It seems the only reason stryker made the frequency lock a resistor was to get past regulations while allowing users to have a high power CB. You have to love them for that.
I just want to let everyone know that if you know how to plug in a soldering iron you can easily remove this resistor in 5 seconds or less. It helps to have a small pointed iron, but it's really not necessary. It is not difficult unless you cannot see. Just make sure you only heat the contacts on the 1 resistor. Very simple job. Remove 4 screws from the bottom cover, heat the resistor & push it sideways while heating until it slides away. Put the screws back in & you are all set. P.S. The newer radios have a small, white, arrow pointing to the resistor right on the circuit board itself. Very user friendly. Thanks STRYKER for an amazing radio.
Best review on the internet, thanks! I've had this radio for about two weeks and it is wonderful... as long as it stays working. The first week was spent as a base station while I got used to it. I have been into radios for 28 years and this is most certainly the nicest culmination of "digital with an analog feel" that I've experienced so far in an export radio. I've had Galaxy 99V's in all of my vehicles for many years and I've finally found something I feel confident replacing them with. The receive is superb on all bands and noise rejection is stellar. The receive didn't seem overly sensitive to me. Compared to a Galaxy 99V, a Cobra 148F and a Magnum 257HP in the same vehicle the Stryker 955 had the quietest receive by far. Next best was the Galaxy. Something to note, the Magnum 257HP was so noisy I had to take it out after two days. Any type of city driving was unbearable. Did I also mention that this radio is beautiful? Very easy to read, nice even coloring of your choice, no real bright spots. Lovely! Thanks again for the review and keep up the great work!!
I have the 955hpc and love it. It is the best radio I have purchased so far. There is no SSB drift at all. They failed to mention that the steps of the VFO can be adjusted quickly by holding in the function button in VFO mode simply turn the VFO knob and the steps will change.
Great job! This radio has proven to be awesome sounding and receiving radio. The audio is great, as all the Strykers have been. The receive is very sensative with low white noise. VERY VERY GOOD AUDIO.
Man, that radio looks awesome...SO many different features that I like...the echo on/off switch, 5 different selectable roger beeps...the only thing it lacked that I didn't like was a simple one tone roger beep, but hey...I got one to put in there and run it through the factory roger beep selector and display on the menu. Other than that minor deal...totally awesome radio, and I will definitely be getting one for sure, maybe more than one...one for the table by my easy chair, one for the mobile and one for my radio shop. Damn pretty radio with a ton of features that are actually useful and user friendly. Great review, thanks!!!
An absolutely full measure coverage video. A Best in Class. Just ordered a SR-955HPC today. I hope my technician has the eyes to see that chigger/flea sized transistor. Have operated a most similar SR-655HPC for several years. But I want SSB and the few other detail upgrades.
SUPERB review on everything and I am so thankful you explained everything that I needed to know and be able to use my stryker in the coming days once it arrives..
Just upgraded from a Galaxy dx959 to this radio. Man, do I have a lot to learn. Lol. Thanks for the detailed review. Went ahead and subscribed so I can actually try to learn something about these radios. We use lower channels for concert touring, so I had to upgrade. Thanks again...
I know it has been awhile since this very good video was posted. I just wanted to say I have bad eye sight and an unsteady hand. I tried several times to un-solder this small small small resistor. Every time I failed. Luckily I didn't burn the traces. What I did finally do is get a razor knife and cracked that sucker in half. Works
I see people buy these and spend money to make it louder or better in their opinion. The best thing to do with this unit is take it out of the box wire it and fire it. I will say the mic leaves a bit to be desired. I am running an astatic mic. I get more compliments on this rig than I ever have the dozens I owned before buying this one. Did lose a final about 3 weeks into owning it. Stryker fixed it for free but said it was my antenna or coax. I didn't bother to tell them I ran 3 different radios on the same coax and antenna for 5 years. Overall a B+ sounds good ,loud and proud.
Does this Transceiver use a Tayloe SSB modulator/demodulator for LSB/USB which makes for a better experience on the SSB modes, as there is no need for a crystal SSB filter as all energy is converted into LSB/USB depending on the position of the LSB/USB switch.
Hello it’s been a few years since I sent you the radio shack meter with a light in it. Lol In the past had some cobra’s but got into the Galaxy’s. Slowing sold off a few and the one galaxy that had power like no other. The one I have know I want to get that dead key swing back but don’t know just how much I need to do. Anyway I really have enjoyed the information you provide, keep it up as far as I can see your the few that know your radios.
I hear ya. Back then, I had a Royce 23-chan AM/SSB base/mobile. Boy, were they big and heavy back then! I was shooting skip barefoot from Adak, AK and talking all over the Pacific, and I just can't even imagine what I could have done if I'd had my 955HP back then.

THANK GOD STRYKER FINALLY CAME UP WITH A 10/12 METER RADIO THAT HAS ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES AND BE ABLE TO GET YOUR SIGNAL OUT BETTER THAN MOST OTHER PRODUCTS. EVEN GIVES A GALAXY 98 OR A 2970 A RUN FOR ITS MONEY
Excellent Review Presentation. On the R/beep which I don't use and as you stated, ssb stations don't like. I was surprised there wasn't a single beep option like the HR2510 only had. Most were too long and or obnoxious.
Can I ask you, I have a Galaxy DX-33 that's been turned up by Beagle in TN, exit 167, and it's done GREAT. Though I was thinking of buying a new radio.. Is a stryker 440hp good compared to a Galaxy 33?
Which 1 of the stryker are the best? This 955 seems nice but the 497 seems to get more power and how does it compare to the galaxy 98 200watt? I'm lost in which way to go
Very nice, glad to see a radio with AM and SSB performance on par with the higher-end radios. I don't have TOO much experience with the RCI-2950/RCI-2970 but I'd say the CRE 8900 and Anytone AT-5555/Alpha 10 Max AM-1000/DX-5000/Superstar 6900 family of radios is better than the 2950 and 2970.
How much different are the settings between this and the V2? I bought a V2, and can only see one thing different, being the ANL/NB switch settings. Thanks in advance...
Hi! What hole/plug is used for the CW key?!! Finally a radio that has CW capabilities!! 70-80 watts of transmit power is just okay-lots better than 4 watts. Does the radio need to wired directly to the car battery? Can the CW function be used on the CB/11 meter band? How much does the radio cost? How much does the radio weigh? Can it be used as base station radio? Would using a directional antenna help? Thank you for the great video!
Ill add last, the USB data cable connection in the rear of the radio is a "Motorola" USB connector. Meaning its not A,B or C. Very few others use this to date. Garmin GPS still does.
Got a New 2021 model Stryker SR-955 3 months ago from a tech, the last year of the fully adjustable board best radio I ever had. I might buy a 2022 just to get the non adjustable board. same radio just software adjustable.
Im sure they could have made the export freq a lot easier to do on the radio rather than having to unsolder a component. Some cheaper radios you just hold 2 switches in whilst turning the radio on or on the Lincon 2 just cut a wire, i can imagine some folks going inside this rig with a big soldering iron and messing it up . . Still needs to drop around $50 in price but it has a better quality build inside compaired to Cre 8900,ect . Quote from you "Stryker did something unique with this radio and they did so by listening to their customer base" by all accounts there customer service is non existant .Been reading loads of reviews on this rig and you got rid of yours pretty quick so you might be better to update yor web page and say why as its not a cheap rig .Stryker have ment to have updated this rig and fixed the voltage issues showing incorrectly on the display and better grounding and a few other fixes !!.
I agree with zLOSTNOMOREz. The real question here is how does the radio perform on sideband. I know a lot of operators (myself included) that buy a radio based on SSB performance before AM performance. Going by cbradiomagazine's other video reviews, etc...there should be another video showing the radio on SSB as well as AM. Shit, I'd like to see it in FM too.
Most, if not all, of the exports are all designed for the truckers and NOT the serious SSB users such as me and a few of my friends.. The best thing to do is forget these fancy radios and get an HF rig like a Kenwood TS 570 or an Icom 746 both decent used rigs...
Hi there just seen your video very good just a question about the rig my friend has a couple of these and has a problem with the power output on this as it's now showing that his DC power will not let him transmit as it's to low how does this happen and how can this be either reset or how would if this of happened working great one minute then cut out the next any ideas ?
This is not a export radio, this is a HAM radio that can be modified. Radios like the President Grant are export radios. In the menu function we can change the frequency range for the country of use . examples UK, EU, IT , PL .
I need to comment. The Key word here is EXPORT Radio. Sorry, but it IS a nicely glorified CB, fine, also I'm sure that it's quite expensive, the receiver in NO WAY can possibly ever compare to an amateur radio, same for the tx on any export radio. With an Amateur radio, sure I'm talking - second hand used amateur radio, but if you guys know the difference in design and then some, and I'm sure some, most, if not ALL do know whats inside these exports. I have a couple that I'd never get rid of, ever but I got them for so- cheap and they work great @ 50 watts SSB out. Please just think about what your buying and the price as this radio can not possibly be inexpensive, new or used as well. Trust me, in all the years I have been into radio doing this and all sorts of "that" in the various shops I've worked in, An amateur radio for the same price if not less will give you so much more for your money. SO much more in performance, quality, or the looks just to come home to after work!! etc. I'm not knocking this radio at- all and all the similar ones but just think before you spend a wad of cash- for a new or a used set. Just a word of good advice! and keep on keying up. I love the hobby, always have. g' night all.
Its not very expensive....around 350 or so. Thats about what someone sinks into a CB by the time they invest into the work to get the power up on them. You can buy amps and all that crap or buy a 10 meter and convert it. I ran a Strker 440 in my big rig for years and it took a damn beating and talked like a champion. Thats what they are for and it done a excellent job. Far far far from a waste of money. Glorified CB....maybe if you wanna look at it that way. But using it as a CB it does a damn good job. My Strker 440 would hit guys on their base stations at 50 miles easily from my pickup truck from a magnet mounted antenna. That is fantastic performance far as im concerned and they are tough as hell. For that type of usage worth every penny
Can I use the same power plug from my cobra 29LTDClassic to power up my new Stryker SR955HPC???? any idea I am new to all this I have the power supply directly hooked up to my truck battery I do not have a cigarette lighter 12 V it is hardwired in was just wondering if it’s possible both of them are three pins some one please let me know thanks 🙏🇺🇸👍
What would be a good mobile antenna match for this radio that would take advantage of all the different frequencies (AM/FM/USB/LSB)? Thanks for your help.
AM/FM/USB/LSB aren't frequencies. They are modulation types. Any antenna designed for the frequencies the radio covers, will work. The antenna I use most on 10 meters is a Solarcon A99 cut down for 10 meters. I use mainly for USB but also do a little FM with it as well. We have a 10 meter repeater in this area, so I hop on that every once in a while.
these am i correct need not expanding, but expanding and tuned ???? if eg i just did the mod on it via the software, surely the centre frequency b4 its modded would be made for its 10 mtr usa is it ?? the rest surely will need going on a scope ~??
I love my Stryker 955! I don't seem to get much range though unless my squelch is noisy. I heard the asphalt plant talking 7 miles away with the squelch fully noisy on a 2ft Firestick antenna. I can't talk back that far though maybe 5 miles on that antenna with SWR set correctly.
A 2ft antenna is a huge compromise - ideally you would want to use a 102" antenna but as that is quite long most people opt for a 5-6ft antenna or a large coil antenna like a Wilson 5000 or Sirio 5000. Your 2ft antenna is the reason your range is short - it's like putting tiny tires on your lifted 4 x 4.
@@cbradiomagazine Thanks for responding. Yea I read an article the other day that suggests if you reduce the antenna by half you need double the power or somewhere there abouts. www.offroaders.com/communications/cb-antenna-length-how-does-an-antenna-size-affect-my-cb-radio/
@@woodymaistro9115 I'd love to have one for my Mini van. The Lil Wilson I have just barely has a usable SWR on 1 and 40 at 2 to 1. Ch19 is 1.5 though. I have a mirror coil antenna on my big rig now that works decent.
Anyone know where I can source parts for this radio? I need a frequency counter display. My unit is shelved until I can get the display replaced. Thanks in advance.
Very concise review. I planned to buy it and now I am further impressed with this radio, vs the President Lincoln II plus, which is my 2nd choice. There is one question I hope you could answer. I understand the radio works off 13.8v, but when its off for a long time, How is the memory of all that is programmed in retained? I would assume there might be a button battery for this, But, I am not certain. Can anyone elaborate if they know? Thx. 73's.
The link on your website under the “Stryker” section lists this and the 440hp. When I click on either link it only takes to the 440hp. Cant find the article on this radio...
Thank you for letting me know - must have happened when we launched the new website this year. I'll update - Here's the link for reference - cbradiomagazine.com/stryker-sr-955hp-10-meter-ssb-export-cb-radio-review/

Cant agree more with blend of digital and analog. I love my SR-655, my favorite. Ordered a SR-955 today.
Have but yet to install. Wanna use 955 as base but good power supplies are stupid expensive!!!! Even the cheap ones are gross!!!

When I did the frequency expansion mod in Nov, 2019, the board actually had an arrow pointing to the resistor.
Great job! This radio has proven to be awesome sounding and receiving radio. The audio is great, as all the Strykers have been. The receive is very sensative with low white noise. VERY VERY GOOD AUDIO.

HI,
It's interesting that the regional freq mod
( removal of a link C579)
is part of the up/ down change input.
(U505 pin46 ~rp500~pull up R619 ~
de-bounce capacitor C579 ~ L504)
Since the inductor L504 is missing ,
they are clearly using this logic input
to determine the frequency limits.
but nice to know in the future there can be
an up down control on the mic.
With the option for a ctcss module it would be nice if this radio would do split freqs or allow the clarifier to adjust the tx freq 100kHz so it could get into 10 meter repeaters.
John Leibensperger The split frequency was a great option and should have been incorporated into the 955 Stryker .
Good video, good job! Good coverage & very thorough

Depends on what you want to use it for. If you just want a great powerful LOUD AM radio, buy the SR497HPC, if you need SSB, the 955.
I love this radio
Good job on the review
Great overview. Thank you
What's the size of the inline fuse? I can't see the number on the fuse from my RCI Ranger RG 99 and can't find any info on it.
So removing that resistors allows you to use it as a cb correct?
Yes it does. Cb bands are set to Band 4 after resistor is removed.
Do you really have to remove it?

Also why a CW jack with no cw mode? USB, LSB, AM, FM, PA. I'm confused.
I want to install my PA speaker but there is no jack. The front says PA mode, the rear says CW for the jack.

I was thinking about this radio with a predator 10k competition antenna....or should I get a different antenna. Id love suggestions on this please
Try SR-A10 if you need maximum range.
I have this radio with the Predator 10K and a "Bullet Bob" four pill and it is a performer.
And where does the PA come into play? I did not see a jack for the PA speaker. Just a CW and speaker jack also a data jack.

I wish I had spent a little more money and purchased this radio instead of the AT 6666. But then again I like the really small footprint of the 6666.
This is not a export radio, this is a HAM radio that can be modified. Radios like the President Grant are export radios. In the menu function we can change the frequency range for the country of use . examples UK, EU, IT , PL .
What is “COAS” in Function menu? Last adjustment. But I didn’t see you mention that.
No CW mode switch but has a Morse key socket. what mode does the radio have to be set to? AM??
Great review thank you

Wow! Seems to be the complete package.
Instead of unsoldering that small resistor in order to unlock 11 meters, could I use a snip to break the resistor?
Can I use the same power plug from my cobra 29LTDClassic to power up my new Stryker SR955HPC???? any idea I am new to all this I have the power supply directly hooked up to my truck battery I do not have a cigarette lighter 12 V it is hardwired in was just wondering if it’s possible both of them are three pins some one please let me know thanks 🙏🇺🇸👍
Great review that I have watched several times. Now........when are you going to review the new Gen.2 ?
Much appreciated.
Some people say they sometimes can't understand me,,,would it be the microphone or antenna?,,I have a SR-955 HP
Where’s the resistor that l need to REMOVE FOR COBERTION CB to 10 METERS?
Thanks for the Video
What would be a good mobile antenna match for this radio that would take advantage of all the different frequencies (AM/FM/USB/LSB)? Thanks for your help.
AM/FM/USB/LSB aren't frequencies. They are modulation types. Any antenna designed for the frequencies the radio covers, will work. The antenna I use most on 10 meters is a Solarcon A99 cut down for 10 meters. I use mainly for USB but also do a little FM with it as well. We have a 10 meter repeater in this area, so I hop on that every once in a while.
these am i correct need not expanding, but expanding and tuned ???? if eg i just did the mod on it via the software, surely the centre frequency b4 its modded would be made for its 10 mtr usa is it ?? the rest surely will need going on a scope ~??
can anyone tell me if this thing will work whit the standard cb channels whitout removing the small resistor??
Nope. CB is on 11 meter.
@@robertpolkamp Easy to remove small chip. new ones have arrow pointing at it.
Buena tarde
UD me puede informar porfabor en dónde consigo el software de programación para darle más potencia
Its a very Nice Cb Radio,For the same Price You could Buy a Icom 718
Can you do a review of the stryker 497hpc2?

@@cbradiomagazine Does single side band work correctly after converting the radio to 11 meter? All my frequency and channels seem to stay the same.
Get a real antenna, Sirio 5000 best.
@@woodymaistro9115 I'd love to have one for my Mini van. The Lil Wilson I have just barely has a usable SWR on 1 and 40 at 2 to 1.
Ch19 is 1.5 though.
I have a mirror coil antenna on my big rig now that works decent.
I am thinking about buying a SR 955HPC .. can you do the modification for me?
Can you use it for uk settings? Fm and side band especially? Hanks for your time
