Just a pamphlet or a few pieces of paper with some information would have been nice. But thanks to you I don’t need it - again, thanks much!
How are you recovering? I had a surgery around the same time.on the 11th. My leg is still numb And have burning sensation and pain. And nobody has answers😢
I wish it was this easy, getting to sleep and staying asleep after lumbar surgery. I’ve had three lumbar fusions and I never got a decent night’s sleep no matter how I positioned myself. That, along with waking up with fresh post-op pain and catching up on my pain meds in the middle of the night. The best I could do was catch a few winks of sleep during the day when I was more comfortable. This is not an easy surgery.
Same here.Im even afraid to move anymore it hurts so bad I can't tell if I'm positioning myself right or not.Sleeping is nearly impossible.I hope it's gotten better for u.

I’m just commenting so the algorithm can suggest this video to anyone with upcoming back surgery. I had a L4 to L5 Disk Herniation and had a Microdiscectomy done on July 24, 2024. Everything went well, I made a wedge out of a bunch of pillows, that was the only way I could rest and then on my left side as you demonstrated, your video is Spot on! Thank you making this video, wishing nothing but the best!
I had ALIF 12/14/23 (L5/S1 and the Neurosurgeon went in from the front) and sleeping hasn’t been a major issue. I bought a body pillow and it’s really really gives a lot of support! Then on my side, I hug a pillow and place one between my legs. I’m so thrilled it was an ALIF! None of the back muscles were cut. Front incision is totally healed. I was in Pain Management for 16 years which meant over 16 years of opioids! Can’t wait to totally be off them!!
I just had L5-S1 ALIF fusion surgery on 5/18 and this week has been incredibly hard. Very hard to find a position to sleep in so im glad i found this video of possible positions i can try out
I wish I had found this video 4 wweks ago, I had spinal fusiont T12 to S1, i can not begin to explain the pain... especially when trying to sleep. I used the information to sleep last night and I got the best night sleep since the surgery. Thanks so very much for the video
I'm getting T10-T12 spinal fusion for severe kyphosis from T10-T12 compressor fractures. Will I ever be able to bend after spinal fusion. I'm really worried bc I can only sleep in a fetal position all curled up on my right side. I'm afraid I won't be able to sleep like that?
First off... Your videos don't have enough views... I don't understand why! You explain things so clearly and your voice is nice to listen to... Thank you! Wishing you well
Had my spinal fusion surgery ALIF 2 weeks ago....sleeping is almost impossible the first 2 weeks......no position is comfortable.....it gets better by the 2 week mark....atleast for me....I finally slept a full 5 hours yesterday and it felt amazing lol
I'm on a waiting list for L3/L4 surgery. Maybe before Xmas. I have intense pain every night right now and I will try these recommendations from tonight on. Wish me luck. Thanks I found your video very helpful.
Just had L5-S1 laminectomy and discectomy on Friday and they didn’t teach me any of this in hospital, they literally put me in a chair after surgery and sent me home. Last few days have been the worst days of my life. Imma have to try this out!
So sorry your going through this. I had a decompression on nov 6, and I woke up not feeling my leg. End up with an emergency surgery decompression plus fusion on Nov 8th. Was in icu lost 80 percent of my blood they had to give me 4 transfusions. Today, I am home, but I still don't feel my leg. No sleep. Lots of pain, and on Thursday, I am getting a test on my legs for blood clots. 😩
@kellyh4052 my leg is still numb. It swells up a lot when I walk long distance or stand for more than 10 mins. Is feel strange to just feel part of the leg. I am trying to make the best right now. I am just glad I can walk.
@@yvonneschimmel453 Thank you for replying. I pray you keep on healing. I took a fall yesterday; my knee went numb out of nowhere. It's a very strange feeling. God Bless you!
It is unbelievable. It is not suggested to sit at least for two weeks after discectomy as the problem can reocur again because of pressure. You have to be keep straight back for a while. After the same surgery I been recommended not sit for two months and after slowly start seating on kneeling chair.
thank you all help i go dec 1 fusion .this will be my second back surgery my first was a lamdatumey 6 yrs ago .also glad found a recent video such as yours my biggest challage will be sleeping as i sleep on my side keep healing ! thanks agin
Had Spinal Fusion L5/S1 3 weeks ago. Doing fairly well now but has been a painful experience with progress to recovery! I found I had the worst pain whilst in bed. Laying on the side with a fat pillow in between your knees is an absolute must! Though sadly whilst we are asleep we naturally shift position. Quite often I would wake and realise I had moved to lay for a number of hrs on my back without inserting a fat pillow under my knees. This would send my back into a real state of pain on awaking! This is not a good experience at all!
@@sm5405 Making steady but slow progress. Has been 3 months now since op and hoping to get my Xrays in a couple of weeks to see if the spine is fusing correctly. All in all I wished I'd had the op much sooner. So don't worry too much. You will be moving around much sooner than you might thinks. Maybe get your Dr to prescribe Diazepam for 3 days leading up to the op. They will keep U calm.
thank you, very helpful suggestions from a professional...just got home from the hospital and worried about sleeping tonight but now I know what to do!
Hi, Great video. I had a laminectomy 5 weeks ago. What a recovery. Definitely no joke. I do feel better as the weeks move forward. I did sleep exactly like you said and it worked awesome! Thanks, Chris.
Hi I’m going to get a laminectomy soon. Could you please tell me how your recovery process was and how long you were out as in work, school or daily activities ? I know everyone is different I just am curious.
@@sm5405 Hi! I’m about 4 months post op and am doing well now. My laminectomy included the removal of a tumor that was pushing on my spinal cord. Surgery went well and the first day was okay and I wasn’t in much pain (I was on pain meds). The next few days is when I really felt the back pain, it was like a sore feeling and simply just painful. I experienced incontinence due to the nerves being tampered with and that has just started to go away within the last month. I also ended up having a spinal leak (which is one of the main risks for this procedure) it was clear in the beginning and I had to go to the emergency room. The leak later turned red/yellow which made them believe I had an infection so I was put on extremely high antibiotics. Everything is fine now and I feel so much better now that i’m not in pain all the time. My scar honestly isn’t that noticeable at all it’s very small. Overall, my experience was great and recovery wasn’t too bad. I did have times where my feet hurt just to even stand on them and i had to be assisted with everything. I hope your surgery goes well!! Good luck.
@@corriceflowers1362 that's just going to be my first surgery, I was selling fruit on the side of the highway when a truck lost a wheel and it hit me about 60 mph, got extreme damage everywhere. head trauma, broken ribs, broken back vertebraes, compression fracture crushed disks in my back, neck and my hip has been giving me hell. Over the past 3 months pain is just part of my normal life. Sad part is no private insurance so pretty much besides physical therapy I have one appointment this with neurologist and one next month with orthopedic Dr, back surgery will be in November or December followed by neck surgery afterwards then I guess they will have to address my hip situation. I'm glad you are doing well. Hopefully in a year or two my life will be semi normal again. I think the worst part is the constant ringing in my ears that never stops. Lucky to be alive though so just looking at what I get to experience in my near future.
I will be having surgery hopefully by the end of Feb. Waiting to see the vascular surgeon. I'm researching things that will help me with my recovery. Thank you for this information.
2 issues I has was: - I have a bad left knee that doesn’t bend so I had to figure a new way to get into bed. Sat back as far as possible, lift leg onto bed then right and scooted the body to line up straight., lower and then auto bed lift head. - with the back brace in it’s the pressure it puts on bladder.
Holy hell, am two weeks out of a spinal fusion from Mayo in Jax and getting OUT of the bed is excruciating. Five attempts this a.m. before I could get out. Thankful to have a lift recliner, but miss the bed!

Because of Pain levels Thanks again God bless
I had a really bad experience with my surgery. Went almost four days with very little sleep, even with the pain meds. Actually had to sleep with back brace on for the first two nights and nobody told me anything about the compression socks on how long to wear them. I live alone so I had cut them off with a knife. They were cutting off the circulation to my feet. They went in from my right side so that only left me with one option for sleeping. Things improved as time went on but now I have to do it again because the disc below it started failing before I could fully recover. Gonna try physical therapy for a couple months first.
12 hours on 12 hours off for the compression socks (you can just do days on nights off though is what my nurse said). Always make sure you ASK QUESTIONS before and after surgery. Remember, to many questions for your surgeon as well as nurses is never a bad thing. Also the reading material as well as videos are there for a reason. And I'm pretty sure using a k ife to cut off your socks posses a bigger risk then the circulation In which was cutting of for probably at least a few months prior to surgery would do to you anyway;thus waiting a few more days to go back into the hospital would do you anyway haha. So what did we learn folks? ----ask questions ----don't cut things off your ankle with a sharp knife

So i had a very large tumor, that i think sat behind my stomach but eventually grew all the way into my spine, and pelvic it was a nerve tumor and everything on my right side was affected.. Unfortunately the tumor was eating away at my bones caused a fracture in my spine so i just had surgery a week ago it was 15 hours they took out 95℅ of the tumor and i had to get a spinal fusion .. @@luismuzer6196 I'm sure they are gonna move some around ,but to me that was the least painful part of it. Laying down and sitting up was my biggest challenge. Laying down I had to put a pillow behind me and 1 in between my knees and when sitting up ,I would bring my knees up like I was curling up in a ball and slowly lift myself up or slowly roll far enough to get my legs , feet over the bed and lift myself up that way.

I had lumber spinal fusion on three vertebrae, this is not possible for me to up back for 4 weeks like in this video show on 5.33 timing, also i have minimally invasive surgery , is this ok to adjust like this because doctor said that don't bending or twisting not allowed
Thank you for your advice ,I'm now recovering from a laminectomy and what you say in this video is very logic..as an example when you mentioned about a pillow in back and front,I naturally did but used a blanket on my back behind along with the pillow between my legs and one to hug on.Thanks alot.If you have any advice for bending while lifting and also posture while driving and sitting at disk,i wouldvhighly appreciate it.
It’s important to maintain a pretty upright position throughout the recovery process. I recommend squatting or using a reacher tool to get low items or to reach legs/feet/floor. I’m a big fan of extra cushion when seated in a desk chair. A cushion with a sacral/coxyl opening can take some pressure off!
I got fusion lift in Ocala hospital Florida and 70 percent of staff were children and have very little respect for there patients even was man handled in middle of night by a man was trying to use sink and he dragged me by my shoulder hard as he could very scared of treatment after surgery never use Ocala hospital for T lift fusion Im sure I was not only person there treated like that
I’m about to have this surgery in 2 weeks! It scares me but I’m hopeful that it will help this pain. Anyone can give me an idea of how it really is afterwards? Like pain level or mobility. Any suggestions? Thank you!
@@trishnamm4216 honestly guys be grateful for those for 48 hours and days in hospital. Medication isn’t the same at home as the doctors. Your stay in the hospital will be okay they have a lot for you and the pain is only there when medication wears of every few hours. Getting home is the tough part. Your biggest issues will be walking and being comfortable laying down. If you can lay on your side it helps a lot honestly. I’m athletic and young I walked my whole hospital floor my first day of recovery and the recovery was still painful just try limiting bending and twisting abs make your room comfortable as possible
And for me I’m pretty mobiles as of my first week of recovery but it does hurt I had 81 degree curve so hopefully you guys have Smaller ones maybe it will hurt less
I had a laminectomy and discectomy L1/L2 about 3 days ago, and I am having a hard time getting comfortable in bed. When I try to sleep on my side both of my arms go numb. I don't have a lot of pillows at my disposal (I have one king size pillow and a medium size Squishmallow in the shape of a dumpling 😂).
I have same- 3 disks & spondylolisthesis(slip vertebrae at t5) I am planning surg for Dec, would u wait till warmer months? Also my bathroom is on upper floor with bedrooms (7 steps ) no bathroom on main level, will that b a problem? Should I set up bed on main floor with no bathroom. Pls help & I hope ur feeling better ❤
To begin you are not laying on a extra firm mattress which is required for that type of conditions. As we can see your spine is not being aligned at all. And I know very well based on my own experience how painful is trying to move from one side to the other when you are on a lumbar crisis (not to mention when you are on post surgery recovery process) So you have no idea what lumbar pain neither post surgery is like.
As long as you maintain your spinal alignment, it should be approved. Always clarify any restrictions specific to your surgical recovery with you medical team.
I found your video helpful. I have a question though about shifting after turning. It’s always explained as a log roll and that’s it. But even in your video, I see you shift your hips after rolling onto your side. I’m always so worried that when I shift my hips after log rolling that I’m twisting my spine. No one ever addresses this part. Can you explain?
As long as when you shift your hips, you are also keeping your shoulders lined with the hips, you should be fine. Small movements are not the problem and it is expected you will make little, imperfect movements. You really just need to avoid the big twists or lots of little movements repeatedly. Does that make sense?
I had emergency PLIF on 3/25/23 and foraminotomy that left me with five incisions/scars. I have problems rising and sitting half way in between. I sleep like crap because my hips and pelvic area feel like lead when I’m trying to turn in bed. My excruciating pain is gone, but now I have right foot drop and a full ache in my lower back because it feels like a claw in on it. I have to turn from side to side all night when one goes numb and I have to literally drag or manually push my hips to cooperate. Additionally, I’m a year round allergy sufferer and now coughing and sneezing shoots pain to my lumbar. This is a whole new kind of miserable. I feel helpless 😢
@@EquipMeOT Thank you for this comforting answer. I usually sleep on my side, the upper leg flexed in front of me and the other leg straight (helps with avoiding hyperextension due to anterior pelvic tilt) and this might become a problem for me (fusion next week).
What if you’re a stomach sleeper? With a bad back and hips, it hurts too much to sleep on my back. I can sleep just a bit on my side, but mostly sleep on my stomach (with my knee of one leg’s knee bent and up near my hip or thigh).
Getting over onto and off of the stomach is really the challenge if that position. It can be done with some momentum and practice, but you have to avoid twisting during the movement.
I had a 2 level fusion done at l4 l5 an l5 s1. I can't sleep on back an when I sleep on my side my shoulder and hips hurt. Is there away I can sleep on my stomach
If you are able to get onto and off of your stomach while maintaining correct spinal alignment, you can rest on your stomach. The important thing is keeping everything straight and avoiding twisting, which is particularly hard when going from stomach to back.
That initial position with the wedge & pillows is extremely painful! Too much pressure on the back. Also trying to fix the pillows behind you without twisting is nigh impossible! I think these demonstrations should be shown with a person who has actually had back surgery!
Not everyone tolerates every position the same. So many factors come into play during back surgery recovery. I’ve been working with recovery patients for 10years and these positions are examples that I’ve seen work for various patients during their recoveries. My goal was to provide as many options as possible. A singular point of view of one persons experience is fine but won’t be generalizable.
The overall guidance/technique is sound but the demonstration is very far from reality. After you have had a spinal procedure and also have an incision in your back, what you can’t know unless you’ve been through it is that very few will have the core strength to perform these activities. You cannot shimmy or adjust easily at all, not even a cm. Right after, you likely won’t even have the strength to do this on your own. Add a brace and pain from surgery on top of this, and it is nothing close to being this straightforward and independent. It would be great to have a realistic demonstration for someone who is actually recovering to help show the true motions and what it would really look like. For example, after your “one solid roll”, you lift your hips and adjust yourself, and that is not realistic for someone in actual recovery!
I totally respect the reality of surgery recovery! I've worked with hundreds of people going through it and know it's incredibly arduous and individual! I agree that my demo cannot possibly simulate the exact recovery process (and I would never attempt to fake an injury or recovery out of respect for anyone actually going through it!). These videos are meant as best case scenario to start the process of recovery. I strongly recommend your individual journey be monitored by a medical professional who can assist and guide in the specifics of your needs.
I surely appreciate ur honesty because I was thinking the same I to am preparing for scoliosis surgery I fear 😢at times but my pain is awful I heard this pain after surgery is awful how do u not twist u got to get out of bed I need more demonstration getting in out of bed an how high should ur bed be my bed is high 😢 an when u leave the hospital do that go over an demonstrste how to get in out of bed an how long does the Pain last 😢😢gosh I wish I didn't have to do this I hope ure feeling better?
As long as the spinal alignment remains intact, the hip should be able to be lifted straight up and then back down. This movement may not be physically possible depending on the location of the back surgery. It is very person specific, but some small movement at the hip should be safe for most.
You shifted your hips after you rolled which is something I can’t currently do. I had an l5/s1 laminectomy discectomy 3 days ago and am struggling with the log roll. Also when I use a wedge under pillows it feels like too much pressure on tailbone area and if I just lie flat with wedge under my knees my stomach muscles hurt and I find it impossible to bring my knees up to get into the log roll position. I feel at a loss right now :(
That is a tough recovery 😕 I wasn’t always a big fan of recliners for sleeping, but for the early recovery period you might find it more comfortable. If you’LT tailbone is really sore a quality cushion may be important. I have a bad tailbone and use this on all my seating 👇🏻 amzn.to/3bclFk6

Are u feeling good now?
Makes a lot of sense! I have painful sciatica and using a pillow between my knees and one behind my back, truly helps keep the pain at bay.
I'm on a waiting list for L3/L4 surgery. Maybe before Xmas. I have intense pain every night right now and I will try these recommendations from tonight on. Wish me luck. Thanks I found your video very helpful.
Thank u first night going to sleep after surgery and this is gonna help me do it confidently knowing I'm not hurting myself.
That’s great to hear! Good luck on your recovery!
@@yvonneschimmel453 I am so sorry you had to go through this. I hope you are feeling better. Please update us. Blessings...
After the same surgery I been recommended not sit for two months and after slowly start seating on kneeling chair.
thank you all help i go dec 1 fusion .this will be my second back surgery my first was a lamdatumey 6 yrs ago .also glad found a recent video such as yours my biggest challage will be sleeping as i sleep on my side keep healing ! thanks agin
Thank you so much , my surgery is May 25 , 2023 , Spinal fusion L3 4 5 , this will help me a lot , but so scared again , thank you again ❤
How are you now Tony?

Hi,
Great video. I had a laminectomy 5 weeks ago. What a recovery. Definitely no joke. I do feel better as the weeks move forward. I did sleep exactly like you said and it worked awesome!
Thanks,
Chris.
Hi I’m going to get a laminectomy soon. Could you please tell me how your recovery process was and how long you were out as in work, school or daily activities ? I know everyone is different I just am curious.
@@corriceflowers1362 how are you doing after your surgery ?
@@sm5405 So sorry to hear this! Praying for you. I hope you come back here and let me know how everything goes.
I will be having surgery hopefully by the end of Feb. Waiting to see the vascular surgeon. I'm researching things that will help me with my recovery. Thank you for this information.

2 issues I has was:
- I have a bad left knee that doesn’t bend so I had to figure a new way to get into bed.

----ask questions
----don't cut things off your ankle with a sharp knife

It’s important to maintain a pretty upright position throughout the recovery process. I recommend squatting or using a reacher tool to get low items or to reach legs/feet/floor. I’m a big fan of extra cushion when seated in a desk chair. A cushion with a sacral/coxyl opening can take some pressure off!

I'm having a lumbar decompression and fusion in two weeks. Do you think a pregnancy pillow is a good option for side sleeping?
Absolutely! They are a great option for many!
I completely agree
To begin you are not laying on a extra firm mattress which is required for that
type of conditions. As we can see your spine is not being aligned at all.
And I know very well based on my own experience how painful is trying to
move from one side to the other when you are on a lumbar crisis (not to mention
when you are on post surgery recovery process)
So you have no idea what lumbar pain neither post surgery is like.
I just had a fusion done and didn’t know I could sleep on my side.
I will be in a turtle brace for 12 weeks.
None of these videos show how to deal with the brace
as a 15 year old with spinal fusion i cry every time i've moved.
You make some good points, but please learn the difference between the verbs “lie” and “lay.” When people are horizontal, they are “lying” down. 😊
My back goes to sleep or numb when on my side. Help please
I just had spinal fusion
After you have had a spinal
procedure and also have an incision in your back, what you can’t know unless you’ve been through it is that very few will have the core strength to perform these activities.
5:31 lifting your hip is ok?
As long as the spinal alignment remains intact, the hip should be able to be lifted straight up and then back down. This movement may not be physically possible depending on the location of the back surgery. It is very person specific, but some small movement at the hip should be safe for most.
@@EquipMeOT got it. Thank you
You shifted your hips after you rolled which is something I can’t currently do.
I have a bad tailbone and use this on all my seating 👇🏻
