Good exercise with the Scythe/slasher especially when blunt lol dropped many a dock, thistle & nettle. Long handle Scythe come in very handy when hedge laying along with a billhook too. Just shows the damage Aphids do to plants a no1 disease vector Wildflowers mix look nice & yes nature is like a predator it takes over wiping out whatever is in its path & very important its managed to strike a balance. Some people don’t understand that & wrongly think just leaving things is more beneficial when its actually not. Orchard Ermine Yponomeuta padella after seeing the pupa, (we have 4 species of Ermine in the UK). the silk webbing protects them from the birds and other predators. They will strip a hedge but it recovers & no lasting damage. Like the processionary moth the ermine caterpillar can cause serious irritation and breathing problems due to the fine hairs. Enjoy the Highland Show. a great event . The Farm manager will love it . make sure your check book is out of sight lol..
Great seeing you doing things traditonally and old fashioned. We barbed with a sickle about 3 years ago in wales. Me and my dad .Very good times. Possibly doing it this year aswell.
Years ago we had a cow that would find the bull thistles that were flowering, and she would curl her lips back and snip off just the flower buds and eat them. We figured she thought that they were some kinds of candy. Actually, the flowers and flower pods are quite sweet and sugary. I've even heard of some people harvesting the flowers to make some kind of wine.
Great video as always i also Googled about you're hedge Hedge plants are a favourite food for the caterpillars of the moth or ermine. The caterpillars eat the plant as they molt and turn into adults, and then fly off to lay their eggs on other hedge plants.
Hacking those thistles reminds me of that game wack a mole 😂 though your version nearly had Jack's head off. You had Veronica with you and Ian have Veronica's sister ( he knows who ) 😂 He told me I've got to behave 😂
Good morning Richard Harry and Jack, The first thing I thought of was that little bit of fluff you was pulling about look like the bit you get in your belly button yes, The next thing is do you have a license for them slashers as you all look a bit dangerous lol, And finally how nice it looked with you and the boys working together in the field well done Richard. Well you all take care of yourself and stay safe .☀️⭐️⭐️👍👌❤️.
it looks like farmer p could be right with the Small ermine moth but there are so many that eat haw thorn it is hard to know as you say it is best to find the t caterpillar. some of them can be harmful like the Tent caterpillar that has urticating (irritant) hairs on its body can cause breathing difficulties and rashes in contact with human skin. and the rashes can last for months. you could take some of them and put them in a tub and see what hatched
In central Illinois we call those ' bag worms'. There are 100's or more specific species and maybe Farmer P or someone he knows can be more specific. There are sprays available be not sure if they are available in the UK. Untreated over time they will get out of hand and kill a hedge. Good luck.
I know slashing is Traditional (and hard work) but you can't beat ThistleX (or Grazon) and a 5Lt Pump Sprayer. I love how it kills Thistles all the way down to the roots. (Does leave a hole tho)
White and black stripes looks like a caterpillar they love to eat trees and do you wanna save your trees? You better just burn them off right now it looks like it might be babies. They’re gonna be hatch and you’re gonna have 10 times more down on your farm killing your trees. I can remember when I was a kid, we used to get them in our yard in our trees. My dad used to burn them off because they’re gonna kill your trees if you don’t.
I have often wondered the following, "Why do farmers only feed cows with separate bales of hay and silage instead of mixing hay straw and silage together to make TMR" or is this just the idea of Giants in the Game Farming Simulator.🤔
Bloody hell mate. You missed him by miles lol. The boys are living the dream though, good on you, you're a great Dad.
Jacks one lucky boy. No wonder there are so many injuries in agriculture.
Wetwipe

Possibly Ermin moths eating the hedge.
Strimer with a blade attachment would work wonders for you lol
Lovely to see the boys working well together 😊
Have to put on the finger bar mower on the 35 for that job
Love to hear the history of the farm too

Jacks got nerves of steel. The camera didn't even move
Don't think he realised what happened until it was over

Them thistle 's once in seed iscwhat the Goldfinches feed off , leave 2-3 for them
What the hell of a load of thistles work Harry and jack well it's good for them
What that needs is a verge trimmer right round the outside, bit safer too
Another great video has always Richard and Harry and jack and family 👍
Hacking those thistles reminds me of that game wack a mole 😂 though your version nearly had Jack's head off.
You had Veronica with you and Ian have Veronica's sister
( he knows who ) 😂 He told me I've got to behave 😂
Doing that before your scotland trip your a brave man 😜😂
That video was a load of billhooks 😳
Can't believe you all made it back alive, 😂

The boys done well in the field and a Harry you go for your dream best of luck to you all keep your self safe 👍
Richard cornock u dangerous with a tool 😂😂😂
They are box moth catapillers typically attack box hedging but they do infest hedge rows that are related to the box hedge ...
It's a Tortrix moth caterpillars they form the webs, there can be upto a 100 in each web
The wicket 🧙 from the west coast no sleep 💤 to night boy 😅😂❤
What do you call 3 dangerous men in a field, Richard, Hazza and jack 🪝
You are lucky. Do not kill your sons. Keep that thing in your hand. You were lucky you still got two sons thank God.
You are like three men on a mission wielding those weapons 😂 been there before and wore the T shirt. Crack on your doing a good job 👍

Prep for the caber throwing Richard? 😅. Hope your enjoying the show... stay safe 🏴
7.30. you can't be killed twice Jack!
Hi funky farmer, you need a finger bar mower for the T 20.that. I will sort it out thistles

that field looks good for mushrooms
Lol I hope you’re paying them danger money
Nice one team.
Used to do it with a scythe
That's anti goldfinch mate 😲
plenty more on the farm
Here in the US we call them tent worms. Can be a real problem some years.
Hello Te Dukes of Hazzard Father and sons, nice video!!!!! 😉👌👍💪
Ermine Moth or Box Hedge Moth is what's munching the hedge. Needs thorough spraying with "Bug Clear".
They look like the Milk thistle tea that I dri k
You may want to dig the thistle roots out or they will grow back.
Jeez that was scary richard
Get a field trimmer - that’ll sort them and you’ll still have all your legs and arms at the end.
Is this a new 🎯 game !! Oh my .

I hope you filled out the accident book, after that near miss!!
one years seed seven years weed.crack on.
Just SPOT spray them like my grandad does on a ORGANIC FARM
Possibly box hedge moth
Put the topper on, you got last year rich.its perfect for that.
Youve been framed moments
👍
Just about hit 1 of the boys.
Looks like hawthorn Webber moth
it will mutate into a moth and fly away the caterpillers just eat the leaves wont kill it will grow back next year
That looks like the invasive box tree moth , you need to cut away the branches with them on and destroy it , they will destroy your trees and bushes
At least you're not likely to cut yourselves on those hooks
They're sawfly eggs. Atch into caterpillars
You will have to report that to defra Richard
Hi why not use a strimmer with a blade
He likes to keep traditions going if possible
Safer
Or a nice topper like Farmer P uses on his tractor.
Ermine moths
Would u not be better with the topper on that will do a better job
🇮🇪🇮🇪🙏🙏💪💪👍👍
You said let me show you how to do it not a very good teacher
