I know I shared this with you last night, but you have no idea how much this helped my mix today. I’m working with a vocalist who can be harsh, especially in that 6 to 10 K range. I put this on her vox track actually as the last plug-in and it sounds beautiful. I can add all the volume I want and her voice is no longer shrill.
I NEEDED this!! Can you continue making videos on the philosophies and different ways to approach harshness and muddiness!! Thanks a lot for this!! You’re making legends 🔥❤️
The way you detect the smallest harsh frequencies that most people would not notice is really a FLEX!😁 It also really helps me as an Engineer to look at everything in more detail. Like don't get me wrong I am very detailed but the way your detail is really humbles me lol. Amazing video Devvon, thank you so much!!👌👌
When compared to something like multi-band compressing that range that you might do to control harshness, this technique wins. You get the compression effect from the saturation and it doesn't make said range seem sucked out like MB would. You just need to not push it so hard that it starts to get 'fizzy'. Thanks Devvon!
No one does adds value or teaches in such an honest and engaging way like you do. I hope you’re making your coin for how much you’re enabling smaller/independent artists. The best to do it imo- and there’s a LOT of audio engineer teacher on the tube. You dug me out of such a big hole when I felt too overwhelmed by the learning curve, now my mixes sound awesome.
Hey friend, You are definitely a great producer and mixer. But when the Ozone Exciter Amount is 0, it just not doing things, no warm no round the sound. You can do a null test or run it on Plugin Doctors. The reason for you to think that way must be Psychological.
Ozone is seriously a huge help for me. I am primarily a guitar player, not a producer, so having it helps me get a much better mix and master than I would with stock plugins as a noob. This is a great tutorial and I'd love to see more on Ozone.
Thanks. It's why I always pass my vocals thru my small yamaha or mackie analog mixers. It gets rid of harsh frequencies before it is even digitalized. I sometimes send out the other tracks thru the mixer and back into the DAW. I also send the final mix thru the analog mixers and sumn as much as I can. Warmness.
It’s interesting how audio engineers handle this resonance area differently. For example, I use shaper box the filter area and on the low pass. I find where that resonance area is which on the vocal is bringing it right around 900 kHz and then mess with the mix knob for the vocals usually around 68% And now I’ve not only created Deb in the mix, but I also soften up that area. Are usually throw this on the vocal group or the lead by itself and every group I find where the residence is and do the same thing and so each section has their own place in the speakers, but I love the way that you did this as well
As always, your tips are always appreciated and most importantly, useful. Not to mention, I haven't heard one song from you that wasn't a hit. NOT ONE!💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Another dope tutorial! I've learnt a tonne of gems from your channel over the past 2 years. I think I can speak for everyone when I say, we appreciate you ma man! BTW, when's your joint dropping that's playing in this tutorial, and what's it called? Sounds straight 🔥 Much love from Brisbane/Australia
Ironically I was working on this harsh area today on a record. Using RESO and c6 to suppress it a bit. Sounds cool but I’ll try to through 10 on it and see.
this sadly is not accurate information, the wet/dry examples weren't having any difference, the plugin wasn't doing anything because the 'amount' was at 0%, i went ahead and tried this in my DAW just to make sure & enabled Delta option to see if the plugin is doing anything but there was nothing but silence.
Hey man, could u do a Clip about how to get the vocals super in your face / thick in the bottom without being muddy? Im realy trying and comparing to my references im getting close but there is always smth missing. Tried every sort of compression / multi Band and so on. But compared to my reference it sounds their vocals are thick / in your face without being to loud. Idk if its a mastering or mixing thing. Or do you do specific workshops? Like in depth with the Customer?
Hey devvon i just wanna appreciate you for everything you do helping the world w your knowledge, also question when we gain a two track beat down and then do our vocals do we leave the 2 track beat alon and finish the song with it still gain reduced?
I have a very big pbrlm with this harnesses in voice I have consult with Dr also but didn't help to get rid of this..... Soo please if anyone have idea how to get rid of this then pleasee doo comment 😢
@@HelpMeDevvon would love to see a Renaissance AXX tutorial! Heard you guys rave about it a few podcast episodes ago. I used the 3 vocal presets they have. I agree I like it better than R Vox for sure!
This video must be for *PROS* because I don't hear anything wrong with this mix? I guess when my ear listening skills develops from *Baby Push Ups* then I'll come back to this video an hear the harshness just like the big boys one day.
But, phone frequency still isn't removed, and it's far beyond general issue that should to be processed. "Harshness" here is simply not such important target, dude 😆

That podcast is dope! Super helpful information💯
The exciter effects the signal without any percentage added? It was at 0%
this is great cause the change is subtle but makes a massive difference in how that vocal pokes through in the mix. thank you!
Yessss and that’s why I like it cause it’s not such a drastic effect

Subtractive eq for muddy vocals cut around 300-500hz and cut around 800hz then harshness lies in3k-5k

Thanks devvon!
Nice one ❤️
Amazing man.... Helped alot
Thanks for sharing!
Man the songs you use for the examples are fire! Where can I find your music?
Cool. Thanks for the new tip!
Great tip!!
very very cold method, stay shining bro
Fabfilter Satin does the same thing....or similar....yes or no?
who else feels like the process really took off alot of the high mid clarity and dynamics
Cannot cut without loosing tho 🤷♂️. There are just different techniques to do that in a more musical favor than just cutting with eq.
Great content!

There is literally no difference. Btw. Want to hear real harshness? Listen to 3-4 kHz range.

well he didn't really add any harmonics (the amount slider was left as zero) but he's kind of "running it through" the module.
