I think that the contrast in the head color was one of the best parts of the Vahki. Something to know about color theory and when using complementary colors like blue-orange, red-green, and yellow-violet, is that the colors must have a dichotomy to them. Neither should be the same strength, or the same amount. Meaning, you don't want to have Bordhak to have a strong blue with it's strong orange. The strong orange nicely accents it's dark blue. So to have such violently powerful colors for their eye pieces, draws the attention to their eyes, while the soft body colors keep a nice smooth feeling as they eyes track around the set.
Also, the neon shades are very close to danger/caution signage colors which is pretty appropriate for security officers. I agree that they could've used a few more highlights to tie together the whole color scheme though...
Regarding the plainness of them, I suppose that's explainable by the story: as I'm sure you know very well, the Vahki were robot police officers, designed to be mass-produced. They're supposed to be identical clones of each other, because what's the point of making each district's cops unique if you can just stick to one cheap template stamping them out? The Toa Metru were individuals, and were intended to be distinct, while the Vahki were a mindless horde designed to be a persistent threat and occasional enemy to them--no individuality, all the same model. Granted, those are story-related things, and though they fit in the story, they cause the IRL sets to be lacking, so I get your point there. Still, at least there exists an (admittedly weak) explanation for their design.
I would have to say the colour contrast was a pro. You have to remember they were police units. Police men (atleast in the UK) have a huge amount of colour contrast

Never knew a vhaki had so much personality. I love these guys! Like their looks, name, functions, only which they had more of a spot lite in some instances and more articulation.
To be honest, the Vahki were some of my favorite clone sets (my most favorite being the Bohrok), they had articulation, play functions, and they looked epic as a standalone set.
maybe it's weird, but i LOVE the vahki, them having so little pieces and being so simple, and identical, i think is wonderful, since you are supposed to collect an army
I really like their color schemes, they work well together. Their functions are more numerous than pretty much any other set, and LEGO never did anything BUT clone sets for villains until the piraka.
I didn't actually like the metru as much as you do, their arms annoy me with the stupid shoulder design, and I liked the Vahki a bit more than you did, the double-mode thing is really cool. However, my all-time favourites, the Inika are yet to come, and I'll explain why I like them so when your review comes out.
i loved their lower leg designs and their staffs. the transformation was neat, disc launching mouths? ok cool. chest pieces were symmetrical and likable. they were practically police or clone troopers in a way. i only got four but that was more than enough. overall they're ok sets
I'm always a little bummed when you don't mention the combined sets and I believe you underestimate them. These can be a really huge pro - for me often a major factor of a good or bad set, and indeed, the combination sets for the Vahki were really plain. You could say: "they are so similar, if you have one, you have all of them", but then you leave the combinations out of the picture. Bohrok Kal is my prime example, as these combinations are very creative and different, whereas the Bohrok combinations looked very similar.
I'm not underestimating them at all, but I'm also not reviewing them. They don't factor into the individual set at all, so there is absolutely no point in bringing them up at all, as they don't add any pros or cons to the standalone. I know the combos are great, but I don't want to sink the time into them to prolong the review season, when my current goal is to just get the sets out of the way. Not to mention that once I start, I'd have to review all combo models, which means the ones from 08 - 10, and that'll risk all of their joints, which I don't want to do at this point in time. Maybe in the future, though!
when you think about it,their lack of elbows and being clone sets could be explained with adding logic to the story.I mean, they are a mass produced type of machine with small differences between them due to the area they were assigned to.
The disk numbers for the vahki are the same as the metrutoran, and the top of their canister does not correspond to their element, rather the color of their head. (ex. Bordakh's canister lid is orange rather than blue).
in my opinion, I liked these guys, even though I never had them in hand, they had an ascetic that I liked. I also made up a modification for the arms, use the upper legs of the rahkshi as the upper arms and use the short "bones" from the hero factory series then just regular hands, well as hands :)
No matter what li J said I like them, ive wanted to get a Vahki for a long while, & now if just won an ebay auction which gets me the whole set of them plus Toa Hordika Whenua & Visorahk Oonorahk! So I cant wait for them to arrive, I also like the combo models!
Their really cool heads and transformation ability were enough to sell me on them as a kid... i really loved their designs and they saw the most play out of all my bionicles if im honest.
I always thought the vahki were cool and I'm still trying to get the five I'd never gotten, of course now I just want the main pieces that made them differ from one another ie the recolors and the staff weapons
When you're referred to as a "robot" in a universe LITERALLY populated by robots, you must be pretty mindless! Greg may not like them, and honestly I think in 2004 I didn't for some reason since I only had the brown one (idk why, it's the most dull of them), but honestly they are sets I would consider buying today, ten years after Bionicle's end! Old sets in Bionicle can be pretty lame in comparison to the newer, action figure ones with complete move-ability, but in 2004 we saw our most mobile sets yet! While a lot of designs, especially of titans, from 2004-2005 were cringy and awkward, our smaller sets, while clones, were pretty cool. The con of 2004 sets is the almost monochromatic scheme of them, at least with the Toa Metru and Matoran, but the Vahki come close to breaking free of this. 2004 and 2005 Toa and Matoran were ridiculously-dark shades of the 6 main Bionicle colors, fitting to match such a dark and blocky storyline at that time, and I'm very glad this trend did NOT continue thereafter. A pro or con with the Vahki, and by extension some of the Toa Metru, is their noisy and harsh color contrasts. This could make them offputting, as they were for me in 2004, or you can appreciate the fact that for many of them, opposite colors on the color wheel are clashing in the same set. We see this with the red, blue, green Vakhi. I did not collect all the sets in the early years; I was very young in the early years and my family had a lot less money, as did I since I was a kid. My neighbors, though, managed to collect all the sets between them since they had more money and multiple siblings to do it, so I have a lot of nostalgic memories of getting my only glimpses at sets like the Toa Mata, Vahki, Bohrok-Kal, and Hordika as well as all the titans. Maybe it's that nostalgia that would make me want to get the Vahki today!
I've only ever owned the orange and red one of these guys but I've always loved the color schemes of all of them. The brown one with the blue head being my favourite. I've always liked these guys more than the Rahkshi, in comparison I think they're much more visually interesting.
You get the same design on each disk, but two of the three numbers vary (one does not because it corresponds to the Metru it was made in). (I'm also not taking into account that some Vahki releases came with the mask and disk of time instead of their normal disk.)
Aren't they robots mass produced as police like units? Well sorry but quick news flash police uniforms are quite bland and i think thats why I love them so much, they feel like enforcers without personalty and have one set goal; to enforce law.
Man, I don't think there has ever been a review of yours where I've disagreed so violently with your opinion. The Vahki have to be some of my favorite BIONICLE villains of all time. Here's why: 1. Their heads, while they may not have the greatest poseability, have an excellent menacing design and give them a great silhouette. The fact that they had a great integration of the "shooter" function made them even better. 2. Their plain limbs and odd bodies just help sell the fact that they are fully mechanical police officers. 3. The Vahki's story allows them to be the canon fodder of BIONICLE. There is no other villain that can go head to head with a Toa (I'm mainly referring to similar proportions here) in massive hordes that just keep coming. As someone who loved to imagine BIONICLE stories in my head when I was younger, I loved to think of dozens and dozens of these guys being beat into the ground by my heroes. A problem I have with villains in the later years (Piraka, Baraki, Makuta) is that there were only six opponents, making the idea of long, drawn-out conflicts less believable IMO. All that said, I have to agree with you about the arms. While they look pretty cool and you can get a few decent poses out of them they still remain pretty static (though still slightly better than the Rahkshi IMO). Unfortunately I haven't yet found someone who's manages to MOC a Vahki with posable arms and still keep the right proportions. Still, great review as always!
Very interesting view points, so I'll reply here. 1: The heads looks good, yes, and the function is really nice, but on that torso they are big, bulky, and awkward. 2: That can be done in so many other ways while still keeping a nice looking torso. The Rahkshi did it alright, as well as the Bohrok. The Vahki just rehashed, really. 3: This is a role that has also been filled by the Rahkshi, Bohrok, Visorak, Skrall, and (to a faaar lesser extent, trust me) some Skakdi. Sadly, their story use has no major effect on how they function as sets. =P But yeah, I have been giving the arms some thought, and I'm sure the HF building system can pull off the robotic arm look quite nicely, actually. I'll have to look into that... Either way, interesting ways of looking at things, and thank you very much for commenting and watching!
For collector's purposes, which vahki would be considered red? The head color (matching the canister), or the one with the red body. Would use proper names, but couldn't keep track of each one, nor would know how to spell them.
i disagree with them being plain considering the bright colors, but i do agree the torso is weird and i know there is a way to build it so it dose not have floppy gear syndrome but id rather that not be a problem to begin with, also the transforming thing is one of their highlights!!!
Nice vid Eljay. I agree with what you said, if you've got your hands on one, you pretty much have collected them all. But lets face it, most of the Villain sets in the early years of Bionicle where all similar in design and function. I was going to yell at you that you didn't mention the "spider-like" mode they have, but I see you left the... 'best' for last? Interesting that the next wave of Bad guys for the series was Spiders XD Can't wait to see what you have to say about Nidhiki
If I had to guess, it's because the colors contrast with the main color of the set. If you look at all 6 of them, you'll notice that the color used for their eyes is very different from their main color, but I'm just repeating myself at this point. 😅
The only point I think the Vahki have over the Rahkshi is that their feet's ball-joints are attached to the torso instead of on their feet themselves, which grants them a bigger range of movement. However, the Rahkshi makes up for this by having wrist articulation.
I really like Rorzakh, Bordakh and Keerakh. I think they look really cool and I like their secondary mode. However I can see why people wouldn't like them. They're pretty thin and plain for being Dume's special forces.
Also it has been confirmed that they technically arn't villians. Rather just loyal to the turaga and willing to do anything he commands (of course he is Makuta in disguise)
You know, I didn't think about it until it got mentioned in the intro, but between Makuta being secretly in charge of Metru Nui and the fact that there were actually Rahkshi and Bohrok in the Onu-Metro Archives, the Vahki may be derived basically from Bohrok and Rahkshi not just as sets but in-universe.
Nuparu is Onu matoran, and would thus be familiar with archives, actually strengthening the point. In fact, Nuparu was actually looking for rahkshi pieces in Bionicle Adventures 3 The Darkness Below.
My first bionicle was Vahki Nuurak (the red one) so they were always my favorite 04 sets. Regardless I definately see these flaws now. As always great reveiw.
Overall a nice review, but I wish you'd show each figure's respective weapons, since some look like nice collectibles (especially the black vahki's obes) and, seen that way, should be pointed out as pros. Also I had trouble making them all out, making it harder for me to decide wich one to get,if I want to get one at all.
I do agree that there wasn't much to them as a series of 6 and that kinda made them a little boring compared to the more complex toa. However, i do believe they were the greatest of all starter sets for a young new bionicle fan. In one of my crazy "what if" theories, i think lego designed them as simple sets to draw in new costumers, to give them a taste of whats in store and to buy time while lego was completely redesigning how the bionicle was built. I know as my first bionicle sets, they were the greatest, i played with them for hours and they were still my favorites after i collected most of the toa and villian sets. Not to mention the two combo sets u can build out of them were the some of the greatest ever. I do also agree that it seems like Farthsy does not like them very much. Seeing their battle with the Visorak, in wich the vahki defeat could've nearly rivaled the miserable failure of Egypt in the 7 days war. Love your reviews and enjoy watching them. Cheers mate
My first bionicle set was the Ko Metru Vahki....Thanks to the Toa Metru commercial five year old me thought if I arranged the blades into a glider they would fly. Pro Tip: Bioncle parts do not fare well while flying off the second floor of your house. They will break Pro Tip2: Apoxe glue does wonders with fixing bionicle parts.
I guess they embody their whole purpose very well, to be a mass produced police force (I guess color coded for each section of Metru Nui?). But in the playability aspect, if you have the six toa you would need like 20 vahki for the confrontation to be somewhat believable, the same with the borok and the spiders from 2005
You haven't noticed the 6 masks, 6 bohrok, 6 piraka, 6 barraki, 6 visorak, 6 elements, all that junk? I will admit that stone is unnecessary since we already have earth though.
+BraedenRox Indeed, a more accurate name for stone is "Power", as all of the feats I've seen po-toa have done are more based on power. Pohatu g1 kicks boulders at incredible speeds, in the first bionicle movie he just throws his pinchers. In MNOG, he stomps the ground creating blasts of air against Makuta.
I think that the contrast in the head color was one of the best parts of the Vahki.
The ice Vahki was my first Bionicle. I got it for my 3rd. birthday ^~^
and he was the only one I didn't get, when I couldn't tell the difference between real and knockoff sets
Lol. Actually, now that I think about it, it may have been for my 4th birthday. Not like it matters, though.
+Caleb Stovall That one was my first too! I got it because my sunday school teacher gave it to me. I still can't remember why though.
+Caleb Stovall The Ko-Metru one is the only Vahki I have.

con: no armor on their upper legs (may have been instituted later with the plate armor styles don't remember)
Am I the only one who has always thought that the upper holes in the head piece (the ones looking like a nose) were the eyes?
nO i thought the exact same thing
Galva101 same here
I thought the same thing for a while...
How did you manage that? Even as I try to concentrate, I can't really get my head to see "eyes" there.
Me too also thought it.
i loved their lower leg designs and their staffs. the transformation was neat, disc launching mouths? ok cool. chest pieces were symmetrical and likable. they were practically police or clone troopers in a way. i only got four but that was more than enough. overall they're ok sets
I actually loved these as a kid. I had Bordakh... once.
I love you dude thank you so much for all of these videos I can't Express how happy these make me
I'm an arachnophobe, and yet I like the Vahki's secondary mode.
when you think about it,their lack of elbows and being clone sets could be explained with adding logic to the story.I mean, they are a mass produced type of machine with small differences between them due to the area they were assigned to.
Eh, the Vahki will always have a special place in my heart. I believe Zadahk was the first BIONIClE set I ever got.
I fell in love with the Vahki thanks to Templar Game's badass animations.
The disk numbers for the vahki are the same as the metrutoran, and the top of their canister does not correspond to their element, rather the color of their head. (ex. Bordakh's canister lid is orange rather than blue).
*The Vahki: Metru Nui's Terminators*
in my opinion, I liked these guys, even though I never had them in hand, they had an ascetic that I liked. I also made up a modification for the arms, use the upper legs of the rahkshi as the upper arms and use the short "bones" from the hero factory series then just regular hands, well as hands :)
the vahki are my most favorite bionicles out of any wave
Vahki: i thought they where some of my fav sets though they look pretty cool to me
Personaly other than the coller contrast on the heads I quite like the vahki
No matter what li J said I like them, ive wanted to get a Vahki for a long while, & now if just won an ebay auction which gets me the whole set of them plus Toa Hordika Whenua & Visorahk Oonorahk! So I cant wait for them to arrive, I also like the combo models!
Their really cool heads and transformation ability were enough to sell me on them as a kid... i really loved their designs and they saw the most play out of all my bionicles if im honest.
so what if they're similar to the rahkshi!? if Lego hit a good design with them, you'd think they'd make use of it!
I always thought the vahki were cool and I'm still trying to get the five I'd never gotten, of course now I just want the main pieces that made them differ from one another ie the recolors and the staff weapons
Hey, I like the Vahki! *grumbles*
2:54 how did get the disc so fast ? Lmao
Honestly, these are still my favourites!
Also would you consider the transformation a pro or con?
Here's why:
But yeah, I have been giving the arms some thought, and I'm sure the HF building system can pull off the robotic arm look quite nicely, actually. I'll have to look into that...
Either way, interesting ways of looking at things, and thank you very much for commenting and watching!
Toa Eljay Your welcome. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree :)
For collector's purposes, which vahki would be considered red? The head color (matching the canister), or the one with the red body. Would use proper names, but couldn't keep track of each one, nor would know how to spell them.
Nuurakh is the red one, probably green canister.
The one on the far left with the red body
that's what I figured, got that one long log from the comment
I know this was uploaded two years ago, but you can fix the floppy gear function by replacing the tan pins with blue ones.
The beginning XDD... is so funny🤣🤣🤣
Is retro Bionicle is in Australia
i disagree with them being plain considering the bright colors, but i do agree the torso is weird and i know there is a way to build it so it dose not have floppy gear syndrome but id rather that not be a problem to begin with, also the transforming thing is one of their highlights!!!
hope you review the hordika, those were nice
Nice vid Eljay.
I agree with what you said, if you've got your hands on one, you pretty much have collected them all. But lets face it, most of the Villain sets in the early years of Bionicle where all similar in design and function.
I was going to yell at you that you didn't mention the "spider-like" mode they have, but I see you left the... 'best' for last? Interesting that the next wave of Bad guys for the series was Spiders XD
Can't wait to see what you have to say about Nidhiki
How did I not find out about you guys sooner? I need this weekly dose of Bionicle! :)
6:27 well that works for any clone sets before them
What to do if you dont like your new bionicle toy step 1 just gets some that are lying around that match the color and see if they fit in and work
The brown Vahki was my first set :3 Oh, i miss the old days :c
i ADORE the vahki! keerahk was my first bionicle set ever!!!!!!
I always liked the designs and colors of these, but yeah, the execution was lazy. I can see why they're so neglected by fans.
So the vahki eye stocks match the toa metro, how come the black and the red vahki are switched when compared to the corresponding toa?
If I had to guess, it's because the colors contrast with the main color of the set. If you look at all 6 of them, you'll notice that the color used for their eyes is very different from their main color, but I'm just repeating myself at this point. 😅
still my fave early bionicles regardles of what other people said about them.
I love these guys.
Bordakh was the first 2004 bionicle set i got has a kid, also eljay people can revamp the vahki to make them look more elite
When I was a kid, I didn't care if they were clone sets, they were still badass.
The only point I think the Vahki have over the Rahkshi is that their feet's ball-joints are attached to the torso instead of on their feet themselves, which grants them a bigger range of movement. However, the Rahkshi makes up for this by having wrist articulation.
Not feet, legs.
I really like Rorzakh, Bordakh and Keerakh. I think they look really cool and I like their secondary mode. However I can see why people wouldn't like them. They're pretty thin and plain for being Dume's special forces.
vahki are mass produced law enforcemet robots. ta metru also has to spend their protodermis (lego's plastic) on other things too you know
Also it has been confirmed that they technically arn't villians.
Mr. Chaos 00 This is not true, Nuparu designed and built these robots to protect the respective metrus.
Nuparu is Onu matoran, and would thus be familiar with archives, actually strengthening the point. In fact, Nuparu was actually looking for rahkshi pieces in Bionicle Adventures 3 The Darkness Below.
Just in case someone doesn't believe me, check the wikia.
My first bionicle was Vahki Nuurak (the red one) so they were always my favorite 04 sets. Regardless I definately see these flaws now. As always great reveiw.
The eyes are part of the main head piece and some of the vahki are meant to be on four legs
You forgot to mention that they use the toa mata/nuva feet in grey recolour, which at that time was new.
These were my favorite villain sets besides the Pataki :D
what's a Pataki?
I meant barraki lol auto correct
Oh, yeah. Barraki were awesome. I loved that music video that they had.
Yeah it was freaking boss 😁😁
It was the best.
I wanted black and green so I big sad that I don’t have them
Overall a nice review, but I wish you'd show each figure's respective weapons, since some look like nice collectibles (especially the black vahki's obes) and, seen that way, should be pointed out as pros. Also I had trouble making them all out, making it harder for me to decide wich one to get,if I want to get one at all.
You eat Matoran for fun?
Here's a flaw no one mentions. Why do they use a gear as a mechanical trigger, those gears tend to fall off because of a poor friction/connection.
I personally love the vahki one of my favorite sets just got yesterday and I love them
I do agree that there wasn't much to them as a series of 6 and that kinda made them a little boring compared to the more complex toa.
They will break
Pro Tip2: Apoxe glue does wonders with fixing bionicle parts.
I have rorzakh but he has bordakh staffs because I got him at a garage sale
The add is so good and the vahki turning around is so creepy
I used to have them all sans the blue one
Key word: *USED*
I guess they embody their whole purpose very well, to be a mass produced police force (I guess color coded for each section of Metru Nui?). But in the playability aspect, if you have the six toa you would need like 20 vahki for the confrontation to be somewhat believable, the same with the borok and the spiders from 2005
If these were Greg's least favorite, then what were his favorite?
I always thought the Vahki were one of the best villains.
They need a Jet Mode. Otherwise, they are among my faves.
WOW Bionicle must really like the number 6, 6 Vahki, 6 toa , 6 Rahkshi,... 666
Not just that, but earth and stone are pretty much the same.
They needed an excuse to sell more sets
You totally forgot to mention that like 3 of them can combine, I remember that being in the back of the instructions
I had the red+green one. My cousin gave me all his legos. I also have the blue+orange one
I honestly really like the design of the vahki
