I have been using the Big Bertha 1996 with stiff shafts for years and love them. I'm getting older (65) and have had a couple of back surgeries. I certainly don't need these stiff shafts anymore. I was going to re shaft to regular shaft but the process was a PIA due to the bore through design. Found a full set on ebay with regular shafts very reasonable. I think I hit the jackpot! I really enjoyed this video, thank you!
I played for about 6 years with the 1 iron from this exact set, same shafts. It was brilliant, never had a wood of any kind in my bag for that time. Back when I could swing a club properly.
These were my set I started playing with for 5-6 years, they are great! Helped me really develop my game till I got my set of p790’s. Gave my old set to my wife who is out playing with me now
Got a set of Big Berthas during the last lockdown, along with yourselves, some other videos, and 3 months of living room practice they have had a massively positive impact on my game, nearly breaching 100 from about 125
Not to blow my own horn, but I've been alerting you to poor alignment issues for many, many months. So happy you are addressing this now ... this alone could cut your handicap in half!
I have a full set of those irons had them from new cost me over £1800 ..25 years ago still playing with them still look like new cant find anything betterlove hem
Did you watch the titlest driver video with Ebay... I'm not sure today's clubs are that much better. I still use my John Letters JLX. i do try new irons. Open to buying new irons. They're just not a patch on my JLX. taken me under 100, under 90, under 80 once and back above 100 more than once 😂
Ha! The reason that I watch is because you don't know what you're talking about, and it's the most informative station on the youtube! Cheers from Maryland, USA!
being relatively new to golf i love it when you do these retro reviews of random clubs of the past. id love to watch a video one day where you can find a company that would let you design and build your very own clubs
Brilliant Liam had a good old chuckle watching you hit my old irons, had them many years ago. Helped get my handicap down to 10, wish I could play to that these days. ⛳️🏌️
I bought my X12's in the mid 90's, my third set of clubs. My first was a set of Wilson's and we're used when I got them. Used them for sixteen years. Then, a brand spanking new set of Top Flites, mistake. Only used them for a few years. Big Bertha were recommended by a good friend, came am still playing them today. Love em'. Go to the range and get used to them, do another video, and then, like Tiger's iron's, pass them around the horn. Let's see what the boys can do with them? And if needed,do am sure YMJ can give you a lesson or two?😂😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍👍👍 Good video as always. And thank you and Joe, for taking the time out to entertain us like you do. Fantabulistic?
My father bought a set of these when they were brand new.....played them until this year....never complained once. Now his grandson is playing them. Great clubs !!!
Your right liam we don't watch because you know what you are talking about in regards to iron reviews I don't know why I watch but I wouldn't miss it for the world i never miss a video!👍
“Hey you fool!!”🤣🤣🤣 “I’m gonna get you sucka”🤣🤣🤣 great vlog again and hearing Joe laughing behind the camera says it all.”Beverly Hills Cocks” is now yours and Joes new team name!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Liam, has anyone ever mentioned to you to try aiming the clubhead first, then lining up your feet. You do it backwards by lining up your feet first, then the only time you put the clubhead behind the ball is when you are about to hit. This is where you are going wrong most times. You have to line the square clubhead behind the ball first, then line up with your feet. Hope this helps. Regards.
Just a MASSIVELY great vid Mr Liam. I'm likin the variety in video content, MASSIVELY. I think your old MASSIVELY "over the top" swing sneaks in periodically Keep up the good work. I'm a MASSIVE fan.
Back in the day these were callaways flagship irons, I went to a demo day, had to have them, they transformed my game, even back then they were £115 per club, I bought 10 irons, 2 - Sw..... this was in 1995.... Still have them stored away today, think I’ll take them out for a game now...👍🏻
I played the 2000 version big Bertha irons my freshman year of HS. Graphite shafts, they were easy to hit. As I got better I switched to steelheads and then King Cobra 2’s. My junior year I was playing about 3 handicap and I switched to some forged Titleist irons. Still never found another driver i like more than the 975J I played back then. Best driver ever for the technology and time period.
Mr Forgetful - try & remember your Zen lessons & you'd be able to do a proper test on the irons! I had a set of those irons in the 1990s & brought my h'cap down from 20 to 13.5 in 2 months - they were brilliant. I didn't notice the size of the heads, just watched the ball fly!
Nice one haha. I remember them, still see people knocking away with them so they must work for some. Liam Mr Barlow - The Doctor will fix your alignment issues in 2 ticks 😄👍
My dad bought a set new, and as we were golfing I misfit my 3 iron (blades) into the water short on a par 5 (hit it thin). My dad said try his 3 iron and everything he says is true about big and ugly but I smoothed his 3 iron over the green straight over the pin. He gave me the set and bought himself another. Only problem is there is ZERO feedback so you can lose your swing. So I went to Mizuno MP-32’s. Still, 25 years later, I put them back in the bag: swinging slower, not as grooved as I once was and I’m loving them again.
Couldn't believe it when I saw your upload, I just bought a set of these (3 to SW) last week off Gumtree for my son.£100. Absolute bargain 👌 He's loving them btw.
I remember these clubs! They seemed ridiculous at the time.. Released at the height of the 'Big Bertha' craze, which, in hindsight, possibly paved the way for modern oversized drivers and woods. I play the very similar Ping Zings to this day and I still love them, traditional lofts and all.
They very well might be the most forgiving....... but then again when you're swinging like a broken gate we'll never know. You just might have to have Lee give them a try on a few holes for us to give them a fair shake. 🤣😎
Liam. Last year got a set of Tmade burners. Oversized..cheap..the thing I can say is if your starting out or your a little in age. I like mine. The thing is you have to play them alott to me helped me out ...yeh takes a minute to get used to em. Prob if you played with em for a week maybe 2. You might say Yeh these sticks are not bad. Love mine best cheap club investment I've made
How did they go? Had a set of the 1996 ones a couple of years ago and lost my swing, hit they really short and got rid. Wish I hadn't because I was just having that off couple months that get you now and again
i had some Big Berthas second hand and when you hit one from the middle they wee beautiful.. sadly upgraded to some Yonex far less forgiving but still got em!! Another great video Liam. Give em to the Dr for a true test lol!!
Fame! Thanks for the mention. Those lofts are ridiculous if correct. The 6 is stronger than my old 4 iron which was quite strong for the 1970s. Difficult to get airborne. Lining up better, swing crap. Zen!
Great video, Liam and Joe! As for your alignment issue, one thing that’s helped me is dragging a line in the grass with the club, in line with the target, about where your feet line up. It’s visible enough to use, and it it may just be legal to do. Don’t quote me on that...
Hey Liam! Fred Flintstone called. He wants his clubs back! Seriously, Mate, I remember when those clubs came out over here in the States back in the 90s and we called them "Chunky Monkeys' then! We did!!! They were too big for me, and to be honest, my ego wouldn't let me buy them. I ended up with a set of Tommy Armour 845s. Great video! Hit 'em straight!
Great experiment, I love it Liam when you try all these different clubs and thing's. I am a Cambridge United follower. ( Was a big supporter in my younger days) let's hope we are both smiling Saturday night. Come on you U's.
Those are nice. If you think those are big or massive, I had a set of Tommy Armour TI 100 irons. Those were massive and hard to hit. I sold them then later bought a 1 iron in them and rebuilt it a graphite shaft. It was still unbearable to hit. Great video.
My first set of decent clubs were taylormade lcg irons back in the late 90's. They looked huge and were forgiving. I loved those clubs. Would be interested to see if they were as big as those Callaways
I doubt you could.find bigger clubs than them Liam!! Well done for having a go with them. You should take on Mr Barlow with them bet you would still beat him.
I had a set of the original Big Bertha irons, not those Great Big ones you have, they had plenty forgiveness without looking like breeze blocks on the end of a knitting needle!! Think you got into your own head with the looks putting you off, but as you said, if you don`t like the look, its hard to trust them and just put your normal swing on the ball. I had 3 through 9 irons and then got myself some wedges I liked, took loads of shots off my game! Glad to see you have found a putter that is working too, at least for this month!
@Golf Mates. Great video as always, thanks. From my observation, it looks like your upper arms are coming away from your body a little too much. A golf tip i have applied and it is working wonders, is have the feeling you are swinging inside a phone booth. This swing thought helped me keep my upper arms connected to the body more and gives me ultra consistent inside out swing path and repeatability. peace love light brother and yes, the tares have been running amok for far too long now.
Another great video Liam !!! Don’t worry about the forgiving irons mate !! We all forgive you for the lack of sentences put together in this video 😂😂 keep it up !!!!! 👍
Liam you had yourself syked out before you even hit them clubs. Last summer I bought the lastest Big Bertha B21's 4-Aw with the RCH65 graphite shafts paired with the Cleveland CBX2 54°&60° wedges in steel shaft. I get feedback where I hit the face on good & bad shots. I admit on touch shots still getting used to them.
Great video guy's, I'm old enough to remember when these first came out and our club pro at the time trying to convince everybody that we should be playing these clubs. I don't think anybody believed him . The thing I remember about them was they were so heavy compared to the Wilson staff blades I was playing, I would have been exhausted just carrying them around....
Time to bring out my favourite training aid - basket and pool noodle. I used my ball retriever when I tried it. We are in lockdown in the province of Ontario in Canada until mid-May. When we are playing again, I will be using it again.
I have some Callaway Great Big Bertha Tungsten Insert Irons with graphite shafts (3-6 irons) …. Bought for 3 euros each from a charity shop in Spain 👍. They smash the ball miles and very straight. What’s not to like?
I have a buddy who gamed these for years. Not only are they crazy big but very strong lofted for older clubs and probably the most offset I've ever seen this side of Ping. LOL Had a single they put with our threesome a few weeks back who plays the old Tommy Armour 845s irons. I can remember a LOT of guys played them back in the day, probably second in numbers only to the Ping Eye 2s...
I'm about to sell my set of these. I also have the A/S/L wedges. I am going to keep the wedges and sell the 3-9 (possibly 3-PW depending on how much I like my new club's PW when it gets here). The wedges are brilliant, I've holed multiple shots from around 50 yards or further. So accurate and consistent. But for my swing, I do not find the irons as forgiving as advertised, based on the weighting of them. I've used cheap Walmart irons that had better weighting and therefore gave me more confidence.
G’Day Liam These clubs were the ants pants in there day but like trying something new can take time Got a suggestion for a video is the Moe Norman single plane swing which I have changed to I am 67yrs old and broke 80 for the first using the Moe Norman swing Mate give it a try cause when you get all elements right the ball goes dead straight every time Mate keep those videos coming Great content 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
At 8:18 your take away looks a bit flat and then on your down swing it looks like your right shoulder goes forward first and not down hence the 'Over The Top' feel - I think - What do you think ??
Most untrue statement ever uttered by Liam "I am a man of few words" 😁 The Great Big Bertha irons (all years) are great clubs. Let Mr B play with them. Bet he will love them.
Came across my first set of irons. I bought them in the late 90’ties for two bottles of red wine and they where outdated even then. I will take them out to the course and compare to my present set.
Liam - those golf clubs made the Callaway name in the golf industry. Absolutely iconic clubs!! You're right, they would be great for someone starting out or of a certain age eg; Mr Barlow.
Have you thought about using the Slazenger FAST irons Liam? They have massive backs on them and weights so you can aid a fade or a draw! I remember that Sam Torrance and Kenny Dalgliesh used to promote them on the old golf channel!!
They are gargantuan. Agree might be tricky near green but almost hybridesque size wise so ok for chipping round green not sure pitching. Bit Roberto Duran Hands of Stone
I've got a set of these girthy boys in my bag right now. I just started playing after a 15 year hiatus, was looking for something forgiving and cheap. Hearing you complain about the looks of them was absolutely hilarious, loved it. Funny enough my set was missing the 7 as well, had to track one down on ebay. Cheers LOL
as if it wasn't already a truism, we are shown again that golf is about confidence, and it is interesting that a set of shovels meant to inspire confidence have the opposite effect. Fun video!
I use these irons every time I visit the UK. They are fantastic. Possibly the best clubs I have used. Sadly they are my brother in laws and Covid has stopped me
I owned a set of Steelhead Big Bertha’s that I too agree with their size, was massive. I felt intimidated with anything from a German through to the wedges. The 4,5,6,7,8 felt great & I hit them well. But the lack of confidence due to their brutal size around the green put me off. My son’s friend plays with them now and he loves them. I now play Callaway X18’s and feel more confident with the entire set. Good bit Liam.👍
Interesting to see you think about going chunky, I tried it a few years back but now play P770s and handicap is lower than ever - it's all a mystery....
If there big and forgiving give them to someone with a high hcp see what happens great video again Liam love it when Joe bursts out laughing to keep up good work joe
if you played several rounds with these clubs, they would do well. i have the next model after those, '94 Big Bertha Iron 3-PW and i hit them as well as my mates playing with brand new top brand name clubs. I bought them new at the time and they are in excellent condition. Have fun
I have been using the Big Bertha 1996 with stiff shafts for years and love them. I'm getting older (65) and have had a couple of back surgeries. I certainly don't need these stiff shafts anymore. Still game my Big Bertha's, Tried everything but always come back to Bertha :-)
I have been playing them for 18 years! I love them!
Got a set of Big Berthas during the last lockdown, along with yourselves, some other videos, and 3 months of living room practice they have had a massively positive impact on my game, nearly breaching 100 from about 125
I bought a set of Big Berthas' in 2004 when they came out, loved them then and after changing the shafts to senior flex 10 years ago still love them.
Brilliant
Not to blow my own horn, but I've been alerting you to poor alignment issues for many, many months. So happy you are addressing this now ... this alone could cut your handicap in half!
The Callaway 'cottage loaf' on a stick! Great vid mate, keep doing what you do!
I have a set of 2002 big berthas. Re gripped them and they’re absolutely incredible. Got 4-pw and aw for $75 at a yard sale
Gamed these for a decade, still got them. The sparks off a range mat always draw crowds :D
I have a full set of those irons had them from new cost me over £1800 ..25 years ago still playing with them still look like new cant find anything betterlove hem

“Look at the size of that … it’s massive”! How many times have you used that chat up line Liam…? 😂
29 degrees for a 7 iron was insanely strongly lofted back then. That's what strong loft 7 irons have today.
Pro tip- shark fin hair cut makes you more aerodynamic and adds 2 yards carry atleast once per round. Great video Liam, keep up the great work.
Thanks for the tip
My father bought a set of these when they were brand new.....played them until this year....never complained once. Now his grandson is playing them. Great clubs !!!
Your right liam we don't watch because you know what you are talking about in regards to iron reviews I don't know why I watch but I wouldn't miss it for the world i never miss a video!👍
I'd love to see omp try playing with these and giving his review too... Great video again liam and Joe 👏👏
I’m looking at getting back into golf.
And I’ll be buying the Callaway VFTs.
When I last played, they were the best you could buy.
Played these clubs in the day. Amazingly forgiving!

I'm 61, just get them (BB 1996) for fun. Finally I am going to keep them for my retirements and recreational golf. Liam you are so enthusiastic.
Thank you so much enjoy

Clubs nearly as old as me!
I'd love to see an alignment video, it's something I really struggle with! Maybe Lee can help us out! 🤞
Great suggestion!
This video could be a great drinking game everytime Liam says massive you have a drink absolutely reeking by the end🤣🤣🤣
My dad bought a set new, and as we were golfing I misfit my 3 iron (blades) into the water short on a par 5 (hit it thin). Enjoyed the video, happy to watch more of these. Don't be too hard on your score, remember you didn't use your Driver or Woods.

My Big Bertha 1994 lob wedge was my favorite club ever. Super sweet from 60 yards in.
They're almost like a set of hybrids. And what have you got your 8i out on the edge of the green for when you've a pitching wedge?
Managed to pick up a set of these (3i - SW, very good condition) for £105 the other day. Can't wait to get out and give them a try.
How did they go? Had a set of the 1996 ones a couple of years ago and lost my swing, hit they really short and got rid. Wish I hadn't because I was just having that off couple months that get you now and again
For Alignment I've been using the same trick I seen josh doing and its helped more than I thought it would

aren't those clubs high lofted too? Which is why the ball flight is higher because the 6 iron plays close to a modern day 8 iron?
Got some x-12s and they are so comfortable to hit. Want new irons but would be like losing a loved one to change!
good man

I'm about to sell my set of these. I also have the A/S/L wedges. I am going to keep the wedges and sell the 3-9 (possibly 3-PW depending on how much I like my new club's PW when it gets here). The wedges are brilliant, I've holed multiple shots from around 50 yards or further. So accurate and consistent. But for my swing, I do not find the irons as forgiving as advertised, based on the weighting of them. I've used cheap Walmart irons that had better weighting and therefore gave me more confidence.
G’Day Liam
These clubs were the ants pants in there day but like trying something new can take time
Got a suggestion for a video is the Moe Norman single plane swing which I have changed to
I am 67yrs old and broke 80 for the first using the Moe Norman swing
Mate give it a try cause when you get all elements right the ball goes dead straight every time
Mate keep those videos coming
Great content
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I love hearing Joe laughing in the background cause i couldn't get past how many times you said theyre massive haha
Absolutely
Must like hitting the ball with a frying pan 🤣🤣 love the description "like a wellie boot with a stick in it" good vidio 🤗❤️
Glad you enjoyed it
Have you thought about using the Slazenger FAST irons Liam?
Good bit Liam.👍
good stuff
Interesting to see you think about going chunky, I tried it a few years back but now play P770s and handicap is lower than ever - it's all a mystery....
If there big and forgiving give them to someone with a high hcp see what happens great video again Liam love it when Joe bursts out laughing to keep up good work joe
Absolutely cheers!
Wow, could not believe the size of the top of the irons; like a girder on a stick.
Quite liked the look of the #3 iron though
Cheers
Lmao @ "they're like a politician, slimy" best one ever right there mate!!!
Solid entertainment Liam. Thanks for the many laughs. Deep thought? Afterall, we're talking about a Bolton man, aren't we?
if you played several rounds with these clubs, they would do well. i have the next model after those, '94 Big Bertha Iron 3-PW and i hit them as well as my mates playing with brand new top brand name clubs. I bought them new at the time and they are in excellent condition. Have fun
Thank you Jim
I had a knock off set of these in high school for a brief period before switching to the Tommy Armour 845 Oversize irons. Ah the good ole days!
Ok I'm playing with the model Callaway prior to that and last Sunday posted a 76. Like hitting 🧈
