On the contrary, I think it was smart to move from RBR. Firstly, the situation at Red Bull is not much different from Mercedes, so even if Danny Ric was still at RBR, he'd be treated as a no. 2 driver. Besides, the pressure to keep up with Max is really hard. The working environment in Red Bull doesn't seem to be very healthy for drivers apart from Max. I feel like his move to McLaren will bear fruit in the coming years.
If he didn’t leave Red Bull, they’d be leading the constructors but he would be a mile back in the driver standings cos Red Bull would still show the preferential treatment to Verstappen.
@@dougconner95 i would still say in this scenario he would be almost 30 to 40 points ahead of Bottas, Red Bull probably wont win the constructors championship this year because of Perez underperforming so if they had Daniel instead im sure they would be winning both championships

Leaving RBR was the best decision imo. You said it very well, DR wasn't going to win the WDC with RBR. My biggest "what if" is DR going to McLaren in 2019. The car would've been developed around him by now. I don't think he would've been fighting for the title now, but would've been much much closer.
I think about this a lot especially when seeing RB now. Daniel could’ve already be World Champion or would be so close right now.. As a Daniel fan it’s heart breaking, but as a McLaren fan I love what he’s done for the team.
Everyone seems to forget this: Daniel said in one of his initial interviews (I'm paraphrasing) - "I'm leaving for Renault because the [now 2022] rules package will favor constructor teams over customer teams." The plan was to build a constructor team around him and gamble that Renault was going to get the formula right before anyone else did (much like Merc did with the current rules package) and he would be in the catbird seat to win the title. Personally, I thought it was a pretty solid plan and was happy he made the move. Not only did us fans seem to forget he said this, but he apparently also forgot... by moving to another customer team (McLaren) before the rules package took place. I still feel like his move to McLaren was a short-term gain and a long-term loss - but who knows: maybe McLaren will somehow oust their constructor team in the next era much like Red Bull did to Renault in the past. I guess we'll have to wait and see....
Great video again. I usually dont comment that much under videos but i have to say that your videos are always enjoyable and in a very good quality. Im happy for Danny that he is now in the McLaren, we know the pace the McLaren has, and i feel like he should stay there. We dont know what 2022 brings with the new car, but definetly looking forward to it. Same for Charles who is also unlucky with, lol, bad luck all the time. Gasly awesome too. Im excited for the future. Keep the videos up man. Youre doing a great job! :)
It would be another Rosberg and Hamilton issue - 2 equally talented drivers both going on edge for the win fighting too hard resulting in chaos and championship points lost….
If Danny stayed at RB we would have seen the same BS RB pulled with Seb and Webber. RB is never shy to show who they favor. Max will have to know that in two to three years if he's still at RB he'll be the next Webber/Danny/Seb.
The fact is that Checo has had stellar performances in a Red Bull that troubled 2 already incredible talent, and this is just his first season. Checo is capable to come from the back and cut through the pack to get himself up there, and has superb tyre management skills. Even if McLaren nail next year’s regulations, they still won’t be able to catch up to RB or Mercedes
I’m going to open by saying that I’m a new fan and over-reliant on Drive to Survive for information about the 2018 season, but I still want to weigh in. First, I think Red Bull let Daniel get away, he could see that Max was gonna be the number one driver and some of Horner’s comments felt as if he took it for granted that Daniel would sign with them again. Second, even if Daniel would have stayed I think he would have been stifled at Red Bull and his production might have suffered, but also, when he and Max were both having competitive weekends they were not afraid to fight each other, which wouldn’t have been good for the team. For me the outcomes are either Daniel delays his exit from Red Bull, but still leaves because he wants to find a team that is going to let him push himself to the limit, or if he stays Red Bull look stronger as a team, but Daniel and Max keep each other from being as competitive and Mercedes would still be dominant. Again, I know that I’m a new fan, and this is just my opinion, but based on the personalities of Max, Daniel, and Christian, even if Daniel stayed for 2019 and 2020 I don’t think he would be there for 2021.
it would have been absolutely awesome to see Max and Danny take on Merc in 2021. as great as Checo is, Ricciardo is an absolute class act, and he might have almost been an unlikely third competitor for the championship.
The motivation Daniel would ve had staying in Red Bull while Red Bull clearly has a number one driver would have been enough to do a 2016 Rosberg type of season
Daniel staying probably would have meant RB comfortably win the constructors championship this year, but lose the drivers. He's so close to Max that they'd often be taking points off each other akin to Lewis and Jenson with Mclaren in 2012.
I couldn't believe that he left Red Bull to go to Reno over issues with reliability when it was runner's power train that was the reliability issue. It seemed more than anything just his feelings were hurt that they thought that Max was their golden boy
Very good point. Ricciardo wants to win a world championship, if he cant beat Verstappen, he would try his luck with Hulkenberg and Norris. Makes perfect sense
Propositions for next what if: What if Kubica hadn't his accident in 2011? (Remember, he had contract with Ferrari then for 2012) What if Hamilton hadn't go to Mercedes? What if Senna survived in Imola? What if Schumacher leaved Ferrari before 2000 or never joined them.
I think the struggle here for me as a massive McLaren and Daniel fan is believing that the tensions between Daniel and Max wasn’t going to implode their relationship which would have resulted in setting back one of them (probably Daniel) several years. I think McLaren really needed the reality check that having Daniel struggle with the car all year has given them. They relied too much on blaming Honda for those few years and lost their way everywhere else as a result … I think copygate was still a negative influence as they took on the Honda engines as well. I’d love to see many more 1-2 finishes for McLaren and both Danny & Lando on the podium in 2022.
That's pretty much it. Danny had the measure of Max when he was still starting out, but Max was still developing. They were near even in 2018, but Max had his number in qualifying by then, and he would have likely dominated qualifying in 2019 as well, just not to the same degree he did against Ricciardo's replacements. Danny knew he had a better chance of being a champion in a team where he was top dog. He's been doing an Alonso, searching for that team... but hopefully he'll meet more success in this team change than Alonso had at Ferrari.
I'm happy he left, as you said all he would have got out of staying are a couple more wins and probably giving RB a constructors' this year, as RB would definitely prioritize Max for the drivers'. Now lets hope McLaren gives that Honey Badger a championship winning car because I speak for a lot of people when I say, it doesn't matter whether you are a Mercedes, RB or McLaren fan, if DR can get that opportunity, we will all be rooting for him.
i know people have a lot of different opinions about daniel moving to renault but i think that made him grow as a driver (mentally). yes, 2019 wasn’t really an ideal season for him but seeing he has a very stable mindset of moving on and see where you can improve on look at where it got him in 2020. 2 podiums (could’ve been 3) and i bet nobody was expecting that from him...
Honestly I think this should really be titled, "What if Red Bull Treated Daniel Better?" After the Monaco 2016 disaster you would think they would do all they could to repay him. Rather than feel Monaco 2018 was an adequate apology and they'd then continue focussing on Max. Then you've got Baku where Daniel realised the team would never have his back again. The RB 2nd driver issue has all been because Horner and Marko can't understand refusing to support both drivers hurts the entire team's performance.
I tend d to agree with you. I was not happy with the idea of him leaving RB. However, I can understand his frustrations with 8 DNF's in 2018. Yes, he had great pace and I believe he would have been in the running for a WDC, but the car kept on letting him down, so I understand why he would look elsewhere. He never really said out loud why he chose top leave, but I'm betting it was everything to do with the shitty car that he had to nurse around the track. Let me know if I'm wrong, but if memory serves, I believe that he also took a new engine and grid penalty at one of the races and that unit blew up as well. What a bloody nightmare.
I think he just didn't want to be in the same position as bottas and just always be number 2, which concerning the way team rivalry goes is basically as bad as losing (since he comes 2nd/2 if ygm). Loving McLaren atm so really hoping they climb through the next few seasons to get that championship
RIC made the best move for himself good luck to him & I hope the McLaren’s take it to red bull nxt yr!!!horner & the helmet are the dark side & him & SAI are the only ones to escape it’s evil grip!!!
Some future ideas for a "what if" video: What if BMW Williams took on Scott Dixon for the 2005 season? What if Robin Frijns made it to F1 (either by remaining in the RB fold or taking up Sauber's option to race in 2013)? What if Johnny Herbert didn't bust up his foot in the 1988 F3000 championship? What if Jean Alesi went to Williams instead of Ferrari?
People highlight the preferential treatment for Max part more than it should be, Reliability was the major issues tbh.. Red Bull always gives this kinda preferential treatment to their new drivers to test them for future. They did the same with ricci and Seb, Seb got told to let ricci by multiple times in 2014 as ricci was on the better strategy. It's not just Max it's how RedBull does it imo
I feel like if he stayed with RB he would've won a few more races each season but never been allowed to really fight for a championship. so I understand why he left.
It´s sad to see this rn, when he doesn't have a seat for the next year. But tbh I also think that he hasn't delivered so I get why McLaren made that choice, but it still hurts. I know he is RB´s third driver so he has an opportunity. Daniel will be missed n the grill.
Now I know, 100% for sure if Daniel never left, Hamilton would've won the championship in 2021. All it would've taken is Daniel finishing ahead of Max 1 or 2 times.
Wow thank you. Finally someone read my mind. My opinion exactly. He should've stayed and fight against Verstappen instead ran away from the fight. Beside he had that info when he was at RB that Renault is just not competitive (reliable) enough to Merc and Ferrari.
It would change nothing at all. He would have a few more race wns on his stats but nothing more. What I can say is that RB would probably be far ahead in CWC. As for DWC, I think him and Verstappen would be taking too many points off each other and Hamilton would swoop in for an easier DWC. It was a neutral move. McLaren may be fastest next year and he may have a shot at a DWC.He canthen try to use his experience to beat Lando to DWC.
Absolutely! They incompatibility on the track doesn’t get touched on enough. They would continue to periodically eliminate one another, leading way for Lewis to win DWC
What would've broken Daniel, and thusly stopped him from performing, was the mental tax of red bulls environment as well as just being Max's teammate. For his own health and staying relatively consistent like he's done these past years, probably wouldn't have been possible at RB. Food for thought, well made and entertaining video!
If you have two roughly equal drivers better chance of constructors champ but surley much lower chance of driver champ because they take points away from each other?
He took some chances - and even though the cars were not too great, at least he didn't stay in bad situations. He basically looked after himself and that's worth respecting imo
Finally someone who says that Riccardo wouldn’t have won a championship with red bull. If he wants to win a championship, then a move from red bull was such a great choice.
Danny boy had 1 good season in 2014 Vs a Seb who was leaving for his dream team Ferrari. He's team jumped himself into a journeyman driver at this point. In 10 years he's never been in the WC hunt, only picking up the odd lucky occasional win.I'll give him credit for having a great PR team though, few have done less and gotten more positive press.
Let's not forget what happened last time red bull had 2 drivers fighting for the championship. Horner and Marko have a history of not being great at settling disputes between drivers in the past, especially as Marko has a tendency to show bias towards his favourite driver of the time, whoever that may be.
Remember that last year with RB, there were too many negatives there, he had stopped smiling. He bad to go even though he was demoting himself, it was better for him as a person overall. Struggling at Mclaren and Renault because youre learning is one thing, but the troubles and the unfair treatment at RB were another level of annoying. I think verstappen is naturally good but I think what makes him good is his reckless/selfish racing, so I think as he has matured he has gotten slower in many ways, by not being quite as risky. Id love to see him and ricc competing again with a bit more respect towards ricc from verstappen and the team. Cos I think that flow Ricc has is the best on some tracks like you say. He has that elememt of #1 in certain ways, just as Id say Ham and Vers do. They are like rock/paper/scissors.
For daniel, I think it was the Monty Hall problem. He had a better chance at something if he changed his path, given the track record with Redbull for the past 5 years. It’s easy to say he should’ve stayed in retrospect.
One thing I could say with redbull would be different if danny never left, they wouldnt have had to go through many of drivers to try to compete against max's pace and time charts

Not really hurt them more, lets not forget however hostile the rivalry between Hamilton and Rosberg got, merc did win 3 constructors championships with both of them at the helm. But it hasnt really mattered till now since 2019 Ferrari was a better car and 2020 they couldnt fight merc. But i think In 2021 Ric and Ver both consistently beating Bottas and sometimes even lewis would get them guaranteed constructors irrespective of the intra team rivalry.
Ricciardo and max was good friend but Hungary 2017 and baku 2018 was not good one to be honest
@@madhavsingh6285 It more than likely would’ve. Red Bull, in my opinion, are the most notorious team for team fighting. I only say that because of Weber and Vettel. I believe Ricciardo could’ve been better than Verstappen, but it probably would’ve ended with Red Bull getting hurt a lot on the grid
If Daniel stayed at Red Bull it would be a Hamilton/Rosberg situation all over again. Toxic garage, but both teammates having a legit chance at the WDC and probably winning the Constructor's Cup as well.
I still feel that Daniel did not make a bad move going to Renault. He was expecting them to continue with their big yearly improvement, having a good teammate, and ahem no more Max.
He did almost go to Mclaren in 2019 but at the end of 2018 Mclaren was bad and was not expecting them to make a dramatic comeback in 2019. So I get where Daniel was getting going to Renault
No more amazingly fast teammates (like max). Having ocon and hulkenberg (the guy who’s never gotten a podium and people still say he’s good), he looked better than he actually was. Hopefully he could get to grips with the mclaren so he could be competing for wins with lando
It's a shame he didn't take the McLaren drive, in hindsight, it would have been a perfect opportunity to learn how to drive it, while it was still just a midfield car
It was still a bad move...
@@dbabu51 "hulkenberg (the guy who’s never gotten a podium and people still say he’s good)" seems like one of the most discussed or atleast mentioned drivers despite his lack of podiums.
@@JosefStaliner yeah honestly
Tbh I think lando needs to be careful not to get cocky next season, cause the car will be so different and both him and ricciardo will have to adjust, something lando has never had to do.
I'm honestly looking forward to it. Because contrary to somewhat popular belief that lando is better than daniel, i don't think that's the case at all. The gap between their performances is mostly due to the fact that mclaren is a hard card to adjust to and lando has been with them for so much longer. So yeah, i am really hoping to see an even playing field between these two driver so fans can more accurately evaluate them!!!
@@a1aska466 yeah I think really Daniel has the experience to beat lando, lando is fast and stuff but daniels got race pace and great overtaking. I think it will be great to watch. But I think eyes are on george/hamilton
@@jacksondale1250 Thats also implying Norris doesn't improve again in 2022 his progress from 19-21' has been amazing
Definitely agree. I think he would be a distant 3rd in the WDC this year. Probably similar to Lando this year
@@dougconner95 i would still say in this scenario he would be almost 30 to 40 points ahead of Bottas, Red Bull probably wont win the constructors championship this year because of Perez underperforming so if they had Daniel instead im sure they would be winning both championships
He himself said countless times that he didnt feel like there was any preference towards anyone. In 2016 and 2017 he was given the preference most of the time. Stop spreading lies. The one who is fastest becomes first driver.
@@folkert2938 just like what merc did to bottas and what RB did to webber. They weren’t as fast so they got the 2nd driver treatment
@Aernoudt Bottemanne Sure......
“If McClaren nails next year’s regulations like I think they will” yikes that aged like the nastiest of milk
Right! Watching the race on Sunday hurt, felt so bad for McLaren :(
Given how Pierre & Alex were treated as Max's team mates, I'm pretty sure Daniel's departure from Red Bull would've happened regardless. He wanted a fresh start with a new team & despite the difficulties he's had I'm sure he doesn't regret it one bit.
" If mclaren nail next years regs, like I believe they will " That aged like milk
Thought the same lol
I’m so excited for next season and I know that if Daniel is given a car that can win races consistently then he will be extremely hungry for that title knowing it might be his only chance, so I hope mclaren nail this and he gets ready for a crazy season
I can't believe you are just a 40K sub channel, your edition, info, everything is just so professional, i'm sure you deserve more and you'll get more, keep your content like that because i simply love it, cheers!
Leaving RBR was the best decision imo. You said it very well, DR wasn't going to win the WDC with RBR. My biggest "what if" is DR going to McLaren in 2019. The car would've been developed around him by now. I don't think he would've been fighting for the title now, but would've been much much closer.
This is the video everyone needed, but no one had made yet. Great video!
I think about this a lot especially when seeing RB now. Daniel could’ve already be World Champion or would be so close right now..
As a Daniel fan it’s heart breaking, but as a McLaren fan I love what he’s done for the team.
Or Max could be World Champion already with the help of DR given he’s the best who’s had that RB seat in years.
I miss hearing Simon Rennie on the radio to Ricciardo. They had such a great partnership.
It would surely make for a great laugh on every occasion. They would make a great match.
This has been really painful to watch, but I agree with everything your say. Great content, man!
Who is here after seeing Daniel qualify p18 in Bahrain lol
yeaaa. I wonder if he retires at this point.
@@AbstraktJazz it wouldn’t be surprising if daniel scored 0 points and got dropped this season
If Danny stayed at RB we would have seen the same BS RB pulled with Seb and Webber. RB is never shy to show who they favor. Max will have to know that in two to three years if he's still at RB he'll be the next Webber/Danny/Seb.
Yep. Helmut Marko was never a fan of Webber. I'm sure there was some quiet nudging going on there.
lol as if we didnt hear merc issue team orders a billion times to benefit hamilton?
Super fair summation in my mind. Nicely done (and I am a BIG #3 fan)
I usually don't care much for "what ifs", but this was a hell of a good video! Subscribed!
what if car was somewhat reliable during his last years at Red Bull
Great take on the entire situation tbh.
I subbed
Agree. RB always has a favorite. Dani Ric already knew it that's why the moves. His only hope right now is Mclaren to be a championship winning car
Incredible video as always
That's good writing/storytelling, esp the last part. Subscribed.
Danny Ric: "I never left"
His Cars sure checkout, I think he underestimated the difference of RBR Program vs Renault once it took him till Year 2 to get a podium.
Wow ...what great content. Keep up the great work!
I think ricciardo will be a contender for the championship in 2022 or 2023
pov you see this when Ricciardo has no seat for 2023
He is back at redbull !! Now all be happy !
This kind of hurts after seeing him and McLaren in Bahrain
He never left. Just stepped back for a while.
the first 10 seconds with the Monaco 2018 flashback was so good 🙌🏻🙌🏻
The motivation Daniel would ve had staying in Red Bull while Red Bull clearly has a number one driver would have been enough to do a 2016 Rosberg type of season
Daniel staying probably would have meant RB comfortably win the constructors championship this year, but lose the drivers. He's so close to Max that they'd often be taking points off each other akin to Lewis and Jenson with Mclaren in 2012.
Aghhh why did you make this video???Everyone is thinking it but don’t talk about it! It’s heartbreaking….great video mate. cheers
New favorite “What If” episode.
Who Is Here After Daniel Ricciardo Replacing Nyck de Vries?
11/07/2023 22:13.
Felt like Daniel would already run away with the championship if he stayed in RB
I couldn't believe that he left Red Bull to go to Reno over issues with reliability when it was runner's power train that was the reliability issue. It seemed more than anything just his feelings were hurt that they thought that Max was their golden boy
This video deserves a subscribe!
Very good point. Ricciardo wants to win a world championship, if he cant beat Verstappen, he would try his luck with Hulkenberg and Norris. Makes perfect sense
I am a Red Bull and Daniel Ricciardo fan myself and I agree with you
Propositions for next what if:
What if Kubica hadn't his accident in 2011? (Remember, he had contract with Ferrari then for 2012)
What if Hamilton hadn't go to Mercedes?
Damnn where's the clip at 0:40 from?
i know people have a lot of different opinions about daniel moving to renault but i think that made him grow as a driver (mentally). yes, 2019 wasn’t really an ideal season for him but seeing he has a very stable mindset of moving on and see where you can improve on look at where it got him in 2020. 2 podiums (could’ve been 3) and i bet nobody was expecting that from him...
you nailed it
Good video. Thank you very muchings. I feel, I very feel.
Honestly I think this should really be titled, "What if Red Bull Treated Daniel Better?"
After the Monaco 2016 disaster you would think they would do all they could to repay him.
I think 2022 will be a very good year for him, if mclaren can nail the reg changes then they are definitley gonna be capable of a championship fight
This is one question I have never been able to get out of my head!
the amount of radio contact between Bono and Lewis would be out of this world
I think he just didn't want to be in the same position as bottas and just always be number 2, which concerning the way team rivalry goes is basically as bad as losing (since he comes 2nd/2 if ygm).
Some future ideas for a "what if" video:
What if BMW Williams took on Scott Dixon for the 2005 season?
I’ve thought about that question quite often. Red Bull and Daniel would’ve been better and happier. I was shocked when he announced it in 2018
Don't worry everyone he is picking up a World championship for McLaren next year 😉
Now I know, 100% for sure if Daniel never left, Hamilton would've won the championship in 2021.
If that happens, i just hope it wouldn't be a 2010 repeat
Ayyyyyyy i love these what ifs??
If you have two roughly equal drivers better chance of constructors champ but surley much lower chance of driver champ because they take points away from each other?
He took some chances - and even though the cars were not too great, at least he didn't stay in bad situations. He basically looked after himself and that's worth respecting imo
Finally someone who says that Riccardo wouldn’t have won a championship with red bull. If he wants to win a championship, then a move from red bull was such a great choice.
This did not age well
One of the biggest what if questions I would ever have asked myself as a Danny fan
Horner and Marko have a history of not being great at settling disputes between drivers in the past, especially as Marko has a tendency to show bias towards his favourite driver of the time, whoever that may be.
bro thought he jinxed verstappen but he jinxed mclaren 😭
i think the meclaren car suit perezes drivestyle and the red bull suit riccardos drivestyle.,,, would love to see a swap
The shade this guy threw to checo
They are like rock/paper/scissors.
everyone has a dream in their life, mine is hearing crofty say - daniel ricciardo! champion of the world. then i can die in peace
The last time we had a World Champ was Alan Jones with Williams back in 1980. 41 years is a long time between drinks for us Aussies!
For daniel, I think it was the Monty Hall problem. He had a better chance at something if he changed his path, given the track record with Redbull for the past 5 years. It’s easy to say he should’ve stayed in retrospect.
One thing I could say with redbull would be different if danny never left, they wouldnt have had to go through many of drivers to try to compete against max's pace and time charts
thats great mate
Oh my watching this a year later has me giggled with the mclaren 2022 car
