    I shot film from 1970 til 2004. I never loaded that way, but it looks like a good way. Don’t forget to put a little tension on the film after you load so the rewind turns as you advance the film.

      I admit that on newer cameras with multi-slot spools (or even-newer ones with automatic take-up) the craft-beer-drinker way works pretty well. But on older cameras with only one slot, the '60s way is the way to go. Yes to taking up the slack in the rewind so you can make sure it's turning as you advance to frame !!

    OK, although not a hipster, I am guilty of doing the film loading the wrong way, and yes, it is bothersome and yes, you have made me change my ways :-)
    Hope you have a wonderful new year, and thank you for helping me :-)

    Unless you have a Praktica 😂 then it's kinda easier to do it the "hipster" way!

    I used to load film this way in dark bag, which give me 3 or 4 extra shot each roll of film. Yeah This video reminds my poor and poorer days. But keep smiling and shooting.

    Why so angry? Thanks to them film camera prices have skyrocketed making it that much harder to find the gear you need at a reasonable price. It's great! (joke). Luckily for me I stick with medium format so they haven't really gone after the cameras I use...

      Compose & Expose Except for a few “fad” cameras that have been touted in blogs (Contax T2 anyone?) I don't think hipsters have driven up actual selling prices - as a dealer friend says, “They're into film photography until it involves spending money.” What's really happening is that all the grumpy uncles are saying, “I hear the kids are into film now, so I'll list this Zenit I found at a thrift store for $500 on eBay.” Of course it doesn't sell, but it makes all the other grumpy uncles think THEIR trashed Zenits are worth $500 too.

    Nice. I've been shooting 35mm for literally fifty years and never seen that method to load. Of course, it doesn't work in cameras much older than the Canon you demonstrated with. I've got two Canonets -- one loads even a bit easier than that (QL17 GIII), the other works with that method. But I also have a Kiev 4 (Contax clone) that has a loose takeup spool, and that method plain and simple won't work in the Kiev 4.
    But I will give you that it'll work in most SLRs designed after about 1960...

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams  4 года назад

      SilntObsvr Yup, but what do you expect? The Kiev is basically a Contax II from 1936, so “the '60s way” won't work... you've got to do it “the '30s way”! Just curious: Does the Kiev have that little flat retainer spring to keep the spool from falling out? I had a skookum Zeiss-made Contax II for a while, and I really appreciated that little spring... the postwar Contax IIa did NOT have it (cost-saving measure?) and I had to chase that dang spool plenty of times after it fell out and ran away!

    • @SilntObsvr
      @SilntObsvr 4 года назад

      @@jlwilliams both of my Kiev 4 cameras have the spring. I don't think it's mainly to keep the spool in, but to ensure the film stays tight on the spool when you first load a new roll. Does both jobs, anyway. Currently, I've got one of my Kievs running from one cassette to another (with the spool upside down), which *really* speeds up loading -- drop it in, make sure the forks are engaged and the sprocket holes match, and close it up.
      Trade off a few minutes ahead of time to set up the (reloadable) cassette for takeup, against about as long for normal loading turned into literally five seconds.

    The counter doesn’t work right. Canon P. Don’t know what to do

    • @jlwilliams
      @jlwilliams  4 года назад

      By “doesn't work right,” do you mean it doesn't reset to zero when you open the back? Or that it doesn't count up as you advance? If it doesn't reset to zero, the resetting mechanism may be gummy... try GENTLY opening and closing the back several times to exercise it. (Or send it to a technician for cleaning and lubrication.) If it doesn't advance, check the advance/rewind collar around the shutter button - make sure it is fully in the advance position (farthest away from the “R” mark.) Sometimes it slips out of this position slightly, and then the film and counter won't advance because the gears are disengaged. Don't force anything! If that doesn't help, the camera needs a service. Hope this helps!
