Alan the man who died was my husband Paul. He was a man who loved the outdoors and sadly he and his friend took a chance that day ( although both experienced walkers) and that is why he will never be coming home to me and our daughters. The only tiny bit of consolation is that he died doing what he loved in a place he loved 💔
Sad to say that I witnessed the fatality you discuss . I was one of of four people on the sharp edge when the accident happened. I literally saw the poor guy fall, he was around 30 yards in front of me at the time. The vision will stay with me for the rest of my life. I don’t think that he slipped, It looked to me that he lost his balance as he simply fell backwards, having no ability to stop himself. Sharp edge, is a great climb if you have the nerve and some scrambling experience, but when it’s wet, just forget it. Hats off to the mountain rescue team who were simply amazing.
Wow mate. I passed a couple hours after and this tragic accident hit me hard. Keep safe out there! I’m sure you understand the risks even more so now. Thanks mate Al
I have had several friends who have died whilst carrying out their passion for the mountains. i also spent two years from 1998 to the new year 2000 with the Amble-side Mountain rescue team. Your above vlog struck struck a deep cord inside me and brought a tear to my eye from memories experienced over the years.
I was unsure whether to mention it but I really feel people need to know that the mountains are a serious place that need to be respected. You obviously understand this more than most and respect to you for your experiences. Thanks Steve.
I've seen all your videos and that's thd first time I've seen you like that and can tell it can't have been easy to keep it together. Proper top bloke mate, wear your heart on your sleeve. Take care buddy ❤
Thanks mate! I’m glad you are a hardcore watcher 😂. It’s just I constantly tell people to get outside I just hope people don’t take risks out of their comfort zone.
You complete spoon!! Fine Yorkshire lad. Thankyou for your touching tribute inspired by the hiker lost on Blencathra. Never be afraid to call it a draw to make it safely home. I did exactly that on the CMD Arete last Sunday. There will always be another day. Thanks for making us all stop and think, the mountains don't care about egos.
What a beautiful poem. I did sharp edge recently in perfect conditions but still found it challenging. You did a great job of highlighting how dangerous it is, some vloggers really downplay it.
Well to be honest I think that’s why it hit me. I’m always so full of positive energy and telling people to get outside and adventure but people need to know that there is a risk. Thank you Al.
THANK YOU for recognizing the loss of an amazing Person that, as you said was living life. Energies to his family! He soars today in the next adventure I like to believe!
Outstanding effort, love Blencathra. Respects though to the person who regrettably lost their life, and condolences to the family, a tragic loss in anyone’s book. I’ve been repelled from Sharp Edge twice, and not due to lack of confidence. It is not to be messed with, deceptively tricky even at the best of times. Still have a desire to do it, but it will need to be a belting day! Good to see Blue taking it in his stride ... great video, thanks.
Thanks for the video Alan. A very moving tribute to these special places we explore. Well done for taking time to share the important message that these natural areas should never be taken for granted, particularly when it comes to treating them with respect when it comes to safety for ourselves and others. My thoughts go out the family of the man and my gratitude to the mountain rescue teams that continue to put their own safety at risk to help others. Keep up the good work. Atb Michael.
Greatly appreciated Michael! I’m glad I could show the amazing mountain rescue and what they do. It’s all part of the Lake District and the adventures within. Take care.
Alan, so sad to hear about that chap, really brings it home as to how dangerous it can be out on the fells, I've been watching wildcamp vids on You Tube for years and I reckon this was the very best of them all,, brilliant insight in to how the weather can change and that the right kit is vital. Well done mate 👍
Wow thank you. I’m glad you understand it and the dangers out there. A lot don’t! I just hope it helps a few people make the safe decisions. Thanks again. Al
Just discovered you and Blue boy and I’m working my way through all you fabulous videos. Wise words regarding safety on the mountains, or anywhere in the wild. It should never be taken for granted and even the most experienced amongst us can be caught off guard in a heartbeat. Take good care of yourselves on your adventures and I look forward to seeing so more, with you and the fabulous Blue.
Welcome and I’m glad you’re enjoying my videos. It’s hard getting seen on RUclips so I’m glad I’m slowly getting there mainly from word of mouth. Definitely worth considering all the safety/risk factors associated. Thanks. Al
I love walking in the fells, especially in the Lakes, but as I’ve got older (now in my early 50s) I’ve become far more cautious with my choices. I really wouldn’t fancy Sharp edge now irrespective of the conditions. I do fully appreciate though that some people are completely unfazed by exposed ridges etc and I’m sure Alan is one of them. You’re doing a great job of putting out really interesting content Alan and I’m sure your channel will go from strength to strength. Keep up the good work and stay safe.
Wow thanks my friend! I think having kids made me be more cautious although I still have quite a high level of risk but I’ve spent my life doing it so my comfort zone is rather large compared to most people. Cheers Jon and stay safe.
My son and I have had Sharp Edge on our bucket list for years. We were in the Lakes last summer, and we were in the north eastern fells one day when the weather was really dry and there was no wind. Sharp Edge was on! So we finally conquered it for the first time last year - and I'm 68!
Yeah mate I won't do Sharp Edge, Striding Edge or Swirral Edge with the other half. She's been decent hiking up in the mountains (She's done Blencathra, Blease Fell over to Scales Fell), Helvellyn from Glenridding, Skiddaw via the zig zag path of doom, Dodd, Lord's Seat/Barf but I don't trust her footing to do something with an exposed edge like that as she's not the most 'stable' person a lot of the time in terms of balance. To the extent I insist on our walking single file (with me up front) down steeper loose gradients and the reverse going up. Keep safe mate and continue exploring the beautiful world of the Lake District.
That was truly amazing , absolutely loved it. Total respect to you for being able to complete that mountain and film it so well. Love all your vids and gear reviews. Really sad about the guy who lost his life doing what we loved. Much respect Atb Graham .
Hi Alan, This has clearly has had an effect on you and I am glad that you posted the video in this way. It has struck a chord with me too. Last week I had to carry out CPR with a few of my team mates to a gentleman who had collapsed. Sadly, he too did not survive. We carried out CPR for around 25 mins before advanced paramedics and ambulance teams arrived and took over and they worked for a long time before taking him to hospital. His wife told me afterwards that he had long covid since June of last year and was short of breath with heart palpitations. I too had covid that month and have been left with the same symptoms and it suddenly hit home with me and cannot help think, but for a trick of fate, it could have been me that day. Since watching your channel I have taken every opportunity to enjoy life and the outdoors but mostly sharing it with the ones I love. Please keep the videos coming with your love for the outdoors as evident as ever. Warm regards THU
Wow I bet that was quite traumatic and as you say it’s a big reality check when you think it could be you. I’m so glad I’ve added to your thought process to enjoy life more. This video adds to that feeling for me knowing life is short! Enjoy your time and enjoy your family. Al
My wife and I once had a close call while hiking in Utah. As a result, we rethought what our expectations were for our hiking and set some rules that we do not break. A personal rescue beacon was part of that rethinking. Also, the hike is more important than the destination. Once we hit a time limit, we turn around regardless. Always put your safety first. There is always another day, another hike.
Hi Alan, Well done with the compassionate way you started and your heartfelt poem. In the mountains you are only one slip away from disaster and sharp edge is not to be taken lightly. Excellent content as always, keep up the good work. Perhaps a few more collaborations will get you the subscriptions you deserve, like I did after your one with Chris at MCM.
I’m hoping I get the message across to be safe out there. It scares me seeing how under dressed some people are on a mountain in bad weather. I’m happy to get out camping with other RUclipsrs. I’ve a couple in mind. It’s a slow game building up subscribers but I’m hoping my subscribers will be a solid bunch. Thanks Al
Have done Sharp Edge a few times. The last time a few years ago now, it was damp/wet and actually did the bad step on my stomach.... Conditions were no were as bad as what you experienced.... Last time I was in winds like that was on Cheviot it blew me over and I ripped the knee in my walking trousers.... It's dreadful that there was yet another fatality....so sad. Deep sympathy to that person's family and friends. Thanks for sharing 👍
Wow, braver man than me. I would of stopped at Scales tarn and got myself back to The White Horse. Closest I got to Sharp Edge was a family camp at Troutbeck and the backdrop was Blencathra with fantastic sunset behind it but most of the time it was hidden in thick cloud aka Claggy. It looked dangerous through binoculars. Glad you highlighted the dangers in this video and did it with extreme caution. I am massive fan of your adventures and glad you share. That go pro has had its 1st test. 😂Keep up the good work Al
Yes sharp edge isn’t for many! I’m glad the dangers come across so hopefully people will have a better understanding of the place. The GoPro will definitely get used! 😂😂😂
Spent some time in snowdonia a couple of years back with 80 mph winds and was so grateful to be well trained and have decent kit. So easy to underestimate how powerful nature can be. Condolences to the family and friends of the person who died but a great video as always and hopefully goes someway to show people you can never be too prepared.
I did sharp edge a few years back at 51, it's very exposed, but didn't find it too bad, the stones there are polished by all the use it gets, I definitely wouldn't do it in bad weather, rain or wind, if anyone wants to try it, I would recommend it first as a day hike, with a very small pack, in light winds, and definitely in the dry, great vid as usual mate, but personally I would of turned back at the start of the ridge, it's always better to live to fight another day , stay safe matey 👍
In the dry it’s not too bad but as you say the polished rocks in the wet are really slippy. I’m glad I got to show the dangers to people though. I totally love being out in it all but understand the risks. Thanks mate.
Wow Alan...so pleased you and Blue got back safe. I'm so sorry for the person who got into difficulty, very sad. As always, you are a great guy who puts such a lot of effort into bringing us back a top class video . Although sat at home warm and comfy I really got a feel of the cold and brutal conditions you had to battle with. I just love the relationship you have with Blue ...any chance of a video sometime of how you got him and how you trained him so well, it is just fantastic to see .. In your words "awesome "... Until the next video Take Care and Stay Safe 👍👍👍👍😊 and a big hug for Blue 😘
Wow thanks for your kind words. A video on Blue and his kit is definitely something I’ve thought about since he is the main character 😂. I’ll have a think 👍
Jeeeesus!! You are a braver man than me Al, very well done and nice touch for the poor fella that passed away. Take care and thanks for sharing another amazing video 🤙🏻
What you wrote and said at the beginning says a lot about you. Amazing. Watching you travel the “edge” was still harrowing knowing what had happened even though we, the viewers, knew you were alright. I can’t say enough about your videos…inspiring, engaging and just a great watch. Am going to be a happy contributor.
Thanks mate much appreciated. I’m just glad it shows that these risks are out there and accidents do happen but we all love to get out there and enjoy it all.
I've mentioned before how your love and enthusiasm for the outdoors really does comes across Alan, well on this occasion it really does come across how absolutely guttered you are for the loss of a fellow hiker ... So sad 😪 Take care everyone.
It’s hard for me because I spend my time trying to motivate and inspire people to get out and do these adventures. I just hope this video emphasises the dangers enough to help some people be safer. Thanks Kevin.
Yeah definitely. I’d love giving all the kids a knife and taking them into the woods to do some cool survival stuff! Most kids now a days have never lit a fire 🤷🏻♂️.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE I'm 48 now and I grew up in an urban area, but as kids we would seek adventure at every opportunity, building dens on wasteland, lighting fires that occasionally got out of hand , climbing trees to attach old rope we'd find and make swings, times were a bit different then but come school summer holidays myself and my best mate would dissappear every day and become Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn. You undoubtedly champion that spirit Alan and your audience are captivated each time, plus you can deliver the potential perils etc to the formative listening ear
Exactly my childhood! My dad gave me my first knife at 5 and we’d go off and light fires all the time. Kids don’t get out and do it now! I wish they did. Thanks again Kevin.
Awesome video Al with a reality check I am a novice wild camper and still taking every hike in the mountains slowly and Learning from my mistakes, but hopefully no major mistakes like that poor fella, Stay safe Buddy, Les.
I’m glad it comes across as a reality check. My videos are all fun and happy and I’m sure always will be but this stuff does happen out there. Keep learning mate! I will.
Can I just say, there's alot of these types of wild camping videos out there but yours stand out by not only your production quality but also you jovial yet serious attitude. Well done. The only creative comment I would make is it's way nicer to here the rain on your tent or the wind than hear any music over time lapse footage, in general bought music is. horrible and what you have is so much more in tune with your mission. 👍 anyways, keep up the great work.
Pffff.... here I am a year later. I'm so sorry for everyone involved and I really appreciatie your message, poem and advice. Stay safe . Lots of hugs from this Dutch woman (we don't have any mountains, so in awe and resoect to the vast nature across the Canal)
First did Sharp Edge when I was 16 with a friend and I’m now 62. In the intervening years living nearby has allowed me to do it many times in the dry, the wet and under snow and Ice. I always find wet conditions the most thought provoking because of the slape nature of Skiddaw Slate. I would recommend that first timers only give it a go when dry and relatively calm. Even in such conditions I’ve coaxed folk along who’ve become unsure. The point where last Friday’s tragic fall occurred is an accident black spot. Enjoyed your video but out of interest why did you approach on the right side of Glenderamackin Beck rather than the normal left - necessitating your near expensive leap across? Stay safe and look forward to more videos👍
Very good information! It’s definitely very slippery when wet. The mountain rescue were telling me that is the most common accident spot. Well noticed on the walk towards. I just hadn’t seen that stream before so fancied a walk up it. No one else would know that 😉 Thanks mate.
Brilliant stuff. I watch all your videos, being 80 years young it is all I can do. I have walked c2c four times and several other trails as well as having an obsession with the Lakes where like you I was always going. For two months per year the fells where my objective.. my body is worn up for such adventures now, I can only walk in the low valleys a few miles per week, BUT WATCHING YOUR STUFF brings it all back. Please keep it up just for an old fellow outside hill Walker---DJ
Wow you are definitely a legend! I’m impressed and so glad I can keep the higher peaks alive for you. I’m sure you have some amazing adventure stories to tell. Take care young man. Al
We attempted Sharp Edge a few years back in the sunshine although underfoot was wet. A few years before we'd done Crib Goch and we do Tryfan annually so we know our limits. We got to the sloping slate part, my Scarpas had been slippy all the way up, mostly on the worn shiny rock, we had a brief conversation and both didn't feel it was worth the attempt in those conditions. We turned back, descended a bit and went more north to ascend. We always trust our inner voices. @BUSHMAN and BLUE My tip over the waterproof trousers, always store them zips open so you don't have to mess about unzipping, removing gloves etc when they need to go on.
Definitely worth constantly assessing the situation and adapting your route/goal to keep safe. Good lad! Good tip on the zips cos you only ever need them quickly 😂. Cheers mate.
Just recently got to your channel. I've spent so much time in The Dales but some of the spots you've wild camped have got me so excited for this year. Thank you mate. My lads will thank you for it too. Keep it going. Please.
Respect to you my friend. I once rescued a lone Walker from Sharp Edge. He confessed that I saved his life but I only did what any of us would do to a fellow Walker in difficulty. I know of a few who have met their fate up there. Can’t emphasise enough how serious a walk this is. Take care out there 👊🏼
Thanks James. There’s a massive chance you did actually save his life. Sometimes… often people are out there totally underdressed for the conditions. Im hoping people get a better appreciation of what conditions can be like. 👍
I wouldnt take my dog on a walk like that, plus your climbing it with one hand whilst vlogging with a gopro? I think perhaps you need to take some of your own safety advice mate to be fair 19:18 for example.. can you hand on heart tell me this is you being safe? imagine watching your dog roll down the cliff and then suffering with broken legs, yelping with pain while you just have to watch.. knowing that you created the situation in the first place, sorry if you think this comment is harsh, but you opened up the dialog by posting the video and talking about safety
Many wouldn’t take their dog but most of the time their dogs are very much unconditioned to these adventures and definitely are not under control. Blue and I have an exceptional trusting relationship and have being doing these adventures since a pup. I understand that people’s comfort zones are very different and people need to respect their own. At all times through this I was completely in my comfort zone with my dog and at no point felt unsafe. If you know Sharp edge you’ll also know I didn’t film any of the more technical parts because you definitely need your hands. I just hope people understand the risks involved from this video so that they chose weather to take on Sharp edge in accordance to their own comfort zone especially with their dog. Thanks Al
I personally think going up in those conditions on your own with Blue was irresponsible. Filming with one hand in the conditions on the edge was very poor. You were not also putting yourself at risk but also the mountain rescue. So when would it have made you turn back. Previously I have enjoyed your videos but personally think this was putting yourself in danger as well as Blue and possibly the mountain rescue 😔
I actually didn’t film any of the parts that were higher risk. Also the filming I did was different to my normal as I said in the video I wouldn’t risk going past the camera for the shot and climb back down for it. Yes there is always a risk but at all times I felt confident and within my own comfort zone especially because I took my time and chose the safest route. Blue is under my control and we have a very strong trusting bond with our adventures. If I felt in an unsafe position I would have turned back as I said in the video with no hesitation. Thank you for your concern.
I don't think Al would ever put Blue in any danger!! One of the things I love about his more dangerous looking video's is how he always talks about safety first and his knowledge on the subject is clearly very high...
I went to Blencathra off the back of this Video yesterday mate and what a place. I’m a sh*t bag so I took a longer route coming up the hill behind Sharp edge then back down past the lake. I never had any plans to go here before seeing this Vid so massive thanks for the inspo fella 🙌🙌 I’ll be out in the tent soon hitting some of your spots too
Im bingewatching all your adventures from the begjnning as i used to do a lot of walking on dartmoor . You wear your heart on your sleeve. It must have hit you hard when that poor man lost his life. My condolences to his family and friends, and thankyou for once again highlighting the dangers. Keep safe. Big hug to blue.
What a cracking video. Still not a bad one yet. This one was very sad but also hilarious at the end, and also very informative. Best wild camping videos on youtube, by far. Keep it up Al. AMAZING.
Another great video. I came down Hall’s Fell Ridge a few days after a guy got killed coming down. It’s quite hairy with tricky footholds. His wife saw him fall from her route down Middle Tongue. These places must be treated with respect, and even then can catch out the most experienced. Keep up the good work. All the best from Chorley.
Was the exact same spot that I unfortunately witnessed a fatality during a winter quite a few years ago. A hairy place at the best of days. Thank you for your videos. Both of you. Best wishes
@@BUSHMANandBLUE it's such an exposed, unexpected, awkward angled slab. Lovely to read so many kind words on here to the family. Never underestimate the value of your videos. They help me massively, as I am no longer able to get out. All the very bestist.
Thanks Shane. I feel it more because I constantly tell people to get outside and do these adventures. I need to emphasise that there is a risk with it! Keep up the top work. Al
Thank you al for highlighting the dangers be safe up there we want to keep watching you and blue condolences to the family of the man who lost his life all the best george and elaine
New subscriber here. Not sure who I fancy more - you or Blue!! The one and only time I've down Blencathra, got half way over Sharp Edge and two women were frozen solid to the rock face in fear. We had to come all of the way back down and up the other side FFS!
😂😂😂 don’t hold back your words😂. Thanks though because most of the time everyone walks past me and straight to Blue. Sharp edge definitely will filter people who can and can’t do heights. Thanks.
I get so much joy from watching your adventures… you make me smile , sharp edge was very scary though I found it hard to watch 😮 your trips are interesting, entertaining thank you so much 😊 Blue is a beautiful dog too !!
Very poignant video. So sorry for the guy who died doing what he loved, and some kind words said as the events unfolded. I am amazed how well Blue listens to your commands. Good stuff Al
My palms got sweaty just watching the video. I’m a beginner hiker and only finding and training my confidence on the hills. Not sure if it’s vertigo, fear of heights or “just” a respect I’m feeling when up high, so climbing a peak like this is something in a very far future for me, if ever. Thank you for the video!!
As much as 8d love to be able to just scramble, I've long since given up the idea of traversing crib Goch or sharp edge. I suspect even striding edge is beyond my limits of exposure. I'm envious of folk who are more confident, it's a bit of a handicap when walking with a group.
Just watched your video and my heart was in my mouth the whole time. I did Blencathra about 15 years ago up Sharp Edge and swore never again. It was very tough. I’m doing Blencathra again next week hopefully but up the easier route. So sorry to hear of the man’s death xx
First of all I would like to say my thoughts are with the family of the man who died, this is so sad and it shows how dangerous this can be. I really enjoyed your video, I'm sat in a warm house listening to rain hammer down outside but I geniunely felt your experience. Nice work and look after that GoPro :)
Really heartfelt intro and a stark reminder to all of us that enjoy the mountains and great outdoors. I will always prepare for any eventuality and try to think ahead, taking as much care as possible. But things can and do go wrong sometimes. My thoughts are with that poor guys family and friends. RIP.. Really enjoying your videos, which have great informative content showing your genuine love for the mountains. Keep up the good work and say hi to Blue from me! Thanks...
I hope more people can think like you and be prepared. Many don’t understand the dangers of things like weather change. I’m glad you’re enjoying my videos Take care mate. Al
I gotta say you’re the most authentic peeps I’ve seen on YT. You’re not scared to show your vulnerability either. What a nice chap. I love the kitchen! You a millionaire?😂
Thanks mate greatly appreciated. I’m just me and happy with that. I’m completely skint mate. What comes in goes straight back out😂. One day I might have some money.
Hats off to the excellent job mountain rescue do. I've done Sharp Edge in good weather with a local guide, really pushes you, it really is scary but I always say fear is a good thing it keeps you more alert. Love you dog Blue, absolute star, new to your channel its excellent.
First VLOG of yours I have watched. Fantastic but also a sad reminder of the dangers in the Fells. Will work my way through the rest of you work. Thanks,.
Hi Al, great video, I have personal experience of sharp edge. A friend of mine and me started it in good weather, however just after "bad step" the weather turned and we got snow..... Snow in summer!! Anyway we made it, just. I've since done it 3 times. It's not easy and folks need to know that!! Well done for filming your trip!! Take care!!
Thank you for such an informative and stunningly beautiful video. The landscape is breathtaking but I certainly appreciate that beauty can disguise real and present danger. Your home is beautiful and your poem haunting. Please stay safe and continue to take us along with you and Blue on your spirited adventures. Much appreciation from Knoxville, Tennessee, near the Great Smoky Mountains.
Thank you for sharing your poignant poem Alan. It is very sad when someone loses their lives when it could be avoided. I've done Blencathra off sharp edge so I know how dangerous it is.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE I know when I did it it was raining, very slippery and windy- not as bad as what you were out in mind but it was bad enough. I was bricking it.
Wow....Great video ..loved it.. Crazy weather and very informative about just how safe you need to be especially having the right gear.. RIP to the male that unfortunately never made it back. Looking forward to your next vid 👍
The most magical but dangerous places are up high and that tragedy highlights the importance of taking your time and respecting the environment you're in. Love the video mate, giving the abisko a good hiding with a smile on your face is outrageous and brilliant 😂
Make sure you pack everything you need because you never know what can happen. If the weather changes you need to be prepared for the worst just incase ❤ stay safe guys even in the uk in can be very dangerous 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Alan, Really enjoyed the video. Thank you for sharing. It highlights the importance of respecting the environment properly and preparing yourself with the right equipment to stay safe.
Took me a couple of days to actually watch this, knowing what happened. You handled it well with your intro, such a horrible thing to happen, and it will happen again, we all know this and still do it because we love it. A great video to highlight how conditions can be, you do it with a smile and a chuckle, think even Blue looks at you and thinks 'what is he doing'! Great job again mate, as a stand alone video, top bollocks, hard as nails you both are, a sad day overall obviously.
Thanks Paul those words are much appreciated. We all love an adventure I just hope some will become safer doing it! Blue definitely has moments of ‘what is he doing?’ But I’m his pack so he loves being part of it. 😬😬😬😍
@@BUSHMANandBLUE and you're right about having more subs and likes, i dont quite get why you're not on several hundred thousand subs! Maybe wear hotpants🤔😂 that seems to work! 🤘
Amazing video Al , very emotional beginning great poem . Great information and insight into hiking/wild camping from a true expert who’s knows his stuff . Keep up the amazing work your an inspiration to a lot of people ! Top man top videos !!
That was amazing to watch. So sad about the guy who was involved in the accident. I thought you handled it very sympathetically. I feel for his wife and friend who was with him. Shows just how dangerous it can all be up there.
Very sad indeed for that fellow hiker and condolences to his family and loved ones. Once again another great video and adventure with Blue and glad that the Abisko did you proud standing up to those galeforce winds .
Definitely sad! The Abisko stood strong! I just need to seam seal it. The next night I found it leaking (the conditions were even worse😂😂😂). Thanks buddy.
Just watched the video with my other half. Found it hard to watch in places, my nerves! Well done for mastering that challenge. RIP to that poor guy, thoughts with his family & friends.
I’m always okay and confident with these things but they can obviously be very dangerous. It’s nice knowing couples are watching together especially because my audience is 90% men. Thanks Jen.
Just come across this video Al. Good on you for stressing the dangers of this short sharp ridge. If the weather isn't good, it is flipping awful. Four of us have been doing a winter walking trip for the last 25 years usually first week in December. One year, we did Sharp edge, weather was mild but misty and claggy, and the ridge was like an ice rink with the wet. Slow moving, hands on rock, and all good. But, as you stress, if it's out of you capabilities, or comfort zone, don't attempt. Great work you two, keep it up. Ozzy, Gloucester.
What an incredible video and I’ve never seen conditions like that. Here in SoCal, USA we don’t get that weather, even on higher peaks. Bushman, absolutely insane but I so appreciate your tenacity. I would have turned back before I started!! Ha ha. Thanks for your dedication and so many don’t realize how much effort goes into your filming and editing... not to mention all the returns to get your camera!! Thanks, man.
I’m glad you understand and appreciate what goes in to making my videos. Many don’t! My aim is to make this my job so I can get paid to adventure. That’s my dream. Then I’ll have more time to make better content. The weather definitely can be wild on the mountains but it adds to the adventure! Thanks my friend.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE me too only place i feel at peace and alive Thank you and Blue for your most lovely inspiring Vids! So sad regarding the gentlman who passed RIP
These accidents happen especially when 15,000,000 people visit the Lake District each year. Nights out in a tent definitely bring happiness to me which lasts for days after. It should be prescribed by doctors.
I've been up Sharp Edge years ago. The knife edge was not too bad, the nasty bit was Foul Crag which is the steeper climb above the Edge, with bits of rock coming off in my hands and slippy grass. Its not easy. Your dog is so obedient. Lovely dog.
I've been up Blencathra but never via Sharp Edge. It scares the s**t out of me! Great message in the video Alan and hat's off to the lads and lasses from the MR team.
Great video, and such a good message. I've been up Sharp Edge quite a few times, once had to help a guy who'd got cragfast on the climb at the end. Quite how he got as far as he did I don't know. Backed out last time because of wind and rain. As you say so clearly, for 95% of us it is way past sensible unless conditions are right and even then it needs a lot of respect. It's why we go there though isn't it!
Yes we all love a challenge for definite! Hitting that fear half way up is so dangerous so well done for helping him. I bet Sharp edge does that to many people! I’m glad you appreciate the message. Al
Fantastic video but we were very concerned for your safety Al. Glad you both made it back in one piece Good luck with the GoPro Many thanks Pat & Jen 🇬🇧
Thanks for caring 😊. Well as I said I felt totally in control and although there are risks I’m not too daft and would happily of turned back if needed. Thanks guys.
So sad about the man that passed away... I'm not a walker but we were once getting the train up snowdonia in nice weather and the amount of trainered tracksuit bottomed walkers was immense and I was shocked at how cold and changeable the weather was at the summit.. Awesome time-lapse!!!
I got caught on Sharp Edge once, im an experienced mountaineer, but i can honestly say ive never been so scared in all my life! I got caught in some light rain but it turned the rock into an ice rink. I luckily managed to climb down and went up the other side. Always respect the mountains!

Oh my god Hannah I am so sorry. I’m so glad you reached out. Please send me a private message on Instagram? Bushman_and_blue
So sorry to hear that.
Sending love and peace to you Hannah.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you Hannah
Hannah, I am so very very sorry for what happened to Alan. My thoughts today and prayers today will be for strength for you and your girls. X
Thanks mate
Al
I have had several friends who have died whilst carrying out their passion for the mountains. i also spent two years from 1998 to the new year 2000 with the Amble-side Mountain rescue team.
Your above vlog struck struck a deep cord inside me and brought a tear to my eye from memories experienced over the years.
I was unsure whether to mention it but I really feel people need to know that the mountains are a serious place that need to be respected. You obviously understand this more than most and respect to you for your experiences.
Thanks Steve.
Great video. Well done for asking the Mountain Rescue about putting the vid out Al. Shows a lot of respect and common decency.
Thanks mate appreciated 👊. It’s a tough part of these adventures but people need to realise it’s not all perfect weather and Instagram views
Yes definitely and the CMD won’t take any prisoners. I try to show that in a recent video. 👍
Thank you
Al.
THANK YOU for recognizing the loss of an amazing Person that, as you said was living life. Energies to his family! He soars today in the next adventure I like to believe!
Watched this video several times. If there was a ten stars rating I’d give it that. Brilliant and mindful of stuff that matters. Keep em coming.
☺️😂 well I’m glad you appreciate it!
Stay safe mate.
Very sensible and maybe one day you’ll complete it. It’s a brilliant scramble and I’m glad you understand the risks.
Thanks Garry.
Thanks.
Al
fantastic video... and i am very sorry for the family of the man that lost his life
I love walking in the fells, especially in the Lakes, but as I’ve got older (now in my early 50s) I’ve become far more cautious with my choices.
Brilliant. It’s a great challenge but definitely worth getting that perfect weather window. 👊
Much respect
Atb
Graham .
It’s a sad story but hopefully it reinforces the dangers of these adventures. I’m glad you enjoyed it! Take care.
Al
Warm regards
THU
Wow I bet that was quite traumatic and as you say it’s a big reality check when you think it could be you. I’m so glad I’ve added to your thought process to enjoy life more. This video adds to that feeling for me knowing life is short!
Enjoy your time and enjoy your family.
Al
Love your dog, must be a comfort to have company in bad conditions. Really shows the dangers and the great job the MR do.
Blue is awesome to be with and we have a good trust of each other especially on a mountain. We both love it too!
Thanks.
Exactly that mate👊. I hope others read this message👍
Your poem, empathy and compassion is beautiful.
☺️☺️☺️ thank you.
Hi Alan,
Well done with the compassionate way you started and your heartfelt poem.
Thanks
Al
Have done Sharp Edge a few times. The last time a few years ago now, it was damp/wet and actually did the bad step on my stomach....
Conditions were no were as bad as what you experienced....
Last time I was in winds like that was on Cheviot it blew
me over and I ripped the knee in my walking trousers....
Definitely mate! I totally agree. It’s a dangerous place without the right kit!
Very similar to the Aonach Eagach Ridge in Glen Coe..Been done that many times the rocks are really polished and a nightmare in the wet.
Also forgot to say, I love the relationship you have with your dog Blue, the way you look after him is lovely xx
Your a good man, your light shines on us all. Wonderful channel.
Thanks mate much appreciated 👊
Jeeeesus!! You are a braver man than me Al, very well done and nice touch for the poor fella that passed away. Take care and thanks for sharing another amazing video 🤙🏻
Thanks. It was a wild night😂. I always love it though. Definitely one to remember
So sad 😪
Take care everyone.
It’s hard for me because I spend my time trying to motivate and inspire people to get out and do these adventures. I just hope this video emphasises the dangers enough to help some people be safer.
Thanks Kevin.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE I think you'd be brilliant doing guest speaking spots in schools Alan
Thanks Pal. I’ll just keep being me and hopefully get better at making the videos. Always learning!
Pffff.... here I am a year later.
No one else would know that 😉
Thanks mate.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Enjoyed your vlog, you'll have to train Blue to retrieve the camera for the walking away shots!
😂 I’m sure I could. I think it keeps me fit climbing a mountain twice 😂
I think perhaps you need to take some of your own safety advice mate to be fair
19:18 for example.. can you hand on heart tell me this is you being safe? imagine watching your dog roll down the cliff and then suffering with broken legs, yelping with pain while you just have to watch.. knowing that you created the situation in the first place, sorry if you think this comment is harsh, but you opened up the dialog by posting the video and talking about safety
Thanks
Al
@@BUSHMANandBLUE Fair enough dude, it was a good watch. Beauty of a hound too, I love german shepards
@@albionpatterns3986 I think it’s a Border Collie...I.e. a sheep dog in the UK.

Excellent vid.... Too many people underestimate how dangerous it can be ..Best bit "I want me Mum!"
😂 we all do😂
I personally think going up in those conditions on your own with Blue was irresponsible.
I never had any plans to go here before seeing this Vid so massive thanks for the inspo fella 🙌🙌 I’ll be out in the tent soon hitting some of your spots too
It’s a great mountain with some epic views. Definitely get out camping mate👊
Huge respect for getting to the top especially after witnessing the tragic events 👊
I enjoyed it all but knowing if that accident made me take so much more care. Thanks Paul.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE every trip is a lesson 👌
I agree! Everyone can learn too.
There are no words... You and your daughters stay strong Hannah
What a cracking video. Still not a bad one yet. This one was very sad but also hilarious at the end, and also very informative. Best wild camping videos on youtube, by far. Keep it up Al. AMAZING.
Wow thanks mate! I aim to keep my standard high and not worry about the standard of other RUclipsrs. I’ll always try my best!
Cheers Milo!
Yes there is always risk it’s just minimising them👍👍👍
Was the exact same spot that I unfortunately witnessed a fatality during a winter quite a few years ago. A hairy place at the best of days.
Thank you for your videos. Both of you. Best wishes
Yes the MRT said it’s a common place they get called to.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE it's such an exposed, unexpected, awkward angled slab. Lovely to read so many kind words on here to the family. Never underestimate the value of your videos. They help me massively, as I am no longer able to get out.
All the very bestist.
Brilliant my friend! I’m so glad I can show these places to the less able including my mum who has lived her life with a disability
As a fellow mountain rescuer stay safe Al and if it’s affected you don’t bottle it up💪🏻
Thanks Shane. I feel it more because I constantly tell people to get outside and do these adventures. I need to emphasise that there is a risk with it! Keep up the top work.

I loved your poem, and am so grateful for your beautiful videos. Thank you! ❤

That was so sad to hear, really pleased you point out the dangers, even those of experienced climbers, just takes that split second
Thank you al for highlighting the dangers be safe up there we want to keep watching you and blue condolences to the family of the man who lost his life all the best george and elaine
😂 I think I have a duty now to make these videos. I’m glad this video does highlight the dangers as often they are not talked of.
Thanks mate.
An outstanding video Alan. Really brought home the dangers of the great outdoors. Alot of folks will benefit from your advice.
Thanks and I really hope so. Adventures are ace but knowing there is a risk is very important.
Thanks.
Beautiful. A lovely tribute to another “life loving “ human.
Thank you and respect to everyone who gets out and makes the most of life👍
I get so much joy from watching your adventures… you make me smile , sharp edge was very scary though I found it hard to watch 😮 your trips are interesting, entertaining thank you so much 😊 Blue is a beautiful dog too !!
Thanks Cathy I’ll always try my best and hopefully people like what I’m doing😊
Very poignant video. So sorry for the guy who died doing what he loved, and some kind words said as the events unfolded. I am amazed how well Blue listens to your commands. Good stuff Al
Thanks. I’ve trained him pretty well and it just makes life with a dog so much easier👍
Well stick to your own comfort zone. There are thousands of walks that have minimal risk but still get the amazing views! Just enjoy it😁
As much as 8d love to be able to just scramble, I've long since given up the idea of traversing crib Goch or sharp edge.
Thanks Col. It’s a great walk out but not for the faint hearted. Enjoy it!
@@BUSHMANandBLUE thank you for reminding me of it and giving me the excitement for it again. Hope the wind’s not as bad 😂
First of all I would like to say my thoughts are with the family of the man who died, this is so sad and it shows how dangerous this can be.

Take care!!
If definitely can catch you out up there especially. A lovely adventure for a fine day!
You’ll definitely understand. Thanks Jim.
Brilliant stuff. Keep it up!
Thank you for such an informative and stunningly beautiful video. The landscape is breathtaking but I certainly appreciate that beauty can disguise real and present danger. Much appreciation from Knoxville, Tennessee, near the Great Smoky Mountains.
Thank you Irene. I’m glad you appreciate the video and glad you’ve found me from way over there😬. Take care.
Thank you for sharing your poignant poem Alan. It is very sad when someone loses their lives when it could be avoided. I've done Blencathra off sharp edge so I know how dangerous it is.
Cheers Terry. Definitely a place that needs some respect. A good challenge though.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE I know when I did it it was raining, very slippery and windy- not as bad as what you were out in mind but it was bad enough. I was bricking it.
😂definitely a place which can make your knees knock. As I said only do it in ideal conditions.
Thanks Terry.
Wow....Great video ..loved it.. Crazy weather and very informative about just how safe you need to be especially having the right gear.. RIP to the male that unfortunately never made it back. Looking forward to your next vid 👍
Cheers John. I’m glad you appreciated it.
Take care out there
Al
The most magical but dangerous places are up high and that tragedy highlights the importance of taking your time and respecting the environment you're in.
Love the video mate, giving the abisko a good hiding with a smile on your face is outrageous and brilliant 😂
😂 outrageous and brilliant! I love testing my kit to the max though. Thanks mate.
Definitely! I’m glad I could project that as it may help/save someone in the future.
Cheers mate.
😂😂😂 I’ve actually thought about getting a wig! I have the legs for it😂😂😂. It’s a slow process on RUclips but I’ll be up there soon 😬
Amazing video Al , very emotional beginning great poem . Great information and insight into hiking/wild camping from a true expert who’s knows his stuff . Keep up the amazing work your an inspiration to a lot of people ! Top man top videos !!
Wow thanks Keith! I really appreciate that. It makes me want to keep it going!😊😬😊
That was amazing to watch. So sad about the guy who was involved in the accident. I thought you handled it very sympathetically. I feel for his wife and friend who was with him. Shows just how dangerous it can all be up there.
I think it will make people think twice and check the weather.
Thanks Jen.
@@BUSHMANandBLUE we both thoroughly enjoy your adventures and Blue is a right legend. Glad you rescued your Go Pro. Keep up the great work 👍
Awwww thanks. Blue definitely is a character 😂. My best mate thought!
Yes mate many people learn the hard way and end up really struggling. Pretty easy in dry good weather
You are an inspiration Alan
I love your videos and so enjoy seeing your deep enjoyment and love of all things outdoors.
Thanks Caroline. I definitely prefer being outside and the natural buzz you get from it. I’d happily live in my tent as a nomad. 😂😬😍
@@BUSHMANandBLUE me too only place i feel at peace and alive
Thank you and Blue for your most lovely inspiring Vids!
Lovely dog.
Thanks mate he is a brilliant dog. It’s definitely a place to be careful 👍👍👍
I don't know how you just did that, with a dog no less. Especially when seeing death at every step!! MUCH RESPECT
I've been up Blencathra but never via Sharp Edge. It scares the s**t out of me! Great message in the video Alan and hat's off to the lads and lasses from the MR team.
I think people try it thinking it’s okay then don’t realise how difficult it is. Stay safe mate! 👍
@@BUSHMANandBLUE thanks Alan. I'm content to experience it vicariously, via brave people such as yourself 👍
😂😂😂 best idea mate!
Great video as usual mate, especially driving home the safety side of things, deepest condolences to the family of the lad, tragic.
Stay safe
I’m glad you appreciate this. Many go out underprepared and underdressed.
Thanks.
Inspirational Alan, and so informative as always. Thank you to yourself and Blue 👍👍
Al
Great video! Always far better to understand the limits of your skills (and your kit!) then to take any unnecessary risks!
Definitely and everyone is at different levels.
Thanks dude.
Fantastic video but we were very concerned for your safety Al.
Glad you both made it back in one piece
Good luck with the GoPro
Many thanks
Pat & Jen 🇬🇧
Thanks for caring 😊. Well as I said I felt totally in control and although there are risks I’m not too daft and would happily of turned back if needed. Thanks guys.
Your such a great guy 🙌🏻❤️🔥
Hope Blue is ready for another adventure 😍💙🥰🤗
😊thanks
Very sad to hear of the Walker who died & condolences to his friends & family. Although The awareness you raise here has probably saved lives.
That is exactly what I hope! Adventure but keep within your limits and reduce the risk.
Thanks Darren.
Amazing footage
Really enjoyed this adventure
Great video, certainly better than anything on the TV nowadays .
Wow thanks! My budget per film is 99.99% less too. 😂😂😂
So sad about the man that passed away... I'm not a walker but we were once getting the train up snowdonia in nice weather and the amount of trainered tracksuit bottomed walkers was immense and I was shocked at how cold and changeable the weather was at the summit..
Awesome time-lapse!!!
There are many who are underprepared. Paul was very experienced though👊
@@BUSHMANandBLUE he must of slipped so heartbreaking that poor family
I got caught on Sharp Edge once, im an experienced mountaineer, but i can honestly say ive never been so scared in all my life! I got caught in some light rain but it turned the rock into an ice rink. I luckily managed to climb down and went up the other side. Always respect the mountains!
Definitely mate! I think many have those moments which make them understand and respect the risks.
Thanks
