In the 80s it became more easy to vlog yourself but even then it was weird. Nelson sulivan who vlogged from 83 to 89 would always be asked "why are you filming yourself?" Its crazy to sew how far we have come really
5:47 - Thatg shoot with your dad is so beautiful. Definition of priceless moment, saved in time. Dad just loving his son. Definition of meaning of life. I fucking cried so much seeing how you guys posed and had such a cool relation.
I am not sure if someone pointed this out, but Kodak was making Sound Super-8 film up until the 1990s, and Super-8 home movies could absolutely have synched sound. Sharing was done by way of using a projector, some would project and read the soundtrack on the film as well. There were also cameras with macro lenses that you could have just hand held and been in focus. I admire the efforts you have put into place to make this vlog - probably the only vlog I've ever watched because I am not fond of the way digital images look, and would definitely watch more user generated content if it was shot on film - for what it's worth, the process you followed is as interesting as the result and a big part of it.
This just got into my recommended. What an amazing idea! Hopeful that me getting this recommended is a sign it might be in the algorithm and will get the recognition it deserves
There’s something about the old grainy look of 8mm film that makes everything appear much more cinematic. I saw footage that was taken the other day on a flightline of US Air Force pilots scrambling current day bomber aircraft that for some reason was taken with an 8mm camera. Much more intense and the plumes of smoke from the back of the planes firing. It full throttle reminded me of Vietnam war footage. Made it somehow seem aged and yet, it was filmed last month.
this is years ago, but I wish there was a digital camera matching the image to see if even the best of filters out there could reproduce the immediate effect reliably
People are a lot dumber now.. they're insulated from books by an endless web of around the clock entertainment (and their heads are empty -- ask anyone on the street to name the three branches of government).
Outstanding Video, Sir! Your video is about what most of us age 63 (myself) or older already understood. The only way to "hear" what was said on my parents old Super 8 films would be to hire a lip reader. During the 1960's filming Super 8 film with no sound, I spent most of the time just dancing around & smiling....with no audio PLUS that huge blinding, unending flash machine shining on you while you filmed. On my parents NYC wedding day in 1958, the film shows my Mom post-wedding, serving my father his first "post-wedding meal" with Big Smiles. On the film seated at the kitchen table, he takes one bite of food, stood up & fell to the floor pretending to die from poison, while my Mom feverishly waved a white cloth hanky over his head on the floor in her effort to "revive him". Super 8 films made all of us behave like "Mimes"....if we wanted to make a clever film.
I very much enjoyed this. Thank you!!! I was making VLOGS in the late 80s with my camcorder as a teenager. I had no idea what I was doing, but that's what I was doing. They are hilarious.
in the 70s it was actually possible to record sound directly onto the film, as some film stocks had magnetic strips for audio. However sadly nobody makes these films anymore and no one currently processes them.
I cannot believe I had never seen this before! Thanks RUclips for recommending it to me just now, such an incredible idea and video! Huge effort put into it, but definitely worth it! Incredible!
I love this video! What a great concept :) The aesthetics of the rough grain of the 8mm plus the speed variations, frequency cut-offs and low dynamic range of the tape recorder are just gorgeous. There is just so much "mechanical soul" in the vlog. kudos!
This was amazing! Thanks for sharing and it makes you think about what we don’t even know we’re missing yet, like how in the 70’s, vlogging and sharing online wasn’t even a concept… just think about what we’ll be able to do 50 years from now! Who knows!
This is fantastic. I have no way of explaining why this doesn't have more views and why you have only 219 subscribers. You have my sub, Paul. Very good job with this!
its crazy how much camera technology has improved in the last 53 years. Now we have a small camera that has a global shutter, shoots 120 full resolution, full quality photos per second with full autofocus in raw, does 4k 120fps without crop etc.
Could he have vlogged? Well, yes. And easily too. My dad's super 8 was simpler than yours, but my uncle's had a better lens, recorded sound (a mag strip ran down the film), and was only a little bit bigger. When I was 11 (very early 70s) we filmed going to Niagra Falls, and were able to film ourselves sitting at a table in the Skylon, even though that was only a short distance between us. The lend coped fine. Of course, we still had trouble with the spool size, but prices were better then because it wasn't such a rare thing. On holiday. my father would shoot ten or more reels, then edit with a very basic little hand editor onto a big reel for the projector. It was hardly the big Steenbeck I would use later, but it worked, and the sound was kept in sync throughout. So, although your experiment was fun, it wasn't using the right gear - it wasn't using much better gear that was easily available back then.
Might have saved yourself a bunch of metalwork and some arm strength workouts by finding a set of 1970s closeup filters and an adapter ring. But you made it work! You definitely got some strange looks from the passersby at the beach! Good job, from a 70s/ 80s kid.
The variety of footage is astounding. I'm really loving the straightforward format and how well the video flows. Great work! It's so weird to see real film vlogs after seeing so many fake film filters, tricks your brain lol
As a 60 year old today, I'd say that the tape recording sounds like what we used to think was great back then.
Nah. Tape can easily sound fantastic. Shitty mic and shitty recorder.
someone wanna tell me why this video doesn’t have 1 million views by now? this was absolutely bloody brilliant
I think the same :( , this video deserve more
Seriously
This video will get the recognition it deserves! Time is our friend :)
Amen, Brother. It's incredible work and thought.
Bloody? Yikes that sounds violent!
In the 80s it became more easy to vlog yourself but even then it was weird. Nelson sulivan who vlogged from 83 to 89 would always be asked "why are you filming yourself?" Its crazy to sew how far we have come really
But where would he post his vlogs?
80's had a vlogs, it just called "hey mate, can you film me for the family's archive?"
@@TheJaminator128 on the family tv lol
@@TheJaminator128Before Nelson died, he wanted to put the vlogs on TV.
@@TheJaminator128 I'm sure there would be local cinema / camera groups. Small audience for sure, but more than just the vlogger himself.
5:47 - Thatg shoot with your dad is so beautiful. Definition of priceless moment, saved in time. Dad just loving his son. Definition of meaning of life. I fucking cried so much seeing how you guys posed and had such a cool relation.
ahh man your comment's making me tear up. I have 5 and 7 year old girls, and I really need to capture more of their early lives
loved this part too, i'm missing my dad at the moment while watching this
They absolutely could have vlogged in the 1970s, but reading the comments on the vlog would've required two teletypes and a cap'n crunch whistle.
Ironically, that was one of the most original things I’ve seen on RUclips all year. ❤
Brilliant.
I’m amazed there are only 88k views on this Dec 1 2023. Here’s to a million more!
This guy, instead of changing the lens, he just builds an extending arm, brilliant.
How do you only have 150 subscribers? This is professionally edited, recorded, and published.
This video is very badly underrated! Guys, it deserves at least a million views! Please make it popular and share with your friends!

This is gonna blow up in half a decade.
This is so cool!!
Man I absolutely LOVE the end credits song. Wish there was a full version of since its such a positive vibe to end this piece of art you created.
seconded! love the sound of it
Nice one. The sound guy is really fit, a proper macho man.
It's a real distraction
And a compulsive liar, too.
This just got into my recommended. What an amazing idea! Hopeful that me getting this recommended is a sign it might be in the algorithm and will get the recognition it deserves
What a brilliant little idea for a short film. Very well done!
The RUclips algorithm is a finnicky fellow. 4 years? This should have at least 5M views by now. Truly excellent!

they really are memory machines, these things. these aren't my memories at all, yet I feel instantly nostalgic.
this is years ago, but I wish there was a digital camera matching the image to see if even the best of filters out there could reproduce the immediate effect reliably
RUclips algorithm randomly pushed this to me. Amazing video man! Love your storytelling voice and the way it came through
It’s truly a shame it hasn’t broken 100k in 2022 :(
this was so beautiful watching your vlog shot on the 8mm camera made me feel like i was in 70's , please do make more of these
What a fantastic amount of work put into such a needless and absurd pursuit. The outcome was as expected.
Beautiful grainy uncomplicated analog film...love it
WE didn't change, technology did.
I somehow I agree with your comment.
People are a lot dumber now.. they're insulated from books by an endless web of around the clock entertainment (and their heads are empty -- ask anyone on the street to name the three branches of government).
I agree but I’d say people do change too with cultural evolution.
love this
Lovely video, Paul. Nice idea using your Dads old camera and happy to find the story here...years after you shot the scenes !

5:32 Oh yeah, I could pee in the ocean back in the 70s.
Just seeing this now! What a cool project! This looked so fun to make.
I very much enjoyed this. Thank you!!! I was making VLOGS in the late 80s with my camcorder as a teenager. I had no idea what I was doing, but that's what I was doing. They are hilarious.
As someone who vlogs with modern cameras, I really appreciate the effort you put in to demonstrate how far tech has come 🙂 very interesting 👍
Incredible video. Loved seeing what it took to make and how it relates to the evolution of content creation
in the 70s it was actually possible to record sound directly onto the film, as some film stocks had magnetic strips for audio. However sadly nobody makes these films anymore and no one currently processes them.
optical sound on film was a thing forever and can be done with the right camera with normal film
Brilliant! One of the best things I've seen on YT. Great work! Cheers
how has youtube just shown me this. this is insanely great
I cannot believe I had never seen this before! Thanks RUclips for recommending it to me just now, such an incredible idea and video! Huge effort put into it, but definitely worth it! Incredible!

Wow! Glad this was recommended to me. Excellent video amigo !!
Absolutely incredible
Brilliant video, it’s crazy to think what it would’ve been like if home videos of the 60s-80s would’ve been like if shot with more modern equipment.
This is insanely well made
Woah it's crazy! The efforts, the story telling, the edit, specially the sound! It's intensely good!

god I remember using these lol it was quite fun waiting for the film to be sent back to see what you filmed then loading it into the projector
amazing video my friend i always thought that the 70's was amazing
This video is greatly under appreciated. Great work, please keep doing things like this
You’re dedicated bro. Keep hustling
Such a cool look at old home video tech, and I feel like the content of your 70s vlog felt period correct somehow.
Such an awesome video!
