Gee, Merlin needs to be an indoor cat. He eventually needs cat tv, whether a bird feeder outside a window, even a small fake aquarium, and a catio with a roof, if space is available to feel the outdoors, it does not have to be big.
I’m wondering why Dr. Scott did the ‘easy’ gland first - if it were me I would want to tackle the more difficult part of the surgery first, when I was freshest…
My thoughts exactly! I would want to tackle the most complicated part of the surgery first, while my mind is still very fresh and it’s easier to concentrate. I wouldn’t want to wait to begin the hard part after I’d already had to be so focused mentally and had to do such intricate surgical work already. Mental and physical fatigue seem like they’d be higher toward the end of a long procedure, so I don’t understand the reasoning for not doing the “easy” part toward the end. Two different yet connected shows. Technically I think 'Vet on the Hill' is kinda under the Bondi Vet umbrella or at least it used to be. But they have become more separated over time I think
I never like being 'that' person, but it pains me every time I watch an episode with a cat that has been hit by a car, in a terrible fight with a local street cat or mauled by the neighbors dog. Your cat can't get injured in these ways if you don't let them outside in the first place!!! I understand that sometimes your indoor cat escapes outdoors and things can happen, but these incidences always seem to happen to cats that people routinely allow outdoors and it never seems to click for them that they need to create a safe, enriching habit for their cats INSIDE their homes rather than letting them go out.
Not a fan of the female vet. She's always instantly assuming the worst and seems super ready to give up. Alt least the cat only lost the leg instead of it's life. I have seen breaks like that fixed though.
Vets should not jump or become startled during a surgery, she could have caused serious damage to important parts of the remaining tissue. I'm beginning to wonder if trainees are taught not to jump or get startled while their in the operating room, there should obviously be some scenarios where this could happen and how they can avoid it. I understand if the muscle twitches while the animal is under anaesthesia, but still, very dangerous.
I used to work in a shelter and we once had a spaniel puppy in a similar condition. Her leg was run over by a four wheeler. Her owners wanted her put down. We had to amputate her leg but she was adopted very quickly into a nice family with children
That fracture isn't that bad. I've seen worse. Dr Andrew could have fixed it within an hour. Any vet could have fixed that within an hour. My country vet could have fixed that easily. That vet chose the last option as the first option. Not cool.
That was my first thought. Referral to an orthopedic surgeon to repair the broken bones with rods/screws/plates/etc. Perhaps the vet on the show felt that the operation to repair the leg would be more painful and dangerous for the cat than full amputation? I’m just guessing. I would think that having a limb and the surrounding bones and muscles would be more traumatic and painful for the cat than having the broken bones surgically put back together, but what do I know? Also, orthopedic surgery can be prohibitively expensive, so perhaps that was one of the factors taken into consideration? Idk
I'm almost certain that all options would of been considered in this case, and the best outcome for Merlin.. if the bones were shattered from impact of being hit by a car no amount of rods, screws or plates would of helped anyway.. 🙄 Well done to the team for their impeccable care and support to merlin and the family. ❤
You are talking nonsense with no medical knowledge. The cat's leg is shattered at the shoulder, it has nerve damage. Best practice is to amputate and the cat will manage well.
Please do not use the words 'put to sleep', it is so misleading. If you could consider using the words 'put down' or any other softer version of death. Thank you! Love you all ❤.
I don't understand why the first thing you say when the cat has a broken/ dislocated leg, that your first thought is to take it off!! If it was human you'd fix it and not amputate!! There are such things as screws and cast etc...!! Yet I supposed that's a bit more trouble!!
Why put the cat through painful and dangerous surgery to insert rods and pins when you know the leg is compromised with nerve damage and at risk of infection? The leg would never be functional and the cost would be many thousands of pounds for a bad result. Much better for the cat to amputate the leg. Cats manage fine with 3 legs
Kids jeed to learn realities of life. Sheltering them doesn't help anyone but yourself. Sounds pike you have issues about confrontation you need to deal.with yourself.
@@dana102083 Where is the "confrontation" in this? You don't seem to understand what that means. There is no "confrontation" shown. The dictionary definition is "tending to deal with situations in an aggressive or hostile way and goes on to mention aggressive and argumentative" None of that happened in this clip I just didn't like the camera using the kid and zooming in on her very subdued face for our entertainment. You really seem to have some issues yourself and are projecting is all I can assume from your post Personally working with children there are an awful lot of children dealing with far too adult issues way to early they really don't need to. My comment though was around the voyeurism of the camera
Why could you not repair the leg instead of cutting it off? You could have at least have tried! Just because you have a three legged cat doesn’t mean other people want one. Sure it’s easier for you to remove it next time put a metal rod in and give them a chance to heal. Poor Merlin. We still love you.
they literally said there was a big chance of him dying during that surgery and it being almost impossible to recover that leg for him. it wasnt just broken, it was shattered. there is no 'you could have at least tried', if they try that and it doesnt work its over. its better to go with a safer option than to risk someones cats life just because they might want a more aesthetically pleasing pet
Oh, are you a vet? If not, how about we go with what the vet says is in the cat's best interest. Besides, putting the rod in would mean the cat would be in pain for a lot longer and likely also need more surgery. I don't care if the cat looks pretty. There is a higher chance of the kid still having a cat at the end of the day, that's all that is important.
Fixing a leg like that can be highly complex and put the cat through more pain, stress and trauma than simply amputating it; fixing the leg would mean extended pain, and likely more surgeries- more pain for the cat, more financial stress for the family. I have a three-legged cat myself, they adapt very well to a missing leg and he's no different to care for than my four-legged cat
Euthanasia is not an evil thing. It is more humane to put an animal to sleep if they are going to have a poor quality of life. An animal cannot understand why they are suffering like a human can. Every vet practice out there euthanizes animals. It may surprise you to find that practices like pregnant spays are also fairly routine in most places.

I understand that sometimes your indoor cat escapes outdoors and things can happen, but these incidences always seem to happen to cats that people routinely allow outdoors and it never seems to click for them that they need to create a safe, enriching habit for their cats INSIDE their homes rather than letting them go out.
🥰
Not a fan of the female vet. She's always instantly assuming the worst and seems super ready to give up. Alt least the cat only lost the leg instead of it's life. I have seen breaks like that fixed though.
These people are odd one wearing shorts and one wearing coat??
Omg
This is why you don't let your cat outside. If it was inside it would not have been run over.
Uh uh.
Can’t the leg of Merlin have been saved?
No, unfortunately, it was shattered. 😔
@@CarlingBlack too bad. I mean it would have been better if it was saved, but better 3 than nothing right?
I used to work in a shelter and we once had a spaniel puppy in a similar condition. Her leg was run over by a four wheeler. Her owners wanted her put down. We had to amputate her leg but she was adopted very quickly into a nice family with children
@@Princess_Cheese Our pets are so resilient, adapt very quickly, they just need a chance. We are very humbled by all love ❤️
Merlin should have had an opinion from an orthopaedic specialist before they operate.
How do you put together shattered at such a high position?
Agreed!!
Exactly what I was thinking!
I personally prefer laid to rest
I don't understand why the first thing you say when the cat has a broken/ dislocated leg, that your first thought is to take it off!! If it was human you'd fix it and not amputate!! There are such things as screws and cast etc...!! Yet I supposed that's a bit more trouble!!
Why put the cat through painful and dangerous surgery to insert rods and pins when you know the leg is compromised with nerve damage and at risk of infection? The leg would never be functional and the cost would be many thousands of pounds for a bad result. Much better for the cat to amputate the leg. Cats manage fine with 3 legs
I wish they hadn't had so much conversation about the cat in front of the kid. Vet was lovely and nice to her but still...
The dictionary definition is "tending to deal with situations in an aggressive or hostile way and goes on to mention aggressive and argumentative"
None of that happened in this clip
I just didn't like the camera using the kid and zooming in on her very subdued face for our entertainment.
You really seem to have some issues yourself and are projecting is all I can assume from your post
Personally working with children there are an awful lot of children dealing with far too adult issues way to early they really don't need to.
My comment though was around the voyeurism of the camera
j'ai triste et mal coeur coupe une patte chats. je le prends pas desole
What qualifications do you have thay make you think you know better than a literal doctor? You know whats worse than a disabled cat? A dead cat
Are you a vet?
The female vet is the only vet I ever heard say put a animal asleep. She has no right being a Bondi Vet. She should be removed.
