- This is a playthrough of Sonic the Hedgehog for the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis.
Sonic 1 may be a bit on the slow side compared to later games, but it's still a good time in its own right. In this run I'll be collecting all 6 Chaos Emeralds from the special stages and getting the good ending... which really isn't that different from the bad ending.

Still an absolute blast to play, even 30 years later. That's how you know you've made a great game. No wonder it's been ported goodness knows how many times.
Great game that aged good, but the fucking Labyrinth Zone feels so crappy, unnecessary and outdate. Everything else feels classic even with today's standards.
It is legendary, though Sonic 3 & Knuckles and CD eclipses this, but I loved that this game actually started the Nintendo vs Sega rivalry at the time. That's why I consider Sonic 1 the most important 16-bit game.

Ahh nostalgia. When I hear the sonic song being played, reminds me of summer in the 90s. School was out and my moms friends nephew came down from NY and we hung out every night. Stayed up until 5-6 in the morning playing games, swimming, movies etc. Good times...

I have such fondness for similar memories! For me, it was Christmas 1991 or 1992 when me and my sister got this. We played it all the damn time. Friends coming over on Saturday nights, ordering pizza and playing Sonic. And when Sonic 2 and 3 came out we were so excited and stoked!!! I remember being at the mall in Fall of 1993 and saw Sonic Spinball- I had NO idea it was coming out and here it was! Bought it right there (well, my mom did) and took it home to play. I was initially letdown because its formatted differently than the other games, but I eventually really got into it. And now I'm freaking 44 years old and it does NOT feel like all that time has passed! It truly feels like it could have been just 10 years ago or something. Yep, good times indeed.

I think this is certainly one of the best games ever made. The levels are beautiful, wonderfully designed, challenging (in a good way) music sticks with you forever and amazing playability.
Despite 30 years of technology advances, few games can compel and enrapture you as sonic did.
Silpheed and Aleste for example, also stood test of time amazingly even after 30+ years passed with new generation of consoles.
This was my childhood. The 90s were a really fun decade. Especially with all the technology that waa developing.

My first game. Sonic came bundled with my Genesis back in '91. Little did I know that it would be the beginning of a life-long love of video games and the start of my -hoarding- collecting.

Sonic CD was about making a better future. Which is apparently go back to simplicity of nature, not too much technology.
I’m obsessed with the Sonic lore but don’t have the ability to actually play the games myself. This is a great way for me to truly be a part of the fandom without having to actually play the games

Aaah the early 90's. This was like magic back then! These old games are so fun and beautiful. They're timeless. I grew up with them so i'm obviously nostalgic but they're still great! I can guarantee anyone that plays them will feel the same even if they're are gen x or y or whatever lol. Cool colorful graphics and nice music and a good brain gymnastics. The 90's was a special time, when games really started to look good and everyone got obsessed about them. The best memories!

Sonic is so cool, this game does show it's an early 90's wave by its drumbeat and saturated backgrounds, but it weirdly doesn't seem unfitting or distant today...seems like it's always alive and contemporary, there's a special vibe about it. I think it aged so well

@@SeasonalGFilmsAll zones have the same difficulty curve they did 33 years ago. After you learn how to beat Marble Sone through memorization, it’s no different than the other zones.
You are clearly a master of Sonic the Hedgehog 1. You don't lose a single ring in the entire playthrough, never took any damage from Eggman, and flew through the levels making it look easy. It's a joy to watch someone so skilled demonstrating their mastery
I remember my brother getting a Mega Drive. I spent hours watching him play this (he let me have a go once in a while!)

I still remember when my parents bought a Genesis for my brother and I in 1991. We'd had the original 8-bit NES up until that point. When I plugged in the Genesis and put this in for the first time, I was absolutely blown away by the graphics and sound.
So glad and fortunate to be a kid in these times. 80s baby 90s kid!

actually, there is an unused "Press Start" graphic for the title screen, but doesn't display due to a coding mistake i believe

This is such an iconic game that has stood the test of time I truly am thankful for this game giving life to one of my favorite fandoms of all time happy 30th birthday sonic

Man, I can't believe it was right on my third birthday of all days when the blue blur himself rushed into the scene via this particular video game, and this is coming from someone who admittedly didn't gain interest in that particular franchise until I was just transitioning into adulthood, meaning I've been 35 for just a tad over a couple of months as of now.
I wish they had this soundtrack in the movie.

Isn't an arcade game defined as game made for arcade cabs (and then possibly ported to home consoles)? You know like those coin munching shoot em ups and brawlers from the 80s and 90s. Sonic was made for the Genesis. I guess you could call some games arcade style games even-though they were originally made for consoles. Thunder Force III for the Genesis might be a good example as it is a classic shooter with no saves and intended to be beat in one sitting. Later ported to arcade machines as Thunder Force A.C.

Played the hell out of this on the Sonic Mega Collection. This was well over a decade ago and oddly enough, I still remember almost everything about the game.

It’s 2025 and this is still my absolute favorite game to play from my childhood! The soundtrack, the level of nostalgia, the graphics it’s just as satisfying 32 years later!

Unlike later Sonic games, this game still required platforming patience as rushing through levels would get you killed. Labyrinth Zone 3 still remains my ultimate hell for this game.
Which I don’t see as a good thing because the main thing about Sonics character is that he’s fast, and most of sonic 1 is kind of just like a standard platformer game

Nostalgia is such an amazing thing. Hearing the music, the sounds and seeing these visuals... I'm taken back to that time as a 5 year old boy, so vividly. Not a care in the world.

It just dawned on me that the indoor areas in Marble Zone are dungeons and torture chambers. Note the barred windows in the background, the various spiked traps, the molten lava/metal....

Wow,so many childhood memories flooded in my mind at this moment.i was able to end the game couple of times only,but those were the best times. One of the best video games....ever.....
3:30 the shield noise lining up with the music has to be one of the most satisfying things to me
I’m not a 90s kid but I still love sonic, but the weird part is that Sonic 1, while very nostalgic since I always emulated it and played it during elementary school computer class or on my dads pc (good times!!) always gave me a strange feeling. This might be because I grew up with a THOUSAND creepypastas, lots of them about Sonic, but I dunno, it just has this strange “first game” demo feeling compared to the others, and to be honest it’s sort of lonely, no Tails, no Knuckles, no Amy, no nothing. You go through the level, beat Eggman (to the same music every time), save the animals, and do it over and over all alone, while listening to the soundtrack, which is still nice, but has a strange, off key feeling that makes it sort of eerie, not to mention that it comes right between the age of the classic 8 bit soundtracks of the late 80s and the full, complicated ones of the mid-late 90s, which makes it feel strange and incomplete, almost. And the bonus stages are weird, too. The same abstract, brightly colored pachinko machine with strange, morphing low poly animals in the background and an off-keyish, almost melancholy soundtrack. I still have this game vintage I have had it since I was six years old n I still have it at age 33 all my sonic games and my mega drive are all in good nick. I have had great joy playing this masterpiece of a game and later on playing it with my little brothers as they grew up too.

I used to play this all the time when I was little.
I was absolutely nuts about Sonic when I was a kid. One of my main sources of distraction throughout those lonely years. I could never imagine that one day a device would be invented so you could play these games on the go
I played this since I was like 5-7 years old but my first Sonic game was Sonic Dash 2013
