Man that thing sure did sound smooth once Darrin was finished with all the tuning. Anyone who hasn’t ever worked with an old Aircooled engine has no idea how much fine tuning it takes. Darrins skills shine through in all the problem solving. Great job guys!
what a great trip through the rebuild, never knew that the valves should be adjusted every oil change or 3000 miles. Real pleasure watching a true craftsman show a novice how to do it right and also some tricks. Thanks for the trip

Thanks guys for using Zalex's engine test starting tools! Your engine sounds great and I'm so happy for you and Rusty! Troubleshooting that oil leak is exactly why we made this product because the same thing happened to me before. Swapping out parts and getting it to run right is so much more enjoyable out there in the open.
Thank you for making this amazing tool! It was easy to connect and really fun to use. I couldn't wait to flick the switch and push the start button. It was awesome! That is one tool everyone should have if they are working on engines.
When I was a kid growing up my father had two VW's. One was a 1500 air cooled engine, and the other was a 1600 dual port air cooled engine. The 1500 was the most reliable of the two, and it would go 140,000 miles before any engine work would be needed. The 1600 dual port was a lemon, and had to have a valve job every 30,000 miles. The 1600 dual port would also suck valves, and throw them through the pistons. We still had the VW with the 1500 engine long after the 1600 dual port was sold. As for the 1500 we had, I still see it running today. Our 1600 is long gone. I remember a friend of ours who was a VW mechanic come over to our house, and work on the 1600 engine. This video brings back memories.
I can still hear Heinz my VW mechanic telling me to keep those valves adjusted when I was 16...50 years ago! That old ‘58 was turned into a dune buggy. Great video!
After my 62 ragtop was totalled three times, bought back for 50$ each time from insurance company, it became a cut down Baja. That was in '71. Miss that tough old bird.
Well CT Nice to hear the engine is running, The next project must bring it back again in Rusty the Bus. after the rebuilding of the bodywork Congratulations on your choice from the mechanic. Greetings from HCS.
I overhauled my 61 bug engine in high school, 1969. Ordered big jug kit (1700?) from J.C.Whitney, and manifolds/linkage to add dual carbs. Of course headers with glass pack muffler. Made a world of difference.
Firing order was wrong the first time on the big cap distributor, 2 and 4 looked to be flipped on the distributor cap. Very clean build! Can’t wait to see it in the car
Yes, you might be right. I think we got that figured out later in the build. I was distracting him with the filing. Thanks for watching! =) Stay tuned form more!
Great! The 40 is a great motor. It's great that you used original dizzy, carb and fuel pump. That's how they were designed. Good to run an oil bath air cleaner and a heat riser. Also good to use thermostat sys. I would loose the fuel filter due to the fact that the stock pump has one built in. Cleaning the fuel screen is done at oil changes. Flush the gas tank and clean the screen in the tank too. You will never regret doing that. Cheers and enjoy!

14:32 when I adjust valves, I put the pulley on the TDC mark and pop off the 2 valve covers. On one side (like the one they first adjusted) there will be 3 closed valves (in this example, both for cyl #1 + the intake on cyl #2), so I adjust those. On the other side of the engine, 1 valve will be closed (again, in this example, the exhaust valve for cyl #4 will be closed) so I adjust that as well. I turn the pulley 1 full rotation and adjust the remaining valves. Easy peasy.
I helped a good friend of mine rebuild the 1500cc motor on his '65 bus after it dropped the #3 exhaust valve, which was a common thing that happened in VW Buses, and it was such a simple thing to fix too. all that was needed to solve that problem was to do 2 things- put air scoops over the rear louvers to draw in more cooling air, and to put on an after-market oil cooler that had triple the cooling surface and did away with the cooling tower that basically blocked cooling air to #3 cylinder.
Thanks brother! It is a major milestone in Rusty's build! I feel like the engine is the heart. Once the heart is beating the rest will follow! =) Darrin is a life saver!

It should be a 30hp for a '59, but that got lost after dropping a valve. Great advice from you. I hoped to see the throttle ring at work, but I guess you guys don't need/like thermostats.

Hey Jamie! Thank you! It gets me pump up even more when I read comments like this. I can't wait to get back out win the garage on work on Rusty! Stay tuned for more!
@@CTmoog Great!!! It gets me pumped to see your videos! That's what I love about the VW community - For the most part, everyone helps others & encourages others! Have a great day!
Nice to see Rusty's engine come alive with vw Darren's help. Now I hope you will be able to get help to rebuild Rusty's chassis rather than just pulling apart and ordering panels without welding them.
HAHA! Yes, I couldn't do with him. He was a life saver. Metal work coming soo. Stay tuned!
Respect to the old man, I've never seen a better mechanic that re-store a VW motor than him! I loved it it was challenging but the man never gave up! He's a genuius!
Thanks, Darren. I'm just starting to resurrect the 34hp engine that was in my Beetle - well it's on the garage floor actually, partly dismantled. It should be a 30hp for a '59, but that got lost after dropping a valve. Great advice from you. I hoped to see the throttle ring at work, but I guess you guys don't need/like thermostats.
Hey Dave! Darrin did a great job on Rusty's engine. I'm going to restore the heater boxes at some point and try to install them with the thermostat later in the year. Good luck with the 59. Have you been on The Samba? There is a ton of great information there. Thank you! Stay tuned for more!
@@CTmoog Luckily I got a couple of NOS 34hp heater boxes decades ago. Yes I've dipped into The Samba for quite a while, more for the Type 3 stuff, but I'll be looking for Beetle info now I've got the resto underway. It was my first car, bought in 1966 from vacation job money as a postman!
Nice job Darrin and CT
Thanks brother!
It sounds nice. You've now got a good motor there. One step closer to a driveable van...
Yes, it sounds really nice. Can't wait to put it in Rusty! Thanks man! Stay tuned for more! =)

There's always a snag. That what make the video a good one.
6 volt was replaced in all cars for a reason I guess. Enjoyed all 3 episodes. Sh#t always go sideways in a project it would seem. Gremlins Haha. Sounds and looks really nice. Super to have someone with that much knowledge share VW knowledge
