protect from elements😀

and lastly..... you wouldn't be able to watch the build series if I bought one ;) jk
thanks for watching Byron :)
Joe
you could not get such a nice trailer for any price as nice as yours is coming out wonderful work!!!
Nice. That was so cool how you shaped the walls of the box. I so admire your craftsmanship.
Myles Yoshimoto thanks Myles! It really took shape even better than I expected it would😀👍
Great build, Joe! It's well worth it b/c you learned a new skill, procured the needed equipment to perform that skill moving forward AND inspired others along the way. Education can be expensive, but here we all made out like bandits! Thanks again, @HoneyOnWales
DrewT yes, I have learned a ton on this whole project so far...and still. Red to do lots more before it gets done 😉👍
‘And still need to do lots more..’
Great work. You didn't cut corners like the trailer factories in Indiana. Very well built.

It was definitely worth it to make it’s the great part is that you are using the workshop for your projects, well planned. 👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Fadsad Mo thanks for checking it out😀👍
Awesome job!!! Great way to improvise when you don't have the tools to bend the Aluminum. Great videos!! Keep them coming!!!
Dan P thanks Dan! It’s fun seeing what you can do with things you have!
Great job, Joe. I haven't had luck welding aluminum but can do a pretty decent job brazing it. Great idea to score and bend the diamond plate.
Daniel Fisch thanks Daniel! I actually considered brazing those tight corners...but figured I just needed to power through on them with the welder. But I’ve seen lots of stuff with brazed aluminum and it ends up being plenty strong for most all uses
homesteadonomics I think the weld is going to be a lot stronger then brazing.
Great alternative to using a Metal Bending Brake to get those bends in.. Nice job!
96ChevyDually6.5L thanks! It really came out better than I was expecting! But definitely got me into thinking about making a brake eventually
Cool!
Sorry, I’m old and I miss things sometimes. You do really nice-clean work on all of your projects.
So cool!! for sure I want to learn how to weld aluminum once we we finish the house and have more time!! Hope you use it on more projects so I can learn more..hehehe thanks for sharing!!
Odd Life Crafting thanks! Yes I will be for sure! And btw....love your build so far! Mostly been following on IG but watched a couple of the videos too! Top notch and love your design!
Joe
homesteadonomics thanks a lot Joe!! We still have a long way to go but we are definitely learning a lot and having lots of fun along the way. 😊👌🏼
Cool build, great job at your first aluminum welding.
Boris Fett thx Boris!
Awesome job, you should be proud of the whole trailer build. Looking forward to your next video.
Thanks Raymond! Yes, definitely happy with that build so far....but really looking forward to using it instead of building it...haha
Cool tool box build! I like the diamond plate. I didn't know there was such a thing as a spooler, so I learned something.
Bruce A. Ulrich thanks Bruce! It was quite a learning experience...But I’m happy with the results...even if I did get a couple more grays during the process 😀
Outstanding job, pal. (advice: For cold climat Battery box should be linked with inner area for preventing of accumulator freeze out)
Not only interesting, that was a totally AWESOME build joe!!! For the first time building a battery/tool box and welding aluminum diamond plate, I would hafta say you are a very talented individual. GREAT JOB my friend!!! Take care and God Bless. ~Jay~.
Silver Grizzly thanks Jay! Definitely a learning process but I’m happy with it! God bless you too!
I have to say, from the thumbnail I thought this was a box you purchased! Great work, and bending the aluminum turned out great!
great video and build. Nice work on the box. One suggestion, i you are going to put batteries inn it you should put vent hole in or the gases to escape when charging or a heavy drain on them.
Wow! Beautiful tool box
PATRIOTA CHILE thank you! 🇨🇱

Nice job on the box, you made it look easy! Sorry about the hail, that's a bummer after all the great work.
And actually you can see his initials when I was using the sheet meta pliers to bend the top lid :)
So yes they may get changed 😀👍
I am constantly amazed and impressed with your problem solving and fabrication skills. Always look forward to a new video from your channel. Awesome job!
USNERDOC thank you David! The problem solving aspect of these projects is the fun part....but also what keeps me up at night too...lol
Nice job! Very impressed with your work. Thanks for sharing.
What a maker....you always do such a nice job.....
I have to admit I love every one of your videos, thanks for sharing your Channel
Chris P oh man...thanks chris! You are too kind 😀
You are one of my favorite youtubers man.. I enjoy every single one of your videos.. keep’em coming man.. cheers from Chile
Tito Bee-lard ah man....thanks so much! Those are some kind words Tito! Great to hear from 🇨🇱!!!!
Nice Job, I'll go to school on you and use some of your techniques!
The plan is to make a Cargo Carrier that mounts on the back of a travel trailer to carry camping stuff, to include a 45 LB Electric Bike. etc.

bfa178 yes, absolutely! I really enjoy the process of figuring these things out....and hopefully by the next aluminum project, my welds will be a tad better too😀👍
Excellent work as always. Congratulations. Greetings from Uruguay
Marcos Cirigliano thanks Marcos! 😀👍 🇺🇾
That trailer box was a good learning experience with that new welding spool, Good Work it came out beautiful. And Thx!
Joe I am in awe of your skills. Great job!! Bear Down my friend.
Henry Pu Yi thank you Henry! I appreciate it and hearing from my fellow wildcat!!!
That looks really good for your first time
Really awesome video. Look forward to seeing how you do the inside of the trailer. As always it is worth watching what you do. Thanks.
Another great job. Thanks for showing how it's done.
WillTiberius thanks Will!
the last bit where you jump over the chair made your video different from the rest.also loved how you sum up is it worth it to diy.
Beautiful job very nicely done
Hate to say it but I just realized your name is Joe. Joeeeee!!!!!! Awesome video brother as always. Can’t wait to get my shop set up. Really can’t work without the proper equipment at your fingertips. After watching all your videos it’s proven necessary!!!
Vic
Victor L. Fazio III lol...no worries! I never really ever say it on video...just usually in the description of sometimes at the end of a comment response :)
You did an amazing job! It looks as good or better than professionally manufactured boxes!
Looking really good! On a side note - I see now where your daughter gets her multi-clothes changing skills (J/K) -loved the caps :) old and new! :) The camper box is really great!
MM X3 haha...she surpassed my dress change skills a long time ago😂
i like your cutting the backside trick to get an easy bend without using a brake
Very fine looking box you gots there...
Chris
stilcrazychris thanks chris!
My hats off to you Joe! Great job!I've watched you build this project from start till this point and you keep learning and teaching us as you go and I'm always amazed what you can do basically on your own. Thanks for sharing and as always Keep Building👍
Todd Larsen thanks Todd! I’m learning so much through these projects! But I’m also hoping to do a bit of relaxing when I get this thing done😉👍
Reason I like your videos--everything you do is done very well!
thank you Casi!
Nice work Joe, Great video.
Really like that latch, slick!
Robin Lewis thanks Robin! It fit and functioned better than i was thinking it would😀
What an excellent tutorial, thoroughly detailed, great videography, presentation and narration.
The result is a custom size battery box with great torsional rigidity and which looks beautifully made, which it was.

How to build a faraday cage, propane storage bin on your trailer! Looks awesome, love the vids.
You did a damn good job building that box
Very cool box, def better then store bought.
Greg Wade thanks Greg! I’m hoping so....not perfect but it should serve the purpose well I’m thinking 😀👍
Should work GREAT!
Impressive and functional as always!
Glen Faught Jr thanks Glen 😀👍
Man ! I am amazed at your skills and jealous as well !! Great job !!
I wish your video was out about 1 year ago when I built a box for the front of my work trailer , I made mine from 12 mm ply but yours would have been a lot better.

you welding 1000 time better than my welding and good to know how make bending its so easy and clean love to see your jobs my next project is to cover my trailer but i don,t know where to buy material i am in toronto brampton
That's a great looking box!
Matt Williams thank you Matt!
Great job and project Joe👍!
Lebron Jordan thank you Lebron!! 😀
As a welder with 40 years experience I would say you did a good job! One suggestion and that would be that you could have less “stick out” that is the amount of wire from the end of your cup to the work price. Looks like you could go half aas you had sticking out
That is a really professional looking battery box. It looks great! I always look forward to your tutorials.
Looks really good! Experiment with pushing the spool gun on your next aluminum project. I always get better looking welds that way.
Great video, Joe 👍
nice work Joe, looks great on there.
Nice build!! Here’s a tip for your outside corner welding: turn your wire speed way down, you’re using the corners to fuse it together so you don’t need as much filler. Also, position the joint so that the corner is over the edge of your table so you can get to the bottom of the joint easily
I really liked the box it's so beautiful.
That looks really pro man. Nice job. Cheers! Chris.
Thanks Chris! I appreciate you checking it out😀👍
Incredibly impressive. Nice job.
It's really starting to come together! Looks great thanks for sharing.
