Are Highway Trucks Trash or Treasure? (Pt1) - Snowrunner (with maps)

In this video I go through how I tackled the game in livestreams without using All Wheel Drive or Differential Lock. Using Highway trucks to their full potential and showing that AWD and Diff Lock aren't required.
This is a part 1 where the part 2 will cover the Ford CLT9000 and International Transtar 4070A in more detail.

Love Highway trucks but only use it on paved roads... its time for a challenge. Great vid, thanks !!!!!
@@juanpabloescobar9424 Give them a go! It's all about the tyres my guy! Have fun with it!
Man is playing on hardcore mode 💀
Gotta respect that. I always wanted to get the Transtar to work.
@@DanDaFreakinMan You can do it too! Michigan is a great testing ground! Go for it!
@@DecPlays_ Thanks for the encouragement lol. So far I only used it to carry fuel trailers or long haul works on paved and dirt roads.
just go in the files and change the awd and diff to default and diff always
To me the biggest miracles of this game is, that despite the developers had not the slightest clue on how transmissions and power transfer work, at the end the whole thing turns out to be so much fun and somehow right.
@@danielnagy5721 Aye it was better in Mudrunner and takes some getting used to in Snowrunner. At least you can tap the gearbox button to fly up the gears quickly
I remember using the Transtar back when the game was new~ish. Transtar had a terrible glitch where it would slap it's chin on the ground over the tiniest of bumps in the road, making it basically useless. So glad they fixed that. Do kinda wish they'd make the 9000 turn it's steering a touch faster though. It's annoyingly slow. I actually remember using the Transtar recently for the large crane and being pleasantly surprised with how well it actually shifted. Tippy, but it was fine so long as I was careful about it. Maybe I should take on the challenge myself :P
@@alorynelftuber Go for it!
They're not useless but definitely limited in the base game. However, they do fine on mod maps like Highway Haulin The Region, and Highway Haulin 2 the Region
I think that every truck should at least get lockers, ive never seen any truck (pickup or big ass semis) that didnt either come factory with them or have aftermarket ones available
The Transtar is one of my favorite trucks. Possibly my most used truck even. I found that often it only struggles if you try to traverse a muddy path multiple times than it becomes much harder unless you reset the tracks you made prior. For example the logging area on Black River Michigan can be handled once with the Transtar without too much trouble, but if you try the same path again without resetting the tracks you made than you may get stuck a lot more easily, and there is nothing to winch to.
@@Vimpmeat Yeah that logging area can really suck, I remember with the Ford, getting stuck and having the rock the truck back and forth to get it free
Congrats this was a fun series to check out from time to time.
@@cmgtbone Thanks a lot
The transtar has been really useful for me in hard mode, as its a free truck in the early game, good video i shall say
@@The_Canadian_Railfan Thanks very much. Yeah the Transtar is really fuel efficient. Regret not using it myself in my old hardcore play through years ago
In Snowrunner predecessors (Mudrunner and Spintires) original (non mod) maps had many roads which were mostly mud pits, but there were also small forest roads without much mud. This gave chance to all offroad incapable trucks to be optimal for work.
finally i found another highway trucks enjoyer , i love using them , and btw the "swamp" in smithville dam is completely crossable as well ( only needed to winch once whilst using gmc raised suspension and diff )
Ahh that's good to know. As I stream this kind of playing, I don't want to use a lot of time crawling 😂
Equal opportunities Snowrunner trucker!
I respect the no diff lock truck except the Western star NF because it's too big and unwieldy with the 2 dead axles
I cast my vote for the Transtar for the king of Alaska!
The WS57x is another monster of a truck even when it was just RWD. I was actually a little concerned when the devs gave in an added AWD to it, since it might have messed with the driving dynamics of that truck (I'm yet to try it out since the addition).
@@lttomparis 57x is definitely a monster. 4wd makes it a beast. One of my favorites for sure. Over 800 hours
Now that is playing in hardcore mode, no just some set rules on a NG+
I use them all and drive every truck in this game as long as I get some pleasure by doing so, but I have zero reasons to use a worse tool for a job that requires a fine tool. So it's not that they are useless, but there is no other point to keep using them on difficult tasks unless if you are looking to challenge yourself.
@@kodaiyoung Well that is what I did, as in, beat the base game with trucks that don't have AWD or Diff Lock
@@DecPlays_ A true hero indeed. Also when using these trucks that lack awd, I like to use the fine tune gearbox because it helps a lot to control throttle and you don't have the extra fuel consumption penalty.
The highway truck on smithville dam is really good on that map, nimble for the hill curves and quite quick
@@123dodo4 That's the Transtar 4070A
@@DecPlays_ yeah!, thats the one. I was running out of trucks to be flexible on multiple maps so i decided to just use highway trucks.. turns out it was efficient to get from point a to b multiple times. Alot of times if there's a mud just go to the grass route near the path you are using and you'll still be able to zooming
@@123dodo4 Exactly! Why go in the mud if it's easier to go around 😂
I love using the transtar in alaska and in canada.
Its just more paved road and its less muddy
@@justinsmusiclab5685 loaded up the right way, it'll get through mud. Did most of Taymyr with the Transtar
Small crane also add some weight to the truck! ;)
@@jozefputirka1137 Yes this is covered more in Pt2 where I show comparisons between trucks with different arrangements. The small cranes add the weight to the front axles which isn't ideal for RWD trucks
I made at least 12 videos using the 4070a Transtar I made the videos as a foot in my own mouth because my friend loves those highway trucks happy to say after making my videos I’m more impressed with it
@@pomosstream3202 Yep, not every truck drives the same way and AWD and Diff Lock aren't as crucial in some maps
I loved watching your taymir Journy, i wish i knew about you earlyer
@@deadbread3818 That's alright. There's plenty more to come!
Nice Works, now we know where we drives these (truck)
now for the final boss beat Kola Peninsula and Amur on hardcore mode using only highway trucks
@@defender1238 with my current save it wouldn't be too bad. The only cost is fuel
@@DecPlays_ well then do it im pretty sure im not the only one who would love to see such videos/streams
@@defender1238 Unfortunately I cannot at the moment as I'm away for work. There is a plan to continue and just see how much of the game I can complete without AWD and Diff Lock 😂
i heard about using the pacific 512 was possible, even without all wheel drive and it went so well! It's a lot of fun using rear wheel drive only, i'll test the Transstar!
The P512 has OP tires
Yeah the P512 had been recommended as it can be driven as no AWD Diff Lock but as Vlad mentions, it's tyres are pretty good. Compared to the Transtar, there will be a big difference unless you purposely make them drive on the same tyres
@@DecPlays_ which you can't do without file modding.
@@DecPlays_ Thanks for the infos, yeah that explains a lot. PF512 tires seem very very good. i'm 1009 hours into the game, never driven the transstar before. i am at scandinavia lake map right now an driving the transstar, lot of good road, seems to work :D i'll see
@@DecPlays_ the steering of the transstar is very good, fun to drive with the 8 speed high range gearbox. the fuel consumption while towing is moderate too
It bounces around too much, like a toy car. 🚗
Thanks for the video!
just go in the files and change the awd and diff to default and diff always
How did the minicrane effect the performance of these two highways trucks in these scenarios?
Or did you just use a seperate crane truck for loose cargo tasks/missions?
@@J.A.P_8950 Like it does to all trucks, it depresses the front wheels so I use it sparingly. Part 2 shows side by side comparisons of the trucks with a few different load outs so you can see the differences side by side
@@DecPlays_ok cool I saw that after watching part 2. I have been avoiding the crane on the transtar also because it causes my front wheels to wobble just like the 49x.
@@J.A.P_8950 nice 👍
I would say they are just as capable, used properly in the right hands, these trucks still can find a way into the world of snowrunner
As SD10ne will say
It's better to try things out for it will be boring
@@VINNICENTE I would say they're very capable having completed the base game with them
Dollar plays even used Ford clt and transtar in his snowrunner videos he litteraly loves them. Because of terminator, not just that but he kept using them even in the most dire situation
So you mean if I have a controller I should use them to drive instead of the keyboard
You'll have more control with a controller compared to keyboard
😊😊
The highway class IS useless. . . .reason being there are always form the start of the game better options, the only way i use highway trucks are as portable fuel stations or service spots by using fuel and repair addons and trailers.
Can highway class trucks be used? YES
Should or will anyone use them? NO
I really wish the devs put some effort into rebalancing/revisiting/improving or even nerfing all the vehicles and addons in the game.
@@SHAdow98V By your description alone, that implies they aren't useless as you're using them for fuel and repairs 😂. The Highway Class also contains the GMC 9500 which is very much not useless as it has a lot of power and it has AWD and Diff Lock.
The journey through the base game with the Ford and Transtar is all there to be seen, so clearly they're not useless. They just have to be driven properly playing to their strengths.
I think the balance across the trucks is pretty much spot on apart from a few outliers. It's more that the tyres arbitrarily vary within the same sets of tyres.
Tyres make or break a truck, not the class that it is in.
