The characters were the whole reason I (and I suspect many of us) got into this franchise in the first place, I remember seeing the memes on tumblr back in 2016/2017 and thinking "this universe is so cool, I want to be a part of it!". ...It's been a rocky ride to say the least, but I have hope.

That was an extremely smooth and satisfying way to reveal a channel makeover, I love it!!! The model is wonderful and the transitions to and each the changes were wonderful, I can't believe I didn't miss any! Wonderful work, as always!
Thank you so much! It took a lot of work to try to get the transitions to go smoothly, I had to manually toggle on each new setting in Live2D as I was recording and then splice the clips together, which is why some of the lines are a little disjointed, but I was so happy with how they turned out.
Character design in general is a really underrated thing in games that can potentially be a selling point. I probably never would have played Guilty Gear, OneShot, TF2, and subsequently Overwatch had it not been for the characters.

The outline comes first, then the colored in version, he starts breathing when you talk about breathing (although I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to move your whole torso an inch up your neck when you breathe) his hair starts moving when you talk about hair, and he gets expressive when you talk about expressions, and then he comes alive!
From a writing perspective I really like that this video about design has had a parallel development of you coming up with a design. It brings the idea that you are open about your thought process, and instead of a teacher who uses his example to teach, you're another artist, displaying something that you like while you learn from it and apply it to your work. It would be really hard to pull this off in any other section of art that wasn't design. Good job! This is especially important for someone like me who is just starting up on RUclips and, while I have my voice and my model, I'm still trying to come up with a logo and things like that
This video was phenomenal! I'm in school at the moment for Graphic Design and I recently took a Branding class which made your discussion about brand aspects so interesting. I love the discussion about how color meanings change and shift constantly especially knowing when younger kids are taught the "meaning" of colors hell even in my design classes sometimes students and teachers mention or recommend colors using the meaning in America. Seeing you develop your brand identity is awesome and embarrassingly its something I still need to do for myself lol. You and Marblr are a blessing in the Overwatch Community thank you so much for your exciting and inciteful videos. Here's hoping you get more subs and get the popularity you deserve.

The stuff about identifying the meanings of colours is so funny to me because it always makes me think of The Golden Compass - each colour represents a nearly endless list of possible meanings, and a good graphic designer isn’t just somebody who knows the meanings but knows how to invoke the one they’re trying to. It’s a super hard thing to do consistently, and I have a ton of respect for anyone who can get to that point bc I absolutely couldn’t do it without a professional haha

That clip is actually from my Virtue’s Last Reward streams last year, and I hid the VTuber model so that it only appeared on the recording and not the livestream for the first few streams so that I’d have footage to sneak him in there without giving the twist away lol
About part 4: the voice acting in Overwatch is very amazing at representing all sorts of different accents from around the world, which makes me all the more dissapointed that they didn't get an actual Brazilian person or someone who could do a convincing Brazilian accent to voice Lucio, and instead he just speaks in boring standardized English, besides like 2 lines, which personally decreases the fantasy and appeal of a character that's supposed to represent my culture. btw great video as always
this is one of my favorite videos on overwatch because it’s such a specific but critical topic; i love it! fun fact: in japanese pop culture, the charm of someone looking one way but sounding another is “ギャップ萌え (gyappu moe)”, and it’s a whole thing. i have such a soft spot for characters like that.

I am so glad you mentioned Moira for the design aspect. Her design doesnt have much subtle aspects but all of the obvious ones are clear and very well done. You can clearly tell what kind of person she is just by looking at her. And this goes for most, if not all, of the Overwatch characters.
So many characters just ooze personality as well as satisfaction. It makes parting with OW hard for me once I start to enjoy it consistently. It's one of the differences that made me drop GEVO only a few weeks after it launched.
People ask me how I can keep playing this game despite never being able to climb out of bronze/silver/low gold even though I've been playing since the game first launched. It's the characters. I love these characters and they will always be what brings me back to the game between breaks.
I'd actually initially planned on leaving the channel pfp alone for a while for this exact reason, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to change it while the video was happening so I could see the reactions in the live chat lol
Literally, the thing that got me into overwatch was the character design. I genuinely owned the character concept art book before I had the game. Even though I’ve consciously made the effort to stop doing any overwatch fanart and stop playing the game because of everything that’s happened, I still reference a lot of its art concepts in my own art. I still follow a lot of the designers. To this day the thing I miss most is the various Overwatch OCs I’ve abandoned, since explicitly playing with overwatch’s design language is really fun!
The characters are definitely what kept me interested in OW. Before I had a computer or any gaming console I watched the Overwatch shorts and knew about the characters from fanmade content, even if I never joined the fandom. SEVERAL YEARS later when I was able to buy a ps4, I started playing and was already familiar with the majority of characters. My sole reason for grinding the game was to unlock Sombra and play as her bc I fell in love with her character and how they integrated her nationality into her design. I know some people don’t care about representation that much but it makes me so giddy and happy to see the cool Mexican themes to her outfits and Mexican slang in her voice lines. It’s like “hey! I recognize that! I know what that means/is 😊!”. Literally the only time I have given Blizzard money was so I could get her Baile Folklórico inspired outfit in the last battle pass. It’s very nice to see aspects of my culture portrayed as something cool, pretty, and badass 💜
I've been lurking on this channel, enjoying the video essays. Your model is very cute, and it makes sense to debut him in a video about character design. I have great disdain for what OW has become, but it's true I still check in on the game and watch some videos about it because I care about the OW world and their characters. Honestly, Blizzard was very foolish to waste the potential of OW's world and characters by trying to force an eSport in OWL. It's a shame this world will never be fully realized.

Nah, nah. The deep robotic voice is done on purpose to match the sheer bulk of Hammond's ball. If there was a high-pitched voice following the squeaks, then Hammond wouldn't sound as tough as he truly is.
For dissonant voices, there's a few other good examples in overwatch (though not to the same extent as Hammond) Roadhog would likely fit this category. You expect this big, burly junker to have a very loud, boisterous personality, but he's an incredibly laid back person, with the bravado, energy and overall mania going to Junkrat. Sigma could also fit this role. He's a scientist who went insane because of a science experiment, and you can see elements of both of these in his design. You'd expect him to be rambling and raving, half his sentences being nonsense, but he's incredibly well-spoken, and if you didn't know about his condition he'd seem like any other eccentric old man And for non-overwatch, you've got (as mentioned in part 5 of the video) the cast of TF2, as well as Krieg from Borderlands. The cast of TF2 are all different degrees if insanity, but then you get to Dell Connagher, the Engineer. He's the most "normal" looking, and in most of his dialogue he seems fairly sane. He's incredibly intelligent, and got that stereotypical 'southern hospitality' about him, but then a few minutes later he's laughing maniacally and proclaiming himself to be a God. And for Krieg, it doesn't show often, but when you're playing as Krieg you get to have the cake and eat it too. Regular Psycho Krieg is what you'd expect, but then you have Sane Krieg. Like the engineer, he is incredibly intelligent and compasionate. The dissonance comes from how you expect this massive, musclebound psychotic bandit to just attack anyone in sight, but in his trailer (i recommend it, it's "a meat bicycle for two") you learn all about how Psycho Krieg is wracked with pain and guilt, and this is expanded on in his dlc for borderlands 3

As a wanna an amateur character desginer this was such a treat! Usually I tend to design my characters in big groups and this usually helps me to have a big picture of all the colors and shapes and I'm working with! Again great content, new sub!
Speaking of OW designs when ppl started trashing on the OW2 redesigns I was so confused on what exactly ppl found issue with. Plus I feel a few designs were revised to be not to stereotypical (Lucio is a good example)
Yeah, I generally really liked the OW2 redesigns. Some of them took some time to get used to, but I definitely prefer them to the OW1 designs at this point.

y’know honestly weird comparison but another franchise that’s… struggled in the media spotlight, Sonic the Hedgehog, has also been really carried by their characters, like just watching your video it sounds so oddly familiar 😭
as someone who began and kept playing lol for several of it's champs, moira was the one hero that finally made me transition to ow. The constant retcons, inconsistencies (especially when it comes to their female champs who with very few exceptions, all look and act pretty much the same now), that riot does finally made me have enough of it. I've known of overwatch before but the previous heroes didn't speak that much to me in terms of design (for ex i considered reaper, mercy, diva, soldier76, rein pretty generic characters). But now I consider them and what blizz does with them far more superior than some other similar games. One thing that I always love is the way these characters interact in-game. It's something that the devs are consistent with so no character gets left behind, it's constantly changing and it's keeping people like me entertained and questioning what will their next move be on a specific hero. Especially Moira's quotes are always sassy and fun + her va is simply incredible. Idk i think i'd be here all day talking about how much i love the characters. Despite not playing the game that often these days, i still periodically return just to check on the new stuff they put in regarding their lore.
It’s a good colour combo in either direction! I swapped it to magenta and green to match the rebrand a while back, and since I used magenta for the enemy team already I just made green the friendly colour.
Not super related to the video but have you played Virtue's Last Reward, and if so how do you feel about it? I know people love 999 but I always liked VLR a lot more
I actually just started playing it on Twitch a week or two ago! I’ve only gotten about 8-ish hours into VLR but I already like it a lot more than 999. Imo, it does a way better job with its characters, and it doesn’t spend hours beating you over the head with exposition. Part of the vod from one of those streams is actually in this video - in the bit where I talk about VTubers during the voice section and show a bunch of VTuber streams, you can see mine in the bottom right corner as I was getting the results for the very first AB room vote (I went with Alice and tried to ally with her, rip).
every time they are coming out with a new character i just think to myself "no way theyre gonna be able to make a brand new character that fits with the rest of the roster..." but every time they step up their game and every newer hero from ow2 is extremely fun. even midweaver
I'll disagree with the Sombra's VA part She speaks spanish just like the character, however mexican and colombian accents are very different from each other and in Sombra's case i can't fully believe that she's mexican just by her voice alone I think the latin american dub really sells you the idea of her nationality since the VA this time is actually mexican and as someone who is also mexican, playing as Sombra and listening her sayimg things like "aguas, ando chido, qué hubo" really make me empathize with the character a lot more than in the original English audio
I hadn't even really planned for it tbh, but I'm glad it worked! I went to get snacks while I was editing the video, saw a school zone sign in the black and yellow, thought "Wait, no, of course!" and rushed home to change it lol
One of my favourite character concepts in the game. Literally a hamster in a ball, but still has one of the largest egos in the game, and the huge mech and high IQ to back it up.

It is! I really wanted to keep a Sombra reference in the design, and her OW1 design’s jacket was the major reference used for the model’s jacket.

The cast of TF2 are all different degrees if insanity, but then you get to Dell Connagher, the Engineer. He's the most "normal" looking, and in most of his dialogue he seems fairly sane. He's incredibly intelligent, and got that stereotypical 'southern hospitality' about him, but then a few minutes later he's laughing maniacally and proclaiming himself to be a God.
And for Krieg, it doesn't show often, but when you're playing as Krieg you get to have the cake and eat it too. Regular Psycho Krieg is what you'd expect, but then you have Sane Krieg. Like the engineer, he is incredibly intelligent and compasionate. The dissonance comes from how you expect this massive, musclebound psychotic bandit to just attack anyone in sight, but in his trailer (i recommend it, it's "a meat bicycle for two") you learn all about how Psycho Krieg is wracked with pain and guilt, and this is expanded on in his dlc for borderlands 3

Speaking of OW designs when ppl started trashing on the OW2 redesigns I was so confused on what exactly ppl found issue with. Plus I feel a few designs were revised to be not to stereotypical (Lucio is a good example)
Yeah, I generally really liked the OW2 redesigns. Some of them took some time to get used to, but I definitely prefer them to the OW1 designs at this point.

y’know honestly weird comparison but another franchise that’s… struggled in the media spotlight, Sonic the Hedgehog, has also been really carried by their characters, like just watching your video it sounds so oddly familiar 😭
as someone who began and kept playing lol for several of it's champs, moira was the one hero that finally made me transition to ow.
The constant retcons, inconsistencies (especially when it comes to their female champs who with very few exceptions, all look and act pretty much the same now), that riot does finally made me have enough of it. I've known of overwatch before but the previous heroes didn't speak that much to me in terms of design (for ex i considered reaper, mercy, diva, soldier76, rein pretty generic characters). But now I consider them and what blizz does with them far more superior than some other similar games.
One thing that I always love is the way these characters interact in-game. It's something that the devs are consistent with so no character gets left behind, it's constantly changing and it's keeping people like me entertained and questioning what will their next move be on a specific hero. Especially Moira's quotes are always sassy and fun + her va is simply incredible. Idk i think i'd be here all day talking about how much i love the characters. Despite not playing the game that often these days, i still periodically return just to check on the new stuff they put in regarding their lore.
I love how we are both Sombra mains but our huds are completely color swapped. I have purple/magenta as my team color and neon green as my enemy color
It’s a good colour combo in either direction! I swapped it to magenta and green to match the rebrand a while back, and since I used magenta for the enemy team already I just made green the friendly colour.
Not super related to the video but have you played Virtue's Last Reward, and if so how do you feel about it? I know people love 999 but I always liked VLR a lot more
I actually just started playing it on Twitch a week or two ago! I’ve only gotten about 8-ish hours into VLR but I already like it a lot more than 999. Imo, it does a way better job with its characters, and it doesn’t spend hours beating you over the head with exposition. Part of the vod from one of those streams is actually in this video - in the bit where I talk about VTubers during the voice section and show a bunch of VTuber streams, you can see mine in the bottom right corner as I was getting the results for the very first AB room vote (I went with Alice and tried to ally with her, rip).

I'll disagree with the Sombra's VA part
She speaks spanish just like the character, however mexican and colombian accents are very different from each other and in Sombra's case i can't fully believe that she's mexican just by her voice alone
I think the latin american dub really sells you the idea of her nationality since the VA this time is actually mexican and as someone who is also mexican, playing as Sombra and listening her sayimg things like "aguas, ando chido, qué hubo" really make me empathize with the character a lot more than in the original English audio
