The dollar sign was actually based off of the pillars of Hercules and the S shape is meant to represent a flag between the two pillars. We also use the dollar sign in Canada so unfortunately it is not made of the letter U😂

That is to say there is no exact reason the dollar sign is what is today and we may never know where it truly originates!

I think points should be based on how close you got to the price in percentage. Like 1 point for every 10% difference. That should narrow the points discrepancies between low and high cost items. Cufflinks don't have an inside and an outside, both ends are visible outside the cuffs.

If someone is exactly correct (helping you here Ben), the other player gains 2 times the point they would otherwise. This is mainly to reward and actual correct guess.
