Shadow Dancer was a pretty fantastic early title for the Genesis - it looked and sounded amazing in 1990, and it still plays just as well as it did 28 years ago. It's well worth snagging a copy if you have a Genesis!
I have every shinobi for the genesis been a huge fan since I was a kid I'd spend countless quarters at the bowling alley playing shinobi for the arcade i was super ecstatic when it ported to the genesis but out of the 3 the third would be my favorite
Couldn't agree more. When It came out, my friend got it and I'd be round his house til 10pm on a school night getting in trouble off mi mam when I got home haha
Being the younger child, my older brother always got first dibs on stuff. He got "The Revenge of Shinobi" and I got this game, which was considered a hand-me-down... ...and I'm not even mad! Shadow Dancer became my personal favorite game on the Genesis! The soundtrack alone is criminally underrated (Stage 2-1's theme, especially). I'd recommend playing this game on the "no ninja-stars" mode. It really changes how you have to approach your enemies and adds a fun challenge.
Shinobi 3 and Revenge of Shinobi got my commercial attention than this game but it's just as good. This game somehow flew under my gaming radar back in the day.
Same character. ShadowDancer is the same ninja as in Shinobi! Shadowdancer is the 3rd game released came out the same year as Revenge of Shinobi but the events are softly "set-after" Shinobi 3...
Holy cow this game looks incredible. I don't remember it being available at the local rental store. That's too bad, because I know my friend and I would've loved this game, maybe even have bought it had we known about it.
my god, I love this game dearly, has a special place in my heart, I remember late nights playing this game, even though it gave me anxiety for being a one shot dead and the hectic soundtrack which I love. what an amazing game lost the sands of time. so many memories
I love this game. I owned it and played it a lot as a teen when I had the Genesis. My only gripe is the difficulty and some of the controls. But the controls are easy to use for the most part. I love the graphics and soundtrack. I especially love the music to the second level of The Statue of Liberty and the final stage. Even though I no longer have a Genesis, I still do play it from time to time as I have this and several past Genesis titles like Streets of Rage 3, Dynamite Headdy, Space Harrier, and Shinobi 3 on Steam Interactive. Still fun to play to this day. Even though it can be a pain in the ass to play on an XBox Controller instead of a Genesis controller.
When you are hungry to sharpen your sword and slice and dice foes, you usually get Joe Musashi or Ryu Hyabasa to do the job. But hey, you always get to choose those guys in those games, but none have an animal sidekick that can serve as a distraction to your foes when you rain death upon them with your sword like this game (not sure if this is Joe Musashi or not though, have heard conflicting stories over the years). Of course the dog can get hurt and revert to puppy status for a short bit, but he's useful enough. Plays like the arcade version of the original Shinobi that the Genesis never got, but should have.
I think this is one of those games that I would proudly say "I beat that game" I know some might not think so, but as a Kid this game was HARD. This was my Ninja Gaiden as a kid, I didn't have an NES for a long time. And I loved going back and finding how I could do better, how I could get all the extra lives, the hidden ones and not use Ninjutsu power-ups even on Stage 5. Great playthrough! 10/10.
This guy has probably played this game for months on end and has gotten damn good at it. This game is not that hard, until you reach the final boss. He is so cheap and one mess up, and BAM, you have to fight him all over again.
This is a game I have to say was probably better than the arcade version. Maybe not in the graphical standard or whatever, but more so in the artistic/arranged level design. It's just a lot more fun to play, and even the dog got a new animation when grabbing enemies. Arguably one of my top 3 Mega Drive games, without question
This is a good example of how good the Genesis sound chip was, especially in the hands of the right developers. Technosoft proved that as well, with Thunder Force 4. This is also a case of a home port being superior to the arcade original, though they are both still fun to play. I always had trouble beating this game, and thanks to you after so many years I'm finally going to sit down, and complete it.
Snazziness, ahoy! Yet I ponder, is it tougher than Rolling Thunder 2? (To which Shinobi is inspired from RT2's predecessor) I'll definitely get Shadow Dancer and Shinobi III ASAP... (I've got Revenge of Shinobi, and an early version of it, no less!)
Ladies and gentlemen, the 2 swords ninjas are bad news a close quarter attack or a powered up shurikens are your best options and don't even think about releasing the dog to attack because it won't work
The character of this game is Hayate Musashi his nationality is Japanese-American and he's also the estranged son of Joe Musashi from the Revenge of Shinobi who took down the evil organization known as the Neo-Zeed
Just played thru this game, I wanted to see if I was really on the final boss being only 30 mins into the game. Without save states I doubt I would have gotten thru the game despite it being short
I have this on the genesis collection on psp I have a UK copy the megadrive collection as well though the game is not on the UK version 😮 so in my opinion the best game was taken away for the UK 😢

Still looks good now!
And like Ninja Gaiden, the original console port is a better gameplay experience than the arcade version.

One of the first games I got for my megadrive. Loved it more than Shinobi. Wish I could play it now but I only have a switch these days
I can assure you, this isnt HALF as easy as this video made it look like!!

I loved Revenge of Shinobi....and then I got Shadow Dancer and just lost my young mind. This and Strider were my jams on the Genesis.

I was on the final boss but my father lost the game this bring me nostalgia
My favorite game on the genesis. I miss playing it. I love the soundtrack....I play it in my car all the time
I'm a big fan of shadow dancer
Omg I love the dog. Never played this but Shinobi 3 is my favorite ninja game ever.

This & Strider were most lit til Streets of Rage came out.
For 16 bit this game has aged well
reminiscing this game footage really nostalgic

That final boss was so fucking hard lol 😅
Grrrrrreat game (my favorite Shinobi of all) & walkthrough!
+tollban Thanks!
Greatest game of all time 🎮
Wow, whoevers playing this has got it down almost perfectly, every step of the way.
The Sega genesis version is different from the arcade version and both are still fantastic. 😀👍🥷🎮
Hahaha, if only the game were as easy for me as you make it look.

This was overall a better experience than the 1989 arcade version. At least this one had some enemy variety and more imaginative boss fights.
14:04 Ninjas: wait there's NO GROOOOOOOOOOOUUUND!!

I remember those ninjas..someone really hates them..
Yeah, me. I hate them
This could make a killer movie if done right.

Loved this game. Didn't have a mega drive but my friend lent me one and this game. So good.
Good game for 16 bit console.
Many people do not know that the dog is a ninja weapon. The dogs and the ninjas like to keep it that way.
What many people? Anyone who's played the game knows that. What the hell are you saying?
He's not learn just saying an opinion without research....ridicilous 😂
The music and sfx are the ASMR of its time

Thank you for the video.
Pretty scary this game's title and credits screens showed the Twin Towers...
I know, it was 1990, 11 years before the disaster.
It was censored in the SEGA Genesis Classics version, showing one wide building instead. Strangely, it wasn't censored in the credits.

Damn Alex, you really know this game. Timing and shuriken throws, so precise, like a true ninja. Heh 🤘

Truly a beautiful game. Completely different to the Arcade version, and maybe ever better.
I remember when I hear the noise of saw blade the boss at statue of liberty I put the hair on end but a loved this game
Beautiful white GSD. :) Bonus question - who knows the dog's actual name?
+thecowboy2 It was Yamato, wasn't it? Like the WW2 battle ship that was sunk before it even left its port harbor?
I always called it Nanook, after the dog in lost boys. I can’t remember if the manual names him but I wouldn’t of cared anyway lol
His name was “Good Boy” translated from Japanese
I always think of that bee gees song when I see the title
Bonus Stage Music Is Awesome ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
my favorite ninja characters are: Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden) and this one.

Dare I say I like this game more than Revenge of Shinobi? :)
I prefer ROS
@@CubamusPrime I honestly just can't get into it. I have more fun with Shadow Dancer and Shinobi III is just better imo

In the arcade, you shoot ninjas jumping down from a tall building in the bonus round. Here, the opposite is the case.
Best arcade quality game on the megadrive

Perfect
What does Shinobi shout when he's doing his special move?
So this only 25mnt of gameplay?
It feels more difficult to play as a kid
Which one actually is Shinobi 2?
Revenge of Shinobi or The Secret of Shinobi?
Shadow dancer is Shinobi 2
I like the arcade version,.... and its funny because this game looked like to the arcade on master system
Thanks...💚
wait is this the 2nd game in the shinobi series?
How do you make the dog attack?
shoot and hold don't let go
Who composed the music?
I love this game!!
But a stealth ninja that has a dog that barks to every single threat. Not that much stealth, buddy...
One thing that would've made this game cooler is if they used smaller sprites and a running animation instead of that awkward walking animation.
