I think it's timeline--dystopia and villains in movies have an arc and a series of highlighted events in a course of an hour or so in movies and ~10 hours in a show. Whereas in real life it's a slow boil over the course of several years or even decades. Like that analogy about the frog in the pot of boiling water.

So much potential just thrown out because he really wanted to have crazy numbers for everything. She won’t admit it but she suffered to be on this thing. Not fun watching it basically squandered for week after week.

You do realize how by taking away the stakes and danger you can make most of these into normal games, right? Hunger games became a giant example of this, especially on video-games. If you're shooting a youtube parody of a show, it should be obvious you won't be adding the "deep sociological aspects" in those 15-30 minutes

They could have had cutaways to people who were in future episodes so you can get to know them and watch as they overcome the challenges, but still never knowing exactly which episode they are going to be eliminated. Knowing a memorable person is making at least to episode 5 will keep you watching to see what happens to them
Watching the show actually overstimulated my mind, never had that happened before. It has 2 second camera changes, some kind of noise happening every second or two, bright colours. It was actually brain rot.
I’m pretty sure the main problem with making the human element and the personal stories of the contestants a bigger part of the show is the simple fact that there were 2000 people to start out and there’s still hundreds of contestants after multiple episodes. I’m only partway into episode 3 and I think we’re still in the “let’s get this down to enough people that we CAN tell stories” phase. It’s MrBeast, they had to go Big there were too many people.
Much like his youtube videos, this show seems to hinge on the idea that bigger numbers and more money spending results in a more entertaining thing, rather than focusing on what makes the lower budget alternatives compelling to begin with
The thing about MrBeast’s videos is that most of them are (evidently) scripted, which sets them apart from TV shows. When real winnings are involved, TV shows must adhere to strict regulations. On a podcast, MrBeast even discussed how this shifted the entire approach for his team, probably one of the reasons why the games seemed so dull in comparison.
Gonna be mildly contrarian and suggest that Jimmy is a fundamentally decent person who ended up the captain of a runaway train because he was so good at running the little train at the zoo that shuttles families to different exhibits. He's just in over his head. He was so obsessed for so long with how to make the perfect RUclips video that he's forgotten how to think outside that box. He had that little Zoo train and it was the best little zoo train of all time and everybody loved it. How hard could it be to run a full sized tr-wait what are all these buttons for.
