He’s fortunate to have a mentor like you. When I started way back in 1988 I was fresh meat for the wolves. I had a few older guys that helped me along the way but most were meaner than junkyard dogs. I hope he’s still doing well.
When you see the new guys do you ever think back to when you started. I remember what I started with and how I progressed over the last 30 years. Seeing someone talk about the new guys brings back memories and I had seasoned guys like you help me along. It is really great to have a senior tech to get advice from. Great to see that you and others are helping Sean get up and rolling. Great vid
Oh yeah, I remember, I never really had a mentor at the shop, I was mostly on my own, probably why I try to help young techs as much as I do. Back in the day I had 3 Husky rollaways falling apart at the seams with mostly cheap and Pawn store tools, I still have my OG Craftsman roll cart:)
He has a good start and I agree with previous comments I appreciate how your crew works together helping out a young tech in the business. That’s a character mark on all of you. Well done.
soon I'll be the new man on the ladder and this was a insight on what to buy and invest into. love all your videos, your the only technician that is helpful in getting into the industry.
Ryan J it sounds cliche but like everyone says. Start with the basic tools and progressively buy tools and before you know it you'll have a decent set. I've been in it for two years and very slowly buy tools and you see where I am.
Shawn McHargue I started with the 100 dollars harbor Freight tool box with mostly all harbor freight tools. Now 2 years later I have 4 name brands tool boxes with snap on,mac, matco tools in it.
Thank you for noting how important changing the drain plug gasket is! Former wal-mart TLE tech, and could not for the life of me get our manager to stock new drain plug gaskets, she was convinced it wasn't necessary to replace em
How many aluminum honda oil pans did y'all strip out? That is the big on for us we see them all the time with the quick lube sticker and the drain washer curled around the head of the drain bolt, stripped out
Nice to always hear about some of the experienced guys giving the new guys hand me downs to help them. Everyone has to start somewhere and it's never at the top..usually at the bottom.
Some Snap On tools don't have a full warranty, this is with tools that were made for the military. If they have a letter V in the part number and an E or a G for a yearmark, made for the military. It was in the contract when Snap On sold tools to our military during World War 2
Nothing wrong with that cart. He's got just what he needs and not a lot of stuff he doesn't. Put the money where it counts -- and found some good deals along the way. Smart way to start.
Shawn, if you want a stronger 1/2 impact for cheap get a harbor freight earthquake. They have 3 different kinds now. The older version is usually on sale for $79 and is pretty strong! I used it at work everyday all day and it was very close in strength to the Mac impact the guy next to me had. They came out with 2 other types recently that are even stronger though. The most powerful one has equalled the snap on impacts in tests. So if your on a budget and want to upgrade that's what you should go for. For the money they are really awesome! 10 times better than that craftsman one you have. I have seen those in action and they are terrible! Also for a good multi meter check out the Klein ones at home depot. They are what electricians use. They are very good. I have used one for years. It was about $100 and has tons of features, even temperature. Which is odd for a multi meter. So before dumping money on the truck check those out.
Overall it looks like Shawn has a pretty well rounded cart. Way more than I had starting out. I've been at this 25 years & have only had my own scanner for the last few years. Nice video & nice cart Shawn!
Nice vid and sharp looking cart, got to start somewhere. I have the same big 1/2 inch snap on ratchet and it is probably my favorite purchase over the years.
I just stared working at a dealership in Portland OR and have only been working in the auto industry for around 3 years now. This looks almost Identical to my box right now, although I might have a little more stuff this is my same box. Since I'm a relatively new tech I'm still building up my tools but I think a lot of people would be surprised how much you can do with just this amount of stuff. You almost just have to become more resourceful when you are starting out because one thing I notice is other techs are just as busy as you are and need their tools on hand and it can be hard to keep asking someone over and over for this tool or that tool. Some guy's are cool about it others just refuse to lend anything either due to something getting broken or someone taking their stuff when they leave and that is totally understandable. You have some of the best information on youtube I think for someone who is just starting out or even with years of experience. Thank you for taking the time to put this stuff up you rock!
Thank you very much, your are my target audience :) BTDT, it really sucks when you are the low man in the shop and the other guys in the shop will not help, part of my job in the shop is to help everyone in the shop!
That' a really good set up for a beginner!!! I don' think I've seen a beginner set up with that much of what you need in a while. But honestly recommnd him a socket set. The northern tool and equipment 305 pc tool set. Then he'l be in a good spot tools wise. And a cheap 30 Amazon brake wind back set.
Good luck Shawn on your way to being a master tech. I was you once , but know I'm retired. Just turning wrenches for my self know. Again Good Luck. Next time I wont to see you doing the presentation.
Shawn should check out Justin Dow's channel and his foundation.Justin started a foundation called Techs of Tommorrow this year and has one in the plans for next year.I did donate to it,a set of new Matco pry bars and it did go to someone that deserved it.
It helps out struggling technicians donating tools that deserve it.Had a 13 year old wanting tool truck brands and was being a pain in the butt.Justin decided not donate to this person, did not deserve them
good video, im new a tech as well and those are pretty much the perfect tools for anyone starting out. just a tip, i would put at least some kind of low background music just to kill the dead silence but other than that good video
Nothing to be ashamed of that I could see. I think that set was $100 from matco with all those long handled and the short set of pliers. I have an old set of pliers from proto that are kinda like the ones you have from AST and those pin pullers are prolly from HFT but for an extra $20 he can have them add gearwrench or craftsman to the side of them. He really has a pretty good set of tools there.
So many older guys laugh at the new guys tools. Not cool. Instead of making fun of them, steer them right. No matter what you do. I was a framer for 20 years. Now i am going to school for auto. I helped the new guys as to what tools they needed. Today bob the builder, tomorrow they may be running their own crew.
I have a couple of things i want to say I think its great that one of the higher up techs is helping him out I remember those days and I am very thankful for that guy that got me started he is off to a great start but why in the hell is is using a normal caliper for brake rotors???? there is a proper tool for that that will not be affected by the lip that is formed right on the edge then you can get the proper measurement of the thickness of the rotor
N4ANE I worked at a shop that didn’t machine rotors and nobody there used a brake mic. They just needed a number to put on the inspection form for when corporate did their random checks.
Seems like a well rounded basic set. I am surprised though that he has a MODIS. You would think if you had the money for that you would have more tools in general. And being a bottom guy can't he just barrow the shops or your guys scan tools if and when he needs them?
To make a long story short about the modis. A friend and I went in on it and since I work at a shop full time he doesn't, I get to keep it with me and learn on it for when he/we use it outside of regular business hours.
To note. That crappy flash light he points out in that drawer is actually an AC dye black light. But actually would still agree it's not the best even for what it's for. lol
I traded it in and he bought it right there and then, got a great deal on it, heck if I had known what he was going to sell it for I would have bought it back!
low man on the list, but is sporting a snapon modis!!! he's in it for the haul... good setup... but get him into a new multimeter... a few weeks ago I was at a friends house and he was checking something with his alt. standing right next to the meter it made a loud pop, and lots of smoke. it scared the $hit out of me...
I have a Klein meter. They are pretty good. Does everything you need. Even can read temperature. Got it at home depot for about $100. Can't go wrong with a Klein...
the hand me down you descibe as Andrews Impact is one of the best impacts there is...To educate you it's a Ingersol Rand Titanium 3/8th drive...maybe you have less knowledge of quality tools than you think
I traded it to the Matco dealer on the new Box and Cart, he sold it to Shawn at a steal, if I had honestly know what he was selling it for I would have bought it back, but Shawn got a very good deal
Hey ill never give anyone shit about their tools. You have to start somewhere in this job. Youd be dumb to run out and spend 20k on a box and tools right away
+lamed dcrdcfvc he helps runs a non profit that helps inner city kids get into the auto repair industry and the non profit owns the scan tool. Fyi he quit the shop to work there full time
He’s fortunate to have a mentor like you. When I started way back in 1988 I was fresh meat for the wolves. I had a few older guys that helped me along the way but most were meaner than junkyard dogs. I hope he’s still doing well.
I wish the shop I worked at had people like you guys!! So amazing of you guys to help out the new guys. Not much team work in shops anymore.
I do my best to have the work environment very fun
Like how you and the other mechanics are helping him out!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
we try to be a good team!
If your the older guy, plz remember when you were young, be like the good guys you met and not the know it all's.
Shaun has a good Yoda to teach him.
I do my best:)
That is a well thought out cart. He obviously had a good example to follow.
:)

He has everything he really needs until he gets further in his career. It's a very nice cart
Almost:)
He's got a nice setup! Off to a great start on building his tool collection.
Yes he does!
that was a great tour...and i like to see the positive work environment and that y'all help the new guy giving him tools and what not..very cool
Thank you, we try to support everyone, we all share tools
He has a good start and I agree with previous comments I appreciate how your crew works together helping out a young tech in the business. That’s a character mark on all of you. Well done.

Very kind of you to say! Thank you!
Thank you for noting how important changing the drain plug gasket is! Former wal-mart TLE tech, and could not for the life of me get our manager to stock new drain plug gaskets, she was convinced it wasn't necessary to replace em

Nice tour..... Great to see Shawn's new cart and set up.... Nice to see that you have helped him help himself.
Ken Hamilton he's the man!
Everyone in the shop helps each other, no BS at all in the shop.
I love that matco bit set, works really well for anything german.
Everyone at the shop does too!
Looks like he's set! Good eye for quality and finding a good deal.
Eric Brock thanks!
Buying used tools is a good way to go. Cheaper and full warranty. Nice set of tools!
Some Snap On tools don't have a full warranty, this is with tools that were made for the military. If they have a letter V in the part number and an E or a G for a yearmark, made for the military. It was in the contract when Snap On sold tools to our military during World War 2
Yeah I had heard that. Don't have anything from that era.
He's headed in the right direction! Good tour
Yes he is!
Good start as he progresses in his job so will the tools, good video
He did his first dash job!
Shawn is off to a good start, I'd say. Thanks for the tour of your old stomping grounds. 😊
SHAKA38 thanks! Working on it!
Yes he is!
Nothing wrong with that cart. He's got just what he needs and not a lot of stuff he doesn't. Put the money where it counts -- and found some good deals along the way. Smart way to start.
He is a smart kid:)
Useful video for someone about to finish tech school. Thank you!
wow thats a nice service cart theres no way anyone can hate on that!!
geo dude thanks!
It's progress
Yeah, but some troll will!
Shwn's cart and tools are great!

Better tools than most techs here never mind beginners. Nice cart kid, keep it up. 👍🏾 👍🏾
Overall it looks like Shawn has a pretty well rounded cart. Way more than I had starting out. I've been at this 25 years & have only had my own scanner for the last few years. Nice video & nice cart Shawn!
Keep the video coming, really great set of tools and tool box.
will do:)
Nice vid and sharp looking cart, got to start somewhere. I have the same big 1/2 inch snap on ratchet and it is probably my favorite purchase over the years.
Illadelphh agreed! I love it. Use it daily.
I think everyone in the shop but Jessie has that ratchet!
I like it for what he does he’s got a very nice set
I just stared working at a dealership in Portland OR and have only been working in the auto industry for around 3 years now. looks alot like my box. I have the easy red wrenches flex head reversible and I love em. great cart tour
Thank you!
Good video. I wasn't expecting to see a Modis Ultra in the bottom of the cart. lol
LOL
That' a really good set up for a beginner!!! I don' think I've seen a beginner set up with that much of what you need in a while.
But honestly recommnd him a socket set. The northern tool and equipment 305 pc tool set. Then he'l be in a good spot tools wise. And a cheap 30 Amazon brake wind back set.
He got some pretty nice stuff. Good start
He does
I like the locking radiator hose pliers keeps my hands away from hot coolant nd snapping rings
Good luck Shawn on your way to being a master tech. I was you once , but know I'm retired. Just turning wrenches for my self know. Again Good Luck. Next time I wont to see you doing the presentation.
Nice video!! Looks like a sweet setup for beginning tech
Yep, he has done a good job building his tools!
Already has more tools than people Ik that think there mechanics so a great start
I think we all try to help the new guys.. 👍🏻
Some don't and I hate that!
nice little set up hes got going there one day it will be as big as yours, hell he even has a snap on scanner. GP
Maybe:)
I love your videos. Great box, nice tools the only thing that I would change is a little better organization for his gloves.
Thanks, yeah he hates how the gloves come out of the box so he pulls them out
Shawn should check out Justin Dow's channel and his foundation.Justin started a foundation called Techs of Tommorrow this year and has one in the plans for next year.I did donate to it,a set of new Matco pry bars and it did go to someone that deserved it.

Seems like he's well on his way.
DOYLECLEVERLOBE1 yep!
He had they joy of doing his first dash job today!
I love my sure - fire flashlight. I own a couple of streamlights but nothin beats a surefire
This Guy put a lot of money into his sockets and important tools
...Every video..is a good video..Thanks a lot..! ✌
You didn't need to points out all the hand me down tools, they're his it doesn't matter how he got them.
Love the cart - nice tools too. Take FRM’s advice on tool truck bill’s.
Nothing to be ashamed of that I could see. I think that set was $100 from matco with all those long handled and the short set of pliers. Last drawer the expensiveist drawer!
Awesome box and tool's brother
So many older guys laugh at the new guys tools. Not cool. Instead of making fun of them, steer them right. No matter what you do. I was a framer for 20 years. Now i am going to school for auto. I helped the new guys as to what tools they needed. Today bob the builder, tomorrow they may be running their own crew.
I have hard time getting roller lock discs. I work next door to auto body shop and get used sand paper 36 grit cut and glue it to an old disc.
I remeber when i started just like that set up !! Now look at us lol
LOL, I started with a Husky tool box with some POS taiwan tools/ walmart/ pep boys etc
Very nice set up.
I love the tool box an cart tours
Great video got some nice tools

Really nice set up
ATD Sabre lights are the best tools I own! If I cant see it, I cant repair it!
To add, coast headlights are amazing, I wear mine all day long.
Nothing wrong with starting from the bottom. Looks like he is putting his money in tools that he will use a lot first and build up from there.
Yes he is!
To note. That crappy flash light he points out in that drawer is actually an AC dye black light.
But actually would still agree it's not the best even for what it's for. lol
Are you done yet? LOL
Very nice!
Was this a hand me down, or did he pluck it from the Matco guy right there? If so , good score!
I traded it in and he bought it right there and then, got a great deal on it, heck if I had known what he was going to sell it for I would have bought it back!
Nice cart
What did you say to him to emphasize replacing drain plug washers? What did you tell him it was important?
you had to convince him to get a test light ?? LOL
I guess he was using the POS HF multimeter ,,,tell him to at least step up to 20-30$$ ,,wow..:)
low man on the list, but is sporting a snapon modis!!! he's in it for the haul... good setup... but get him into a new multimeter... a few weeks ago I was at a friends house and he was checking something with his alt. standing right next to the meter it made a loud pop, and lots of smoke. it scared the $hit out of me...
The Snap On man was selling them at a good price after getting a bunch in on trade after the Ultra came out, and it has a built in multi meter.
I have a Klein meter. They are pretty good. Does everything you need. Even can read temperature. Got it at home depot for about $100. Can't go wrong with a Klein...
When is your next video? :D Keep it up!
Friday, I put out videos every Monday, Wednesday and Friday
There's not too much more he needs to be a great technician. Unless it speciality tools.
👍👍
is he your entry-level tech F.R.M
beemer tek m3 started at the shop that way. Working my way up in jobs. But still the lowest guy on the ladder here so I'm stuck with the oil changes.
So Jesse doesn't like Matco, or just doesn't like spending money on tools?
LOL, he buys off the Matco truck and the Indy dealer, he just bought a UV light off the Matco truck Tuesday, but will not step on the Snap On truck:)
Why didn't he buy it from you
the hand me down you descibe as Andrews Impact is one of the best impacts there is...To educate you it's a Ingersol Rand Titanium 3/8th drive...maybe you have less knowledge of quality tools than you think
Is the drawer dimensions any different from the old cart to the new cart?
Yes the new cart is deeper and wider
Why are tools to fun to watch
Sweaty as shit must be hot in the shop
if he wanted it why didn't you just give it to him
He traded that cart in (and his snap on box) to get a better deal on his new cart and toolbox
Looks like my toolbox. barely
why u let him buy the diagnosis tool man he dont need that
+lamed dcrdcfvc he helps runs a non profit that helps inner city kids get into the auto repair industry and the non profit owns the scan tool. Fyi he quit the shop to work there full time
Looks like new guy is in tool debt. 🤷♂️
Nope he is debt free paid cash for everything but the Modis Ultra that his not profit bought
Flat Rate Master he is a baller then.
Not really that is all of his tools
bs the harbor freight dvom is better than any fluke pos
That is a well thought out cart. He obviously had a good example to follow.
:)
