    Exercising after a significant back injury, operation, or flare-up can be very scary. You don't want to do anything that could worsen your pain or end up putting you back under the knife and having another operation that could have been prevented.
    There are two extremes you want to make sure you don't follow.
    One: Eliminate exercise altogether out of fear.
    Two: Go all in with exercise and assume all exercise is created equal.
    Instead, I want you to take a more educated, less painful approach to exercise so you are left feeling confident in your body and on track to living free from chronic pain and fear.
    So if you find yourself trying to navigate exercise after a major back operation or recent injury, make sure you follow these 3 rules no matter what you do!

    Advice given to me I’m 11 weeks post op L5S1 fusion surgery . NO ONE SHOULD BE DOING EXCERCISES UNTIL YOU ARE FULLY FUSED in other words starting to exercise without your doctor giving you the ok is not OK . Because if you start and not properly healed and fused you can mess up your back get pain and may need future surgery . SO BE AWARE good advice on this channel is not always the correct advice for you .

      ​@Fitness4BackPain yep. To circumvent weight gain bc of the estimated 6 months of healing after my l5s1 fusion, I ate less calories. Doc gave the okay for regular exercise minus running due to the stress on the lower back. Gotta admit that the normal stretches I did in high school for track were not good. My PT introduced better hip flexor and hamstring stretches using the stretching strap and the edge of a table or bed. Love your channel and content. Thank you.

      Caveat. I came home from the hospital with exercises - such as the heal slides - to do. Need to absolutely avoid getting down to or up from floor, but can certainly do bed or sofa. Also, as mentioned, go slow and monitor pain level.

    I'd love to get back in the in the gym post surgery. The pain has increased every year since the L4/L5 L5/S1 fusion. Now with the numbness getting worse as well, I've about lost hope. I just wanted to say, if you feel good enough to exercise the right way, don't let anything hold you back

    I had microdiscectomy and as a result from surgery i got infected and got spondilo discitis, so after many months of not being able to walk normaly and many antibiotics i got better. My question is can i be able to go back to running as i was before, or how long till i get back to running? Thanks in advance

    Please help me and give me some tips for re-strengthening the back of cervical spine and the thoracic spine. I had my cervical fusion in 2009, and I just keep having problems the older I’m getting. The last 3 years I was sedentary bc of pain, occipital neuralgia and cervical instability. I don’t want this to beat me. I fight every damn day and I’m ready to excercise through this pain but I need tips to restrengthen these muscles do you have any advice? I’m 49 and feel 80! Please help!

    I went through spinal fusion l5 s1(open screws titanium rods used in the surgery ) in the year 2022 oct 13 ,i started doing exercises from 5th month onwards pushups,squats, walking plank other exercises also to strengthen my spine . From 6th month onwards i started riding bike also .now one year completed 30 push ups,30 squats 5 min plank ,kegel exercises helps me so much in strengthening my spine .even carrying 30 kg weights also , comfortably doing agricultural activities also for iam very much interested in coconut trees cultivation.above all iam able to do my job as fireman in fire department.but some times i feel there is little pain or feeling strain ,some weakness there at surgery spot .may be it is common for every one who go through spinal fusion .i never thought that i would be this much successful.only exercises and diet especially milk, eggs, mutton dry fruits,fruits helped me a lot for recovering quickly.thanks to almighty god jesus who helped me recovered well and thanks to my surgeon LV RAMBABU(angel sent from above)from senteny hospital ,vijayawada, Andra Pradesh, India.

    ⚠️ DO NOT DO ANY EXERCISES after SI Joint fusion, or Lumbar fusions until your SURGEON orders PT❗️
    It takes up to a year to heal, especially when rods, and screws are used!
    I know this for a fact❗️

    I had L5/S1 fusion in May 2024. My physical therapist is excellent! She says the exact thing that you are mentioning. I walk every other day and do my exercises & stretches the opposite day. I also take a day of rest. Agree 100% to listen to our bodies

    Just had my whole spine fused after 8 operations, I kept snapping my rods, so 2 weeks ago I went through an 11 hour op and was told to do certain exercises given to me by the hospital, these are a killer , I couldn't imagine doing half these exercises your showing as I've alot of screws, think about 67 altogether and I'm concerned my bone graft won't cope with anything to pressurising, so for the mean time unfortunately I'm just going to stick to these ones I've been given, I'll look to progress to more advanced exercises withing about a month depending on how I'm feeling.

    I have had a fusion from T11-L3 for 5 years now and your exercises have been the best I've tried to keep my back healthy and also diminish flares and spasm entirely. To anyone considering his workout program, just do it, you'll thank yourself later :)

    I’ve had 7 spine surgeries. My bilateral foraminectomy at C7 ruined my ability to do anything over my head, or bending over like touching my toes. I’ve tried everything. Neck is so unstable and any inflammation will trigger my bone spurs to inflame the spinal cord lining. I can literally feel my spine being rolled over by the bone spurs like a multi-speedbump.
    I really need help to get past this constraint. Any ideas? Thanks.

    I'm 3months I start walk 20000 steps a day feel good but when I sit in one place my neck gets stiff

    Had a L5 S1 fusion done on 26 May. 7 Weeks and just happy that Iam able to move. Bottom right screw moved and pinched sciatic nerve.
    Redid operation 48 hours after first.
    So far so good. Do feel sorry for myself....back at work though.
    Good to listen to you. 63 Years old. Removed systs as well.
    My tailbone has actual disks between vertebrae. Apparently a normal deviation.😊

    Hello sir,
    My current age is 32, i have been doing weight training in gym from past ten years,but due to long and very poor sitting postures , i was recently diagnosed with the begining of cervical spondolysis, my sympotms are pain and stiffness in the neck and upper back, i want to know whether i can continue my weight training in gym if i add neck stretches and strnegthening exercises as told by you, gym is my temple and it really hurts bad as many online info is saying u cannot go to the gym,can i continue to live a normal life if i take care of my posture and nexk ?
    Pls reply sir i am very worried

    I’m having ALIF back surgery a week from today! Terrified but have the best Neurosurgeon around. So know I’m in good hands. Will definitely listen to what he tells me.

    I had a C3-C7 lamenectomy and fusion... I lived an active life up until my injury, Im 3 weeks out from surgery and want to get active, but cautious as to what I can actually do

    Four years ago, I got a C3-T5 laminectomy and C3-T4 fusion and have been doing physical therapy three times a week since recovery. I can't bend my upper back, because when I do, it hurts at the T4-T5 region. I have severe stenosis at L3-L4 and weakened leg muscles to the point of atrophy on my left side, for which a spinal surgeon referred me for an EMG and then for a neurophysiological exam, since he thinks my leg problems are related more to the cervical-thoracic area than the lumbar. The neurologist prescribed Creatine and more physical therapy. I just had a brain MRI to see if anything there might provide clues, but no. I want to increase the size of my left quad and calf, but don't want to hurt myself. I've only had three meetings with my new physical therapist, so far, but as yet no actual strength training. There is a gym in the building where I live and I was thinking about doing leg extension exercises there.

    What do you suggest for lower body…I need a hip replacement now! I suppose leg curl/extensions…machines as functional exercises would engage my hip? Calf raises…try and see what doesn’t make it hurt. You think? And then focus on core/upper body

    Vet here partially tore my spinal chord in 2021 and had a fusion in the t4-t6 and I’m still having pain. Anyone else had a similar type injury and fixed this way? I’ve had more pain after surgery then I ever had during

    I had my l5 s1 disc mostly taken out 11 months ago. Apparently part of the disc has broken off and was stuck in muscle so they left it. I've gain weight and now trying to strength training again. I have the PT stuff the VA gave I do. I'm thinking of gym, maybe CrossFit or a total gym for the house. I'll make my own decision but I'm curious your opinion. Thanks for what you do

      Had the same thing here man, besides the disc being stuck to the muscle. I actually had a discectomy at 19 years old a couple days ago. I’m a fit dude, not a bodybuilder but want to make sure I stay fit and don’t want to be a couch potato or anything. Hopefully everything goes well for your Michael.

    There are very few exercises that truly focus on the lower back. I eased (very gradually) into the MedX core lumbar machine. Almost miraculous.

    hello i have 1 month fused, l3-l4-l5, i still have some muscular back pain I just walk 30' a day, i want to incorporate some specific exercises, i was an olympic triathtele in 2004 with 20 kgs less, but my doctor is not sport specialist, its normal to feel some back regular pain and rigid at this time of the operation?, when its the best time to start doing more workouts? thank you for your answers, Javier Rosas, Mexico.

    My neurosurgeon set me up with a PT week after L5/S1 fusion. Eight weeks of PT now I pool walk daily oolong with the stretching exercises the PT gave me. My goal is to play golf before the estimated six months healing. Hoping my follow up X-ray will give me the Gp.

      @@lobstermania4025 I lost 40 lbs, surgeon said everything looked good. Gave me the okay to play golf, no pain during or after playing. I still have some evening pain when the muscles tighten but stretching helps stop the pain.

    I’m 9 weeks post op s1 L5, been doing physical therapy 3 times a week now and I’m starting to feel alittle better it’s definitely slow going and extremely hard journey mad respect for everyone that has gone through this it’s not fun what so ever, keep your head up guys god works in weird ways in our favour and our lost time will be given back ❤

    I started lifting weights when I was 14 years old. I trained 5 days a week back then. Once I turned 22 years old I was able to train days a week and make serious gains.
    I am 48 years old now and have never missed a week ever. I got to a 495 bench 1 rep, 585 lb squat 1 rep, and 635 lb deadlift 1 rep.
    A woman hit me head on because he was texting. I had to get surgery. I had to miss ten weeks and the meds kept me from eating.
    I went from 6'2" 273 lbs to 250 lbs. I have been lifting again for last 63 days straight. I have lost all my strength. Nine weeks into lifting and I am making progress I suppose but my bench is embarrassing.
    I don't understand what is happening to me. 34 years straight of everyday lifting and making gains. Only to miss ten weeks from surgery to lose everything. My arms are numb still.
    I am a single father and my son is handicapped. Lifting has kept me sane and kept my mental health straight.

    Hi, I am having three or four bones in my hand fused. Will I still be able to weight train afterwards? The surgeon mentioned that I will not be able to perform pushups on my hands.

    I use to work for frito lay, as a route driver. It was a physical job
    . I had my cervical fusion and havent did no physcial type of work or exercises.. I feel SO WEAK.. i want my stretch back in my legs and arms.. Just overrall.

    only swimming and walking are allowed no surfing, no running, no gym, there is restrictions on excercises and yoga. Once fused one need to be careful with micro fracture and loosening about screw.

      @@locomerlecanecorso7075 Yes. There is no proper solution for Spinal Injury. The best solution is avoid Spinal Surgery. The Most Modern Spinal Surgery at Present is Robotic Assisted Spinal Fusion Surgery using 3D Printed Spinal implants and Advanced Motion Preservation techniques like Artificial Disc Replacement Spine Surgery seen in Germany ( Enande, Germany or ONZ Germany). But nothing is perfect. So Avoiding Heavy Activities Rest of your life is only best thing you can do. Your life will not be same after spinal injury. Many People try to do Cycling, Gym after Spinal Injury Surgery and gets re- Injury which is difficult to rectify.

    Any recommendations for ACDF 3 level cervical fusion C4-C7 for upper back, shoulder, arm and core strengthening? I’m 18 months post op and have been using light weight on the row machine and limited pull down. Exercise is great but stiffness & muscle tightness is prominent for a few days following. Been to 3 different physical therapists with not much success. Thank you 🙏

    Go into back surgery Aug.2nd retired boxer athlete turn trainer for 38 years . I've Herd so many horror stories on recovery I'm 68 now I've had a lifeful of fitness starting at 7 years old. I just need to stay relatively active in fitness.Thank you for your video.

      @lobstermania4025 I'm well thank you, my surgery went well almost a year now and I don't regret it . Just give it time to heal and rehab and move . I'm in no pain still workout but more modified at 69 the idea is to keep moving. Stay positive your health will come around just give it time.

      @lobstermania4025 I also have all that hardware in me. Bending no problem ,running because of a bad left hip is rough but I skip alot of rope witch I prefer anyways from my boxing days. Getting older is challenging but we need to stay active to stay mobile and have a better quality of life. Blessings I pray all turns out well for you give it time.

    I had spinal fusion with Harriongtons in 1997 at 25... it was a 9.5 hour surgery if that is any indication of how serious it was.
    There are two things that I can offer as advice as a now 51 year old... IF you've had extensive fusion:
    1. These are the BIG NO's....
    NO sudden or excess twisting (yoga), NO absolutely NO bar squating, NO deadlifting, NO heavy overhead pressing, NO bent rows... esssentially NO hinging exercises (RDLs). NO martial arts. NO high impact running or jumping.
    I say these things knowing full well that if you're a man in your 20s or 30s, you are going to be stupid and do these things anyway...
    CONGRATULATIONS then... this is what your prize will be:
    1. Spinal Stenosis! 2. Bulging discs! 3. Chronic Sciatic pain! 4. Bone Spurs and Arthritis!
    ... and since you're already fused, the only medical response to this will be to fuse you COMPLETELY... in hopes that helps...
    Hope isn't lost though.
    Personally? I did martial arts Muay Thai... until the pain from the twisting forced me to quit. I did squat, but threw my back out twice and so quit. I ran 2000 miles a year for many years, and completed 7 marathons, even Boston, though that probably was too much for my situation. I tried yoga, and threw my back out while doing it... all this is to say, that I do have the above problems mentions (stenosis, etc.), but I'm managed to improve my sitation rather dramatically, ironically enough, by lifting weights.
    I now emphasize a variety of pulldown exercises and pull-ups, along with rear delt, ab cable crunches, pullovers, etc.
    All of these excercises, done with heavy weight, light weight and everything inbetween, has made the constant sciatic pain subside dramatically! We're talking quality of life stuff.
    SO... from my personal experience, building the strength and muscle in your lats, traps, rear delts, abs, etc. over time... will offload the pressure on your lower back... it took a few months of twice a week emphasis on those exercises, but it's been near miraculous.

      Now here is a question: why do we need to wait to rupture our backs to start following your advice, and not follow the advice from the beginning thus preventing possible back issues? Here you are preaching to a choir, tons of channels with deadlift fanatics are working towards their injury.

      I’m 28, 2 herniated discs, DDD diagnosed. Living with them since 25 years old. I’ve done lifting, D1 sports, and military in my short life’s time. In that, I’ve put a lot of miles on my body already and the hardest part for me, is putting my pride/habits aside in the gym while lifting.

      How do the exercises you recommend change or do they change for women who have had a fusion and the surgery was considered a failed back surgery?

    I am a drummer that plays a pretty extreme style of music and I appreciate this video- I also weight train but I am a professional musician and was hoping for a faster recovery time. I’m getting a fusion in my neck and have lost the functionality of my right arm. It’s been a damn nightmare and this came out of nowhere. People who haven’t been through this have no idea how debilitating this is.

    I received a fusion S1 to L-4. That was 3 years ago. The t11 and t12 nerve was injured and ended up with flank buldge. Basically I have a no left abdominal wall strength. I'm always hurting myself because it doesn't seem that anyone really knows how to treat it. Lower strengthening exercise seems work well but my upper body is hard to do exercises for. My left back muscles are always over stressed.

      I've had the fusion rods and screws surgery in 2000 I'm doing great don't take any medicine after about 6 to 7 months get back in the gym start working out inch by inch working the weakest muscles first working on a strong muscles in the ladder took me about 4 to 5 years to get back to what I call advanced bodybuilding type workouts no overhead pressing no squatting but leg pressing lateral shoulder movements all work great just have to use common sense, I also would check to make sure your head isn't tilted with my injury I had a tilted Atlas went to a cervical chiropractor completely straightened out everything that was tilted inward ankle hips uneven and shoulder on the right side that rotated in due to the tilt of the neck so cervical chiropractors ones that work with number one and two cervicals of the neck I would definitely look into

      I had a lumbar fusion three years ago to decompress left leg femoral nerve but can still suffer lower back and left leg pain in my quad area which sometimes cramps up. Best I can determine with no real explanation from two different spine surgeons is possible nerve root damage and the biomechanics of the spine now change due to the fusion causing any minor problems that existed before surgery such a disc bulging and the like to exacerbate. Hope this helps.

    I just had my 4th fusion 2 months ago. I am 67 yrs. S1 to L1-2. I have cages, screws and rods holding my back together. My Dr. wants me to build up my leg muscles. I cannot bend or twist for a year. The cage has already moved between L1 - L2. My legs are still numb and cold (don't know if that will get better with time) He does not want me to do anything with my back. Should I do weights for my legs? I do a elliptical for 25 min in the morning, but didn't realize that it is not strengthening my leg muscles. Thank you in advance for any input.

      Hey Debbie, I’m 19 and had a discectomy a few days ago, BUT my mom has had like 10 spinal fusions and had to build up her legs. I really don’t know too much but I can’t bend or barley move, and to get down and pick something up, I’ve basically been doing a lunge over the object and grabbing it, and man it’s been a good workout. So, I’d might recommend doing lunges very slowly without weights and possibly adding weights overtime when things get easier!

      Work on calistenics, start slow. Build up your core, hip flexors, hamstrings, and glutes.

      How's your recovery going Debbie? It's been 3 months since you posted this... here's something I would suggest to you...
      Get a workout band, 90lbs band is best. You'll be using this to help you do bodyweight squats. You can "knot" the band around a pole, anything sturdy that won't move... the point of the band is to help you get a deep squat by pulling it back far enough that it can offload some of your weight enabling you to lean back a bit. There are videos on this of course, but I'd suggest looking into it... as a means of building strength, stamina, and also flexibility as it allows a deeper stretch. ruclips.net/video/FpadH5u0v3g/видео.html

      Do isolation exercises on legs, ideally on gym machines or with elastic bands/cables on a chair. Leg extension, standing or sitting leg curl, seated or one-leg standing calf raises, hip flexors and glutes (body extension machine or multi-hip).

    I got a full back spinal fusion when I was 16 in the 1990s. I had no advice about any of this or any physical therapy after I left the hospital.
    I’m now in m 40s and the nerve damage is pretty severe and I’m in bad pain every day. I’m now researching stretches and exercises. After my surgery and to this day I can’t run without bad pain. Even walking, I have to rest after about 20 minutes.
    This video had me in tears because I really needed to hear this encouragement. ❤️❤️

      Oh, wow, a full back spinal fusion and you can still run? I had L2S1 fusion and have my sacro iliac joints bad.y inflamed just because of walking 4 miles. You did great!

      Doctors will not tell you anything about exercises. After L2-L3 fusion the physical therapist came for 4 weeks. At the end of the 4 weeks, I asked “how do I continue forward? Should I increase intensity of exercises every few weeks or so?” He said to keep doing what I was doing. So at next appointment with doc, I asked same question. He said to do what the PT suggested 🤪. AND THEN THEY WONDER WHY SO MANY PEOPLE ARE GOING TO RUclips FOR ANSWERS. What a circus the healthcare industry is 😡

      I had full spinal fusion in the 90s too, when I was 14. No PT or guidance after surgery either. Luckily, I’ve never really had any issues until I turned…40. Now I can’t walk for more than 10-15 minutes without my low back tightening up and needing to rest. Trying so many different things but nothing seems to work (yet).

      Wow. It's really refreshing to see a post saying the Fusion surgery at L5/S1 has really helped after reading about so much bad stuff about this surgery.
      How is it all feeling now?
      I'm booked in to have the surgery in January 2024 but I'm soo scared of having it done.

      @marclarden Marco, I'm not going to hold back any punches... it is a very long journey, but it has been well worth it. Oct 15 will make two years since my anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF). Since then, I've had many ups and downs but more of a positive experience than anything. #1 Rule: STAY POSITIVE! #2: Walk as much as your body will allow you. #3: Make healing your full-time job. #4: STAY POSITIVE! You will have good and bad days. You will have days where you think you screwed up your surgery. It's easy for me to say now but it's all in you mind. Hardest task of the surgery: Not dwelling on it. The more I thought about my back the more it would hurt. My suggestion is to busy your mind. I listened to audio books and podcasts I found interesting and thought provoking (no politics or anything controversial) something light, and something to keep you in a positive mindset.
      I'm 24 months postop and I feel amazing. I have a 20lbs back pack and I walk all over NYC. I swim, stretch, and I work on my core in the mornings. FYI - I believe your core is key. In the afternoons, I do a boxing routine workout, where I jump rope, shadowbox, throw kicks (nothing crazy) the bear crawl and a bunch of other unorthodox exercises. All of which stretch and work the back and focus on strength and stability. All exercises are with my body weight. I just now started to incorporate running. Am I going over the top? Perhaps, but I do not want limitations. I am unlimited.
      Things to keep in mind:
      - Have patience. You will get there but let your body heal.
      - Remember you will heal from the surgery; however, that is only a part of your recovery. You have essentially a new back and you will have to build the muscles, tendons, and everything else that surrounds it.
      - Keep in mind you haven't exercised in years. Well, exercised doing movements that incorporated you back. Don't expect to do things you used to do because your back has fused. You will, but it's a process. Again, be patient . I'm still not there yet, but I will.
      - you will have mornings where you are stiff., I still do from time to time, but as I gain strength in my core and stretch it's seems it occurs less and less. One day, you will remember you had back surgery and notice your back isn't stiff.
      - The same will happen in your wake hours.
      - Know you will never be the same again. It will take a lot of work and effort to become 'normal' again. Again, having your back fuse 100% will not make you whole again, it's the work thereafter that puts that to rest.
      Sorry this is so long, but it's been a journey. I wish you the best and a speedy recovery. I hope to run across your recovery video with all your great news.

    16 weeks out from L2-S1 fusion. Back is weak as a kitten have 10 minutes of exercise then pain Starts.4th surgery in 20 years,at 77 the options look a little dim !
