Fan Zhendong played too predictably for a lot of the game. His short-stroke-close-to-the-table tactic was not consistent enough. Too many times he made errors on off-the-bounce shots. Liang very effectively used long serves to force backhand to backhand rallies, which Liang won most of. Fan Zhendong started making service changes and implementing powerful shots during rallies, and this earned him a couple of games. However, in the last two games, Fan Zhendong wasn't able to effectively control the short ball placement as Liang was on fire from the backhand side. He made so many backhand winners and effectively overpowered Fanzhendong. From a mental side, I think we can all agree we saw more fire in Liang's eyes. He was out there to win, and he was super focused. Throughout the match, I got the feeling that Fan was fending off Liang instead of attacking with the intention of winning. (Obviously, he wanted to win, but the desire to win seemed lesser.) I feel that we saw a similar situation in the WTTC 2019 where Liang accomplished a similar feat. He is determined to win and doesn't back down in big moments. When the big moments come, it almost feels like Fan Zhendong backs down. With the exception of WTTC 2017, when he played his heart out with Ma Long, I haven't seen him rise quite as high to the occasion. Maybe it's because he's generally so good that opponents don't force him to play those clutch situations, so he hasn't cultivated that level of mental toughness when matches end up becoming close. Anyway, the point isn't to take away from Liang's achievement, as he deserved this win every bit, but I think for someone with greatness like Fan, he needs to be able to step up more! I mean, this is the man we compare to Ma Long, and I believe he has the capacity to eventually surpass him. He's still young, so I definitely think we'll see more development as the years go by. Alec Wong Music - Not taking any credits away from LJK, I just would like to share my observation. The temperature in the arena caused every competitor sweating heavily. Unlike any other competitors FZD was absolutely drenched. This may cause dehydration and affect his performance.
I think it's time that we should expect that new generation dynamic duo for China is here. Earlier it was ML and XX and now it's FZD and LJK. I always knew liang ha the potential to be where he is now, it was just a matter of time that he would improve accuracy in his final shots( which he did here BTW), and play a bit intelligently (I guess, FZD is slightly more experienced than Liang). Over the period of time, they both will get better and become complementary to each other much like Ying and Yang. I really see great potential for Chinese TT in both of them.

This could have been the Olympic final. What a level. These backhand to backhand exchanges are lightning fast. According to me Fan's agressive playing style suits perfectly the style of Liang. Liang just loves that speed. The harder and faster you hit that plastic ball, the harder and faster it will come back. These two and Wang Chu Qin are my favorites for future world and Olympic titles.
LJK and FZD have better BH but they were forced to play more often FH or at least close to neutral by the coaches . I think it is forced on them because it is more suitable against foreigners to have slightly more aggressive forehand . LJK backhand was phenomenal in this match :)

First time I see Fan Zhendong being outpaced. He changed his style to being more passive at the end which was effective but not as effective as when Ma Long changes his style.
Liang Jingkun clearly has confidence against Fan, who he knows so well. Liang should play like this all the time! He moved better than before. No hesitating anymore. Fantastic performance showing what he is capable of.

Incredible how the Chinese championships level are so much better than WTTC and Olympic Games in Table Tennis. The players of medium level of China Super League like Chenhao, Xue Fei, Liu Dingshuo, Zhao Zihao can easily beat everyone of the another countries of the world. The same and more easily even in women's.
Jingkun's power made FZD unable to optimize his placements. Also, i've never seen Jingkun's forehand quite so on fire. I also agree, Jingkun looked like he wanted this win really bad. Power attacking ping pong at its finest.
LJK has improved and he prepared well against FZD. Such is the talent and margin of difference at the top tier of CNT men's team. The gold medal can go to any of the four. Let's see if LJK can beat WCQ in the final.

I definitely agree with you. I think Wang Chuqin is a very smart, controlling, and tempo setting kind of player, and this will likely pose difficulty for Liang, who is very much a power, speed, and rally driven player. With that being said, if he can force a fast tempo with aggressive openings and long, fast serves, he might have a good chance :)
It is so damn difficult to keep yourself on top. While FZD is trying to save his crown, LJ has everything for taking. No doubt Liang played amazing but the real test is being consistent and perform in international tournaments when the stakes are very high. It would be very interesting to see how long (if and when) he keeps himself on top. Tough day for FZD but I'm sure he is only shaken and not broken.
winning and losing within the National team is normal, it happens sometimes unexpectedly. The real test is international matches with different types of players, Zhendong is Gold medal champion, so is XuXin, MaLong, but they also lost to their own team members. Team members help them improve
Ma long was defeated by wang hao because he was his senior and lost to zhang jike because of his mental game. Now same is happening to fzd first ma long and now liang jingkun is there who has better mental game than fzd Man I was wishing so hard for fan to win. This is a sad day

I used blue for 5 years and orange for 8 years, blue is harder and returns ball faster, less dewell time, stronger, other difference are subtile. But once I get used to the blue, I can't use the orange ever just feeling it s a bit too weak, easily return ball down to net somehow.
LJK likes power hitting, but has difficulty with varying speeds. If FZD had used more strategic speed and spin variability, the game may have tilted his way.
FZD,Lin Gauyang have the exact same problem.Only Ma Long and Xu Xin can produce slow loops and have a good pushing game. Young players are only good at countering fast shots close to the table.

梁の方は守備的なドライブとブロックと攻撃的なドライブの使い分けがうまいから樊の攻撃をしのぎきってからのカウンターで点を取ってて、梁の方は下げられても前陣のちょっと後ろから打ちまくることができるから樊のリズムに対応できるのかもです。中陣の打ち合いはどちらも安定感がありつつ攻撃的なのですが、やはり前陣の打ち合いで点数がとれる方が勝つんだと思います。
