Maître Toyama, President of the association he created Zankai, taught in his dojo Zakimi-Yomitan in Okinawa until the end of his life. This is a curtain closes on the ancient history of uechi-ryu.
It is now our role and our responsibility to spread the Uechi-ryu keeping the spirit of Master Toyama who was a sincere practitioner during his lifetime.

With all due respect. You guys obviously dont know the history of the development of karate from its origins. This style in particular was a very early style created a long time ago. Ive studied quite a bit of different styles and various modern day style. There is no style thats better than another. It depends on you and your training and what you take in and use. If theres anything thats "mc dojo" its anything thats been modified and brought overseas with no roots to its original. This was a master appointed by the Japanese government.

Right, the honor, the respect, the disregard for natural environment by overfishing especially near extinct species, the open racism even in public schools, the alcoholism through mandatory drinking in the work place, the utter lack of worker's rights like only using the bathroom on your designated break time, the revisionist history like teaching that Japan won WW2, yeah you are right, Japanese culture is all about honor and respect. I can see by his confident and disciplined demeanor that I have nothing to fear from him, but everything to gain. I did not feel any sense of anger, aggression, or pettiness in his demonstration. He is a master but still a humble student himself. It really must be an honor and absolute privilege to have trained with him. The focus and economy of thought and motion that comes with the wisdom of age and mastery absolutely fascinates me. It really is a treasure.

Much respect to his discipline and his art. Shotokan Karate is what Ryu from Street Fighter 2 used, and so it was the first martial art I ever trained. It's strengths are discipline and treating your body with respect. It's downfalls are it is very rigid and does not really teach combat. It is a beautiful tradition that I come back to now and then. It is very important to not confuse combat with tradition. They are very different. Almost like if someone were to walk around speaking like King James today. Both language and the art of combat have evolved.

I studied Kenpo karate from the age of 12 to 19. I even became an instructor. Then I moved to California and found a dojo and started practicing jiu jitsu. First day of class I got my butt kicked by a white belt. I found out then that I could have been a bad ass if I had picked up grappling from the age of 12 to 19. I’m no slouch now, though.
