Basil Propagation - Can we regrow a single leaf?

- In this video I will attempt to grow a basil plant, starting from a single leaf. Growing basil from stem cuttings is incredibly popular and easy. Here, I'll be comparing that standard propagation technique to starting with a single leaf, as opposed to a stem cutting with multiple leaves.
We'll be looking at how to propagate basil, how to transplant into soil or move to a hydroponic medium, and how different cutting techniques compare through these processes.
We've regrown basil from the grocery store previously on the channel. You can find that video here:

I go through a simple stem cutting method, and demonstrate how we can regrow ourselves a full basil plant. This is an easy and repeatable process, which can be repeated many times over to grow a lifetime supply of fresh herb.

Your whole approach and video is the epitome of what RUclips is all about. Well done.
Leave it to Jimmy to find the answers to questions that I did not even know I had. Nice job sparking curiosity, and proving your results with testing.
😂 thanks Matt! I saw someone do this and had to try it myself. Very interesting to see the resiliency of plants, but there’s no need to push it to the limit like this
I only just discovered that leaves can grew roots, quite by accident. Was about to try planting in soil, but after seeing your results, I will focus my energy on other experiments. Thanks for sharing I!!
PS: New subscriber- LOVE your content! Thanks so much!
Thanks for the kind words! Greatly appreciated!
As for most plants (could be exceptions which I don't know) a leaf without a node will just grow some roots because only the node contains all the genetic information necessary to grow a complete plant
I love your enthusiasm and positivity on this channel. The videos are informative and interesting and varied.
Happy to hear you have enjoyed the content! 🤙🙏
Good experiments!
Good video. Well explained.
🙏🙏
Wow very interesting 🧐 thank you.
🙏🙏🙏
After having some leaves sprout by surprise, I began to search if they could be grown into plants. Your experiments tell me to stick with stems that have nodes. Thanks for your video.
Good luck!
I love basil, and this encourages me to keep growing it year round. Did you cut the bottom of the stem in order to prevent it from curling inward? Thank you for the video!
I know I'm late but what if you try cutting of the leaf part after it develops a bunch of roots, just leaving the stems? Probably won't work but no harm in trying 😅
an interesting idea!
hmm what is the ph of the water?
I’ve tried the leaf thing several times. Sometimes successful, sometimes not. It’s always a guessing game. But I keep doing it!! Lol
Successful as in you get the new single leaf to grow vertically and produce new, additional, leaves? How is it possible if the single leaf has no node sites? It looks like propagation of a single leaf, regardless of duration, will grow roots but not shoots.
Once you have solid roots. What if you then cut the leaf off?
You need to use long glasses that way the roots have room to growth
I would love to know why you think the basil cutting stems curl upward. I am trying to root my first ever basil cuttings and they both are curling up, one of which is curling almost out of the water!
P.S. love the side-by-side experiment videos.
Appreciate the kind words! I have no idea what causes the curling. Ive seen it with peppers and tomatoes as well. It can be quite frustrating! Best of luck with your basil!
I think the leaf method failed because there is no apical meristem
you shoudl have left it longer to see since what if that was the only thing a person got from the plant?
Its a fair point! At some point I think we just need to draw the line on what's a reasonable amount of time
maybe try cutting the leaves down at least half way
Great try. Guess there is no bud to continue from leaves despite the rooting, thus leaves are incapable of sustaining growth into a new plant, only a try to survive single out.
Me too. I can't grow a leave be a plant 🪴
It’s been documented with cannabis leafs that they do the same thing. The leaf just stays a leaf! Good video!
Well you'd been better off using 'kitchen tissue culture' fun stuff could've recreated the plant.
Will look into that. Thanks for sharing bro
@@JimmyBHarvests Totally agree with Steve. I've just recently discovered tissue culture and now I'm trying to regrow a monstera plant from a leaf in sterile conditions. It seems to me though, that having some meristem tissue (a bud) is key to success and you probably took a bit of it when pulling those basil leaves from the stem.
No need to reinvent the wheel
