Green Lantern the movie was released on June 15th of 2011, and the world of comic book movie discourse was never the same. What began as a normal reaction to a bad movie became a solid decade of unending commentary that's kept this movie an active part of the ongoing discussion surrounding super heroes on film long after it would have ordinarily been forgotten. What does this kind of attention do to the way we perceive this movie? What does this movie's reputation mean for the way we'll talk about future Green Lantern adaptations? And when will Ryan Reynolds finally have had enough?

I watch this film in theaters and was still pretty young when it came out and watching it actually made me want to be Green lantern for Halloween that year
That's really cool, it always makes me happy when superheroes can connect to kids like that.
@@MosaicComics I actually remember buying the trade paperback of Blackest night for the same reason
I think Green Lantern First Flight was a good attempt at making a GL movie. That movie still has some issues in it's own right, but it still kind of portrayed what it means to be a Green Lantern. It was a little too action focused, and not character focused enough to be a proper origin story. It;s still closer to what I'd want from a Green Lantern movie.
As a huge GL fan I really do agree with you. I couldn't decide on the movie for so long. There were things I loved and things I hated. I think they really missed the mark on the costume and how dark Oa was overall. But those are my main nitpicks
If Green Lantern was successful I think the movie slate would’ve looked like this:
Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War (Summer 2014)
Green Lantern Corps: Rise Of The Red Lanterns (Winter 2017)
Green Lantern: Blackest Night (Spring 2019)
Green Lantern: Brightest Day (Spring 2020)
Green Lantern Corps: Lantern Corp War (Winter 2022)
2023-2029
Untitled Sinestro Corps Movie
Untitled Star Sapphire Movie
Untitled Red Lantern Corps Movie
10 years ago this movie came out man time flys
I know, I still can't believe it.

The movie could have worked if it took inspiration from Emerald Dawn over Secret origin.
Much better origin story for Hal.
Agree with your changes. Commit to secret origin. I do think going the green lantern earth 1 route would of worked too. Unfortunately the book didn't exist at the time
Earth One is such a fantastic origin story, too. One of my favorite versions of Hal Jordan.
Green lantern is my 1st favorite dc character and I'm still waiting for a movie reboot
it's not that great but I don't think it's bad it gets a 6/10 and being honest I have a soft spot for it, I was only eight at the time and the film was my first exposure to green lantern, I didn't like the characters much but the rings and oath and OA and the aliens instantly become favorites for me, it was all so cool, my dyslexia made memorizing things super hard as a kid but I still tried really hard to learn the green lantern oath, it took me half an hour of repeating it none stop but I was able to do it and was ecstatic about it, after that when I was nervous I would recite the green lantern oath and it would always help calm down, a bit later I became an even bigger fan when I saw the amazing green lantern cartoon that was airing at the time, and when I got into the comics I got even more into green lantern, the first story I read where issue #25 Resistance and issue #26 Superior Force, even tho I jumped in the middle of the story I still had a blast with it and the fight between Kilowog and Hal vs that one star sapphire is still one of my favorite fight in comics. sorry for the long rant, it's just that hearing today was the 10th anniversary of the movie had me going down memory lane, I hope this was at least a bit fun to read lol
I love stories like this. It's a great reminder that even if I don't like something, it was still incredibly valuable to someone else. I'm glad this movie started you down that path, and that you're still enjoying Green Lantern today.

That's a great story!
@@batatinhacomics thank you :)
They should of played the space angle more
Another thing people forget is that the reason DC cancelled all of those projects was due to the failure of the toyline, not the movie. DC (incorrectly) assumed that the line's failure was due to kids no longer liking superheroes. The real reason was that the toyline was sub-par.
The figures were low quality and mostly depicted obscure lanterns. Also there weren't any villains outside of one parallax toy. You had a line with like 20 heroes and nobody for them to fight. If they just made the main 5 lanterns, one or two guardians and a few of the manhunters from the tie-in video game, the line would've been much more successful. Hell, even throw in some of the goofy looking obscure guys like Stel, Galius Zed, and Chaselon. Slip in a Yellow Sinestro repaint for that one scene at the end of the movie! I think they wanted the toyline to be "green" in the same way the barbie aisle has a pink atmosphere, but it just felt homogeneous.
I think they also overestimated the "construct" gimmick. All of the figures had interchangable construct accessories and the vehicles were all translucent green. The idea was that the more toys you bought, the more your green lanterns could do. Interchangeable wespons are always cool, but with no villains to fight, was all that equipment necessary?
There were some decent points. All of the toys came with a life-sized ring. I also liked the alternate versions of the main characters. Every hal figure had a different outfit, so if you bought a vehicle and got an extra Hal, it felt different. Some of them were pretty clever too, referencing the comics. There was a red Tomar re who kept showing up...I guess it was a deleted scene. Oddly enough, no yellow sinestro from the post credits scene.
4 times in the theaters?! You brave soul. This was one of the biggest superhero movie disappointments of my life.
I just watched the movie and I actually really like it
That's cool, I'm really glad to hear that.
Being a huge GL fan, this movie was a let down I think with any GL fan with how they handled the story and characters.
Do I loathe it? No I do not. I find some good things about it actually. What suffers is the script and pacing and shoving too much GL lore down the audiences throat while mishandling and misintroducing key characters to the viewer. What I like about it though that doesn’t completely take away and making it unbearable is the effects are actually pretty good for the genre of film and aspects of GL it captures. I’m not a huge fan of the CGI suit but not many are. The performances by the actors are pretty solid. I think ultimately Ryan Reynolds makes a pretty good Hal Jordan and Mark Strong is the definitive on screen Sinestro I believe personally going forward. I wish Ryan would stop beating a dead horse with his jokes about the film though and let it go quietly into that good night.
It sucks this movie didn't work out. It hurt this property .
It did, but between tv and comics, I think Green Lantern is about ready to bounce back.
@@MosaicComics I think you're right!
The Live Tweets from Reynolds made me upset because he has been telling all these GL jokes for 10 years without even seeing the film. I do like at the end of the tweets he says that the film isn't that bad, but that's too little, too late.
Interestingly, I did not hate this film. In fact I liked it better than Man of Steel. But I agree the director needed to be booted out. Reynolds did fine given the circumstances. I would have loved to see the next film with the Sinestro Corps War.
I wouldn't go far to call it bad myself, just moreorless average.
I personally think the animated series handle it a tad better imo.
That cartoon is great!
@@MosaicComics cool
Unfortunately, we live in the age of never letting anything go so this movie will be a meme forever. When a new live action GL drops, it'll be a cult bad movie in the Howard the Duck or even the Room. We're on a 3rd Batman franchise since but Batman and Robin is still a meme over 2 decades later.
And the movie terrible not just based on the actual product itself but the potential it squandered and possibilities it ended. It's terrible because of it's cultural impact. It's like the opposite of Black Panther, which was pretty standard MCU fare quality wise but it's cultural impact elevated it to a higher level.
As for Ryan Reynolds, he's just following the lead of comic book fans and giving them what they want. Unfortunately you are in the minority of fans who thinks the jokes are old and stale by now. Comics fans love to beat a dead horse into glue...then use the glue to plaster pictures of them beating the horse everywhere
Your examples are strong, well done. I don't think I'd have made those connections, and I'm glad you did.
Sadly you are mostly correct with your assessment I feel.
Reynolds just looks freaking weird. It's not the suit, not the mask, but the face, especially that open mouth.
I THEORIZE THIS VERSION OF (HAL JORDAN) MIGHT WORK IN A SHOW SERIES & I IMAGINE POSSIBILITIES:
I think it might be interesting if this version of (Hal Jordan) was introduced in a show series.
I can imagine a few teen actors would be a great pick to play the role of (Hal Jordan) in the show series.
Now when it comes to the show version of HAL JORDAN; I imagine that he starts out a little bit like this movie version does, but then later bit by bit he slowly improves himself, through each adventure, and each difficulty HAL tries his best at dealing with.
In addition I imagine that the show version of HAL has a middle-name, and his middle-name is SAMUEL.
To add I imagine that the show version of (Hal S. Jordan) GREEN-LANTERN, he exists in the EARTH-18 Realm, and I imagine that this HAL has a stepbrother.
I also imagine that Hal’s stepbrother is the ladies-man, not HAL, and I imagine that HAL is absolutely clueless if a girl likes him allot.
Plus to add I imagine that the name of Hal Jordan’s stepbrother is (Mathew Adams Jordan) & I imagine his mother is Hal’s stepmother.
Now I imagine that Hal Jordan’s birth mother she died of a serious virus when he was age:4, and I imagine his father mourned the death of her for a year, then by the month of the next year he decided to try to move on.
To add I imagine in the month of FEBRUARY Hal’s father fell in love with a divorced woman, I imagine they dated for four months, and then on the fifth month they got engaged to each other.
In addition I should mention that the divorced woman had a 4year old son, and his name is (Mathew Adams Silver).
But Mathew’s biological father’s last-name is EDGE, it’s because secretly he is the crime boss (Morgan Edge) & so Mathew’s mother decided to have him go by her maiden-name, and not his.
In addition most importantly Mathew’s mother never told her ex-husband she was pregnant with his kid before divorcing him.
Plus to add I imagine that much later Hal Jordan’s father married the woman, and it had happened when (Hal Samuel Jordan) was 5years old.
“Oh, I should mention that Hal Jordan’s stepmother’s former maiden name was (Olivia May Silver) & when she got married to his dad it became (Olivia May Jordan).”
Now I imagine that EARTH-18 Realm’s (Hal Samuel Jordan) gets his Green-Lantern PowerRing, when he is 18years old, it happens on his Summer-Vacation, and during his Summer-Vacation he is checking out an old Air-Force Base.
Luckily the movie didn't succeed. Still can't see Ryan as Hal. He fits something like Booster Gold better
I hope the upcoming HBO series make us forget forget this movie for good. Above how insipid Ryan Reynolds is (always) and all the things wrong with the movie, the worst is how unimaginative, uninspired and boring this film is at every level. James Newton Howard's music for the universally panned M. Night Shyamalan's 'Lady in The Water' is far superior than the forgetable score he wrote for Green Lantern. I've always found Hal Jordan's constructs very basics and simple, but this movie took it to a whole new level of anodyne. The photography, the art direction, the costumes... this movie is pure boringness.
The music really does hurt it a lot...no memorable score, nothing about the way this movie sounds stands out at all.
I was a teenager when this came out and had just gotten into GL with blackest night. I think the movie was decent, but gets a worse rap for not living up to the hype. Here are some areas where it couldve improved:
-The movie leaned into the Transformers ethos of "Make iconic characters look different for the sake of being different". Hal and Sinestro looked fine, but Tomar Re, Kilowog, and Hector Hammond looked awful. Oa was a dark, rocky, hellscape instead of the gorgeous planet we're used to.
-Hector Hammond was too sympathetic. Hammond is supposed to be a sleaze and a con man. In the movie, he's a good guy with awful luck. He turns evil because the script says so, then dies because the script says so.
-The entire movie felt like it was setting up a sequel instead of standing on its own.
-Hal and Carol's relationship was a little TOO comic-accurate. They come off as coworkers, who hook up in a way that's totally inappropriate, not star-crossed lovers. The one sweet scene is when she recognizes Hal right away, but even then, they have to slip a sex joke in there.
-The movie told the Krona story, but named him "Parallax" after the iconic villain, ultimately wasting both characters.
-The other lanterns were underused. I get that it was Hal's story, but give him time to bond with Tomar Re, Kilowog, and Sinestro.
-I would've been satisfied if they had just lifted Geoff Johns' secret origin storyline. It accomplished everything that the movie does while also setting up Black Hand and Atrocitus. First flight was also a good origin story (although it was a little too kill-happy)
4 times prey tell
That story ties into something else I want to talk about, so it'll have to wait for a little while. But don't worry, you'll hear all about it.
