  • Buckpasser (1963--1978) was an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who won nine of his eleven race starts for international record winnings for a two-year-old of $586,090. He was leading broodmare sire in 1983, 1984 and 1989.
Buckpasser was a bay colt that was bred and owned by Ogden Phipps and foaled at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky. He was by the Horse of the Year winner Tom Fool, and his dam was the stakes-winning mare Busanda, by the Triple Crown winner War Admiral. Busanda's second dam was the Blue Hen broodmare La Troienne (FR). He was a half-brother to several other horses that included the stakes-winners Bupers (won $221,688) and Bureaucracy ($156,635). Buckpasser was inbred in the fourth generation (4m x 4f) to the French racehorse and an influential sire Teddy.
Racing official Dr. Manual Gilman said of him, "Generally, every horse has about a hundred faults of conformation. I would defy anybody to pick a flaw in Buckpasser." Renowned horse painter Richard Stone Reeves said, "Buckpasser was the most perfectly proportioned Thoroughbred I have ever seen." Only two horses, Secretariat and Affirmed, have since been "in a class with Buckpasser".

I remember while running in a gym class in Dearborn ,Mi. in 1967 which was right next to Detroit, that 4 of us would yell out which champion they were, one was Kelso, another Buckpasser, my best buddy was Damascus, and I was always Dr. Fager. Man, racing sure was something back then. I seriously doubt the 16 yr.old guys nowadays could recall 4 great champions today.

Buckpasser often gets forgotten as a great thoroughbred as Dr.fager and Damascus got all the press, but dam this horse was very good.

Real race fans have a thirst for knowledge & go beyond the time they became racing fans, & look back @ the history; and upon doing so, they don't forget that BUCKPASSER was a "true" staying superstar, compared to the Breeders Cup Championship "max 10F era: He won what used to be
the Championship race, the JC Gold Cup @ 2 Miles, before it was
shortened to 1 1/2 Miles (12F), & reduced again to 10F a few years after the invention of the B. Cup: people try to elevate those horses above BUCKPASSER & horses of that era; unless the Breeders Cup adds distance to the Classic, there is no comparison to a horse who won 15 races in a row, 13 as a 3-Year-Old

It's too bad that two of War Admiral's best grandsons, Buckpasser and Hoist the Flag, never got to be in a Triple Crown race due to injuries. Fortunately, Buckpasser was able to recover and continue racing. Two of War Admiral's best sons, Blue Peter and Mr. Busher, considered to be two of the best two-year-olds of 1948, also never got to race in a Triple Crown race. Mr. Busher due to a career ending injury and Blue Peter, possibly due to whatever illness he had when he died. Eventually, two of War Admiral's descendants, Affirmed and Seattle Slew won, but, it would have been nice to see if one of his sons or grandsons could have done it. In terms of Buckpasser's grandsons, 1) Silver Charm seemed to take after him, in some ways... like not wanting to win by much. Loafing, if he got ahead too early in the race. 2) Spend A Buck won the Kentucky Derby, but, then didn't race in the Preakness or Belmont. Spend a Buck won the May 27 Jersey Derby race against Creme Fraiche (who won the Belmont the next month). 3) Easy Goer and Touch Gold both played the role of Triple Crown spoilers, their respective years.

Correct; when u read about BUCKPASSER & u see him appear in SILVER CHARM's pedigree, u immediately realize where his trait to look a horse in the eye, dare u to go by, & "re - break" came from: the S. Anita, Kentucky Derbies, & Dubai World Cup are 3 examples

I was at Hialeah for the Flamingo Stakes in March, 1966, won by Buckpasser. Too bad Graustark was scratched from the race and never raced again. That would have been a great match-up to see in person.

Chris Schenkel w/ the Voice - Over: didn't know he covered horse racing, but when u break it down, beyond Jack Whittaker, CBS had a team & it makes sense Schenkel had the versatility to chip in & do some pieces; a great voice commentating on a great horse

Hoist the Flag never lost a race unfortunately he was horribly injured and by a miracle Dr's kept him alive.Had he not got hurt imo,he would of won the TC in 1971.

That's been the belief & I certainly agree it's likely: if the importance of the T. Crown was more established @ the time, MAN O' WAR's owner would have run him in the Ky. Derby & it's hard to imagine him losing & not be the
2nd Triple Crown winner: The1st TC Winner SIR BARTON was recognized retroactively after the term was coined by reporters, recognized & solidified as a series

It's not that easy to win the Triple Crown. Three tough races in a five week span, with fresh horses always entered in the latter two races, makes the task all the more daunting. Look at the top horses who won the first two races and lost the Belmont (Tim Tam, Carry Back, Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Smarty Jones). Other great horses lost the Derby then won the last two races (Nashua, Damascus). Anything can happen in horse racing. This is why there was a 25 year gap between TC winners (1948-73) and another 37 year gap (1978-2015). I'm not willing to concede a TC to any horse, including Hoist the Flag, as good as he was.
