  • A sequel to Coimbra? Oh wait it's just the same designer and artist and publisher, but nothing in common with the other game. OK, fair enough, so what can this offer............oooooh those are some nice books.......

    Your review format is really well structured! I don`t know any BG Reviewer who does this better. Plus, great that you`re supporting BG RUclipsrs in the making!

    I just watched your review of tekhenu. You talk about the games very clearly and give good points about the good and the bad. I get a good idea if its somethin for me. Things like playtime and setup time and if its easy to teach. Really like that.

    Played this one on the weekend. Really enjoyed it. One of those games you want to play again to try different combinations. But also the next game will be different because of the variation in profesors and track, etc. for me it’s a solid 8.5.
    Really didn’t know what to expect from it. But the theme and game play took me by surprise in the best way possible

    Thanks for the review! Yea I have to say I love Coimbra but this somehow didn’t do much for me when watching many play throughs. Would love to try but in no rush to buy.

    Such a good point about referencing the rules book often. Ugh! That’s the most annoying thing. Thanks for sharing.

    Great review, hope to try it sometime before adding it to the collection. I enjoy Coimbra a lot. This review format is excellent. (have you considered a small side table out of the shot? 😂)

      Thank you, what do you mean by side table, what to hold the game on?

    The iconography is my biggest complaint with Coimbra. Sad to hear it's not great in Alma Mater. Thanks for your thoughts.

    I don't like the research track. The difference between being first and last is huge, and in general I don't dislike games that reward good play. However, the actual difference between first and last in terms of player performance can be minimal. I've see games where a person was ahead, then late in a round two players ended one space ahead and one on top. This means they were one space behind first, but still in last place which has major repercussions. If this happens mid-game, you are basically out of the game for being one space behind on the research track.

    • @TheBrokenMeeple
      @TheBrokenMeeple  3 года назад

      Agreed, it's a crutch in the game that hurts it more than boosts it.

    • @eMpTy0911
      @eMpTy0911 3 года назад

      @@KissellMissile I disagree here. Yes it's great to be ahead in research but you have have to commit resources to get there. If you just get ahead of other players with minimal resources thats well played and therefore should be rewarded. On the other hand if you commited a lot of resources to take the first spot but didn't have the awareness that another player can easily surpass you again that round it's not a good play and you are rightfully "punished". It's absolutely viable to ignore the research early on if you use your resources effectively and there are plenty of ways to advance on the resource track later on if you want (also don't underestimate the bonus income).And you are not out of the game if you are behind on the research track!

    • @KissellMissile
      @KissellMissile 3 года назад

      @@eMpTy0911 The problem is that the punishment for being in last can be much greater the actual disparity in resources spent between 1st to last. You are not necessarily out of the game, but it entirely depends on if players buy any of your books, which they are less likely to do. If they do not in the middle rounds, you lose actions getting money and potentially miss the ability to pull off combos that get you back into the game. It is entirely possible to be minusculely behind on the research track in a middle round and not be able to recover.

    • @eMpTy0911
      @eMpTy0911 3 года назад

      @@KissellMissile This is simply not true. While I agree that the research track is strong it is absolutely possible to win while being last in research the whole game. Being last in research comes with 2 problems:
      1.other players are less likely to buy your books --> less income
      2. you compete with the other players to get books from the players who are 1st/2nd in research in order to get the best students
      However there are options to mitigate both problems. Some examples:
      - money enginge thats based on income students rather than your display
      - money engine that is based on bishop modifiers
      - get professors to raise the value of your books
      - get a book discount for students
      Of course you cannot simply switch to such a strategy halfway through the game. Ideally you need to plan for this when drafting the setup cards and your starting chancellor.
      It also depends on the setup. There are research cards that make it A LOT cheaper to advance late and there are some that make it more expensive. There are glory tiles that require x milestones.
      If your strategy includes fighting for the top spot of the research track and you then fall behind, of course you will struggle to recover. But this is how it should be, right?

    Great review. Too bad I haven't watched it before buying Alma Mater.
    I mostly play at 2 players with my girlfriend, and the economy doesn't work well at 2 players. At 3 and 4 players, you buy books from other players and they can buy yours, the money is going from players to players, really cool.
    At 2 players, you can buy books from Ignatus (the bot) but the money goes OUT of the economy, and he never buys books from you. The dynamic is really different from a 3 or 4 players game. Disappointed...

      I just got it...the front page of the rule book says....”During the early 15th century, universities were established to challenge the influence of religion on academics studies”....this is contrary to what happened. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_European_universities The universities were created by the church to advance research and knowledge (and probably control it). There was the introduction of renaissance humanism in the 15th century, but these were religious people too....not trying to challenge the influence, but more likely to extend it.
      My point is, churches find their way into Euro games with a historic theme is because it was a big part of the history but this statement on the front page is revisionism.
