I think the reason why so many people fall for these English cars is they are so easy to work on and get running. However getting them to run perfectly requires patience, and is almost an art. I'd swear they were hand built because everyone of them seems to have its own unique personality.
You guys are amazing. You pull stuff out that most people wouldn't think had any scrap value and you see the good in it and make it live again in some fashion. Because you do so much with so little, this is so much better than watching some super-star car designer and his $250,000 build. Keep up the great work. I was watching another channel yesterday and he drug a piece of cardboard over to crawl under a car and he called it a Carolina Creeper. I laughed because I've be under cars on carpet, cardboard and anything else.
Thank you for the kind words! Really glad you’re enjoying! 😊 Haha we use headliner material, floor mats, plywood or sometimes just dirt 😁😁 gotta do what you gotta do!!
Had a 71 MGB GT in 79 thru 85, wish I still had it. Was built for CA but I bought it in ID. Took off the CA emissions stuff, a lot of work, picked up the Weber set up for it and ran great. Raced it in the SCCA events and had a lot of fun. Saw a great GT with a Wankel in it, very nice, really fast. Used to see a few of the MGC's. Keep up the good work and keep a look out for that very special car to give to your daughter. You will blink and she will be that age. I found a really clean Mercedes 300D for my last daughter. Big and heavy, no turbo so not fast, great driver and she never wrecked it. It went to a new home and new dads daughter.
I have two years, nine months and 24 Days until I retire and getting a car like that to re-build is gonna be one of the first things I do in my retirement :)
So glad your saving a classic British engine Michael 😄 Rescue as much as you can off that old heartless reck 👍🏻 Still lovin what your doing in your yard 😆 So don’t change anything 🤣 Cheers Stevie 😎🇬🇧
Love the fact you put the bolts with the items you remove. Unlike the chap who helped with my wife's Figaro and just put all the parts in a box, brackets and all. Had to research the internet to find out where the parts went! That MGB is to far gone, at least you can strip the bits off that can be reused and send the shell to the great highway in the sky.
@@BudgetBuildz Thank you for that, got almost all the parts back on bar the metal timing mark that is bolted onto the timing belt cover, I have to remove the bottom pulley. Look forward to your next installment. Cheers.
I have W129 1980 Merc SL, it hasnt turned over in the last 7 years mainly as its in the UK and i"m in Thailand , but watching you has given me some ideas of what to do before i start the car up in a few months time, I did try to get it into Thailand but the customs wanted to charge 80% of the original cars price plus import tax plus VAT, it was too expensive, unless i stripped the car down and shipped it in as spares that would attract only 20% charges, The other problem was my Thai wife with a sexy car she thinks all the ladies will want to get into my SL, with me so she didnt lift a finger to help me , they can be so jealous at times, Great video i really enjoyed watching many thanks.
MGB 1800 twin carb engine, the most favoured engine for hundreds of Austin And Morris, Wolsely and Riley A60 cars used in British Banger Racing over the years (google it) but not mine, I used the A60 1622 engine fitted with WESLAKE racing parts from a WOLSELY 18/80 "S" type, a rare car in its self. With a bit of work and a good cam in it, that MGB "lump" WILL growl. good luck, lets see more soon... Thanks for the video, (Ian) .. UK
I've driven one of these in the far past. Fantastic 80 mph and a lovely sound with the top down. Sorry the car isn't worth saving - just so full of rot. It would be a massive job.
Ahhh, thought you could save that mgb, but safety first I guess. Please continue the rebuild on the engine, definitely would enjoy that. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to more rebuilds.
You were right on spot with the Westen Champlain imitation once you got done cleaning the valve cover. Can't wait to see the rest of this build and other ones you have going
Save as many parts off the MGB as you can and clean them up. There is a good market for usable 'B' parts. Just scrap the bodyshell. Or offer it for a very challenging restoration! Got to tell you there are people in the UK that would restore that wreck. Sad to see an old car finally have to go but you will save a few as well.
Well would you look at thaaaattt. Oh go ahed and LOOK at it. Just look at it! LMAO. Am I really the first one who caught (or commented) on it? Great reference. Great job on all of your builds. I really enjoy the fun you have with this. Not easy to find time in life outside of core commitments, so great to see you doing what you love with your ‘spare’ time. Keep on truckin’!
Haha glad you caught that 😁 thanks so much! Glad you’re enjoying! It’s a lot of work! Hopefully we can get a shop going soon, and make cars and videos our full time gig!
Haha Yeap! It’s awesome, it’ll pull the rustiest bolts out with ease and doesn’t break anything! Most of the time cleans up the threads extremely nice!
Yes, sadly yes. Just depends on the car and how it’s sitting sometimes. Some of my other vehicles like the F350 sat longer in worse conditions and are absolutely rust free!
Great stuff! I like the red rocker cover! I had an MGB in the 80s like this one and the gear shift feel is the best I have ever experienced to this day - shifter stick straight into the gearbox - nice and positive. It will make a great engine for a project - they have lots of torque and pull strongly, so they feel quicker than the BHP might suggest, particularly in something light! If I remember correctly the engines also respond well to tuning, so you should easily get over 100 BHP with it. Keep up the great videos! Best wishes
Well done Michael 👍 save as many parts as possible off the car before you scrap it 🙂 look out for a parcel in your PO box from the 🇬🇧 all the best Paul.
Look after that engine. When I started working on cars garages would give you two A series engines for the price of one, they were so common, from the 850 through the 1100, the 1300, the 1500 and the 1800.My local garage had a field in the back with twenty or thirty just lying around and I was always able to help myself to whatever pieces I wanted. Now if you try to buy one in reasonable condition they are worth their weight in gold.
If money was not a consideration, you can buy pretty much everything for the MGB, if you can find an older range rover you can drop the 3.5 V8 into these. SU carbs are still made and overhaul kits quite reasonable if it weren't the price of the postage, one chap I knew stateside converted his twin SU carb to a twin Hitachi CD and I heard dual Strombergs can be made to fit if you can machine the inlet manifold. The desirable ones were those with the Laycock J overdrives. Some NOS parts can be found from the Reliant Robin which had a lot of the MG/Triumph parts bin components like dials, indicator stalks etc.
I hope you have a fire extinguisher close by! Alway dangerous when trying to fire off engines with open fuel ! Can't wait for you to get back on the 911 . Thanks for the video Heath North Georgia
My old man used to have a Wolseley 24/80 and it has the “Blue Streak” Six (a B Series engine but modified down here in Australia as a six cylinder) and it used to be a common swap into these MGs in the 70s I think. Hence why a 24/80 is rare but a 16/60 is more common. Wether the handling sacrifice was worth it... hard to say. A bit before my time by a few decades!
Hey Michael, I have a 96 jeep Cherokee has no compression on number one cylinder I was told, just wandering if you might could take a look at it when you have time.
Thanks! Yeah got a bit going on. I realistically don’t hold any over the other. I’ll keep the same pace up with all of them. I’d love to finish our Porsche first but it needs far more than the rest of the cars! Most likely the Rabbit Pickup will be done first, then the little green car and then all that will be left is the Porsche 🙂 as long as nothing else comes along 😁
That's still a very rebuild-able B. You can get new floors and king rails. Heck, you can get new body shells for them and just swap the running gear over. Too bad they aren't worth the money it would cost. They just weren't that rare or technically interesting.
Great job as always. Too bad the 71 MGB was rusted away. Ive seen that on some of those mid to east cost MGBs. Here in California it nver gets that bad.
Haha 😅 they are a pain sometimes! I don’t throw anything out though...can’t you see that 😁😁 actually, honestly I can’t stand mess. That’s why I spent the weeekend cleaning and hauling stuff off! Just to get a bigger shop soon! Then I won’t have so much clutter 😊
Considering how long it had sat im the open The outer panels don't look to be in that bad of shape. Wonder what condition the sills and sub frame are in?.
Not everyone likes British cars but I love them. Too tall how tall are you? I'm 5'10" and not as skinny as I was when I was a young artilleryman, but I still fit in my Midget!

Wish u could work on my 71 mgb gt overdrive car. Changed to single Weber, coil, wires plugs and distributer. Darn thing will only run for a minute before it stalls. Remote fuel source. I've given up on it. Just sits in the garage
I’d love to help if can! There’s a few things that come to mind, it’s always hard when you don’t have something right in front of you. Are you running electronic ignition or points and condenser? As Thomas mentioned could be running to rich or to lean. Float may be hanging up, could possibly not have the fuel pressure needed. Maybe something is heating up and failing such as a coil or condenser? Does it start right back up? Also does it have a manual or electric choke? Could be running to rich once warm although the choke is still on, causing it to stall. Fuel, compression and spark is all you need! One of those isn’t right 😁
Day after driven 40 miles would not start. Did all the normal checks. When cold car will run for a minute then slowly drop power till it stalls. Did all the above over 2 years. Replaced with new moss down draft Weber and intake still same problem. First start great then runs like dung after that till it will not run. Heck we are in Portsmouth va. I'll trailer the guy down and leave him with you to play with. This is our second b no issues out of the other. Appreciate the response earlier. Great vids makes me want to push the old impala and 300d merc to the side and play with the b gt. Cheers
Ahhh rear engine mounts, got some flashbacks on why I will not change that rubber out again. If you could, let me know who you send the bottom end of the engine to, please.

True that! They are a trip to work on haha! Even putting carpet in there’s no second panel the same 😅

I think you need to see if the MGB engine would fit in the Nash Metro, maybe the B transmission too.
They’re nearly the exact same dimensions! Even the motor mounts are the same 😁 that’s why we went this the 1800 🙂
I just want to see that engine in the ''Metro'' and running!
We can’t wait! 😁
"Poor little car" is right. She still has a lot of good parts someone will want !

There is no slip shaft on the MGB gearbox. The drive flange attaches to the output shaft. I think the overdrive version is the same.
Absolutely 🙂 the slipshaft is midway on the driveshaft, but is frozen solid due to rust 🤷🏼♂️

You could take all those parts and build a right nice British rat trike.

It's a shame the MG was too far gone, maybe a few of its parts (if lucky) could be of use on another MG?
